Dr. Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese, two of the principle organizers of the October2011 protest in Washington DC, discussed their plans for the upcoming occupation of Freedom Plaza with FDL members at our recent webinar. The demonstration will start on Thursday October 6, and continue until they believe the government responds in a meaningful way — “symbolic gestures” are not enough.
They began the presentation by saying that if the American news media was really reporting on what was happening in the country, we would see that Americans are already in revolt. They indicate that the record poverty and widespread homelessness we are seeing is new, and that the wealth disparity between the top 1% and the rest of the country has grown dramatically since WWII and is now more extreme than it was during the Middle Ages:

The October2011 organizers are very clear about their demands: they want to end corporatism and militarism. They indicate that polling consistently shows a large majority of Americans support the following principles:
- Tax the rich and corporations
- End the wars, bring the troops home, cut military spending
- Protect the social safety net, strengthen Social Security and improvedMedicare for All
- End corporate welfare for the oil companies and other big business interests
- Transition to a clean energy economy, reverse environmental degradation
- Protect worker rights including collective bargaining, create jobs and raise wages
- Get money out of politics
They see three “independents” that are needed in order to change the direction that the country is going in:
- Independent movement
- Independent media
- Independent electoral politics
They both gave big props to FDL for creating a true independent media site, and we’re proud to be listed on their media page. But they also noted that their media strategy involves everyone who can do so becoming the media, and they encourage people to write about what’s happening from wherever they are.
Kevin Gotzsola’s peerless coverage of OccupyWallStreet from the first day goes to show what someone can do even from Chicago. I encourage anyone who wants to blog about what they are doing or seeing in the weeks to come to do so on MyFDL, where anyone can register and start blogging immediately.
With regard to the third pillar, independent electoral politics, Margaret noted that the time is probably not right to focus on it because no matter who you put into the system, the system is so broken that they will not be able to be effective. I have come to believe she is right about this.
Possibly the biggest problem with the so-called “progressive” movement that sprang up in response to the invasion of Iraq was that it was unified by scorn for George Bush, and never really coalesced as a true movement based on shared principles. Those of us who thought we shared principles, like ending the wars or torture or corporate ownership of the country, quickly saw that energy perverted toward a neoliberal corporatist agenda by Obama and the Democrats. Individuals and organizations who identified themselves as “progressive” were suddenly silent (if not actually complicit) with an agenda that would have horrified them if George Bush had embraced it. Their shifting standards and nebulous morality rendered the word “progressive” hollow and meaningless.
The willingness of the OccupyWallStreet demonstrators, the October2011 organizers, the Tar Sands protesters and others to put themselves on the line and force the government to be responsible to the will of the public is an indication that a true movement is building. But I’ll echo Kevin Gotzsola’s sentiments (7:55 PM) — this cannot be allowed to be co-opted by organizations who will try to turn it into a “Tea Party for the Democrats.” None of this would be happening had not the Democratic Party become so slavish from top to bottom to serving the demands of elites and corporations.
Independent electoral politics means independent. It does not mean conforming your values and objectives to align with the needs of the Democratic Party, as happened in the 2008 election. ”Hey, but we’re better than the GOP” is not a battle cry for change in anyone’s book.
Both Kevin and Margaret are experienced organizers, and they began organizing the October2011 protest in May of this year. Most recently they organized the Bradley Manning protests at the White House and at Quantico, and both of those events were executed just about flawlessly despite the many obstacles thrown at them for months by both the Marines and the Park Police.
We’re looking forward to continuing our extensive coverage of both OccupyWallStreet and October2011, as well as taking part ourselves. We’ll be having a Firedoglake meet-up at the October2011 occupation, details to be announced soon. If you’d like to help cover bringing Kevin Gotsztola to DC to cover the event, you can do it here. And if you’d like to support FDL by joining our membership program and taking part in webinars like this one, you can do it here.
You can find out more about October2011 at their website.
Update: ProfMarcus also has a post on the webinar up at MyFDL.

