It is worth remembering that while the media often focus on how the latest story or international incident will affect elections, what regular people care about most has remained unchanged for years. From Gallup:
The number one problem according to Americans is unemployment followed closely by government dysfunction and the poor economy. Issues like immigration or foreign policy barely register. While many factors play into President Obama’s low approval numbers, which are dragging down Democrats’ chances in the midterms, does anyone doubt that if the unemployment was down to 5% Obama wouldn’t be a lot more popular?
It is boring to keep repeating the same story but it is the truth. The Obama team greatly underestimated the downturn and for years mishandled the crisis so his party is politically struggling along with the economy.
Democrats’ real problem with Obamacare isn’t Koch-funded ads. It is that they made big promises about it and it hasn’t actually made an impact on unemployment or on improving the economy. At the same time, the terrible rollout gave the impression Democrats were responsible for much of the government’s dysfunction.
What makes good government is good policy, not trying to win the spin war, getting industry to buy in, or convincing the Washington centrist they’are serious. What people want is tangible positive improvements.
