Call your member of Congress and ask if they will vote for a Super Congress to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits
UPDATE: Paul Krugman says to vote “no.” You can tell that to your member of Congress when you call.
Steny Hoyer says he’s only got 68 “yes” votes for the Super Congress so far. The Senate is a lost cause — 70 plus have committed to vote “yes, per ABC News.
Who has taken a position:
Connie Mack – Tea Party-friendly Congressman was on Morning Joe and said he would not vote for the bill. Why does the myth persist that the Tea Party is demanding this? They’re whipping against.
Barney Frank — told me the other day he would not vote for a Super Congress. Today he makes fun of Connie Mack for refusing to vote for it, and that he now supports it. Says he doesn’t know if he’ll be on the Super Congress, but it may be a way to get out of Afghanistan. Who is he kidding? 202-225-5931
Emanuel Cleaver - Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus says that the deal appears to be “a sugar-coated Satan sandwich.” Does that mean he won’t vote for it? 202-225-4535
Kurt Schrader (OR) – will vote yes. “While we’re a very diverse Caucus, at the end of the day, we’re not going to put our ideology ahead of the good of the country.” 202-225-5711
Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (FL) – will vote yes. 202-225-7931
Raul Grijalva - Says he will vote “no.” Since they probably don’t need his vote to get what they need anyway, maybe this time he means it. 202-225-2435
Gwen Moore (D-WI) – “Staff doesn’t know how she will vote.” 202-225-4572
John Duncan (R-TN) – “staffer listened politely but did not know how he was going to vote on the Super Congress business. Claimed he was reading the bill.”
Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) – “Staff person who answered phone was almost apologetic when she told me that the Senator told MPR this morning that she was a yes vote. Minnesota will be looking for a new candidate.” 202-224-3244
Kathy Castor (D-FL) – “called my Rep, Kathy Castor and suggested that if she really wanted to be re-elected, she might want to vote against this piece of crap. I pointed out that if the “Super” Congress stuff goes through, then there’s apparently no need for regular members of Congress so what would we be paying them to do? The person taking the info was non-committal and said he would pass it on to the Representative.” 202-225-3376
Diane DeGette (D-CO) – “She and her staff are oblivious to what they have done.” 202-225-4431
Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) – “It’s under review and call back later for a response.” 202-225-6335

Reuters reporting that the House will vote first. No link and doesn’t provide a time for either vote.
DeGette’s office wouldn’t commit to an Aye or Nay. Grrr.
If he actually votes no, then that’s exactly what it means. If Grijalva votes no that means they have the votes to pass the neoliberal legislation. QED.
a rather nasty hit Wasserman-Schultz will take for the team considering the high demo of seniors in her district