About FDL Action
Ah, Yes! The Peasants are revolting and media doesn’t like to show it.
Huzzah to the People!
FDL is Independent News and all Citizens can be journalists in one way or the other. I am so very proud to be a part of FDL.
Jane, I can’t tell you how inspiring it was to read those words: Americans are already in revolt.
I have been paying attention, but I had no idea how many actions have already been taking place across the country.
Americans are already in revolt.
Missed the webinar cuz I didn’t get there in time.
“The strongest bulwark of authority is uniformity; the least divergence from it is the greatest crime. The wholesale mechanisation of modern life has increased uniformity a thousandfold. It is everywhere present, in habits, tastes, dress, thoughts and ideas. Its most concentrated dullness is “public opinion.” Few have the courage to stand out against it. He who refuses to submit is at once labelled “queer,” “different,” and decried as a disturbing element in the comfortable stagnancy of modern life.” Emma Goldman, 1940
Like it is, Ms. Hamsher. We have to keep muttering “rubbish” from the opposition bench.
I’m really excited about the October2011 demonstration. Would like to be right in the middle of it and hope that there are millions there to represent the disenfranchised. Delighted that our own Kevin will be present to keep us posted.
It’s creepy to see the Democratic establishment organizations suddenly trying to co-opt this energy. A lot of shouting to be done, for sure.
Hello. You made it just at the right time, today.
Full house this week — Dday coming in tonight, Kevin G. and Dan Choi tomorrow, R.J. Eskow on Wednesday. And of course we have Ryan and Jon Walker here every day. So it’s going to be quite a lively week!
Got captured by a needy neighbor which put me an hour behind. By the time I go to the machine it was past 8. Not too pissed.
Heh, I was recounting for Jon Walker this morning the shit we took for refusing to endorse in the 2008 primary. Worth every bit of it, though. I would hate to have to look back now and explain why we endorsed either Obama or Clinton.
I think we were the only liberal blog that didn’t take a position. Just took massive crap from all sides for saying there was no difference between the two.
That’s very exciting. I hope that all of you have suntan lotion, lots of water, and loud voices. My best to all.
We’ll be even better prepared for the shit we get this time around. The neoliberals are gonna be on us like white on rice. I. can’t. fuckin’. wait.
I firmly believe that it’s actions like this one that are responsible for the sudden and awkward attempts to pivot (or fake a pivot, at least rhetorically) away from corporatism and the far right on Obama’s and the Congressional Democrats’ parts. Obama may finally realize that a) all his sellouts aren’t bringing enough Wall Street money into the coffers to allow him to simply smother a Republican opponent with a platinum-plated ad barrage, and b) all the ad money in the world won’t do him any good if he loses his base as well as the indies.
Forget the suntan lotion, get barrels of cop repellant.
What’s really hilarious is that to this day, the diehards on both sides are convinced (or squawk as if they’re convinced) that FDL did take a side in the primaries, and it wasn’t their side, sniff sniff pout.
At this point I have to think that it’s just plain trying to shove FDL in one direction or the other — a lot of these people are quite smart, and I’d rather not insult their intelligence by presuming them to be sincere whenever they claim that FDL always like Barack or John or Hillary better than anyone else in 2007 or 2008.
(Oops — the duplicate message wasn’t intended!)
I hate to be paranoid, but all morning my computer has been trying to keep me from accessing FDL. Just now it dumped me off, and I couldn’t reconnect. No trouble with other sites, just here….
Anyone else having problems?
If you’re using FireFox that may be the problem. FF has had some issues lately and issued an urgent update. The Lake’s been a little wiggy for me today as well but I think it’s FF more than the Lake.
There will be lawyers. And they will be drinking milkshakes.
I’ll be there (well, here since I live in DC) on Thursday for sure. I almost wonder whether Freedom Plaza is big enough with the expected influx Thurs-Sun from many OWS! folks in NYC. Although Freedom Plaza is also within spitting distance of the infamous anti-99%ers Chamber of
horrorsCommerce. If you’re coming from outside the area, the autumn temps have arrived and Thurs/Fri should be sunny in the high 60′s. Which is good; lotsa rain the last month. I’m bringing my vidcam, some H20, a smile, some participatory spirit and some brains. (BRAINS! Hey, you gotta eat, y’know!)
I have that breathless feeling like before jumping off a bridge into a river. I WANT a new world. It’s just a little frightening wondering what that world is going to look like. It makes me think of a quote I remember from somewhere, only it isn’t faith that makes me willing to move forward. I guess, being a humanist, it is the confidence that we truly are all in it together.
“When you come to the edge of all the light you know, and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen: There will be something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly.”
— Patrick Overton
I don’t buy the flying part, but I do believe that we will all be there to catch each other. :)

These principles are a good start and should be applied to all governments on a global scale. The world wide austerity movement forced by the banks and ratings agencies is indicative of how corporations have moved past the idea of nationalism and we the little people should as well. Every leader in the world should be actively trying to bring universal health care and education to their people and denying corporations the ability to exploit human labor anywhere in the world. Deny corporations the ability to poison the environment any where in the world by revoking their licenses to do business if they can not create environmentally safe products. Force these rapacious organizations to give back to the communities in which they deplete the resources from.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights should be the guiding principles of all nations and should be taught to all peoples around the world.
The protest here in America should not just be about freeing Americans from the financial war mongering oligarchs but the world as well.
GO FDL and all Firebaggers!
Great webinar.
Thanks to all.
Did you see the sign the vet had
“this is the second time I fought for my country
but the first time I know who my enemy is”
Be careful folks. Do not let Obama through his various minions and outlets try to co-opt this. He had his shot and we know who he works for.
We must stay awake so that the left does not try to co-opt this as the right did with the tea party. Keep demands loose at this point. stay flexible, stay fluid. trust the MSM will try to push those calling for this or that or wanting Obama etc as the message of the protestors. As they are trying to do here in New York.
Also Jane is you are friends with Michael Moore he needs some serious education. Capitalism is not the problem. We do not have capitalism we have a criminal monopoly system and that needs to end. As does our fake democracy
I saw a different pic a couple days ago but part of the sign was obstructed. I thought it said “1st” but wasn’t sure. I think vets should wear their top with ribbons to let the rubes know who they are right off the bat.
We need to stop referring to the government as the government. This government is the “elite controlled government entity, the global elite bought government organ, the former government now privatized. the New Privatized Government.
Government is a good thing. Right now , we don’t have one.
Bring UMBRELLAS and water proof hats for sure. You can get telescoping umbrellas that fold up to about ten inches.
You know that capitalism breeds monopolies right? And capitalism most definitely is the problem youre facing. Excellent demands suggested by the occupiers. Most of them incidentally going after capital and capitalists. You may not like the left, but the left sure will like you. The real left that is. Not the slighty-less-extreme-right-then-republicans democrats.
Do you think that the top 1% will release their grip without a serious fight, without violence?
