Too Big to Jail: America’s Theft Inflection Point

By: Jon Walker Thursday March 17, 2011 7:33 am

This article in the Huffington Post about how Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is pushing the state attorneys general to quickly as possible “bring to bed” their investigations of the wide-scale systematic violations of law by the nation’s largest financial institutions is a great reminder that, in America, there is a very important theft-to-punishment inflection point [...]

By: Jon Walker Wednesday March 16, 2011 3:53 pm

Overwhelmingly, the American people think the war in Afghanistan is not worth fighting, and 73 percent of the country wants us to withdraw substantial numbers of troops soon. Yet a majority of Americans, 53 percent, doubt President Obama and Congress will listen to the electorate about the war. From ABC News: Indeed, with Gen. David [...]

Nuclear Power’s Existence Dependent on Multiple Forms of Corporate Welfare

By: Jon Walker Wednesday March 16, 2011 3:15 pm

While there is rarely a large sector in our economy that doesn’t tend to get some form of corporate welfare, nuclear power is unique in that it benefits from almost every scheme ever designed by the government to directly or indirectly subsidize an industry. Nuclear power receives direct subsidies, loan guarantees, special tax breaks, government [...]

Dot-Com Conflict-of-Interest Poster Girl Mary Meeker Warns America: Think of the Children and Cut Social Security!

By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday March 16, 2011 8:18 am

This is great. Mary Meeker has a report out called USA Inc, telling us all why Social Security benefits should be cut for the good of America.  ”By 2037, cumulative deficits from Social Security could add another $11.6 trillion to the public debt,” warns the cautious and prudent-sounding Meeker.

I’ll leave it to the wonks to rip apart her latest bag o’ bullshit and her hallmark brand of fact-stuffing, but in case anyone has forgotten about the role Meeker played in  the dot-com boom, let me remind you.

Monopoly with No Price Controls Leads to 15,000% Markup on Drug for High-Risk Mothers

By: Jon Walker Monday March 14, 2011 5:00 pm

I’ve found the absolute best way to make incredible profits is to first convince the government to grant you a monopoly (in this case through the patent system) for an essential service, and then fight to make sure the government never puts in place any form of price control over your product. The story of [...]

Over the passed few years, the price of common brand name prescription drugs have experienced an incredible level of inflation significantly higher than both regular inflation and even medical inflation, according to the Government Accountability Office. Yet, at the same time, the cost of common generic drugs has fallen. Here we have another great reminder [...]

Health Care Reform: A Well-Documented, Fully Acknowledged Corporate Sellout

By: Jon Walker Monday March 14, 2011 10:19 am

There are many legitimate diverging opinions about the quality of the new health care reform law, what shouldn’t be in dispute is the well-documented fact that it was a corporate sellout, or at least contained several large very specific sellouts to large corporate interests. Yet David Leonhardt, who must have been hiding under a rock [...]

One Year Later, Evaluation of Health Care Reform Virtually Impossible

By: Jon Walker Monday March 14, 2011 8:39 am

As we approach the one-year anniversary of Obama’s health care reform scheme becoming law, it is important to note that the number of uninsured people in America has remained roughly the same, or actually increased slightly, in the last year–and the cost of health insurance has continued to rise. From Gallup: This isn’t because the [...]

With Crowley’s Ouster, Obama Fully Owns the Torture of Bradley Manning

By: Michael Whitney Sunday March 13, 2011 11:00 am

Barack Obama has forced State Department Spokesman P.J. Crowley to resign from his position after Crowley dared to tell the truth about the Administration’s torture of Bradley Manning.

Late last week Crowley called the Department of Defense’s treatment of Manning – including severe isolation and forced nakedness – “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.” President Obama, when asked about Crowley’s statement in a press conference on Friday, sided with the Pentagon, saying that the abuse of Bradley Manning was “meeting our basic standards.”

Let there be no question: with Crowley’s ouster, President Obama now owns the abuse and torture of Bradley Manning.