We’re about to discover how much sway leftwing writers have over Congressional Democrats (spoiler: none)
‘Fraid so.
Anyone else holding out hope that the corpse of the New Deal may be reanimated after the double dip comes?
Kabuki Theater Count #1: at last a script emerges.
http://my.firedoglake.com/cassiodorus/2011/08/01/progressives-democrats-and-eternal-optimism/
that alone is worth another 5 calls – thx !
SC-Clyburn’s office did not know how he would vote. I sent message to him that voting for a Super Congress was Treason!
Today’s vote, will determined whether Progressives are voting the wants and desires of their respective “constituencies.” On the other hand, will the progressives be voting their Progressive “credentials.”
Other than War-Making and appointments to the SCOTUS, ideology does not reign supreme among Democrats. And War-Making has been called into question, given the Democrats penchant for Iraq and Aghanistan.
Of course, from my perspective, and that being I am a “racial and ethnic” and thusly, engaged in the Democratic Coalition, and given that LBJ’s Great Society is my “gold standard” not much has been forthcoming from the dominant partner of this coalition, and further, being “critical” of all Democratic leaders is my normal fare.
Consequently, is Barney Frank voting his “constituency” or his Progressive “credentials.”? And from therein, is the sizable difference. And should he vote is “constituency” does that make him no longer a “progressive”? A new “litmus test” perhaps?
Jaango
BTW, it would be worth your while to take a look at dKos. I am not kidding. Front page, diaries, most of them flaming. Could this be the end of the Obots? (Except for Cole, of course.)
Woolsey hasn’t committed one way or the other. *shocking* (This is the former *CoChair* of the CPC. Can’t. Commit.)
Things are moving so quickly I’m having a hard time keeping up, and I thought I had been paying attention.
Would someone kindly and briefly explain the “Super Congress” to me?
Called Stab-me-now: Wouldn’t commit either way.
Called Levin: They said he is probably a no (good cop/bad cop bs from our senators).
Called Dingell: He is still “listening to people calling”.
I reminded each of them that the Tea Party became a force in Congress by taking out RINOs. I told them that Progressives will do the same and start taking out DINOs.
I told them that any Democrat who votes for this is dead to me and that the party would be dead to me. I also said I was sick of getting non-committal answers when I called, and that they always ended up selling me out.
I cannot stand Stabenow. My wife had the misfortune of meeting her. What a true waste of oxygen, she wouldn’t know a principled stand if it was given to her in a hand written note. Only big money donors count.
Grrr….
Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (FL) – will vote yes. 202-225-7931
I am sure the seniors in FLA would like know of Debbie’s vote
Oops, never mind, it’s explained in previous posts.
have been monitoring that situation for weeks. and again, it isn’t the blacwaterdog diary groupies, it’s the fiercely pragmatic, party loyalists, the we’ll fix it later! crowd
would love to see poll numbers on weds morning – they are sinking like stones
whore…when ya call her…ask what her good pal Gabby Giffords would do for SENIOR CARE
Called Rush Holt’s office and urged him to vote against the bill to force Obama’s hand. I was told that they have been getting a lot of similar calls. No decision so far on how he’ll vote, I think (I always forget to ask that, but I think the staffer would have said if he had committed).
Wrote my Congress critter, except that when I wrote last week, he never responded. My text, herewith:
Well, you didn’t read or respond to this request, so now I have to ask you if you would like another term in the House, or if you’d prefer to join the growing ranks of the unemployed. It may be only through that path that you and your colleagues understand the damage that you’re doing with this program.
It’s completely ridiculous to insist on cutting these programs and to do so in a complete vacuum. There’s nothing in here for the least of us and everything in here for the top 1%.
This isn’t the program the President told the American people to support. It was supposed to be a mix and it’s nothing close.
I promise you, I will demand the Democratic party primary you next Spring; should you win, I will vote for whomever opposes you. It’s that plain and simple. This plan cannot go through.
and I kep forgetting she is DNC Chair – first woman, right ? and she’s going down with the USS Pragmatic
ew…he got testy when i brought up Giffords name
They’ll vote. It’ll pass and will be hailed as a triumph of “reason” and “bipartisanship.” Another fait accompli of the Weimar/Duma Congress and the fascists they represent. Petitioning an unresponsive and corrupt government is a fools errand.
Well why don’t you join us fools and dial 10 digits to harangue a congress critter?
call call call bring up Giffords
mebbe they can find their souls
US Constitution-Article 1:
People! This Super Congress IS TREASON!
It’s fast becoming true that all Democrats in DC, with few exceptions worth mentioning, are utterly worthless, corporate-owned, pieces of shit. Jane is right that all members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus need to experience unemployment firsthand by the next cycle, but so do all the other DINO’s. At this point I don’t see any reason for The Democratic Party to even exist, as they’ve never missed an opportunity to betray the principles they claim to stand for.
The middle and working classes need to organize and find other options, and the sooner the better.
This is crazy that I need to call the office of the former co-Chair of the CPC is a deep, deep blue district and even *she* will not commit to representing the most basic progressive principles by voting NO.
This fool is going down fighting…
I sent emails this morning to Senators Pat Toomey and Bob Casey… from PA.
Krugman says to vote “no”: http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/01/if-i-were-in-the-house
I see this as the breaking point. We cannot allow a Super Congress to rule over us. It simply CANNOT BE DONE!
spoke to castors aid…told him us critters in the senior communiy have hundreds that would vote against her
he started to stammer
mentionan organized effort…they get nervous
I’ll gladly call my Congress critters as I have done countless times in the past. If anything it’s a real world example of the myth of Sisyphus. After going through what I think all recognize as a fruitless exercise it’s time to look at options that in the long run may be more effective in bringing down an unresponsive political system that represents economic interest that favor the few at the expense of the many.
My House member is a Republican who has not decided his vote yet because he is still reading. Morgan Griffith, Va. I did share that I wanted him to vote no.
you do recall that it was Giffords (at Rahm;s urging) who ran a de facto attack ad on Grijalva ? – they know damn good and well how Giffords would vote
And I just got a response to this e-mail:
Congressman Christopher Murphy
The recipient’s mailbox is full and can’t accept messages now. Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this message for you. Please try resending this message later, or contact the recipient directly.
Way to ensure that I vote for anyone else next year. Anyone.
How does this effect gay Americans? I am so scared. I told my boy friend that we should think about moving to Sweeden.
If a mechanism is set up to tally a Vote of No Confidence in the Obama Administration, I have a feeling if huge numbers result this would get both his and the media’s attention.
One of my great disappoints has been seeing woman not take the chance to make a difference; I really thought that would be the promise and outcome of the Women’s movement….I am wrong so often….
K: How are you doing? We have missed you…
Change you can believe in
yea but now she needs US GOVERNMENT HEALTHCARE
she might see it differently
DWS will basically do whatever Obama tells her to given her position. If DWS took a different position than Obama, I would think it would only be because Obama was resigning.
If you stray from the Daily Kos/Red State gulag blogs, the Super Congress has more libertarian types starting the froth at the mouth. The more paranoid are already packing for the FEMA death camps.
The whole thing is going to bite a lot of DC in the ass.

