Catfood Commission II: A Cowardly Attempt to Dodge Democratic Accountability |
| By: Jon Walker Monday July 18, 2011 1:42 pm |
It currently appears that the most likely resolution to the debt ceiling situation will be the use of the Mitch McConnell-Harry Reid back up plan. This plan will probably include some form of the Catfood Commission II. A bipartisan commission that would work in secret to come up with a package that would be fast [...]
Over 2000 People Will Say No Cuts to Social Security or Medicare Benefits at Congressional Offices Across the Country. Will You? |
| By: Jane Hamsher Monday July 18, 2011 9:31 am |
Someone should tell the President that if he wants to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits before defense spending, he’s not in any position to be giving advice to progressives.
Moody’s is Right About Eliminating the Debt Ceiling |
| By: Jon Walker Monday July 18, 2011 7:26 am |
If the Republicans were really worried about protecting the private sector from dangerous and unnecessary government uncertainty, they would vote to eliminate this foolish debt ceiling limit altogether.
Obama to Eliminate Elizabeth Warren as Head of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau |
| By: Jane Hamsher Saturday July 16, 2011 8:41 am |
The bright side (if there is a bright side) is that Warren will be able to speak more freely if she’s not the head of the agency, and we could use some adults in the conversation right now. A giant manufactured debt ceiling crisis is being used to force Shock Doctrine austerity on the country. I hope somebody will ask her how she’d handle things if she was President. What do you think Elizabeth Warren would do about the debt ceiling showdown if she was in Obama’s shoes right now?

In all the “serious” talk about the deficit, the Social Security Trust Fund and long term budget projections a key point that is always overlooked is that the number of American citizens is a variable that can be changed dramatically by our government’s policies choices. Writers, politicians and pundits often point the demographic projection to [...]
Obama: Cut Spending to Spend More |
| By: Jon Walker Friday July 15, 2011 1:25 pm |
I’ve been trying very hard to understand President Obama’s reason why progressives should support his push for a truly big austerity package that contains both Medicare and Social Security benefits cuts, but as far as I can tell it is just illogical gibberish. His reasoning he gave in the press conference was: And so that’s [...]
We Must Act Now to Save Social Security and Medicare |
| By: Jane Hamsher Friday July 15, 2011 12:28 pm |
Florida is a key swing state in the 2012 presidential election, and Obama is already struggling there. It also has the highest percentage of senior citizens of any state in the union. Can you chip in $10 to help us run these online ads targeted to seniors and future retirees? With your help, we can spread our pledge not to vote for anyone participating in benefit cuts, including President Obama.
Raising Medicare Age is Restructuring Medicare Into a Voucher Program |
| By: Jon Walker Friday July 15, 2011 9:25 am |
Obama’s plan to raise the Medicare retirement age is functionally the equivalent of voucherizing Medicare for many seniors age 65 and 66. It is just like the Paul Ryan plan, but in a small increment for now. It would radically restructure Medicare as we know for millions of new retirees, and more importantly set the precedent for how to slowly voucherizing all Medicare using a series of small retirement age increases.

It’s hard keeping up with the pace of the debt ceiling news, so if you see anything, put it in the comments and I’ll add it:
