That giant sucking sound you hear today is the sound of jobs being outsourced as President Obama signs into law three free trade deals; South Korea, Colombia and Panama. According to the Economic Policy Institute, passing the Korea Free Trade deal will likely cost this country 159,000 jobs.
The three trade deals remain basically unchanged since George W. Bush negotiated them in his last term when he was unable to get them approved by the Democrats in Congress. Just like it took Nixon to go to China, it apparently takes a Democratic president to force through NAFTA-style free trade agreements that destroy American jobs.
Why would Obama push through jobs destroying trade deals in the middle of a jobs crisis? Possibly, as part of Obama’s extreme bipartisanship fetish he is willing to do anything to attract bipartisan support; but more likely, he did it because the biggest corporate lobbyists have been pushing hard it for years.
The passage of these three free trade deals tells you something important about President Obama and many members of Congress. The problem isn’t that most of our elected officials actually want to destroy Americans who have jobs, all things being equal they do want Americans to have jobs. The problem is protecting American jobs is a much lower priority for Obama and most members of Congress than is giving the large corporate lobbyists what they are willing to donate millions to see advanced.
It is always good to be reminded where you stand.

About FDL Action
We know these deals will cost jobs but each senator thinks the job losses be in someone else’s state, and so they can pocket the pro-FTA campaign money with a clean conscience. Meanwhile the American organized labor movement goes down the drain.
Even Al Franken, who campaigned on a promise to oppose all three FTAs supported the Korea agreement.
Sanders didn’t vote on the Korea FTA. Not sure what’s up with that.
Hey Jon, thanks for the graph. All except the obamabots have known this for at least a year now. Heck, even the OWS people know this. That is why so many of us saw the bo jobs bill as a sick and cynical joke on the american people. Not only was it feeble with no chance of passing, it would have been offset by the bo trade deals.
Obama is such a disgusting individual. I hope that spit he’s hurling at our faces occurs with a headwind, right back in his face!
I liked Franken when he was a comedian, not a Senator. I find nothing amusing about him these days.
Al Franken is a bigger disappointment than Obama. He is such a failure that when his name was just mentioned, I realized that I had not thought of him in months.
It’s fine to excoriate Obama and his administration, which is failed and furthermore is a naked disaster for the American people and the vision of competent, un-corrupt governance we would all like to see.
Just remember next year: many of us hope to see Firedoglake not fall in line with The Nation and other leftist sites/publications, and start playing the game of lesser-evilism. Next year, many of us hope to see Firedoglake explaining to readers and the public why it is that we should either support a third-party candidate, or not vote for the two-party President/Vice-President tickets available.
Time to start co-operatives. Time to start our own medical clinics. Time to have a general strike. Time to organize your neighbors to start block gardens. Time to learn to can food. Time to share cars in the neighborhood. Time to take care of the neighborhood children after school if you are not working or are working from home. Time to make the politicians and the corporations irrelevant. Fuck Obama and the Bush he rode in on.
“The word bipartisan means some larger-than-usual deception is being carried out”. – George Carlin
You don’t have to worry about that.
In other words, Occupy Your Neighborhood!
Environmental groups are suing the EPA; why can’t labor unions sue the Department of Labor or some other administration component over these “free” (ie, exploitative and destructive) trade pacts? Isn’t the DOL supposed to be protecting American labor? What is the Federal agency that is most involved with administering and enforcing these pacts when it comes to labor concerns?
It’s be just lovely to head in 2012 with labor unions and environmental groups locked up in lawsuits against the Democratic Party’s presidential administration in this way. It’d be just a lovely, lovely segue into a presidential season where Obama becomes his party’s campaign figurehead, explaining to large portions of his party’s supposed constituents why it is they should vote for Democrats when their organized activist and collective bargaining entities are suing to have the actions of the Democrats stopped.
As Hillary said during the campaign about Obama’s position on NAFTA; shame on you, Barack Obama.
No nonsense commentary from the no-nonsense Black Agenda Report :

BAR folks have been saying this for a while.
Right now, I am looking forward to the first presidential year in memory in which I am going to be free of going to primary caucuses, and giving money to campaigns, and doing other time donations to the party’s causes. It’s going to be a very relaxing year for me in this respect. Not having a dog in the race will make it easy to just laugh at the foolishness and go on about my merry way.
union leaders are still smoking the Democratic party crack pipe. Or getting beaten by Dems hoping the morale improve.
