83% of 2008 Obama Donors Oppose Tax Cut Extensions
Posted in: Barack Obama
Gregg Sargent got an advance look at a poll commissioned by MoveOn that asked 2008 Obama donors how the felt about extending the Bush tax cuts:
- 83% of 2008 Obama donors are opposed to extending the Bush tax cuts for income over $250,000 a year
- 74% are deeply opposed
- 57% are less likely to support Democrats who support this deal in 2012
- 51% say the deal makes them less likely to contribute to Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012
Low-dollar donors accounted for 25% of Obama’s 2008 war chest. According to the Campaign Finance Institute, he received 80% more money from large donors (cumulative contributions of at least $1,000) than from small donors. So a decrease in small-dollar donations may not matter that much to him.
Obama assumes Democrats will be there for him regardless in 2012, so it’s much more puzzling that he’s pursuing a deal that only 25% of independents support.
