I was pleasantly surprised that President Obama in his deficit speech today didn’t publicly endorse cuts to Social Security benefits or call for any specific major cuts to Medicare benefits. This is a significant improvement compared to the trial balloons we have been seeing for the past months, which indicated raising the Medicare eligibility age could have been part of the Obama plan.
This is a positive development. Having President Obama publicly call for major cuts in Medicare benefits or change in age eligibility would have been terrible for our senior citizens and a total political disaster for the Democratic party. But it is important to remember: simply because the president did not put such cuts on the table doesn’t mean he took these cuts off the table.
President Obama has already privately signaled that in theory he would be willing to support major cuts to Medicare. And he’s hinted he’d be willing to cut Social Security benefits. They were both earlier put the table for a theoretical deal and this speech didn’t take them off the table. There was no veto threat to protect Medicare and Social Security benefits.
In fact, in his only veto threat Obama made it clear he would accept Medicare benefit cuts if they were accompanied by new tax revenue from the rich by saying, “I will veto any bill that changes benefits for those who rely on Medicare but does not raise serious revenues by asking the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations to pay their fair share.” That “but” is a very important clause that means there are scenarios in which Obama would sign a bill that significantly cuts Medicare benefits.
While it is good our Democratic President is at least not publicly pushing for major cuts in America’s social safety net, he has still very much left the door open to supporting major cuts in the future as part the grand bargain he has been pursuing almost since the day he took office.

About FDL Action
Jay Carney basically just said,”If we don’t cut Medicare, we will be forced to give Americans healthcare vouchers instead.” I am paraphrasing but that is their message. These guys are just Republicans who snuck in the back door wearing populist costumes.
Oh, hope springs eternal!! Cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and SS shouldn’t be in the room, much less on the table. Any democrat that wants any cuts to already meager social safety nets is not worth my vote. Get out of Afghanistan, Iraq and ditch the Bush tax cuts. BTW, how do you define “major” cuts to the social safety net? The amounts most get are so skimpy, any cut will be major. Let’s get real here.
Oh man, these guys have got to go. No difference with the thugs.
Obama will give the Republicans everything they want and destroy Social Security and Medicare on their behalf. This is just a pitifully late, half-effort to tell liberals that Obama has their back in order to stanch the bottom dropping out of his ratings. The big capitualtion is signed, sealed and delivered.
“I will veto any bill that changes benefits for those who rely on Medicare but does not raise serious revenues by asking the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations to pay their fair share.”
What the hell good does that do for poor Medicare recipients? How does this help people? It doesn’t.
It may give him a nice bipartisan-y glow but it does nothing for people who would suffer because of cuts to Medicare.
At this point he’d better just shut up because the more he talks the angrier I get.
Yes, it is great that THIS TIME, unlike say last month or three months ago, Obama did not actively DEMAND Social Security and Medicare cuts.
But since his Secretary of Defense is running around taking DEFENSE CUTS off the table and his secretary of Health is NOT running around taking Medicare cuts off the table …
This guy is a total weasel. If he does not get his “Grand Bargain” now, you can be sure he will destroy these programs when reelected.
Nothing he says or signals or hints at or promises can be trusted.
And as for demanding those big revenue increases, he will cave on that as he caved on other stuff like “I will not sign HCR unless it contains a strong public option” and “I will only support HCR with drug price negotiation (while he privately promised otherwise to pharma, and kept that promise)”.
Obama only keeps his promises to the well-connected. Promises to the people at large are just blather. In fact, the man has been known to laugh out loud when asked about campaign promises.
This rotten individual has got to go .. into super-rich, richy rich retirement. He must be removed from the political scene. I consider it actually better to deal with a Republican weasel who looks and talks like a weasel than the weasel in sheep’s hide we have now.
Man, I love how predictable this site is. Obama proposes a new higher tax rate on millionaires and the response is “No difference from the thugs”. And hey, he might still cut Medicare! Let’s hate him for something he hasn’t done and ignore what he’s actually proposed!
When it comes to President Obama, Firedoglake is always finding a dark cloud around the silver lining.
So the weasel keeps saying things like “everyone must pay their fair share” .. exactly why do current and future Social Security recipients have to pay their fair share, given that Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit, not now and not in 25 yrs. .. It is totally self-funded.
And why do Medicare and Medicaid recipients have to pay their fair share, given that it is horrendous health care COSTS that are swamping us, and those COSTS keep rising. Obama’s proposals so far do nothing to target the overall costs, they just shift them to the health care recipients and away from the government.