My 2 cents: Unions should stop supporting Dems and organize for strictly labor-oriented candidates only. Another idea is to pool the money and start labor-oriented media.
“Hillary” was paying Mark Penn to talk to the labor-union-activist-murdering Colombians on her behalf while publicly opposing “free” trade. “Hillary” is one of the biggest pathological liars and manipulators in public life today. Nothing the woman says can be believed, and nobody ever knows what it is she is really up to with the positions she holds.
Did Clinton the Lesser say that to Obama before, or, after telling everyone how she landed in Bosnia on a peace mission and had to run off the tarmac under sniper fire?
Al Franken made lots more sense as a comedian. He is becoming a joke as a senator. He said with a straight face recently that jobs are going abroad because we are not educated enough. And he supports Obama-Duncan’s rightwing education deform horror show.
Though he compares favorably to our other senator Amy “bipartisanshit” Klobuchar.
I have a friend who has a friend (LOLOL) who got one of those McArthur Genius grants, edumacation (another LOLOL) & is working with Franken. She (friend’s friend) started in September and I’ve been bugging the midwife for a month about Franken disappearance from anything we would find acceptible. Embarrassed silence…
Small towns: occupy post office on Sat morning & chat up neighbors.
I think the unions should try to sue the Federal government over these pacts. They should sue and sue and sue and sue and take it to the media. Let Obama and his party go to into their election season with half their fucking base activists either suing their executive branch or in full-throated support of the lawsuits. And I think the unions and environmentalists should keep the lawsuits going past election day. These lawsuits should greet the next president, whoever s/he is.
OMG. See my 18. “Genius grant” in edumacation working with Franken is named Sharon Hessney. I met her about 30 years ago. Will certainly keep track of how corrupt this turns out to be.
That’s our Barry !… one minute on a jobs crusade and the next minute destroying a few hundred thousands jobs with the stroke of a pen. He kind of kissed off any chance of winning Pennsylvania or Ohio, or Wisconsin. I don’t think he’ll need those states since he’s gonna sweep the states with all the independent voters.
The Columbia deal is a bit troubling, I guess it’s ok to murder union organizers now, maybe that’s the message in the Columbia deal, maybe Rand Paul will intruduce a bill that makes it legal to kill union organizers here stateside, I think it’s already ok to do that in Kentucky.
Not just onion workers.
Senate Democrats are like the L.A. Clippers: just being part of the roster makes you a loser, no matter how much talent you possess. If we could bring LBJ back from the dead and put him back in the Senate, he’d turn into a junior-varsity Mark Pryor within weeks.
How’s that hopey-changey stuff workin’ out for ya?
About as well as the Iranian Rev worked out for the hopey-changey stuff for the Iranian peeps.
Great quote!
Wow, three NAFTAs!
Makes Clinton look like a reasonable Republican!
I walked into my local grocery store and they tried to rob me. $ 8.49 for a gallon of milk, $ 3.79 for a dozen eggs, $9.89 for a pound of roast beef. $ 16.98 for a pound of salmon.
How the heck are people raising a family? Is everyone on food stamps?
Everyone knows that peep who cannot support familize should not have children. /s
Freaking RIGHT Mary… We in my little neighbor are already those type of things… I help my neighbors who ask in all things to do with technology.. TV Computers and just plain old physical help they may need.. Oh and the bounties of the garden and fruit trees… We all have to help each other..
Corporations want it so they get it. Real simple
One thing everyone who cared to find out could have known is that AIG, Goldman Sachs and the pharmaceutical industry gave more money to Obama than either Hillary or McCain. If Hillary was going to be even better for them than Obama, why did they bother?
They got what they paid for. Did you?
Obama wanted the deal with SK so they can continue building their base there for military operations. Chomsky has an article regarding the base. which is very close to China. just my opinion
this almost sounds like someone who yearns for the warmonger Hillary to be president. that is like saying there is a difference between the republicans and the democrats.

Correction: Wrong Hastings.
You’re suggesting Clinton would have used more force in Afghanistan and Iraq than Obama? I’m sure she would have quadrupled the size of Gitmo too.
