With the debt ceiling deal now law, the next stage of using artificial crisis to force austerity onto the American people begins. This next time instead of members of Congress saying they must vote for big cuts to avoid default, they will be able to point to the newly created triggers in this deal as the justification for supporting the proposal from the Super Congress.
The triggers in the deal are meant to present the American people with a false choice, accept cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits or allow major cuts in soldiers’ pay and veterans’ care, diabolically creating an artificial situation that pit senior citizens against our military personal. That is why it is important to stress that triggers aren’t real. There is no need for them to be pulled.
One Congress can’t bind the actions of another Congress, especially when it is to implement highly unpopular policy. Our legislative system is basically full of triggers that never get pulled. There is the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, the Medicare SGR (Sustainable Growth Rate), the alternative minimum tax, extension of the Patriot act, etc… These are laws that are “triggered” to take effect or stop but Congress simply takes steps to prevent change from happening.
There is no reason that if the Super Congress’s package is rejected, Congress can’t also turn around and vote to prevent the triggers in the debt deal from going into effect. The same logic some are using to say the triggers are so unpopular they will do a good forcing a bipartisan deal applies equally to believing the triggers will never be allowed be pulled even if the Super Congress is rejected. If the cuts are unpopular with Congress and politically damaging, Congress will simply find a way to stop them from happening anyway. If you think right before the election President Obama would veto a bill that protects soldiers’ pay because he is committed to make this set of triggers real, you haven’t been paying attention.
Similarly, there is no reason to believe voting for the Super Congress’s bill will actually prevent the triggered cuts from happening. Republicans could easily allow the Super Congress bill to pass, and then right afterwards use a hostage situation to demand the cuts the trigger cuts be put in place anyway.
The groundwork is now laid to make cutting our social safety net easier by excuse of these triggers, the false choice already created so that those who oppose a bill that hurts seniors can be accused of not supporting our troops or national safety. Totally reject this false framing. There is nothing stopping Congress from rejecting the Super Congress’s austerity package and also voting to not allow these cuts to happen.

About FDL Action
Excellent points.
We are *always* being sold triggers and we know from experience the triggers NEVER get pulled. It would be astounding and more hypocrisy if these triggers were actually pulled.
The triggers are there for the talking points they support. It’s more lies.
We have to keep telling them this “deal” is not acceptable. Until they change it or until they are replaced by those who DO change it.
And, logic tells me, also, that *something* could be done about those damnable Bush tax cuts EVEN NOW. If they wanted to. Let’s make them want to.
Thanks, Jon.
Right! But if people are going to reject the “triggers,” then they have to be aware that there is no deficit reduction/debt problem. That very premise has to be rejected before it’s time for the triggers. The best way for that to happen is for the President to mint a $60 Trillion coin, and begin to pay off the national debt quickly, while using the credits generated by the coin to spend appropriations. The existence of the coin and the huge balance in the TGA, will remove the austerity/deficit reduction rationalization from politics. Constitutional Option Avoided; Constitutional Crisis Coming
A new beast has emerged called alternatively the ‘super committee’ or the ‘Super Congress.’ Under the deal struck between Obama and teabaggers, 12 legislators, six from each House and six from each party, will have to identify deep cuts in federal spending, which cuts must be ratified by each House of Congress and then signed into law by the President. If the 12 legislators fail to agree, then automatic cuts will be painfully endured in both the defense and civilian sectors.
There is nothing in the Constitution suggesting the propriety of such a system for lawmaking …

Constitutional Option Avoided; Constitutional Crisis Coming
We are witnessing the end of democracy with this super congress abomination. And like all of the ‘Shock Doctrine’ false crisis creations, it is designed to provide cover for the planned destruction of the working and middle classes.
We are in the midst of a fascist takeover. Tea Party shock troops are taking over the government. While progressives continue to believe we have some viable alternative in the Democratic party. We don’t. The takeover began on 9/11, the perfect excuse to rile up the propagandized, ignorant multitude into believing they had to give up their fundamental rights to be made ‘secure’. And to provide justification for a global, imperial war of conquest to gain and retain control of global markets and governments for corporations. Like Neville Chamberlain conceding the freedom of entire countries to Hitler, the Democrats keep giving in to this agenda and in fact most of them have bought into it with enthusiasm. This myth that most Americans are ‘center right’ is used to convince us that we have no supporters, that there is no left, and so politicians are justified when it comes to further and more pandering to the fascist agenda.
I was wondering when SOMEBODY would point that out. I agree. I made an A- in civics in high school and watched every episode of the “West Wing”, this is unconstitutional. “Automatic triggers” are just “automatic laws”. NOthing like that in “Schoolhouse Rock”.
