It is very impressive that the deficit fear-mongers, led by people like Peter Peterson, David Walker and Alan Simpson, have managed to get all of Washington worked into a self-destructive frenzy over the issue of the federal debt. The debt simply is not the issue regular Americans care about right now. Americans overwhelmingly rank jobs [...]

While the President reiterated that $20 billion isn’t a cap, it’s important to know how much more BP could and should pay. One analyst said it could be as much as $63 billion; I suspect and hope it will be in the hundreds of billions. That’s why it’s important we make clear BP should be responsible for every dime of damage from its disaster. Anything less is a taxpayer funded bailout of BP. Can you add your name and help us reach 50,000 signatures before we deliver our petition to the Senate next week?

Ten days after the BP oil rig collapsed into a flaming ball of oil on April 20, I wrote a post about how most of the environmental groups still had nothing about it on their landing pages. Here was the Sierra Club’s landing page on the morning of April 30: I chalked it up to [...]

FDL produced this video mashup of the two known clips of underwater footage of the remnants of the Deepwater Horizon gushing millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. There is still a third pipe, not shown, leaking oil.

It’s difficult to watch the disaster unfolding, knowing there’s little you can do to stop the inevitable destruction. It’s even more difficult to know that President Obama wants to build even more offshore oil rigs and put more of our oceans at risk.
That’s why Firedoglake is launching a TV ad against expanded offshore drilling, featuring images of the destruction in the Gulf and President Obama’s own voice advocating for more offshore oil drilling, even after the BP disaster.

Hey, Sierra Club: There’s a giant flaming ball of oil being pushed straight for the coasts of Alabama and Mississippi. Might be the worst environmental event in decades. I know it makes the President’s recent decision to allow offshore drilling look. . . well, awkwardly timed, but this is, sort of, you know, your issue, [...]

The Coast Guard is working to try to clean up a roughly 2,100 square-mile oil slick in the gulf of Mexico caused by a deep sea oil drilling operation. That means the oil slick is now covering more surface area than 31 different sovereign nations, and could possibly grow even larger. As we watch a [...]
