Ben Cardin, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, said a vote could happen in the Senate “as early as next week” on a backdoor AUMF being crafted by John McCain’s “Gang of 8.” It would give the President the authorization to take military action if certain conditions are not met. (Don’t sleep yet.) Since members of Congress are still declaring their support/opposition to the use of military force in Congress, we’re going to keep tracking them. We’ll be updating this post with Syria news throughout the day.

Things are looking pretty grim today for the pro-bombing camp in Congress. Firedoglake’s latest whip count indicates that there are 94 firm “nay” votes and 99 “lean nay,” which means the world of potential “nay” votes is approaching the magic 217 votes needed to stop passage.

House leadership tried to create the illusion of “momentum” yesterday with John Boehner and Eric Cantor coming out in favor of authorizing the use of force with Syria, as well as Xavier Becerra and Chris Van Hollen putting aside their concerns about “boots on the ground” and jumping on board.
Nonetheless, the number of representatives coming out in opposition to the vote continue to dramatically outstrip those in favor.
