For the second night in a row, Pfc. Bradley Manning has been forced to strip naked in his cell and spent the night in humiliation in his cell at Quantico. Manning’s lawyer writes on his blog that Quantico’s new brig commander, CWO-2 Denise Barnes, directly made the decision to strip Manning without consulting the brig’s mental health specialists.
PFC Manning was forced to strip naked in his cell again last night. As with the previous evening, Quantico Brig guards required him to surrender all of his clothing. PFC Manning then walked back to his bed, and spent the next seven hours in humiliation.
The decision to require him to be stripped of all clothing was made by the Brig commander, Chief Warrant Officer-2 Denise Barnes. According to First Lieutenant Brian Villard, a Marine spokesman, the decision was “not punitive” and done in accordance with Brig rules. There can be no conceivable justification for requiring a soldier to surrender all his clothing, remain naked in his cell for seven hours, and then stand at attention the subsequent morning. This treatment is even more degrading considering that PFC Manning is being monitored — both by direct observation and by video — at all times. The defense was informed by Brig officials that the decision to strip PFC Manning of all his clothing was made without consulting any of the Brig’s mental health providers.
Last month Barnes replaced Quantico Brig Commander James Averhart after Averhart improperly put Manning on a punitive suicide watch against the recommendations of Quantico’s mental health staff. Like Averhart, Barnes is also ignoring the mental health staff’s recommendations to remove Pfc. Manning from the highly restrictive Prevention of Injury order, and is not consulting the mental health providers on the inconceivable decision to strip Manning at night.
This was all just as promised; Coombs noted yesterday that Manning was informed he would continue to be stripped of his clothes and humliated before he goes to bed. Jeff Kaye, a psychologist specializing in torture victims, wrote last night:
Alert commenter Mad Dog noticed this important part of David Coombs’ article, chilling in its open avowal of continuing abuse. Referring to the imposition of forced nakedness, Coombs reports that “PFC Manning has been told that the same thing will happen to him again tonight.” Meanwhile, Trudy B. has sent me a link to a Kate Zernike and David Rohde’s June 2004 piece in the New York Times, on the “pervasive pattern” of forced nakedness at Abu Ghraib, at Guantanamo and elsewhere.
It got so bad at Abu Ghraib that in October 2003, Zernike and Rohde wrote that “Red Cross monitors were so alarmed by the number of nude detainees that they halted their visit and demanded an immediate explanation. ‘The military intelligence officer in charge of the interrogation explained that this practice was “part of the process,”‘ the Red Cross wrote in a report in February.”
I guess that’s the case now at Quantico. “Part of the process” is what torture has now come down to, embraced on U.S. soil against an American citizen.

About FDL Action
Gee, maybe Denise is a voyeur and Bradley is really…well…ah…well endowed. She just needed to get her jollies off with her vibrator while staring at her video monitor of Bradley.
OK, that was uncalled for. Seriously, the reasonthe woman, like the previous commander of the brig, doesn’t like to consult the mental health professionals is that they are afraid that THEY are going to wind up on the couch. And given their apparent proclivities to torture, it may very well be necessary and justified. If someone in civilian life did this, they would be on the FBI most wanted list. Think “Silence of the Lambs”.
Take note, citizens: the torture of Bradley Manning is not meant just to humiliate Manning, whilst stripping Manning not only of his clothing but all of his rights. Regrettable & inhumane & disgusting as all of this torture is for Manning, connect the dots, as well.
This treatment of Manning is a clarion call sent out not just to other Military personnel, but all serf citizens of these United States. Be duly warned that YOU, too, could be treated in a similar manner.
Think the Commander in Chief doesn’t want *all* of us to get that message loud ‘n clear????
Temperature at Quantico last night – 30 degrees F.
If they don’t crack Manning with this treatment, are they going to start forcing other prisoners to shit on him, like in Abu G?
What would a visit from the Commander-in-Chief to Bradley Manning look like? THIS
This continued abusiveness, through the tenure of two senior commanders so far, demonstrates decisively that the orders for abuse are coming from the top.
Thanks, Obama! You’re really a stud!
Obama and his administration can be Officially accused of committing “Crimes against Humanity” !!
This really upsets me… To think I gave our country 3 years of my life for what? That the Country I knew and loved for it’s ideals of life liberty and the rule of law is just sickening to see how all that has been betrayed by Obama…
NOT IN MY NAME
NOT IN MY NAME
NOT IN MY NAME!!!!!
If stripping him naked is not punitive, what reason is there? Come on…
I’d say what I want to happen to Obama, Denise and every other ****er involved in this war crime…
But I would probably be banned for it.