What the HELL are they smoking and on what planet??
Nice to see a fellow Michigander with my same feelings about the voted-for-the-bankruptcy-bill Stabenow…
i thought most of them were busy being enraged over the UN small arms treaty…which is of course, an international plot hatched at the UN to “grab guns”..hilary clinton spoke some canned, boiler plate platitudes in support of it so you know shes working hand in glove with the international cabal of gun-hatin -communist-socialist-gay-women-muslims, and OF COURSE, this is priority class 1 RED ALERT time for the patriot clique
Is she one we can/should go after?
From an Email from “The PEN”:
Seems to my reading the President already has the authority to raise the debt and payy all Bills already passed by the Congress!!! Please sign the petetion!!
This as has been said over and over is all a made up crises to give the American People a dose of the “SHOCK DOCTRINE” for the benefit of the rich… Lock and Load folks all hell is going to break out when they cut all the social safety nets including Social Security that you have paid into (at much higher % than the rich) all your life. Only to have it all snatched away from you!!! There WILL be death in the streets after this…
When you call your congressperson, remind them that there is NO actual possibility of default because of the Public Debt Law of 1941 31 USC 3102. It is a later law than the debt ceiling law (WWI vintage), and thus takes precedence. The law gives the president the power to ask the Treasury Sec. to cover all “expenditures authorized by law…,” i.e. appropriations bills that have passed. According to this law it is the president’s duty to ensure that the government doesn’t default on its lawful commitments. So it will be Obama’s *duty* on Aug. 2 to ask Geithner to start paying all commitments, not just selected ones. So talk about a default is complete BS — typical scare tactics. Take a look and sign the petition:

