It continues to sound like President Obama is moving towards getting the US directly involved in the war in Syria as he ups his rhetoric around ISIL.
At a press conference in Estonia Obama promise to take the fight to the terrorists after the killing of two journalists saying “whatever these murderers think they’ll achieve by killing innocent Americans like Steven, they have already failed. They have failed because, like people around the world, Americans are repulsed by their barbarism. We will not be intimidated. Their horrific acts only unite us as a country and stiffen our resolve to take the fight against these terrorists. And those who make the mistake of harming Americans will learn that we will not forget, and that our reach is long and that justice will be served.”
More importantly Obama labeled ISIL a threat to the United States and said he would destroy them. The important part is in bold. “So the bottom line is this: Our objective is clear, and that is to degrade and destroy ISIL so that it’s no longer a threat not just to Iraq but also the region and to the United States.”
Obama did slightly walk back the “destory” rhetoric when asked a follow up questions but the framing of ISIL as a threat to the United States that needs to dealt with remains.
At this point it no longer sounds like it is a question of if we will be at war in Syria but only a question of when and how.
If Obama is going involve the country in yet another war he should at least follow the Constitution by getting authorization from Congress first.
