In an op-ed for the New Hampshire Union Leader, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney attacked President Obama for a “peacetime spending binge,” as pointed out by Greg Sargent. From the Op-ed:
Barack Obama is facing a financial emergency on a grander scale. Yet his approach has been to engage in one of the biggest peacetime spending binges in American history. With its failed stimulus package, its grandiose new social programs, its fervor for more taxes and government regulations, and its hostility toward business, the administration has made the debt problem worse, hindered economic recovery and needlessly cost American workers countless jobs.
This is a frightening level disconnection from reality from the guy that is supposed to be the most sensible of the Republican candidates.
What I find even more troubling than Romney’s incredible ignorance is that this remark wasn’t some offhanded comment at a town hall, but was in a clearly planned op-ed directed at likely Republican primary voters.
If I know campaigns, there was likely at least a half-dozen campaign aides and advisers that reviewed the op-ed to offer suggestions or, at the very least, proof read it before it was submitted. So, this means none of these people in the Romney camp, or even a member of the editorial staff at the Union Leader, thought to say, “Hey Mitt, I don’t know if you want to use the phrase ‘peacetime’ given that we are still fighting two wars and a kinetic military action in Libya.”
The fact that such a mistake was even possible for the campaign of a presidential primary frontrunner shows how totally desensitized the nation has become to war after a decade of continuous conflict. Among the political class, endless war has become accepted as the new normal.
War is peace. Or at least we have been fighting wars so removed from most of our daily lives for so long we can barely remember there actually is a difference.

About FDL Action
My guess is Trump’s going to be the GOP nominee.
There is no enthusiasm for Romney outside the beltway.
Hey the Republicans have Everything bassakwards!!
I can’t even visualize whirled peas anymore……….
Heh! You think he just admitted to occupations? Looks like it to me.
We have been fighting wars? Who’s “we,” kimosabe?
We’ve hired some guys to do some stuff, which we’re not paying for, but I’m not sure where it is or how it affects me. Or us. Obama says he has to do it.
The point is that Romney is not that far off. The nation is not “at war,” the government is, and we have little control of what the government does. As Bush advised, let the government handle it and the rest of you go shopping.
At first I thought Romney meant “non-military spending”, but then his campaign came out with some flim-flam about the post-WW2 period.
It tells us something about his campaign staff (you don’t actually think he wrote this thing himself, do you?), but at least as much about his intended audience.
They’ve decided they are going to run against “spending”, blame all the evils of the world on “spending”, and they will just string it together in non-sentences with other words that have negative connotations.
Poor Mittens. No matter how hard he tries to tea bag the Tea Baggers,
to them he’ll always be the inventor of ObamaCare.
Mitt finally figured out he was boring so now he wants attention to bad he is not going anywhere near crazy enough to get the GOP’s Tea Bagger base’s attention. Either Mitt ups the Crazy more or he might as well go home now. Will can he up the Crazy is the question.
even if he didn’t write it, it is likely he at least read it to approve it along with probably several other people. That is what makes it so weird.
The Corporate Wing of the GOP now must
RallyBeg Trump to be their Champion. I think we are seeing the end of Mitt’s run for the Presidency.I don’t think Trump can win the nomination but he can side swipe every other Corporate GOPer. That leaves the Fundies.
Perhaps the Republican presidential candidates have already been “informed” that Barack Obama has by far more useful to Republicans than any “registered Republican”. So, now the “competition” is just having fun and can look as stupid as they want.
If you don’t have ideas attack the other person’s ideas. The Ryan budget is unpopular, the GOP’s attacks on Unions in Wisconsin, Child Labor laws in Maine, cutting pensions is very unpopular so Mitt is reduced to screaming hate.
Valid theory
Maybe his dog wrote it.
Things can be confusing from the roof of a station wagon.
Or, one of the many Little Willards, perhaps? After all, they are doing their peacetime duty working to elect their Dad president!
Romney = Obama – Melanin
The wingnuts like Trump, surprisingly, even if their leaders don’t. And low information voters really like him. If he can avoid foot-in-mouth disease–a big if–it’s Reagan redux. Let’s just hope it’s Reagan ’76 and not Reagan ’80.
Athenae is upstairs!
Late Night: Moving Edition
When the prez or a member of Congress uses the word “America” in context with the wars the govt is thereby acting “In Our Name.” Remember the earliest anti-war protests? “Not In Our Name.” It’s still relevant.
It does affect us. Taxpayers are paying for the wars, now and forever more, it would seem. If we don’t have loved ones killed, maimed or seriously wounded, there’s a family not far from us who does.
Most of all it affects thousands of our young men and women, up close and personal. Nobody survives unscathed. They’re more than “We’ve hired some guys to do some stuff.” Much more. Don’t let the actions of a few smear the names of the many.