Just had a nice talk with a young man in the Congresswoman’s office, even after I explained that I was not a constituent. He tried to explain to me that this bill does not “cut” Social Security and Medicare. I explained to him about the “Super Congress,” and the “chained CPI” and that it most certainly will. I also explained that I would be donating to a primary of the Congresswoman if she voted “yes.” At that point he claimed that he wasn’t sure how the Congresswoman would vote. I doubt that, but the conversation was very civil.
Thanks! By chance I just mentioned the same law. This law is very important. FDL needs an article about it soon! It’s even safer than the 14th Amendment.
Great catch.
Just got email from the Pres; it includes his video b/c he wants to
speak directly to me….As they say, I was born at night, but not last night. If he wants to speak, he would not send such canned reply letters.
Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) is slime, he’ll vote for it. My Congressman at work.
Thanks.
Wish they would have at least sat this one out.
That makes him so like McCaul…very sorry to hear.
boy this press briefing with Jay Carney is soooo enlightening.
Isn’t it about 20 minutes from the vote now?
Is everyone telling Congress the Super 12 is Treasonous and they will be outed for voting?
Anybody get an email from MoveOn telling them to call people and oppose this?
Wow
it’s an incredibly passive endorsement – just that one page
but it sure sounds like they’re saying We’re In to the DNC to me
Micah Sifry sends a message indicating he called his representative, Rep. Nita Lowey. His tweet indicates the office is getting mostly calls urging her (mod-lib Dem, Westchester NY) to vote against the deal.
Petition signed.
I just called Stabenow’s office as well and got the usual Congressional non-committal song and dance shuffle. Now way in hell will I vote for her again.
That’s CAP not the AFL.
Whew.
31 USC 3102 – Sec. 3102. Bonds
Agree.
Got one doing a survey – should MoveOn support or oppose.. WTF?
Nope. SEIU hasn’t sent out anything either.
Can’t this be stopped in the Senate if just ONE senator filibusters?
“Can you let us know what you think? Should MoveOn support the deal to raise the debt ceiling?
Just got this from MoveOn
Jane, the email I got (11:59 EDT) from MoveOn said to tell them whether you are in favor of or oppose the deal:
–
Jim Gerlach’s office said he hasn’t decided yet. 202.225.4315
thank you, WHEW, indeed !
Nothing from MoveOn but did get one from CREDO Action urging opposition to the “deal.”
Trumka’s a neoliberal piece of shit. Always has been. Union so-called leadership blows dead goats.
No.
I see that and you are right on!!
Mike Doyle’s (PA-14) staffer didn’t know how he was going to vote. When I asked which way Doyle was leaning, he clicked into stump speech mode. ‘The Congressman is upset that there isn’t more shared sacrifice, etc, etc’
This from Doyle’s website:
No shit. But does that mean he’s gonna cave?

Yep, thanks for the notice.
Elijah Cummings’ office didn’t have a position. I vowed to never support him or any candidate he backs if he votes for this screwjob.
Great BR great fill their faxes up… Smother them in negative responses!!
MoveOn link. Vote No.
And something “roots” that linked and sent messages to the 2 Sen & Rep.
How many kittens didja send me? *g*
Just got the MoveOn email. Voted against supporting the deal.
They suggested I call Rep. Fortenberry (Repub.), which I’ve already done.
Seriously??!!
I just asked MoveOn if they were doing an email to their members to make calls and oppose. They answered, unequivocally, “yes.”
They’re voting on the bill tonight. What’s their time frame for getting a response here?
Wow, how insipid.
They are unable to take a stand for the vulnerable members of our society?
CALL DOYLE
i think he wants to do the right thing
Steve Cohen should not be on the fence about this.
His district, TN-9/inner-city Memphis voted 82% for Obama and is a D+26 democratic district. It is also a relatively poor inner city district and his constituents will be greatly hurt by this.
Looks like the email they sent out asking if they should support or oppose the warz in 2003.
I just called my rep Jim Gerlach–a Republican, and was told that the bill came in late last night and he was reviewing it and when he made a decision he’d post it on his website.
I told them I opposed it and urged him to vote no–which means a whole lot of nothing. But whatcha gonna do?
hahaahaha dear boy
But the RootsAction team has another petition to send yer congress critters:
Has each of your kitties written their letters in support of a NO vote…fortified with backear?
I’ve tried his office but just get voicemail. I’ve left a message.
I moved on from MoveOn a long time ago.
I think it was when they decided to endorse Obama after asking a minority of their members what they wanted to do. MoveOn democracy in action.
Gary Peters (MI) is “still reviewing the bill” and doesn’t know how he will vote. I told them that if he votes for this bill (that includes the treasonous Super Congress which got a snide snicker from the aide), it will be result in me voting against him. He did not snicker at that.
Ask your congress critter who the hell is Jeffrey Immelt?
Who is Jeffrey Immelt? He is the Head of Barack Obama highly touted “Jobs Council”
“Immelt took over in 2001, GE has shed 34,000 jobs in the U.S., according to its most recent annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. But it’s added 25,000 jobs overseas.”

