Today I was down by the White House to witness the massive protest against the new Keystone XL pipeline that would bring tar sands oil from Canada down to American refineries on the Gulf of Mexico. Thousands showed up to cover the multiple city blocks it takes to fully circle the White House. The protesters all came out to send a single clear message to President Obama: use your power, do not approve the pipeline.
It was one of the most impressive protests I’ve ever experienced personally. The event was well run, had a massive turnout and was full of great energy.
Below are some pictures from the event:

About FDL Action
Go Peeps! and Thank You!
thanks so much Jon !!
and thanks for being there
wonderful pics – hard to pick a favorite but I do like the Occupy
w00t!
Well done.
On an earlier post today we speculated whether the news organizations would cover the protest/encirclement. I had the both ABC and CBS coverage and both covered the event, both covered the Oklahoma earthquake, and neither one made the connection that the pipeline, as proposed, would go directly through this area not to mention the Ogallala (sp) Aquifer. Really sad, but I suppose the announcers are “under orders…”
I would like to add my congratulations to all who were able to make the protests. You folks rock!
Great pictures!
Gee, this seems like something Barack Obama might have once supported (or so he said).
Thanks for being there.
Yes especially liked that one.
O never supported anything environmental. One of his largest contributors is Excelon, nuke power plant builder. In his first year, O rewarded them with $9 billion taxpayer money for power plant that will never get built.
Very nice and thanks to you and Jane for bringing the reports to us.
Yes, thanks for the update but until you can put 1 million or more in Washington Square on a Tuesday or any day congree and 0 or in town this just news on the net.
Yes, I do agree that it has to start somewhere, just look at where the Nam protest stared and how many people where there.
I’m a big fan of OWS and wish I had a few extra $ to send, but if this move into big numbers by Sept. 2012 to really large meetings of the minds that we all are being taken to the cleaners then we are toast people. You have to educate the other side that they to are being taken and they are starting to pay attention. The true founders of teaparty sees this (modren day), yes before repugs took it over, they weren’t old crazy/mean white people.
I want to say thanks to everyone who works/comments/donates at this site. No not the trolls;)
I really enjoyed watching online today. Many many many thanks to all who made that happen.
Indeed. I was being snarky. O sold the sizzle, not the steak. That is, he sold himself, running on hope & change, and everyone was encouraged to believe. But O was not really that person. The warnings were there, to be sure, but for many people the disappointment is crushing.
I’m not crushed – just terminally cynical. Even if Obama wins again, it means nothing.
Agree. I caught on right away. But even so, O has continuously undershot my wildest imagination on how bad he could possibly be. Dude is really really evil.
I have to say that I knew he wasn’t who he claimed to be but I never suspected he would be as bad as he’s become. If I had known that, I would have exercised my write in option.
Do you think he spits out the stuff from Michelle’s garden right in front of everyone?
Our newspaper did a Fact-check on his claim that he had done 60% of his campaign promises….Fact-check didn’t agree….way less (To be accurate the categories were more varied…worked on, etc., but you get the idea)
Typed on earlier thread but cute enough to repeat: We still don’t know how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, but now we do know how many protesters it takes to surround the WH. X3 (or more).
Only at a beer summit.
On edit: Isn’t Michelle now doing ads for manufactured foods? I think I saw a headline to that effect.
And: Do you think he’ll approve the pipeline, cancel it, or kick the can down the road?
(I know, if he could do all three, he would.)
What did you think were the biggest signs? The FISA vote? I have a “friend” who early on thought he was a ….”I don’t know what he is.” But she would never have liked him anyway….
My first clue was in 2006 when he endorsed and campaigned for Joe Lieberman, even though he wasn’t the Democratic nominee. That was the first. The next were FISA and TARP in rapid succession and the whole “looking forward, not back”™ horse crap.
WTF are ‘manufactured foods’? I know about attempts to grow meat from test tube stem cells. Also I’ve had Tang and Velveeta.
When Rick Warren was invited to give the invocation at Obama’s inauguration, I had a very, veryyyy bad feeling, and it’s been all downhill since, horribly so.
Obviously approve it.
That doesn’t mean it will be built. After all, the taxpayer money that will be given to XL to facilitate their job creation would be much more profitable if directed to their bottom line without building anything.
Thinking that’s the plan.
Media, including alternative, always lose track of these long term projects.
Like did NYC ever get the $20 billion legislated after 9/11. Don’t recall seeing any ‘books closed’ reports on that.
To name but one.
Manufactured foods are everything you eat that is not around the periphery of the supermarket.
