What the military has done in Egypt is the textbook definition of a coup. Under federal law Obama should have cut off aid as soon the military took over, but the administration has engaged in some impressive linguistic gymnastics to avoid using that word. Even as the military arrested political opponents and began violent crackdowns, the administration still didn’t call it a coup. At any moment, though, Obama could call a spade a spade -or in this case, a coup a coup- and end our military aid to the country.
Obama is both reluctant to actually do that but is hoping if he keeps threatening to, he can get some positive change. Obama sounds like a parent who threatens to turn the car around if nothing changes by the count of three, but to save face he is now at two and a half and about to say two and three quarters.