Jeffrey Immelt company pays no USA taxes
Jeffrey Immelt loves Chinese workers more than USA workers
Jeffrey Immelt company also owns part of that so call Liberal news network MSNBC
Ed needs to tell his boss Jeffrey to stop sending USA jobs to China
“Is old ED a comedian, Ed Boss must laugh Ed’s new commercial, about how we need to keep USA Jobs”
Yes! Jeffrey Immelt will probably be at OBAMA birthday party!
Grand Ma use to say, people can tell a lot about you by looking at your friends.
Does anyone still think OBAMA has 1 good bone in his body? Anyone?
The real Devil here is not the Tea Party? Yes! It is OBAMA
The USA has a JOB CRISIS, and OBAMA picks a guy who loves sending Jobs to CHina, to be his Job Point Person.
Obama may be from Kenya, because he hates the USA!
In war, one must know they enemy!
In the middle of biggest JOB CRISIS in USA history, OBAMA has a guy who loves sending Jobs to China, as his Job spoke person
How Evil is OBAMA?
The Devil in the White House, makes the tea party, look like a youth football team.
Jeffrey Immelt hates the USA
everybody i called is TERRIFIED O0F ORGANIZING
i said we are doing utube adds
they all asked
who is doing the organizing
i said THOUSANDS of concerned peeps
Ptah ought to pay someone a personal visit!
call back..tell them
BY THE WAY…WE ARE ORGANIZING!!
Called both my congressmen’s D.C. office.
DeFazio: “No idea” how he’ll vote. Which suggests to me that he’ll vote for it, or maybe wait until his vote doesn’t matter and then vote “no.” In other words, I’m not optimistic about DeFazio.
Blumenauer: His staffer said Earl was “reluctant” to vote for it. Said Earl was unhappy about the entire process. Used the term “hostage-taking.” Unfortunately, Earl has made semi-recent comments to The Oregonian about the “need to cut entitlements” and mentioned Social Security. So I’m not optimistic about him, either.
I did not mention the SuperCongress specifically. Just the debt deal as a whole.
Yep, fortified with the threat of sending fresh used litter to those who vote Aye.
By the way—I saw a video of Barney Frank on Morning Joe and he seemed really happy that we’d be pitting military spending against domestic spending. He believes this will force us out of Iraq when we have to make choice between guns and bridges here in America.
Uh-huh.
He was reaaaaallly Mr. Optimisim.

tell em your organizing ANGRY SENIORS
They lost me when they had to use a survey to support or oppose the warz.
P.S.
I mentioned Krugman to Earl Blumenauer’s staff guy. He had read it, too.
Yep I copied and pasted. I don’t know the answer to your question about timeframe but it does seem there is a lack of urgency. Here’s the rest of the MoveOn email (with link targets omitted):
I agree. The gang of 13 ought to make a visit to their critter’s office…carrying freshly produced box fillings to leave behind.
“tell em your organizing ANGRY SENIORS”
That is a WINNER! Will do!
HuffPo’s jbendery just tweeted that Waxman is on the fence.

Yes, some DKos diarists and commentors have been on Obama’s ass for quite a while, it just continues to build.
I like this quote from a frontpaged diary in reference to Obama:
“And now this odious piece of excrement.”
Hard to see how the DKos mission statement–”to elect more and better democrats”–can still be considered a useful business model.
Guess it’s in a death spiral.

