After Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) said he would join a filibuster against proposed gun control legislation, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) blasted Republicans for their obstructionism. Reid called it unconscionable not to allow a vote on the issue. From ABC:
“Senate Republicans seem afraid to even engage in this debate,” Reid said on the Senate floor of the Republicans threatening to filibuster the gun control legislation.
“The least Republicans owe the parents of these 20 little babies who are murdered at Sandy Hook is a thoughtful debate about who whether stronger laws could have saved their little girls and boys,” Reid said. “The least Republicans owe them is a vote.”
The problem is that Republicans can’t stop a vote on gun control legislation unless the Democrats allow them. As Reid himself pointed out just a few days ago, at anytime a simple majority in the Senate could change the rules to eliminate filibusters all together.
If Reid truly feels the victims of Sandy Hook deserve a debate followed by a vote then Senate Democrats can just force one. If it is immoral for Republicans to filibuster the proposed legislation than it is equally immoral for Democrats to allow them to filibuster it. Democrats are just as much denying the victims a vote as Republicans are. Responsibility ultimate rests with the people who actually have the power.
