John Kiriakou with his wife, Heather

CIA torture whistleblower John Kiriakou resumed speaking with the press and writing his ‘Letters from Loretto’ after the Bureau of Prisons reneged on their deal to give him 9 months in a halfway house. Unfortunately, prison officials have chosen to respond with brute force: conducting surprise searches of his cell, attempting to remove his writing desk and threatening him with ‘diesel therapy.’

As he explains in his latest letter published at Firedoglake, “Diesel therapy is when a prisoner is transferred from one prison to another all across the country via prison van, bus or “conair” plane, never staying in any one prison long enough to receive telephone, email, mailing or visitation privileges.”

“I could move to a different prison every week for the rest of my sentence and still not hit them all. In the meantime, my family and attorneys wouldn’t even know what time zone I was in,” John wrote.

This vindictive behavior is not only wrong, but has been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Please join us in contacting the Bureau of Prisons and demand Director Charles Samuels end the illegal retaliation against John Kiriakou.

Send a message to Bureau of Prisons Director Charles Samuels to stop the illegal retaliation and threats against John Kiriakou.

John has been a model prisoner during the past few months of his incarceration, especially if you consider what it must be like to stay silent as you’re ripped away from your family and imprisoned after exposing the use of illegal torture tactics at the CIA. He even has the support of Virginia Representative Jim Moran, who has written letters to BOP Director Samuels on John’s behalf.

But even though John kept up his end of his deal with the BOP, prison officials gave him only 5 months in a halfway house. When John started speaking out again, his mistreatment worsened: prison officials have even threatened to break John’s desk off the wall of his cell in a desperate-but-futile bid to shut him up.

If we don’t act quickly, the BOP could take the next step force John to spend the rest of his sentence on the move and incommunicado under the farcical justification that it was “related to a ‘bedspace issue or for [his] own safety.”

Join us in demanding Bureau of Prisons Director Charles Samuels end the illegal retaliation and threats against John Kiriakou.

Firedoglake will continue to support John’s decision to exercise his first amendment rights by publishing his ‘Letters from Loretto’ and advocating on his behalf whenever he needs our help. Thank you in advance for your support of this important effort.
