By the end of February roughly 4.2 million people have selected plans on the new health care exchanges according to the Department of Health and Human Services. That means just under a million new individual selected policies last month, roughly the same number who signed up in January.

During the entire open enrollment period so far 1.6 millionĀ  signed up for coverage on one of the state based exchanges while another 2.6 signed up on one of the federal run exchanges. Only 27 percent of people who selected plans in March are in the important 18-34 age group.

This number represents only people who have chosen a plan on the exchange, but since it does take into account who has actually paid a premium the number who have gotten insurance is going to be smaller than 4.2 million. On the other hand some people have bought new ACA compliment individual coverage direct from insurers and they are not counted in this data.

While most expect a surge of last minute purchases this month when the open enrollment period ends it seems very unlikely the administration will hit its original goal of 7 million. That would require a massive increase.
