Yesterday we published a list of 61 active occupation encampments across the country that are planning to be there through the winter. People were helpful in the comments in identifying and documenting 5 more:
- Occupy Everett WA
- Occupy Kansas City MO
- Occupy Northampton MA
- Occupy Las Cruces NM
- Occupy Salt Lake City UT
We need a photo or video taken within the last week of an occupation showing the tents, or a link to a recent media report on the tent encampment in order to include them on the list.
On that list we did not include encampments with their status in flux, that are currently fighting the city’s attempt to evict them:
- Albany, NY
- Ashville, NC
- Eugene, OR
- Louisville, KY
- Portland ME
- San Antonio TX
- Santa Fe NM
- Tulsa OK
- Missoula MT
Eugene just got their eviction notice, so they move from yesterday’s list to this list. That brings the total number of encampments we’ve been able to document in the past week that are planning to be there through the winter to 65.
We hope that people in the communities where the occupations are threatened with eviction will make an extra effort to be supportive. A few people can make a difference if they’re willing to make their voices heard, and many have stepped in and been helpful in finding the occupiers other places to encamp. These encampments are doing some really great work (see Occupy Albany video above).
We keep this list up to date by staying in regular contact with FDL members who act as liaisons to over 70 occupations across the country, bringing them food and cold weather supplies. What we find is that many occupations decide to break up in the face of a city crackdown, and make the calculation that it will give them more time to engage in activism if they don’t have an encampment. This almost never happens.
As RF Shunt noted in his perceptive diary, the encampments serve as giant billboards and inspire everyone. They move local progressive groups to action and galvanize a community’s spirit, making them believe that change is possible. When the tent cities go away, many occupy groups still engage in really valuable and smart activism. But over time it’s a lot harder to keep people engaged, and as general assemblies move from location to location, many people drift away because they just don’t know where to go any more.
If you’ve got a local occupation with an encampment, please consider stopping by and lending your support. What the campers are doing out there gives hope to everyone. Often times I don’t think people realize how hard it is for them to do what they’re doing, or how important it is for all of us that they stay there. Which is why so much money is being spent to crush them.
Here’s one of my favorite videos from Occupy Trenton NJ:
Something as small as a guy driving by and handing the campers a McDonald’s bag made everyone really happy.
Donate $10 or more to the Occupy Supply fund and help us continue to support over 70 occupations across the country with cold weather gear, meals, shelter and more. 100% of which will be used to purchase and distribute union and American-made goods to the growing number of occupations we serve.

About FDL Action
If you have an occupation that you want to be included, please provide a link to a photo, video or news report of tents at the encampment from the past week.
We won’t follow up if someone just says “Occupy Oakland” or “Occupy San Francisco,” because what inevitably happens is that we start searching, and someone didn’t read the post and thinks this is just a list of occupations. Many occupations are doing fine work but do not have encampments. This is not that list. This is a list of encampments only, and they must have documentation.
If you want an occupation to be listed, please provide a link of recent photo documentation. A facebook page or group website is not enough.
Has anyone found out just where all these local governments are getting the funds to pay for police overtime?
Gov Walker in Wisconsin is trying to charge protesters for extra police presence and clean up. I was under the impression that our protests are peaceful until the police try and move them and that OWS does a pretty good job of cleaning up after themselves.
So if Walker wanted to save money he should just leave them alone. But if Walker is getting money from the Feds then he has no reason to charge the protester’s money.
I wonder if he is only charging OWS? Tea baggers bring guns to healthcare meetings and don’t get charged money despite an obvious need for police presence we should sue over the double standard.
Just to note something which surely will not get reported, in the suit filed on behalf of Occupy Portland, Me., an allegation in the suit (supported by affidavit) is that the police have been funnelling homeless people to the site, telling them to camp there. Especially homeless who have behavior problems. Then they turn around and predicate closing down Occupy on the basis of allegations of violence in the camp.