So has House leadership thought about cutting off internet access to the Capitol for the next 10 hours?
I called my rep-for-the-moment David Wu (OR). The staffer said he did not indicate how he would vote, but that she would relay any message. I acknowledged his “last vote” and his problems, and asked him to exit gracefully by voting this deal down, since it would cause great hardship for me and millions of other people.
I also went to his office in Portland personally on the Day of Action about 12 days ago, right before his scandal broke, and delivered a letter to a staffer there.
Under the circumstances, I can’t help feeling locals here have about .000001% leverage with Wu, even less than the .000003% we have with any member of Congress. I’m probably overestimating.
tell em
they will GO DOWN for this
55 million screaming mad seniors WILL FIRE THEM
Again from a tweet from the HuffPo’s jbendery, the Black Caucus is split. Jesse Jackson will vote “no.” Chaka Fattah is a “yes.”
The Old Gray Panthers + at work..sounds good
Chicago Tribune reporting as Breaking News (http://tinyurl.com/3t9g38y) that Joe Walsh and Jesse Jackson Jr. intend to vote against the latest debt ceiling deal.
Jackson gets it right regarding the Super Congress:
This indicates to me that calling to oppose the “Super Congress” is a mistake, because it misses the point of what we’re all purportedly opposing. It tells Congress that we’re all up in arms about some procedural trickery rather than about the unnecessary cuts.
I called Merkley, Wyden, and Wu’s offices to tell them, “The President has the legal authority to circumvent the debt-ceiling. Oppose this terrible and unnecessary austerity deal, and force the President to take action on his own.”
This is also completely inconsistent with other issues FDL has tackled where the position was basically, “Nobody gives a shit about Congressional procedural rules.” Raising hell about the “Super Congress” rather than specifically the issues the “Super Congress” is set to address only tells them that we do actually care about arcane procedural rules.
hahahahhahahahahahahaha
tell em they better shut off their phones too

Sorry. This isn’t just procedural trickery but obviates the point of Congress as per the Constitution. They actually do know exactly what they are doing (it’s both parties in both bodies).
powwow blows the whistle on Congressional shenanigans (especially note the fake quorum call)

I found that out a long time ago. Depressing isn’t it.
Yes, a short while ago
What the hell are they afraid of??? That doesn’t make any sense!!!
the TRUTH
people telling the truth that SS doesnt add one dime to the debt, and has a
$22 trillion Social Security surplus revealed on C-SPAN
When Peter Coy, the Bloomberg Businessweek Economics Editor, appeared this morning on “Washington Journal,” he brought along a chart for his discussion of the magazine’s cover article, “Why the Debt Crisis is Even Worse Than You Think.” But, the chart, purported to show a national fiscal gap, did not match Coy’s talking points. As Coy concluded commenting that cuts would be needed to Social Security and other entitlements, C-SPAN moderator Susan Swain pointed out that Coy’s chart showed a long-term surplus for Social Security of $22 trillion. Coy confirmed as accurate her interpretation of the chart and, after some stumbling, admitted that, “The trust fund is not the crucial issue.” Indeed, his own figures show that it is not an issue at all. So, why did he continue to insist that Social Security cuts are needed?
To watch the interview, go to the video and fast-forward to the 28 minute mark. Discussion of the Social Security surplus occurs around the 30 minutes mark.
Following is my transcript of the interview. (Note: I’ve highlighted in bold the discussion of the Social Security surplus.)
In the middle of this afternoon, I called Rep. Van Hollen’s Capitol Hill office and asked to speak to a staffer regarding budget, Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid. The receptionist went to find someone, then came back and said he was asked to take my message. After explaining my position, I asked Rep. Van Hollen’s plans on tonight’s vote creating a Super Congress. The receptionist explained that the Representative does not want to balance the budget on the backs of the weakest in our society. I said, yes, but how does he plan to vote tonight? The reply was that Van Hollen had not decided yet.