Great photo of Mr. Manning. Perhaps a few reminders would be in order that he no longer looks that young and fresh-faced, owing to mistreatment by his government.
It is necessary for officials at Q to explain exactly why Manning has been stripped. Not that they will tell the truth.
Yeah, Manning is an example of what will now happen to whistleblowers.
Obama is in Florida today meeting former Gov. Jeb Bush at a high school to promote ‘winning the future’ through education. FWIW.
disgusting and shameful. Obama knows better and he doesn’t stop it.
add snarling dogs, excrement, piling of naked bodies, more humiliation and we’ve got Abu Gharib US style.
Sounds like they are treating him like the “enemy combatants” at Abu Graib. The Army claims it is not “punitive.” They also said Pat Tillman was killed by the enemy.
Bingo. On a situation with this kind of visibility, including at the the top levels of government with Secretaries and Assistant Secretaries and Deputy Secretaries and spokes-people for Secretaries and even the vice president making statements — are we to believe that young Marine warrant officer Denise Barnes dreamed this up all by her lonesome?
They’d really like to put Manning up against a wall but this is something they can get away with.
Technical question: Is there bedding on Manning’s bed? Inquiring minds . . .
I guess jihadists no longer have to hate us for our freedoms.
The whole taboo and obsession in this society regarding nakedness and “private parts” is part of the problem…who cooks this sh*t up anyway…
Winston Smith was fictional, Bradley Manning is a real human being but what my government is doing to this person would be straight of 1984 and the Ministry of Truth(the MSM ) is working overtime suppressing this info while the Ministry of Love(DoD and the MIC) wreaks havoc on other human beings minds both here and abroad.
Good one.
This will backfire. Aside from a few simian-brained sadists, the average person (soldier or civilian) knows this kind of treatment of prisoners is shameful. The military always knows how to fuck things up.
Be one of the few, the proud, the depraved.
It’s what they do best.
People who never learned to love?
Agree.
Obama the Torturer
There … fixed it for ya.
Strong narcissistic component (“me, me, me” I above all else, center-of-the-universe thinking). Often almost infantile thinking (e.g. Vitter, diapers and transactional “sex”).
March 20 Rally at Quantico for Bradley Manning
roundtrip bus from DC’s Union Station only $10.00

yep
And this is all against a man whose sole evidence against him is Adrian Lamo’s rather shaky word.
All for the crime of revealing to US readers what the rest of the world already knows about the US through bitter experience.
Our Unitary executive and all these other bastards get off psyco-sexually watching their commands being carried out via closed circuit TV.
Of course it doesn’t measure up to the 100+ “snuff” films where the guy’s crying, begging, pleading to live before they “snuff” him out.
Now you and I can’t or wouldn’t want to make “snuff” films but they can, they get off watching this shit and that’s all that counts.
Political prisoner.
I doubt Obama gives this any thought at all.
I called my senators (Gillebrand and Schumer) asking them to investigate the TORTURE of Pfc Manning and I called Sen. Leahy and Sen. Sanders. All the phone answerers were polite and “pass it on to the senator”, Sander’s phone answerer said “she knew where I was coming from.”
This stinks to low hell.
Wonder if Raymond Davis is being subjected to similar treatment?
Wonder if Senator Kerry would rush on over to look into it if that were the case?
How does one bring charges of bringing discredit upon the military against Chief Warrant Officer Denise Barnes?
“Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself.”
James Anthony Froude
A couple of times I’ve seen some conservatives post re Manning at FDL, and most if them have called Manning a “traitor” or worse and said that Manning “deserves” what he’s getting.
Again, I repeat: if anyone thinks such treatment – of being found “guilty” without *any* kind of trial & being summarily *tortured* based on rumors and innuendo, amongst other stuff – is *singular* and only will be applied to Pfc Manning… well, think again, citizens. Watch as *all* of our freedoms and rights are being stripped away.
Live & learn, citizens, live & learn.
Bradley Manning, lowly private, is stripped nude in front of a camera, but the dignity of his conscience is his mantle. Meanwhile, Emperor Drone-on, in his fabulously tailored suit, stands before the entire world naked as a jaybird.
This is an abomination.
Well yesterday Chuck Todd asked Morrell, “How about bring a journalist?” (time point 9:05 in MSNBC video from Mar. 3, 2011). OK– how about that journalist?