Since the government is in a much stronger position to bargain with a health care provider than, say, me, this is one crummy thing to do. It guarantees costs will continue to skyrocket.
Notice Mr. Obama-scum (weasel) is not asking to negotiate drug prices, which could cut about 1/2 a trillion off of government costs in ten yrs. Half a trillion … SAVED. But wait, no, lets do Medicaid vouchers instead!!! Let that poor 90 yr. old lady negotiate directly with the nursing home while clutching her voucher!
He’s got to go. He’s got to go.
It is pretty much cowardly squared, to tell everyone you are making “tough decisions”, then to go and sock it to your mom and dad and their moms and dads.
Another week, another presidential speech. yaaaawwnn.
The only reason obama is saying things like this is because hes trying to kiss the asses of any liberals who might still be considering voting his lying corrupt ass in 2012. Obama is a pathological liar.
Yes, Obama hasn’t ruled out cutting Medicare — therefore he’s clearly going to do it!
Since Obama has also not ruled out allowing Halliburton to process poor people into food products, clearly this is his intention as well!
Man, what a rotten guy that Obama is.
Why should he? He’s already signaled how many times his willingness.
How is it a good thing that he can BE everything to everyone by making inconsistency his strength?
Yeah, he means it this time.
I think it is important that all the talk is about closing loopholes not raising rates. Loopholes can be reopen after Social Security and Medicare are gutted.
With the economy in an uncontrollable dive Obama’s chances are slim and none. As 3dpartypls indicates he’s just rearranging the deck chairs on his Titanic presidency now.
Didn’t Obama just give a speech during the ‘budget negotiations’saying SS and Medicare were off limits, then turned around and offered those cuts despite the fact that Republicans had backed off a little? What sort of psychotic lunatic are we dealing with? He thinks we’re idiots.
Oh, you liberals and progressives ought to stop bitchin’ and whining. It’s time to grow up and realize BO is doing the best he can for ya under the circumstances. Well, that’s what Jonathon Alter(sp?) says. I heard him over the weekend doing his usual shill for BO.
He hates it when he has to listen to or read firebaggers here or Glenn Greenwald here:
http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/09/19-6
That’s another thing that I find infuriating. “He’s doing the best he can!” Like he’s a learning-disabled middle-school child, and he’s just precious and why won’t everyone stop picking on him. Bah.
I’d be interested in cutting the Medicare drug benefit. That might force the hand of jackass politicians by increasing pressure on those toads to let Medicare negotiate prices.
More people should eat the catfood or die quickly because it might cause politicians to reconsider?
I’m on Medicare with a supplemental policy for drugs and my co-pay for drugs amounts to about $2500 a year. That’s not a fortune and I’m grateful to have the policy but it would be great for it to be lower.
Did I hear right? Did Paul Ryan (House) and Lindsey Graham (Senate) use code to say that Obama is a Muslim from Kenya?
It’s amazing all the crap you get in defense of BO.
Add to this, you get guys like Alter who want us to stop whining, and the other hand you have BO’s other apologist who say we aren’t “making him do it”. We aren’t pushing him hard enough.
We get criticized at both ends. Perhaps that’s the real eleventy dimensional chess being played. Except BO is using it against liberals!
Same bullshit, different day. Is it any wonder King Chaos is so hated by the people?
I had the same impression from Obama’s statement – if you cut 1% of the tax on yellow-speckled corporate jet sales, we’ll make our seniors pay another couple grand a year, and make them wait till 67 for Medicare.
That’s Obama’s idea of “shared sacrifice” – the rich lose one percent and the rest of us lose our life savings to pay medical bills.
“making him do it”
Can’t make 0bama do what he never intended and what he absolutely opposes. About the only thing you can make the Big 0 do is impose more austerity as he always intended and actually supports. Must make a show of it though, can’t just spring it on the people.
Same bullshit President, different day. It’s campaign season for jiminy crickets. The people gushing over campaign 0bama being back without acknowledging it’s just all pillow talk, baby, turn my stomach, argh.
I don’t think he’s hated unless you mean the watered down form meaning dislike. When I think of people who hate him, it’s usually people who think he’s one of those scary socialists which is laughable and therefore hard to take their dislike seriously.
yep
Pretty much the new season of Kabuki theater. The R’s will not accept tax increases so this is dead in the water. He is really transparent isn’t he?
For those who like to use US Treasury yields as a gauge of economic confidence, you might be interested that the ten-year bond crashed well through the 2% floor today and is currently at 1.93%. The Dow Jones average is down more than 200 points and the Euro is being furiously propped up by the ECB and the Germans at $1.36.