Lieberman was O’s mentor at the Senate. You knew that. Didn’t you ever pledge a fraternity?
What a fall! Occupy has made the whole scene catch fire!
Then if he’s not re-elected or if he’s impeached early and often, the next in line can rescind the approval?
Thanks…doesn’t even get to the Single Payer question…I agree below…The Warren choice was stunning. One can think populist appeal, but really stranger than that….maybe some trade off out of the Warren conversation with O & McCain.
A frat??? Me??? LMAO!!!
Yes, Obama promised a surge in the pointless war effort in Afghanistan, and to follow the Bush draw down plan in Iraq. That should’ve been enough to know what O was about! But still, everyone really hoped for something better after W., and people desperately wanted to believe.
It didn’t work out that way.
Well, No, but is that our model for our highest institutions? Geeeeeez: Get a Keg….
WTF, are you daydreaming? Next in line will double down.
Remember when Ralph Nader held up a box of cereal and said the cardboard has more nutritional value than the contents?
Outstanding. Great event. Thanks, Jane, Jon and whoever else from FDL was there. And thanks to the 12,000 others who gave the WH a peek at what real democracy looks like.

Never had to do a prune race?
I read on politico quite a few think he’s going to punt so that he doesn’t split the base again (I guess he can only do that so many times) so that he can have it both ways. Sounds like AitchD @ 21 has him pegged.
This is how it’s going to be spinned:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1111/67645.html
Hey Margaret, don’t get on your high horse. We all make mistakes. *g*
I pledged & got into a sorority in HS. Still have the pics from frosh & soph year in my attic to shame me.
Brings back some very bad, but funny memories from frosh year. I was schmart enough to figure out that’s what the in-girlz did. Somewhere during the process, I thought, incoherently, WTF was I doing. Nonetheless completed the process. By middle of soph year had it figured out & dropped out without making a fuss.
Do I detect an ounce of respect for US Senators?
No I don’t remember that, but it certainly makes the point.
I would trust eCAHN’s forecasting waaaaaaay more than Politico’s.
Some would assert that O was CIA agent on site when U.S. was beefing up in Afghanistan in 81.
You were probably working hard, I think it was on Mike Douglas or Merv Griffin.
From you or from me? None intended….I was struck dumb by your question?
Great pix. Thanks to everyone who
was there + everyone who reported this!
Honour Society drove me crazy tryin’ to get me to join. Had to sell fuckin’ candy to get in. Told ‘em where they could put their candy.
Well, I haven’t figured out how O is gonna hide/spin approval, other than possibly the jobz/energy independence excuse. So who knows, Politipoo, like a stopped clock, could be getting it right this time.
Forecasting is a losers’ game, dontcha know.
What one learns….I always thought it had something to do with grades…
FISA. I knew he was a corporatist but maybe not as much as Hillary. Turned out to be just as bad or a worse neoliberal. Wish I’d seen the Hamilton Project speech video when it was done.
WIth the right kind of free software you could embed young Barry into a few scenes in that Tom Hanks movie, Charlie Wilson’s War, and upload to YouTube.
Yeah, me too. I was carryin’ a 4.0.
NO! Nobody ever really dared to require me to do anything like that. The few that tried only ever tried once. I had no use for that kind of thing. The only organized school activity I ever belonged to was the science club and there was no initiation involved.
The NSA keeps removing my snark tags and giggles before the comment posts.
x2
;) Congratulations…You didn’t need their candy.
ROFLMAO. Really. BC I’ve already thought of that.
Here are the linky dinks. Don’t blame me. I didn’t record Manning.
Manning on didn’t go to Columbia

No problem….You got a lot of mileage outta it…..
ROFLAMAO. Only bc I already thought of that.
Here are the linky dinks. Don’t blame me. I didn’t record them, I just found them. And if this repeats earlier comment it’s bc that one didn’t show up on my computer.

Two responses eaten by toobz. Mebbe they’ll show up in due course.
Heh, I didn’t have the dust to hang out in the bars any more so I had to stay home and study.
Could that much secrecy have made it through the campaign? Hard to believe.
Huh…at that point are you talking hs or college? Looks like you took a much wiser track.
That happened to me last week. If I used the reply link or the link link my comment got eated. If I wrote a straight comment and used a pasted url it posted. Did a “Hey, mods” comment and a bit later it cleared up.
In my first computer science class the instructor said, “I’m going to teach you how computers work. ‘P’ ‘F’ ‘M’. Pure. Fucking. Magick.”
Young Barry wouldn’t have had to know he was being handled in that way. As far as reporting the equivalent of a rumor, the pros require multiple sources, which wouldn’t be forthcoming. On blogs everything was speculated.