Manning’s treatment is the product of extremely sick minds. Those sick minds are going to be reelected in 2012. I will probably vote for Obama. You going to vote Green? Write in your own name? or are you calling a general strike or for torches and pitchforks? We are in such deep doo doo. Threads like this do nothing to change things. It gives people a chance to vent and provides the illusion of doing something. We need to start talking about real alternatives but I fear that’s beyond us.
We have a Democratic President we elected who could put an end to this with a phone call. How many of those who are offended by these actions WILL vote to reelect Obama in 2012? Stop whining. WE elected Obama, it’s OUR fault!
Thanks.
I don’t watch the lame-stream media so I appreciate the link. How’d you like the last line:
“I hate leaving it there, I wish we could go another twenty minutes.”
Here’s what needed to be said to round that off:
“I wish we could go another twenty minutes, but your rehearsed, un-countered, 10 minute spiel is all the time the Pentagon has allowed. We know you have to go and recharge your internal gyroscopic spin machine, so let’s move on and let all the bullshit you just spewed linger in the air totally unchallenged while we go to commercial only to return with something totally different.”
Yeah, that’s the same general response I got when I called Senators Inouye’s and Akaka’s and Congresswoman Hirono’s offices. The chap I talked to at Inouye’s office asked me some questions about the situation and we chatted for a while – the lady at Akaka’s just took down my comment and name and said she’d pass it along. Interestingly enough, that has sort of been my past experience calling those offices – Senator Inouye’s staff is MUCH more conversational and engaged. Not sure why.
I just had an appalling thought: Is Obama actually in control of the military? I mean, if I recall correctly, when a reporter asked Gibbs about the POI, he claimed to not know about it.
Let me be clear, I’m not trying to make excuses for Obama, I’m mad as hell at him for being a cave-man on, well, EVERYTHING, and if it comes out that he really isn’t aware, then that would tell me that, in addition to not actually being a member of Vertebrata, he lacks the – something else critical – necessary to be the Commander in Chief. But I know for a damn fact that too many of the military will go along with what their platoon leader or other authority figure tells them to do – regardless of whether or not it is a violation of regs or even just common sense. I filed charges against a few myself, and that general attitude was part of the reason I only served one term.
I’m just wondering if Barnes (or whomever is pulling her strings) would actually back off if Obama told them to – and if maybe the O is wondering that too?
Thank you, that is my worry as well. As the election season gets nearer and nearer, I fear that far too many of the good folks, the folks that do know what’s going on is just not right, will be fooled into believing the lesser of two evils bullshit again.
Please folks, we are BETTER than this. Remember this. No incumbant Democrat deserves a real progressive’s vote. Why do I say no incoumbant Democrat rather than just Obama???? Because Congress has oversight powers and they are CHOOSING not to use them, a choice for which they should be held accountable.
We all know what the bullshit arguments are going to be, that if we don’t vote for Obama we get _____________ (insert boogeyman, scary scary Republican name here) and this will be sooooo much worse.
NO. If you vote for the current incumbants, you are enabling this behaviour. Period.
As Nahant said above, not in MY name. Well, if you vote for these guys next year, then it WILL BE in your name.
Very well said nahant.
Damn straight. I didn’t serve my time for this bullshit either.
Not. In. My. Name. indeed.
I do NOT approve of this shit, and will NOT enable it by voting for ANYONE responsible for it.
I have heard this kind speculation before. If Obama is not in charge he should say so. Don’t you think?
Anyone who votes for Obama is an accessory to torture and murder.
Would it be helpful to put together press packets and try to get our local media to cover the protest at Quantico? John
I think since Jane’s altered the format here, way too many Party-liners are using it to reinforce the mindset that we Dems (especially Progressives) may hate what our electees do but the alternative is worse – and we have no choice but to fully support the Dem. Party, regardless how miserably it fails Progressives & Democratic ideals.
IF regulars to this site, whom I believe are “informed”, vote with the “tribe”, against reason (as many here argued for in the last election), so be it. BUT, at the least, let’s stop pretending there’s a substantive distinction between the “deplorable” Republicans and the “Party of the People”.
I agree, but come election time I promise you the Dems will invent a “scare” to convince you the Republican nominee would be way worse.
Is it shameful or just curious that not one Democrat in Congress is screaming at the top of his/her lungs to curtail the overy & blatent pre-trial abuses of an American citizen?
It’s sad, but the ONLY voting choice we have is to do our darnedest to defeat ALL incumbents. If there’s a saving grace, it’s that they ALL (every single one of them) deserve to be sent home!
