As expected Speaker John Boehner (R) has folded on the debt limit. Despite spending weeks on plans to try to “get something” for their debt limit increase vote House Republicans have finally decided to bring a clean increase to the floor on Tuesday. The bill should pass easily with bipartisan support and this idiotic piece of legal necessity will be doubt with.
Boehner giving in this time finally brings our several year-long saga with debt limit hostage-taking to an end. After being forced to now repeatedly fold it should be clear to most Congressional Republicans that trying to take the debt limit hostage doesn’t provide leverage or get you anything. Hopefully, Republicans have achieved acceptance and next time we won’t even need to go through this song and dance.
This whole problem really started because President Obama thought saying he was open to negotiating over the debt limit would be a clever way to force everyone to agree to his grand bargain. To his credit, after that failed Obama realized what a disastrous precedent he created and it has taken a good chunk of his presidency to finally fix it.
If our government was run by sane people we would just eliminate the debt limit altogether since it serves no positive function.