Meanwhile, can we please have the full transcript of preznit’s speech? None of the major print media bothered to put up a transcript yet, AFAIK. The MSNBC transcript is bizarre; they ran out of capital letters, apparently.
The table seems pretty full at this point. They might have to add some extension leaves.
The President’s strategy of seeking to mildly rebalance a regressive tax code (though *not* actually seeking to make it as progressive as it was in recent U.S. history) tied to Medicare cuts is disastrous. In fact, I would argue it puts a wrecking ball to the remnants of American liberalism.
Think of what it signals to the citizens of this country. It effectively says: liberalism is first and foremost about raising taxes, and secondarily about making cuts in health care and social insurance, albeit smaller ones than those proposed by conservatives. You’re a liberal as long as you tie any deeply reactionary policy, like cutting Medicare or switching to a chained consumer price index, with a closure of some tax loopholes for the wealthy.
Not only is it disastrous to liberalism and progressivism, it is almost entirely backwards. The reason why the left supports higher taxes on the rich is in order to:
1. Fund social programs like Medicare, public resources and infrastructure, and research and development.
2. Limit the growth of the level of inequality that would otherwise lead to the monopolization of power by the owners of capital, and thus to the evisceration of programs like Medicare.
However, let’s be frank. The above rationale is antithetical to the current Democratic Party. Obama speaks not alone, but *on behalf* of a Democratic Party that has all but jettisoned it’s moorings in a now moribund labor movement in favor instead of Wall Street. Indeed, the Democrats, as seen even in liberal states like New York, where the Andrew Cuomo has taken an intransigently anti-union stance, are now unabashedly the enemies of organized labor. And as seen in the Democratic drive for school “reform”, they are the opponents of unionized American teachers. Whereas in the past, they were at least supporters of corrupted and compromised labor unions that mostly worked hand in glove with big business.
Is this really the best that the new, gianter, NBC+Comcast media juggernaut can produce?
Excerpt from MSNBC’s primitive transcript of preznit’s speech:
Meanwhile, No. You dumb twat, this is exactly backward:
The government is NOT a “family.” How many times must we correct you? Stupid. Go sit in the fucking corner.
great analysis. just contrast what preznit said today (and failed to say) with what Vince Cable said at the Liberal-Democrats party conference in the UK. Even the Lib Dems have more balls than our Democratic preznit.

more from MSNBC’s bizarro-world cut-rate transcript (robot generated?):
thanks but I boycott the WH website.
The NEA was quick to pledge allegiance to Obama’s re-election. Teachers in the classroom know how disastrous the consequences of NCLB and 0bama’s NCLB on steroids competitive race to the bottom have been on public education.
There are other examples of corrupted or compromised unions working with 0bama.
Something about that last statement you made doesn’t seem precisely correct.
No, fair enough. But today it’s mostly that compromised and corrupted unions support the Democrats who give them nothing but grief in return, whereas in the past there was a modicum of give and take given the overall strength of organized labor.
I have to say that the Democrats embrace of school privatization policies like NCLB and Race to the Top is breathtaking. The extent to which Democrats have turned against public schools would have been unthinkable a generation ago. But it makes sense given that big investors on Wall Street are enthralled to the idea of making money in the ever-expanding education industry. Instead of investing in *new* industries, in manufacturing, in advanced technology, they’d rather strip mine the remaining assets of public infrastructure this country has. The American capitalist class is pathetic.
Strip mining the commons, the middle class, poor, children, everything
fixed it for ya. Murdoch Inc. has been scheming to infiltrate and subvert public education in the UK for years and only recently was forced to take a short pause while its vast criminal enterprises are reamed out. A key purpose for infiltrating Murdoch’s agent Coulson into the Tory party and then into Number 10 Downing Street (PM’s office), and for the numerous social encounters between Rebekah Brooks & Cameron’s Education minister was to ensure continued access to & control over Tory plans to privatize public schools.
ABC News claimed early this morning that preznit’s plan would include
Has anybody seen anything to confirm that?
Kabuki.
I’m sure — like the public option he “supported” for a year after he’d secretly negotiated it away — the fix is already in.
The Medicare and Social Security cuts have already been negotiated in a back room, but Obama will be doing a little dance to distract us until it’s time for the big reveal.
Also note that Obama will tolerate cuts to SocSec and Medicare/Medicaid if there are “some” revenue increases from millionaires.
Nice opening there, Barry. Big enough to drive a Mac truck through and to at least begin destroying SS/M/M.
And I’ll only believe what he says in campaign mode when I see his actual actions.
