Information travels too fast these days to maintain that kind of charade when you’re actively working against against your own base. Rahm thought that you could fool all of the people this time, that in the end they could package a “goody bag” and Obama could sell it to his supporters and call it health care reform — even though he had campaigned against the very back room deal making with PhRMA and other stakeholders that formed the underpinnings of the health care bill. When insurance stocks soared, people understood. When the PhRMA deal leaked out, they got it.

The fact that the White House worked hand in hand with the Finance Committee to craft a bill, which doesn’t have a public option? Meaningless. Reports that they would have put a trigger in that bill but didn’t have the votes to get it through? More lies. The complete absence of any reporting saying that Obama has called a single Senator or member of Congress and urge them to vote for a public option? Well, that’s because he’s cleverly waiting until the last minute to fix it in conference.

And go say “hi” to Eve on her POP diary this morning. As I said, we’ll have more later. But this is where this battle has to go in order for it to become a movement that can achieve universal health care, not just a short-term political battle. Her heart, and the heart of those who are willing to get arrested because they believe passionately in social justice for all, is the thing that will carry us to victory in the battle for universal health care.