First time I’ve heard of that gambit, though it is wholly unsurprising some police force would try it.
Jane, there was a diary yesterday from Occupy Lompoc, Ca. Mentioned being out in the wilderness. Haven’t seen that one mentioned any where.
From the heart of Pennsylvania’s Amish country
Is the WH coordinating all these evictions it seems curious all these towns would try and evict protesters over the holidays. Maybe the WH wants them gone when people are not paying as much attention to the news because of the holidays. Or maybe the WH is worried college kids home from the holidays will join in get more radical and not see Obama as the only alternative anymore as the college kids get educated on OWS issues and learn Obama’s hand in the bank bailout?
Very good point and I doubt the local police came up with that idea themselves this argues that the anti OWS response is coordinated FBI and Homeland Security are the most likely people doing the coordinating.
Occupy Berkeley is also under threat of eviction tonight (for more info, please see the diary I posted this morning.) The eviction notice is now posted on their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/occupyberkeley
Just a little note about math:
Eugene, Oregon is listed twice, so either there are two sites in Eugene or the accurate number of threatened encampments is 9, not the 10 on the list nor the 11 in the headline.
Occupy Philly had a rather large representation of that demographic when they were encamped at Dilworth Plaza. That may not have developed by accident, although its hard to say because the Occupiers made sure that everyone received wholesome meals daily from their kitchen.
Evicting Occupy Eugene is an insult to the memory of Steve Prefontaine, the icon of that region.
One week before Thanksgiving, I was in Northampton, MA and took a picture of six people with signs standing outside of the Bank of America branch. It gave me encouragement to go to NYC and visit OWS the next day.
We have ten years of war.
The Bank Bailout was a success!
Ok we don’t have a natural Disaster yet but food banks around the country are desperate short.
My bold substitute Noble’s for the 1% and we are now at where we are today where SS and Medicare get cut but the Rich want their tax breaks and no reform for Banks.
May 8: Judicial reforms partly abolishing the power of parlements to review legislation are forced through the parlements by Lamoignon in a lit de justice timed to coincide with military sessions
Budget bills can only voted up or down seems a good Parallel.
Only a matter of time if we keep fighting wars and bailing out banks.

We already know how this plays out and in the internet age we know things happen faster. OWS can easily turn into a revolution. We can stop a revolution if we can change our current government policies toward helping people instead of banks if we spend on creating jobs instead of wars.
Seems the powers that be sound like slave owners… “It cost to much?” So how much does it cost to shut up Americans? So Americans pay to shut up Americans expressing their contempt and disgust for a bought system? Spineless cowards hiding behind law to usurp rights, because it cost to much?????????????????
Here in San Diego we cannot have tents due to city ordinances but our occupiers retook the square on Dec. 17th thanks to a city ordinance that requires the city to allow sleeping on public property when all the homeless shelters are full. San Diego never has enough beds in the winter for our huge homeless population so the occupiers should be allowed to sleep on public property at least until the weather warms in the spring–unless the police decide to ignore the law which would not be surprising considering their past actions here.
Twenty-two brave people slept in San Diego’s Freedom Square on the 17th and the 50 or so regular occupiers have vowed to fight on despite the police brutality and abandonment by our political allies. We are occupying the best we can without any shelter. Whether that allows us to be classified as an occupation should not be dependent on whether or not we have tents. There is no talk in San Diego about giving up the occupation. But I understand the need to draw a line somewhere.
I would like to take this opportunity to ask for help from the FDL community. I am the only person to participate as liaison for San Diego and I’m doing a terrible job. I live 30 miles from the occupation and don’t get down there nearly often enough because of health disability, poverty, and major depression. Our occupation needs help. Anyone in the San Diego area who can devote some time and effort to nurturing our occupation please contact me. I could use some help documenting the occupation and providing blog post updates to FDL. I could also use a good FDL friend or two right now to keep me motivated. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me.
Thank you Jane for giving me this opportunity to contribute. You have kept me sane (or close enough) for almost 7 years now and I am honored to serve alongside the FDL community in this great cause. I know you get a lot of backslaps from fans but you should know that you have literally saved lives with the psychological benefit you have provided through this blog–and of course the commenters help tremendously as well. I am proud to say that I am one of those FDL “survivors.” Thanks for stepping up.
I forgot to include a link to the Dec. 17th reoccupation movie titled “OCCUPY SAN DIEGO STRIKES BACK – THE OCCUMENTARY. “
OWS can easily turn into a revolution…
One of the main tenets of most Occupies is that we’re a non-violent movement, TCU..! We don’t advocate a Storming of the Bastille, nor ’68′s Hoboken, Watts, Detroit, etc…! 8-(
in NZ, occupy Aotea Square,Auckland, got an eviction ruling from court today.
Coincidence?
I’m not surprised but I expect that won’t slow you down. :-)

“Press Release from the General Assembly of Occupy Auckland Wednesday 21st December, 2011” | by Occupy Auckland on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 4:08am
I was just telling a friend that the reason cities are chasing-off the people who are actually utilizing freedom of assembly is because the Wall Street $4-billion-a-year hedge fund managers actually visualized a protest more along the lines of that sappy financial company commercial where all the peons are singing opera on the bus.
I’m so sad they’re so disappointed.
Occupy Reno has an occupation that is doing well! We have a 90-day permit that expires in late January, but we’re planning to renew it and stay through the winter. I didn’t see us on your active list.

Austin, too. There is no longer any tolerance for any display 1st amendment rights. Fuck us all…
Thanks scribe, heard the same thing about Occupy Honolulu last night. Nice Homeland Security tactic no doubt.
Adding Reno to the list today. We got a great report on their encampment from our liaisons last night.
