Imprisoned CIA torture whistleblower John Kiriakou is in the midst of serving a 30 month sentence at the Federal Correctional Institute in Loretto, Pennsylvania. On May 1st, he became eligible to be transferred to a halfway house closer to his wife and 5 young children in Arlington, VA.

According to John’s Letters from Loretto published here at Firedoglake, the Bureau of Prisons had promised to move him on May 1st for a total of 9 months in the halfway house if he promised to stop speaking with the press. John complied, but when it came time to review his case, the BOP rescinded their offer. When John resumed writing his letters and speaking to the press, prison officials began a campaign of harassment and intimidation in an effort to silence him.

Firedoglake has closely followed John’s case since his arrest in 2012 and have supported him throughout the government’s vindictive campaign to discredit and destroy him as it has with other whistleblowers like Thomas Drake, Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning. Today, we organized a group of people in Washington, DC to visit the offices of over 25 key members of the House and Senate to ask that they intervene on John’s behalf by contacting Bureau of Prisons Director Charles Samuels and requesting that he move John to a halfway house closer to home immediately. The group is being led by John’s cousin Clifford, who has been taking the group from office to office explaining John’s case today.

Our friends at the Government Accountability Project have joined the group and are tweeting pictures from the office visits, which I’ve shared below. When I spoke with Clifford last, they had finished visiting offices in Russell and Dirksen and were making their way through offices in the Hart building. Clifford manages the @JohnKiriakou twitter account, and will also be tweeting about the day from there.

We also asked activists from across the country to print out our packet and visit their local congressional offices with the same ask. If you participated, please let us know how it went in the comments below.

Update: CODEPINK joins the office visits!
