Many Congressional Republicans are now deeply angry with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for pushing to tie the funding the government to defunding Obamacare. They believe he is why their party now needs to waste a week passing a doomed continuing resolution just to prove the idea is unworkable to members and their base.
While Cruz is at fault for championing an idiotic idea, it would never have become a problem if the rest of the party hadn’t acted like a bunch of cowards. If as soon as the idea was first floated the top Congressional Republicans had actively pointed out that the idea was stupid, unworkable, and likely to damage the party, they could have quickly put a stop to it.
It would just have been one stupid idea from a few senators with zero support. They media would have quickly stopped talking about it
Instead, Republicans leaders like Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tried to play it safe by staying silent. Boehner was too scared of losing his speakership to say anything and McConnell is too worried about his primary challenger. Other prominent Republicans like Rep. Paul Ryan, Rep. Eric Cantor, and Sen. Macro Rubio either avoided the issue or endorsed it because they didn’t want to damage their political future.
Leadership ignored their responsibility to look after the needs of the party and let this idiotic idea grow and fester for weeks.
This was Cruz’s campaign but it only became this mess because the Republican leadership has become cowardly enablers.
