We’ve received an emergency request from Occupy Sandy for 400 Tyvek suits to protect those who are cleaning up mold damage in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.
Click here to help send 400 Tyvek suits to Occupy Sandy cleanup teams.
As Marybeth Onyeukwu and RF Shunt both reported, mold damage continues to be one of the most serious problems facing residents attempting to reoccupy their homes. But exposure to mold presents serious health consequences for the people cleaning it up.
We worked with #OccupySandy to research and source the equipment they need for mold cleanup. They informed us today they desperately need 400 Tyvek suits to be dispersed in both New York and New Jersey to protect volunteers who are currently being exposed to mold as they attempt help residents cleanup in the storm’s aftermath.
If you’d like to buy Tyvek suits to equip Superstorm Sandy cleanup crews, you can find them at the Occupy Sandy wish list registry in the Firedoglake online store. The registry allows groups to create a list of their specific supply needs so people can purchase them on their behalf. The registry then marks each gift as purchased and keeps a running total of how many are still needed. Items will be shipped to cleanup crews free of charge the same day they are ordered.
Ironically, the request for Tyvek suits comes the same day it was announced that the Red Cross is sitting on $78 million they raised for Sandy relief efforts.
Here’s a photo that Gothamist published last week of a trash bag full of hamburgers that the Red Cross delivered to Sandy victims:
It’s not hard to figure out what Sandy cleanup crews need, you just have to ask them. And right now, our member liaison Steve C — who helped bring $20,000 worth of blankets and other supplies donated by FDL readers to Sandy victims — tells us their most pressing need is protection from mold exposure.
Please help us reach the goal of sending 400 Tyvek suits to Occupy Sandy cleanup teams. You can protect them from suffering toxic mold exposure while they help Sandy victims get their lives back.

About FDL Action
I just bought ten, (first buyer so FITZ!!!)
I can’t figure out how to actually pay for it though, there’s no “pay now” link
Hey Perris, Fitz indeed! Thanks so much.
miss you girl, hope everything’s ok
since I brought up fitz, am wondering how red is doing
if you need help email me at brian@firedoglake.com but basically just follow the “Buy it now” / “Purchase” prompts. It will ask you to enter a quantity and then will ask you to click through to our online store where you enter your payment details and finish check out. It’s a little wonky I’ll admit, but it’s the best there is for this kind of thing. Happy to help you or any others who might be confused by the process.
Has the Red Cross become just a money-making machine? Why aren’t they using that money and the bag of “hamburgers” is disgusting. Looks like something to feed the dogs.
“After speaking with our volunteers, it seems that they were coming towards the end of their day, they had extra food, they happened to be feeling nice like our volunteers often do and dropped them off.” Kille says that while the workers “usually should use a cambro,” the bag holding the broken hamburgers was a “food-grade bag made to withstand heat, and the food was perfectly safe.”

so basically: hey they were just trying to do something NICE! and maybe they should have used containers instead of bags, but it’s still technically edible.
I just sent you an email, do not know shipping address
Thanks FDL I’ll be back to do later today and I’m happy to report I’ve never given the red cross a dime.
Don’t worry about the shipping address- we’re fulfilling the orders ourselves and know they are donated and where to send them. Just choose shipping method “Donate items to Occupy Sandy.” We won’t send them to you.
Thanks Jo!!
Will you’ll take care of choosing the size too, whatever we check off on the order?
Shall I just put in a random size and assume you will adjust to what’s called for on your end?
I can only go for 5 I’m afraid – work’s been a little slow for me.
And let me pipe up and say to everyone that this stuff is really needed and important – especially as time moves on and the black mold gets worse. It keeps the volunteers safe and able to continue.
The purchase site is telling me it “can’t load libraries . . .” and just hangs. It’s always been so easy to donate here. I guess I’ll have to go to a ‘puter running windows and see if that makes a difference. I’ve tried 3 times, purchase won’t go through :-(
when I tried to purchase seven, it seemed it wanted to ship them to me, so I stopped.
I will try again…. sure hope I am not ordering twice though. Sure hope they are not mailed to me, either…..
second try: fail
They want a street address, which is unknown to me.
oh well……
It took a little doing, but I got my purchase to go through.
Here’s what I did.
Step 1 – click on Orange button on this page that says “Buy Now”
Step 2 – When the donation page loads, click on the green button that says “Buy it from shop.firedoglake.com”
Step 3 – An overlay window will load up. Enter Name, Email Address and Quantity in the 3 text boxes, then click the gray “Purchase” button.
Step 4 – The overlay window will change – click on “Buy It” Button.
Step 5 – You’ll be taken to the Tyvek suit page. Select a size – I just picked one at random.
Step 6 – Click the red “Add to Cart” button.
Step 7 – You’ll be taken to a shopping cart page. I clicked the “Proceed to Checkout” red button – the one on the right towards the bottom of the page. (I had originally tried the login & checkout button, but it didn’t like my FDL password)
Step 8 – You’ll be taken to the checkout page. Fill in the info. Once you’ve put in your information (and only then) under “Shipping Information” you can click a button the says something like “Show me Shipping Options”, when you do you’ll get a drop down menu and you can pick “Donate this items to Occupy Sandy volunteers, these items won’t be sent to you”
Step 9 – Once your information is complete, you can click the red “Place your Order” button at the bottom of the page (you may need to scroll down)
Brian or Jane – if I got any of this wrong, please correct me.
I sent 5, it was confusing but I think I did it. Next time I won’t try to do it from a phone :)
RF’s got it right. Size doesn’t matter – we’re going to make sure they get the size distribution they need, we just need everyones help in making the order. We will handle sizes and destination so don’t worry about shipping or sizes.
Please email me at brian@firedoglake.com if you have questions and I’m happy to help you out — thank you so much for your supporT!!!!
