Even though there was a lot of hyperventilating about how the original rule requiring employers to provide insurance coverage for contraceptives as part of free preventive care might hurt President Obama politically, the reality is the vast majority of the country supports the idea. From CBS News polling:
According to a survey, conducted between Feb. 8-13, 61 percent of Americans support federally-mandated contraception coverage for religiously-affiliated employers; 31 percent oppose such coverage.
The number is similar among self-professed Catholics surveyed: 61 percent said they support the Obama administration’s rule, while 32 percent oppose it.
Majorities of both men and women said they are in favor of the rule, though support among women is especially pronounced, with 66 percent supporting and 26 percent opposing it. Among men, 55 percent of men are in favor; 38 percent object.
It is important to note that this poll was asking about the original rule, which was clearly popular enough that no “compromise” should have been needed. Now that Obama has announced his compromise, and it has managed to satisfy at least some Catholic institutions, I imagine support for the new policy is marginally higher.
This birth control issue was never a political trap or massive misstep by the Administration, as some like Peggy Noonan and others claimed. The rule did not hurt Obama’s standing with Catholic voters. The concept was always broadly popular with the American people.
Finally, the poll shows roughly one third of the people questioned opposed the rule, but they likely consist of individuals who would never even consider voting for Obama anyway.

Pedophile-pandering Catholics, get the f$@k out of other people’s business!
Obama has got to the point where even if he can easily win the fight, he capitulates.
Boxturtle (Would the man recognize a royal flush if he was dealt one?)
i encourage the goopers to push this and the end of medicare.
the contraceptive thing is very toxic for them. women vote at a higher rate than men do, too.
can anyone in the gooper party say terry schiavo?
that was a smaller mistake than this “issue.”
watching the overheated and skewed rhetoric on this out of the foxheads makes me wonder at whether they are running for office or think they rule by divine right.
tone deaf and policy blind, also unconstitutional unless their gang of five rewrites settled law, again.

Indeed, his “white flag” is perpetually raised.
Even with all the FetusHeads,Fox Stools, and Bishops of Pedophilia chiming in, I predicted this would be over by Friday. These “outrages” seem to follow a predictable course these days.
I wish the news and Internet media would stop calling the “PILL” contraception ONLY!
The “PILL” is used as much for women who have difficulty with craps, bleeding, cycle regulation, etc. My 25 year old daughter, a graduate student in sports “medicine” was prescribed the “PILL” not because of her sexual exploits (which is her choice), but because of the three items noted. She has difficult craps, sometimes severe bleeding, and cycle problems. These are all hormonal issues that are cyclical menstral issues that us men have no knowledge about on a monthly basis.
So PLEASE stop referring to the “PILL” as only contraceptives, as if the “PILL” is only used to make sure that sexual activity is the only use of the medicine.
And as for the “MORNING AFTER PILL”, if I was raped, brutally or not, I can’t imagine a government stating/violating my Constitutional rights regarding my personal wishes to “POTENTIALLY” caring a zygote to term.
I did not know that. Filed for future reference. Many Thanks!
Boxturtle (I have now learned something new today, I can go home and have a beer!)
I dont; tknow about that. SOOO many people seem to feel it is THEIR duty to tell the rest of us what to do with our ovum and sperm. Personally, I am touched by their concern. But I am dogged by my baser instincts to tell them to STFU and get their friggin nose out of MY bidness.
And, let us not forget the powerful effect condoms have on reducing STD’s not to mention what great weater balloons they make and popular party favors as well.
The irony here is that providing free contraception is just good business practice for the insurance folks. It’s far cheaper than paying extra claims for prenatal and maternity care.
There you go again trying to throw “logic” into an American politicial and social debate. We got no place for that around here. /s
I don’t believe the original plan called for “free” contracepton. That’s why the poll is meaningless. Everyone polled thinks the fight is about getting something for free.
Covering birth control without co-pays is not the same as getting it for free.
Maybe anytime you get coverage from an insurance company and there is no copay it feels free. We are so used to being screwed over, we don’t know when we are and aren’t.
I have moral objections to the use of contraceptives because I like abortions, poverty, street gangs and all the effects of over-population: pollution, mass starvation and social unrest. Quit persecuting me, you amoral heathens!
I would have thought the GOP and the Catholics would have done some polling on the issue before they got the media involved.
The Catholic Church was involved with the immigration rights protests that issue was popular we had more people marching in more cities than the Tea Baggers ever got imagine the crowds we could have gotten if Peggy Noonan, George Will, Rich Lowery, and Pat Buchanan all of whom defended the church against the evil of birth control had actually talked on tv in support of people’s rights who had already been born…on the wrong side of the border.
The Catholic Church obviously called in some markers and got all the talking heads lined up for the issue.
Why didn’t the church get them lined up to support immigrant rights an issue they had much more support on than birth control or tea bagging?
Most Catholics support mandatory birth control coverage. It’s the Evangelicals who are most opposed.
Covering birth control without co-pays is not the same as getting it for free.
Birth control is cheaper than getting pregnant the TV talking heads scream about the cost of providing birth control but never mention the cost of pregnancy.
This dispute is very funny nobody not even the church discusses the morality of birth control they mention cost first then they claim their rights are being trampled.
Their right to be stupid 98% of Catholics are using birth control I suspect even virgins like Peggy Noonan George Will and Pat Buchanan use it.
I think we can judge just how popular an issue is by how quick Obama compromises on it. If Obama won’t compromise then the issue is unpopular. If the media praises Obama for taking a stand then the issue is very unpopular. If the GOP supports Obama on an issue and or does not criticize him then the issue must be both unpopular and something the 1% really want,
It should be considered great all around. Unplanned pregnancy creates a government burden because when parent/parents are unprepared for the physical emotional or financial responsibility of a child the government has to step in to help provide for it. Federal funding to provide schooling, housing, food requirements and health needs are just a few of the programs taxpayers support when parents are not prepared for the the financial costs. Foster care and programs for at risk youths are just some of the programs paid for when parents are unready to deal with the emotional needs of children. If you decrease the likelihood of unplanned children then you decrease the needs for these kinds of programs. As long as we are compelled to bring kids into this world we have a moral obligation to give them as close to a healthy and stable environment as we can so that they can grow up to be productive members of society.
You’d figure conservatives would be all over diminishing the need for the social programs they are always whining about.
Fine, whatever.
The insurance compancies will say we need to add x-million people who need the x-new service. That’s $499 per year per person.
Then everyone gets “free” birth control.
Enjoy it, you paid for it.
