Spending this weekend with my family I’ve realized the timing of Thanksgiving is very awkward. As a country we have basically two big family holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and they are only a month apart.
If they were slightly closer together, like only ten days apart, they would probably be merged into one very long vacation for many people. Instead, they are just far enough apart they need to be treated separately while also being very close together.
That is a lot of traveling in roughly a month. Two big trips so close together can be costly. It also means not enough happens between the two holidays to have a lot of new developments to share on Christmas with your family. Thanksgiving sucks up all the good conversation leaving almost nothing for December.
I think it would be nice if Thanksgiving were moved back a few weeks to early November. That way it would still maintain its feel as a harvest celebration but give a bit larger separation between the two big family holidays. It is not like Thanksgiving needs to be the last Thursday of the month.