College. When they first told me about it, which was the first meeting, I thought to myself, self, you sold candy in high school. You’re a 53yo combat vet and these people want you to sell fuckin’ candy? I was very polite and said no thank you. They pestered me til they finally got the message.
Yesterday, in reply, I tried to post quoted passages from wiki’s article about Credit Unions, but the thread didn’t accept it. Thought, okay, too much verbatim, modbots are chilled about DMCA stuff. So I just posted “Credit Union” and the wiki URL, but it still wouldn’t go through. I figure it’s an anomalous glitch, some days less anomalous than others.
Yeah, that’s one of my dilemmas. Trying again with some other links. Look at what Occi & Columbia say about O’s becoming prez. You know Sherlock Holmes The Dog That Didn’t Bark. Doesn’t what is left out of these announcements speak volumes?
Here’s Occidental’s FAQs page about O:
http://www.oxy.edu/x7992.xml
Here’s a completely made up story about when O attended Occi; quotes more from Dreams than from anyone who knew him back in the day
http://www.oxy.edu/x8273.xml
Columbia announcement that O is first grad to bc U.S. prez
http://www.college.columbia.edu/news/barack-obama-83-becomes-first-college-alumnus-to-win-presidency
And, for comparison, here’s Eureka on Reagan. http://reagan.eureka.edu/
Granted Eureka needs the publicity more than Columbia, but still…
A man of character….I guess that was the confusion of the story…surely that would be high school….but nooooo. Esp when you think about the grade requirement…weird, SD…
Really? The instructor spelled ‘magick’ the right way?
If he were CIA agent he was overtly recruited at Occi and knew about it.
Dreams is perfectly drafted to hide his past. I’ve read it twice, and scanned the Occi/Columbia chapters for the third time. Both are exceedingly unusual in the sense that they are all about O’s internal searches for himself and NOTHING about what he actually did at those schoolz.
I don’t know how O strikes you, but the solitary, introspective picture in Dreams strikes me as exactly the opposite to who we now observe.
Do you think his teeth are his own natural teeth?
Oh really, do you think I have nothing better to do with my time than to google peeps’ teeth.
Having typed that, I have been know to type that the Kochs have really nice sets of choppers.
So touche!
OT: Our paper had a very favorable review of the new S. Jobs biography….I am not sure I need to read a whole book, but must be very well-written….
Take care….Sweet dreams…(Sorry I didn’t have more Cat’day time)
We have a local BQ place with sign to say: Don’t need no teef to eat our beef…..So you’ll know….
LOL
He may have been recruited. CIA people can be honorable. They’re not all spooks and ‘agents’. Of course it would have been wise to remain discreet and finally keep it hidden.
heh, heh, I’m not the least bit interested in Steve Jobs.
Well, ever since Seinfeld, everyone looks like they have miniature bathroom commodes and sinks in their mouths.
That could be my fave beef place. Had some filet like that a couple of weeks ago. It took 2 tries at the restaurant, as the first time we were served coulda come from the fridge. But that’s a long & boring story. When we finally got the well prepared food, the filet was both warm, incredibly tasty and soft as a …
[Don't want to mess up the taste picture with an inappropriate analogy.]
Didn’t know the origin. Thanks for the edumacation.
Vanity, vanity, thy name is [insert fave name here].
Bob Jones Restaurants are for such toofless folks. You always see their marquee with ‘Try Our Boneless Ribs’. But the next week the sign reads ‘Now Accepting Applications’. Makes you wonder.
Honorable must be one of the key wordz in CIA oaths of occifes.
Don’t know about your line of work, but in mine — college instructor early 1970′s — home phone was tapped, plants in my classes, I didn’t know if they were FBI (Treasury), state auditors, CIA, state or county police. But I knew who they were, and that made everything very easy for me and impossible for them. Understand, they were checking me out b/c I was considered subversive and dangerous.
Edit: reply @ 83
Cabinet picks were the first giveaway.
Jon, while you and many others were participating in a “most impressive” protest, I understand the Big O was over in Virginia at a golf course working on his game. I do hope that a reporter asks Art Carney at the press conference how O’s game is coming along.
Do tell!
Yep. Compare the list of accomplishments the O’bots serve up to a list of everything that involved caving, failure and victory for the other side. And you’ll see no comparison.
Great signs. Not that I agree with the message, but I appreciate good graphics.
Thanks everybody, just love love for the world.
Now all we need are some corporate sponsored trouble makers to mix in.
On guard, always always on guard.