There is something truly sick about a man who gets elected to the senate and is plotting his path to the white house before he’s found the men’s room. There is no evidence that Obama has ever put any issue or even any person ahead of the advancement of Obama. Even in the world of high level politicians his ambition for its own sake is off the scale.
don’t forget about our daring Amy authoring the bill for the radiation rapa scan machines for all airports. Al Franken was a DLC dem and close friends with the Clintons all along. Oh well, as long as we continue to vote for the people who fool us the best, this is what we get and I am so glad to be able to say as a life long democrat I did not vote for either of them.
Jane was right about Bernie Sanders. Not voting against the FTA is such an act of cowardice that it shows a man who has no conviction behind his progressive bluster.I hope the dems don’t send this windbag to OWS under the veneer of being an independent.
I tried to EDIT this but to no avail.
Wrong Hastings. Alcee voted against these free trade agreements.
At least equal to. I will never forget when she said she was voting to give Bush the power to go to war in Iraq and he had better not abuse it. Really? what was she going to do about it? this was a man who stole an election and she did not think he would abuse a vote to go to war. She is the only person who has ever been held accountable for that vote.
There are all sorts of things that Hillary Clinton has been held uniquely accountable for. And if Obama had been there, he have voted against it, much like his courageous stand on FISA.
I did not hear what jane said about Bernie, but he sure is a wind bag and never backs up he says . His rhetoric is great. e.g. won’t support the health care bill w/o a public option and votes for it anyway. He talks tough about Obama and all his republican stances and then continues to support him. We could really use some people with principles that don’t leave them at the door when a democrat is elected.
Good night all. It’s past my bedtime.
I did not nor have I ever supported Obama and after that FISA vote when so many people called him and said not to allow immunity to the telecons for spying on Americans, I knew then he would never listen to the people, but for some reason people did not seem to care about that. Don’t think for a minute all that O has done has been just for him. He has been groomed for this job for a long time. No repubican could have ever gotten away with what he has and what he will. Just like no republcian could have screwed us on so many policies as what Clinton did. Many of the troubles in this country today are a direct result of the last Dem president and that is because people within our democratic party will support them no matter what they do as long as they say they are dems. And with no pressure from within your own party, why would he care? I just talked with one tonight and they all say the same exact thing “you have no alternatives, look at the republicans.
It’s critical (and ultimately extremely depressing) to note how these neoliberal policies intersect, harmonize and reinforce each other. Talk about planned economy vs “liberty” – neoliberalism has one aim that everything and everyone must bend to.
Anyway, I was listening to a discussion about the future of American jobs on NPR (it’s important to know thine enemy), and all of the talking heads couldn’t wait to posit an education crisis, spewing the usual lies about our utterly broken public education system and so on. So, the manufactured crisis of mass unemployment and decreasing living standards is used a hammer to smash what’s perhaps our most vital democratic institution: public education.
Nice little system they’re running, eh?
The US is going bananas. Our Congress is out of control, and our President is busy murdering US citizens without any trial and on the verge of going berserck because noone is taking his ZETA informant Saudi Ambassador exploding conspiracy very seriously. Meantime Congress is gaily exporting our jobs and ideas to rather dubious countries for what reason remains shrouded in mystery. The demonstrators are just about played out and if the popos start evicting them then I guess the planned revolution will be triggered and the military coup d’etat will be underway.
The vote of the cuts to the family planning part of Obama care were passed today too. Congress can pass bills but they have to be really unpopular and utterly retarded to make it to the Oval Office. The 25th Amendment Section 4 allows for a president who displays mental problems to be set to the side, and for the power to be passed to an interim panel or council of Administrative Authority under Congress’s direction. Impeachment is another option. We the people have the right to dissolve a government that is not acting in our interest, and the time has certainly come.
What are we all waiting for? A revolution that will lead to a military coup d’etat? I don’t think so……………………
Pelosi voted yea.
Not on Columbia.
The good news is, voters do have a choice. In 2012 my choice is to vote AGAINST EVERY Incumbent who’s running for reelection, BOTH Parties.
Where the fuck do you shop at for groceries? Tiffany’s?
In Bernie’s defense, he is very beholden to the Dem leadersheep for his committee appointments. It’s possible he may just employ the better to retreat and fight another day since he could not really stop it. All asid and done, he is the best Senator there, hands down.
