For the first time ever a Secretary of Defense nominee will be filibustered. Some Senate Republicans are forcing Democrats to go through with the lengthy process of cloture to get a vote on Chuck Hagel. This has apparently given Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) a sad. From NPR:
For President Obama’s choice to become defense secretary, first came the flaying, then the filibustering.
It wasn’t that much of a surprise that Senate Republicans on Wednesday refused to end debate on Chuck Hagel’s nomination, forcing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to try to find 60 votes to move the nomination forward to a final vote. [...]
“This is the first time in the history of our country that a presidential nominee for secretary of defense has been filibustered,” Reid said Wednesday on the Senate floor. “What a shame. But that’s the way it is.”
If only there was a way Reid could have prevented this…oh wait…
Democrats had a chance to eliminate or restrict the use of the filibuster last month. Instead, Reid chose to cut a “deal” that gave the Republican minority an effective veto over everything in the chamber. It’s not surprising that after Democrats handed Republicans this incredible power the GOP is choosing to exercise it.
At some point you need to stop blaming the Republicans for their filibusters. If someone decide to give a known arsonist matches and gasoline, they now bear most of the responsibility when he burns their house down.

Well, there is always the hope that the filibustering shows teh stoopit in all its glory to prove the case that obstruction is the be all and end all of the Rs in the Senate.
Yeah, hope. So 2008.
For sure THIS TIME the Washington Post will notice that the Democrats are the Grownups and stop playing everything 50-50.
ROFLMAO!
NERO (nasty evil republican oligarchs) fiddles while Rome burns. Of course they kept the filibuster; it is part of the kabuki show to give material to Comedy Central (Owned by Viacom who donate to both parties and all the major shareholders have giant accounts at Goldman Sachs.)
Senate Democrats. The most timorous species in the animal kingdom.
“No one could have predicted…..”
AIPAC gets its dog and pony show. McCain will win best in breed.
I’m sorry to be offtopic, but Kevin has a very good pipeline protest diary and the site is not letting me go to it. All it goes to is his personal page.
I can get on it but have had similar problems off and on in the past few months. Maybe the FBI is clogging up the system; they need to know what is going on too!
This is the fault of Harry Reid and he should pay for it by losing the next election.

Reid is the symptom of a larger problem. If his Democratic lodge brothers were upset with his “leadership,” they would have replaced him. Evidently they’re fine with being bullied by their distinguished colleagues across the aisle.
Heard a clip of Reid on NPR this morning:
Oops. Jon quoted in the post the very piece from Reid that I heard this morning. Obviously, I was paraphrasing from memory…
The filibuster is working just the way hairy reid planned it in conjunction with tptb. If the vote were along majority lines, the dims would have no place to hide when the vote would come to something that would help the 99% instead of another brick in the wall around the 1%. I don’t get upset at this anymore. What strikes me as silly is commenters that actually feel that o and the dims would do good things if the mean old repugs would play fair. We are getting exactly the govt that o and the corrupt dims want. The dims have the numbers, but they want the repugs to run the govt.
There’s any number of ways this could have been prevented – simply by not putting Hagel up for a vote [yet] for one. Reid voluntarilly opted for this as opposed to Susan Rice who was never put up for a vote, hence asn’t filibustered. What the Republicans have been asking for has been known for a long time, but despite the WH not turning over the docs Reid put Hagel up for a vote this week – this wasn’t a long pre-planned pre-scheduled vote on Hagel, but something Reid just did this week.
Try clearing your cache. If your browser is IE use Tools – Internet Options – Delete – Temporary Internet Files. If you don’t know what the function is on other browsers, maybe you Google “clear cache” and the browser name.
P.S. Hagel is a sucky nominee anyway. Filibuster everything and things may improve for the majority
Harry Reid is one of the main reasons I no longer care about politics. I don’t waste my time watching the Democratic echo chamber that is MSNBC and I never watched FOX.
Thank god sports coverage is expanding.
I’m too lazy to look up the last Democrat who was SecDef. This crap is all diversion while the “two” “opposing” parties strip our country of its remaining rights and assets.
But at least we will feel safe and secure from __________(fill in fear of the moment) as we starve to death in the streets.
When the last Dem held the position it was still called the War Dept. I think.
1. give in and Rethugs keep filibustering everything.
2. why are Rethugs pissing in the face of all enlisted men?
William Perry, who served from 1994 to 1997, after a ten-year NFL career with the Bears and Eagles.
Watching TV is a waste of your time, period.
This is not really about Hagel. It’s about the ability of the minority to block anything they don’t like. So Reid should just keep punching himself in the face for allowing this to happen.
This allows Lindsey the Tough, Hero John, Randian Paul and thier ilk to decide who will be Sec of Defense, Director of the CIA and Sec of Treasury. They have veto power. What a way to run the government.
Well, maybe continuing to fight the good fight, and savoring the bad folks’ obstruction to whine about . . . are worth constipating progress after all.
Was letting filibuster survive thoroughly thought through?
Very different discussion at burnt orange. They are toadies to the kabuki show.
Thanks. I remember that guy: the one Walter Payton said looked “like a great big water bed” on the field; also big on R&D.
Did you know that is not true???
The fiddle was not invented until 300 years AFTER Nero died. Apparently, unconfirmed reports are the Nero was “fiddling” (as we use the term today) with something else.
I think this whole mess is due to just the two high ranking rethugs, McCain and Graham.
I’d rather be locked in a room with a chimp on crack holding a loaded gun than trust the GOP.
Regarding the filibuster as well as other issues, I think that point was reached by many at least three years ago.
“Democrats had a chance to eliminate or restrict the use of the filibuster last month.”
Think maybe they didn’t because they wanted to keep it for the day when it’s their turn in the minority?
Hey, I’m just askin’…..
