Nothing better shows how badly this government shutdown is going for Republicans than President Obama’s press conference today, which lasted more than an hour. Despite a terribly managed roll out of his signature health care law, Obama did not get a single question about health care.
Instead the questions all focused on the far more important and immediate issues of the government shutdown and debt ceiling. During a week that should be a serious embarrassment for the administration, Obama got to spend over an hour hammering Republicans for being irresponsible. He was able to look thoughtful and in control while the Republican party is fighting with itself trying to even figure out what their latest demand is.
Republicans are not only doing serious political damage to themselves with the shutdown, but they’ve also managed to save Obama from what should have been one of his worst news weeks ever. At a time when the Obama administration should be facing serious criticism for the unbelievable incompetence of the health care launch, congressional Republicans have completely stolen the spotlight. The failure with Healthcare.gov is merely a candle next to the hot burning sun of House Republican stupidity.
Of course Republicans are still convinced this whole fiasco them gives them “leverage.” Apparently Obama is going to make huge concessions because he is so desperate to stop the erosion of Republican poll numbers, keep Democrats from effectively being handed the governorship in Virginia, and get the media again focused on the otherwise incredibly embarrassing failures of his eponymous health care law.