I sent a strongly worded email to the White House this morning expressing how I personally felt about the treatment of Bradley Manning by his own government. I plan to repeat this daily, always requesting a reply. However, I don’t feel that they even care how this poor young man is suffering! They are so far away from how normal people think and feel it seems hopeless at times. If I were in the military, I would refuse to do my duty as long as my own government was torturing one of my fellow soldiers. As a citizen I am horrified by our government, but not afraid…we need to take a lesson from the people of Egypt and Tunisia and Libya. I do not give permission for this to happen in my name and I will tell them this every single day! Last night I was weeping, but today I am really pissed off…how dare they do this to him? NOT IN MY NAME!
How is Chief Warrant Officer-2 Denise Barnes allowed to order a male prisoner stripped? What if a DENNIS Barnes ordered a Pfc. BETINA-SUE Manning to strip?!?
(Pausing to squeak out a laugh…It’s so funny how we think responses from us, our votes, our opinions, the ole non-issue of Right vs Wrong, are worth anything in this world.)
Thank GOD that led by Firedoglake and others, this might actually be going somewhere. These were the last shameful, criminal, ruinous acts by my govt I was ever again going to concern myself with: Bradley Manning, Julian Assange with the dreamed up sex charge in the dickless country of Sweden, and Wikileaks, with all that they have shown us, that the mainstream news should have gotten out to us, but didn’t, because their uber fabulous jobs were on the line. (Example of one that didn’t get it: Keith Olbermann. You can’t have the big money AND your honor, Keith. See now?)
Y’all are who I agree with too. Everytime some “progressive stalwart” chatter-classman on the airwaves delivers a fresh “Did you hear about this? Oh my God!” story about the malkins, palens, huckabees, teabaggers, glen dreck, Boehner, and the rest of that Whole Selection of boogy mans, they are either doing it to take your attention off the danger that’s in front of you, or they’re being incredibly useful idiots. One is as bad as the other.
Oh, I certainly agree. We deserve to know if our military is defying the will of the president. However, I’m not a politician – and I’m certainly NOT politic – so while I would certainly go to the press and say, “Hey, Generals So-and-So and Such-and-Such are defying my orders – elements of the military are plotting against me,” I’m guessing that a politician feels the need to appear to be in control. Which makes them cowardly, stupid and complicit. So I guess it really doesn’t matter if Obama is being neutered by the military as well as the corporations and Republicans.
*SIGH* Me suffer heap big buyer’s remorse.
I’ve never known such regret. Moving to China during a cholera epidemic to help the peasants get through it, only to sicken and die along the road the first week, would not be as regretable to me as this. I see him standing up there exactly like Bush, self-contained, smug, cocky, oblivious, certain of himself, unperturbed about anything but Himself and His Own. This greatest of all dupe-jobs is a good lesson in being extra careful who you answer your front door to. The wiser and kinder they look and speak, the more you better holler, “Get away from my door and don’t come back.”
Remember, if he fools us twice…
Obama isn’t the lesser of two evils, of course. The evils are the same. The evils are One. The only reason some will still vote for him is that they really see it all as something like a sports competition – whose side beats whose – just as the sociopathic republican voters do. That’s why we keep getting the dirt on the boogy-peeple, beck and malkin and coulter and all the pig-eyed repug legilators. People will vote for Obama because they’re so mad at Beck, Hannity, O’Reilly, and the trash talking repugs in congress. Somehow, they’re being kept so mad at the “worser evil” that they don’t care about anything else. They’ll not only vote for him, they’ll campaign, they’ll give their money, they’ll risk their lives driving in a blizzard on a car with bald tires. I’m thanking the Great Spirit for Dr. Cornel West and that great articulating he does so well. It’s going to be a sleepless effort on every front.
Exactly. Thanks.
Exactly. Manning is an “enemy combatant” as far as the military is concerned.
The abusive treatment is systematic.
So much for the “a few bad apples” theory.
Marine Corps brigs back in the day were referred to as red line brigs because prisoners were required to walk a red line everywhere they went. Stepping of the red line was treated as an attempted escape regardless of intent or cause and immediately resulted in a beating. Beatings were routine for any and all infractions and you truly were at the mercy of your captors who had the normal human predilection to abuse absolute power by becoming abusive demigods only interested in meting out physical punishment and psychological torture to those over whom they lorded.
Today’s prisoners have it much better but it is still a Marine Corps brig which in no way resembles fantasyland. The discipline is over the top still and if you don’t have members of congress interested in your treatment you can still collect a bruise or two by not responding in an appropriately quick and exact manner to any order regardless of its lawfulness or justification. Manning should be thankful it is 2011 and he has HPI stamped on his personnel jacket meaning he ‘has political influence.” If not for that sleeping naked would be the least of his problems.
