When thousand of Egyptian protesters were taking to the streets in peaceful demonstrations the Obama administration’s message was clear: people have a “right to protest.” Vice President Joe Biden on PBS:
And the two things we have been saying here, Jim[Lehrer], is that violence isn’t appropriate and people have a right to protest. And so — and we think that — I hope Mubarak, President Mubarak, will — is going to respond to some of the legitimate concerns that are being raised.
From President Obama’ statement on Eqypt on January 28:
The people of Egypt have rights that are universal. That includes the right to peaceful assembly and association, the right to free speech, and the ability to determine their own destiny.
Yet, when American citizens actually get a permit and than tried to exercise their right to peacefully protest the Keystone XL oil pipeline on the public property in front of the White House, they get thrown in jail for two days on a BS misdemeanor charge that doesn’t even carry prison time.
It seems the Obama administration’s high minded principles on human rights in regard to right of people to peacefully protests are not nearly as important as to them as their desire to keep meddling kids (and older folks) off his lawn.