It’s not like you can really blame him. He has 5 fighting age sons, who were doing their patriotic duty by trying to get him elected in 2008. If there were wars going on wouldn’t they’ve been in uniform?
Doesn’t want the precious dears to venture into harm’s way.
Sorry, Jon, but if the US is not engaged in any declared wars, then it is peacetime. Lucky for you that there is an ongoing war on drugs and a war on terror. Was there any outcome on the war on poverty? Did we lose?
Fortunately for Romney, Paris Hilton will not be old enough to run till 2016. Then the Republican nomination will be hers for the taking. Republican primary voters like name recognition and the only TV star who might be in the race this year (though I think it is just a self-promotional ruse) is The Donald.
It’s not that he created the ReidCare template, it’s that he’s Mormon. Republicans are bigots. Mormonism is considered a cult to these bigots. If he were a “normal” Christian there is no way they select John McCain in 2008.
It’s all of the above. Romney doesn’t have any natural constituency except for Republican party elite, and there’s deep dissatisfaction with elites going into 2012.
I am sure if we were @ War it would have been covered on the Nightly News I watched a while back!
Hope you are not talking about that fictitious war against Al-Qaeda, the brain child of the CIA. Kind of proves the point that if you repeat a lie enough, it soon becomes truth.
Romney is an idiot.
He’s also a privateer who has put thousands of Americans out of work after buying their companies and ‘right-sizing’ them. We saw how well that worked for Carly Fiorina in California in 2010.
VERY interesting conjecture!
Nice thought . . . I’d like to see this one fleshed out with some details n such, but at face value I’d buy into it.
Well done.
As a campaigner, Obama is much, MUCH slicker.
What matters is how many of the fundies like him. He’s a Noo Yawker, like Rudy Ghouliani. If he’s the nominee and they stay home and pray or hit each other with their bibles, PBO wins in a walk.
The fundies have to decide if they’d rather have The Donald or four more years of Obama. Trump is the only candidate that has strong appeal to swing voters. He has a 35% favorable rating while 60% don’t think he’ll actually run. If he announces that’ll go way up. By comparison Romney has a 42% favorable rating and history suggests that’s his peak.
Why doesn’t he just point out that Obama is a liar, a murderer, a torturer and a traitor to the constitution?
Hey working class, you forgot nazi, muslim, Kenyan, socialist, communist, abortionist, child indoctrinator. Can’t think straight without your pointy hat on? Fox and Rush Pills got you all confused?
Because that would be true and telling the truth gets you nowhere in politics, something even the witless Mitt understands.
Or, alteratively, because Mitt intends to lie, murder, torture and betray the constitution, too.
All Romney is “proving” in the babble that eminated from his mouth is that it simply doesn’t matter anymore what politicians/pundits/entertainers/”journalists”/”reporters”/tv anchor folks, etc etc SAY, especially if it’s to likely Republican/Tea Party voters.
Really the lies are so thick & deep anymore that it’s only surprising (think about it) when someone actually tells the truth or stays in reality rather than spinning fairy tales.
To me, this babble from Romney is just business as usual. I assume that Romney’s speech writers figured that this is what T-GOPers wanted to hear, so why not have Romney say it?? Indeed, why not? Do ya think the T-GOPers are gonna *question it*? Do ya think the T-GOPers ever want to hear about reality?? Not on your life. They live in never-never land. Clap louder for Tinkerbell!!!
Romney is correct. This is “peacetime.” Look around. Go outside. Go shopping. What war? For most US citizens, the perpetual wars only exist on TV, which makes them every bit as real as “Glee.” Hence the rational conclusion by Team Romney: this is “peacetime.”
Although Romney’s comment about Obama’s “hostility toward business” was hilarious.
Wars are background noise nowadays, eh?
Except for those damaged by them….
If I were the oligarchs’ strategist, I’d be sitting extremely happy now. Obama is clearly the oligarch’s choice: moderate Republican policies worst-case (left-most case), always on the defensive, marching to an agenda framed and dictated by the right. That the Republicans don’t win the WH doesn’t matter much; in fact, it serves the purpose of keeping the left in check. As a corporatist oligarch I’d be eating popcorn watching the entertainment that is the Republican party, coming up with new lunacy every day to pander to the bat-shit crazy 30% that is their base. The only thing that would make me sit up and take notice would be a candidate to the left of Obama that had grass roots support, or enough progressives marching in the streets to entice some suit to fill that role.
Oceania is at peace.
Charlie Sheen’s old enough, and he’s displayed the proper credentials.
Makes me think of Pat Boone covering Tutti Frutti.
