A record 60% of Americans want to remove troops from Afghanistan as soon as possible, while just 32% of the country think we should keep troops there until the situation has stabilized, according to a new Pew Research poll. This is a massive drop since last May when the poll found 48% wanted to remove troops and 47% thought we should keep them there. From Pew:
Support for keeping U.S. forces in Afghanistan has declined over the past year among Republicans, Democrats and independents. For the first time in a Pew Research Center survey, as many Republicans (48%) favor removing U.S. forces from Afghanistan as soon as possible as support keeping the troops there until the situation is stabilized (45%).
As recently as a month ago, a majority of Republicans (53%) said they favored staying in Afghanistan until the situation stabilized, while 41% favored a troop withdrawal.
Currently, 66% of Democrats and 62% of independents say the U.S. should remove troops as soon as possible, while about three-in-ten (29%) in each group favors keeping forces in Afghanistan.
There is simply no reason to continue our absurdly expensive decade-long war in Afghanistan. Whether we stay an extra 6 months, 16 months, or 16 years the situation will not be stabilized. Our efforts are wasted trying to prop up a deeply corrupt central government that lacks popular respect. After a decade it is too late to think we can win hearts and minds with this occupation.
It appears the American people have finally come around to this conclusion, and it is time for our political leaders to follow suit. It is time to end the war now.

About FDL Action
The pols will rush right out to pay attention to this poll just like they’ve responded appropriately to every other poll wherein the voters want them to do something they have no intention of doing.
Is it JUST me or do MOST of these graphs start to look alike after a while with the two lines crossing and moving in opposite directions with equal directionality????
“Our efforts are wasted trying to prop up a deeply corrupt central government that lacks popular respect.” – Sounds familiar.
So, what does it mean when the wishes of the majority of the population in a democracy are simply ignored…time, and time, and time again?
Geeze, whats that word..it starts with a letter..but I can’t remember which one it is. Must be the fluoride. Silly me.
I wasn’t alive during Vietnam but the two (Vietnam & Afg.) appear to be quite similar on the surface (drug running, strategic positioning, MIC, etc…)
I don’t see the
crusadewar ending anytime soon. I’m not even sure a new Daniel Ellsberg could help end it, though I guess Assange is a fair parallel. IMHO the Wikileaks documents alone warrant a far greater upheaval than just exiting Afghanistan.Wait, where did I put my car keys? Well, shucks.
A damn expensive and immoral way to teach the American public geography.
Yes, it’s time to leave. Even Hamid Karzai wants us to go.
Meh, Obama’s a colonialist in the US; he’s gonna be super-colonialist overseas.
Besides, his whole schtick is to out-conservative the conservatives.
Got an emailing from some Dem group, using an Obama quote as one of it’s points, to wit (close paraphrase): “We cannot afford to keep our troops in Afghanistan for a long time”
Well, duh, I said to myself. But, quickly thereupon, I also said to myself, well WTF. Isn’t this the guy who doubled down in AfPak as his signature war?
So no big surprise, but Mr. “Let’s get it on” is now prepping us for his behind-the-curve withdrawal from Afghanistan because — again no surprise — the polls and the politics say to move in that direction quicker rather than slower (but we all know that it just means the MIC slush funds go to some other MIC enterprise).
So O’s 11 dimensional mind tells him it’s politically smart to try to box in the rethugs with their fight everywhere, kill everyone mantra. My gut tells me O is trying to play both sides.
Who knows.
Fucking pols.
Actually, I think O is trying to play both sides because, well for one, we know how fucking decisive he is and, two, we know how he loves to dazzle us with paradoxes and fancy dilemmas that he can then cut through like a hot knife through butter.
I’m not sure I believe anything he says; or, I’m sure I don’t.
Hey Alyosh, ya shoulda been around. Great time. Great music. Everybody happy. Na, I’m lying. Much of it wasn’t so great.
But, your surmise about comparing Vietnam — and the lessons not learned — is quite accurate. Only the current pols and warmongers like to discount that because, well, they always need to differentiate the last debacle from the current debacle to keep the MIC dollars flowing.
Oh, and also, they’d have to take responsibility for being either slow learners, corrupt, liars, or all these. Except O of course, because, like you, he was too young. And, besides he doesn’t know how to read and doesn’t have access to a wide range of advisers and opinion. Oh, wait.
But as any Democrat can tell you, Iraq was a dumb war. Afghanistan was a smart war. Because … uh … they hate us for our freedom! Not because of our drones and our pissing on their dead and all those massacres! Duh!
But wait, there’s more! Here comes war with Syria. And then Iran. All before November. But you’d better vote Democratic, or Romney will take us to war in Syria and Iran!
Vote Green or Socialist or anything but one of the two corporate war parties.

Afghanistan is FUBAR! And our war/occupation there has turned into a giant clusterfuck. We never should have invaded that country and certainly never should have seriously considered establishing a permanent military presence there. But career-crazed generals, war profiteers, and the MIC’s civilian overlords saw opportunity where none existed. Today Afghanistan no longer exists as a nation-state – the only reason we refer to it as “Afghanistan” is for geographic ease of location. To remain there is sheer folly. Out of Afghanistan now!
Mem Day march!
i want one–a march on washington to end the war.
it would be sooooo awesome.
pls organize it for me.
thnks, ma

There is only one lesson ‘the people’ need to learn to take back control of their lives and their government:

That puts things in perspective nicely…thanks!
