The American people prefer a bigger government that provides more health care services according to a new poll by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Only 37 percent of Americans would prefer a smaller government that provided fewer health services, while a majority, 52 percent, said they would prefer a larger government that provided more health services. From the Poll:

The chart from the report compares the health care question to polling on the issue of whether Americans prefer a smaller or larger government in general. It shouldn’t be surprising that Americans like the role the government plays in health care given that Medicare is by far one of the most popular federal programs.
The poll also found that 52 percent of those polled said their top health concern was cost, followed by the issues uninsured/access to care at 18 percent.
We know from international experiences that if we actually had a larger role for government in our health care system, in the form of single payer (Medicare for all), that would dramatically reduce health care costs and eliminate the issue of people being uninsured.

It would also eliminate health insurance
companiescartels and I have yet to get a satisfactory explanation why that isn’t a good thing. This may be true for the 99 percent, but the one percent who profit from the current system don’t want to change it, and they are the ones who decide.
“eliminate the issue of people being uninsured.”
Eyes on prize, people. We must eliminate the issue of sick Americans’ inability to see a doctor.
Because socialism is anti ameriKan!
N Obama is a socialist!
That damned gubbermint better keep it’s hands off MY social security and medicare!
(too much chocolate chunk ice cream and m&m topping n methinks the sugar kicked in)
;-)
Keep your gubmint hands off my ice cream!
If a little well-intentioned socialism is anti-American, than I for one could do with some treason.
I like my ice cream real chocolatey with almonds and big dollop of socialism right on the top scooped into a plain cone of direct democracy.
N my merlot, too! Dammit!
Gimme my winery back!
People might want a more robust government presence regarding healthcare coverage because everyone’s skittish about employer-sponsored plans.
Unfortunately, employment prospects are bleak for a lot of people, so continued health insurance coverage is an iffy proposition, and corporate employers are proven untrustworthy, and the government represents the oligarchic interests of the Empire not the people.
Scary to have to put your trust in the U.S. government to preserve and protect something so basic as healthcare in America.
I’d like a dose of that AND choc chunk ice cream, m&m toppings, merlot, and a good aged whiskey now that I’m at it.
I scream, you scream, we all scream for a simple cone of democracy . . . ;-)
Somewhere in all this socialist hope is Pat Nixon’s simple cloth coat, a dog named CHeckers and the basset LBJ held up by the ears on national tv.
SImple folk, simple needs, ayup . . . ;-)
The RWJ poll shows the inaccuracy of both general questions and CBS/New York Times polls. “More services” allows the respondent to mentally fill in the blank with, say, financial aid to illegal immigrants rather than my health care or my libraries or my shuttle service from the assisted living facility to the grocery store.
Two words: Public option.
and you next diary will be about what 0-bummer is doing which might cost him getting re-elected …
hey – you EVER heard of this guy harris wofford and this guy James Carville?

Jon – you seem to be having a hard time accepting the FACT that the Dim-0-crap sell-0ut-0-fucks have become THE PROBLEM – cuz anyone who expects the fascist string pullers to do the right thing is dumber than a rock.
are you kicking it with mcjoan and laura clawson on dkos? let me help you write your diaries –

Yes, I think the reason people say they want smaller government is that they want to eliminate bad forms of big government, like too top heavy with bureaucracy, too much money spent on programs that only work to take our tax dollars and oppress us instead of help us, too much money spent on war and Homeland Security, etc. We want effective government, both cost effective and with programs that help us to survive, like medicare for all. What people really want is effective government. Ours is anything but right now. It is intense frustration that causes people to say they don’t want government at all, that is not realistic.
I sooo wish we could do health care reform smartly rather than politically. Medicare for All is a good start, but we can do better than that. Other industrialized nations pay less than half as much for their health care and they get significantly better quality outcomes than we get. What are they doing that we are not? single pool, medical home, government negotiated drug prices, no private insurance involvement in basic coverage, ACO hospital care? With so much savings in the offing, seems like we are just plain stupid. The old saying “with your eyes closed comes to mind”.
It’s interesting that conservatives think nothing of “socialist” govt. police care, fire department care, public roads and schools, but get scared of our tax dollars helping people survive with health care. Our govt. has yet to figure out — and I don’t think they ever will — that unless they work harder at keeping us alive, which includes some type of single-payer health care, and more generous bennies for disabled and elderly people, that there won’t be enough that they’ll earn in taxes to keep this country running.
If all the choices are on the table, nobody will choose the public option. They will choose single payer.
a nation that makes mega corp profits and mega CEO bonuses off the sick and needy is a nation destined for third world status.
look around it is coming like a tidal wave.
