The government announced that they are charging Bradley Manning with “aiding the enemy.”
David House is a friend and supporter of Bradley Manning who has been repeatedly harassed and detained by the government. He has written for FDL and was targeted in the HBGary/Palantir presentation for Bank of America to defame supporters of Wikileaks. House issued this statement on the new charges against Manning:
Through WikiLeaks we have been given direct evidence that the White House openly lies to congress and the American people in order to achieve political ends. Richard Nixon, in an attempt to stifle government transparency, once called Ellsberg “the most dangerous man in America” and accused him of “providing aid and comfort to the enemy.” Today we see the Obama administration continuing the legacy Nixon started by declaring whistleblowers as enemies of the state. It is a sad and dangerous day for transparency advocates everywhere.

About FDL Action
Signed.
Is the CID, DIA. DoJ and FBI done intimidating Manning so he can be treated as a citizen, indited and not presumed guilty until convicted? Hah
Whew, this Hope N’ Change after 8 years of war criminal Dubya is hard to keep up with.
Normally I’d wonder if Obama plans on locking Manning in Gitmo, but since he closed the place as promised, that’s not an option.
Signed.
Forward.
What enemy state are we at war with?
Amazing.
What enemy is it, please?
The real enemy is the American people, whom our lords and masters do not want to be properly informed.
All of them.
Mahalo, Jane… Signed, Fb’d, and tweeted…! ;-)
pardon me for repeating myself:
Killing civilians indiscriminately at checkpoints creates more enemies. Turning them over to torturers within their own armies creates more enemies. Shooting them in free fire zones from helicopters creates more enemies. Assassinating them from armed drones creates more enemies. Offering private contractors immunity and giving TF 373 immunity from accountability in their night raids creates more enemies. All PFc. Manning may have done is to shine a bit of sunlight on all of these self-defeating behaviors committed by American forces. Sounds like a patriot to me!
*heh* That still doesn’t answer the question…! ;-)
Per the website of Manning’s lawyer, Lieutenant Colonel David Combs:
I wonder if this particular charge against Manning is an indication of the US government’s categorization of Julian Assange.
Namely, that Julian Assange, for the purposes of the US Government, is considered an “Enemy”.
I wonder if that is “under the laws of warfare” or merely the “criminal code”.
Known knowns, or, Unknown unknowns…? ;-)
WTF……it’s not just a campaign slogan anymore.
Who are the enemy? The American people?
I signed the petition. I hope that doesn’t make me an enemy, too. I guess I’ll find out this weekend when I go down to Vermont to buy gas.
I suspect that what has the government’s undies in a knot are the secret names that Assange has filed as an insurance policy against his sudden disappearance. Those may be among the family jewels. In that case, they have a right to be sorely pissed. On the other hand Assange has them locked up, and he gave all the rest back to them to vet before handing the rest over to the press.
I thought that in order to aid an enemy you had to, you know, aid like, an enemy…
Yes.
At the rate the enemies list is growing, the only ones who aren’t are the Koch Bros, Coors, Mellon-Scaife.
signed — i figure i’m already on a government watch list
You so quaint.
Wow.
And can I just say that Wikileaks Interview widget is the coolest wwidget evah.
Is this widely known? In a move to shield Bush officials, the Obama team forced a clause into the recent UN sanction resolution.
Signed. Also.
Posted on the last Manning diary
This is the bottom of the long slippery slope of accepting congress can amend the constitution by adopting AUMF in place of the required Declaration of War with the specific grievances and acceptable remedies to the stated Declaration of War.
Amending the strict requirements of our guiding document is damn hard for a reason just to stop bullshit like this acting like the lie or law of the land.
There is no FUCKING legal war and no FUCKING Enemy to Aide period.
That’s the constitutional answer.
In the United States of America he is innocent and tortured thanks to the loose war criminals bush and cheney.
It’s God Damn Past Time To Look Back and Prosicute the true war criminals not this chickenshit case.
Grow some balls Obama. Now
*heh* Also, Known terrorists like MEK that is actively lobbying to get off the ‘terrorist list’…! ;-)
Surprised? It would mean Obomba would open himself up to the exact same charges, and that just is not gonna happen.

True dat.
Until they are enemies, of course.
You know ya are, Suz…! As I am, most assuredly…! *g*
I must be stupid, but I fail to see the logic of this failing to be a signatory to the ICC.
If there were an ICC in Hitler’s time and he decided not to sign, would he have been given a free pass at Nuremberg if he managed to crawl out of his Berlin bunker alive?
(3) That (state the name or description of the enemy alleged to have received the intelligence information) was an enemy
Assuming that Manning handed everything over to Wikileaks, I don’t see how Manning could be convicted of this – I just don’t see how Wikileaks/Assange fits the definition. Perhaps the reason that this hit know is that the Obama admin has a secret indictment of Assange…I would think at a minimum they’d have to have assange under indictment just to avoid the charges instantly being thrown out of court – that’s probably why they didn’t bring these charges previously.

Obama is a fraud, a dangerous fraud.
De-elect the president.
For those who posted this on Facebook, a PayPal logo appears on my screen just above Manning’s photo. I thought PayPal was “the enemy” in that they stifled contributions to Wikileaks and/or Assange. How did they get their logo there?
I think the photo is from the paypal/Manning story last week. Just the thumbnail that FDL has on file, i guess.
Signed and chipped in $20 for the cause.
“Speaking the Truth in times of universal deceit is a revolutionary act.”
PayPal is the enemy.
I have been sending this note to FDL Action and posting it in various threads, but have yet to see a reply.
Xipwire.
So now do we have a moral imperative to run someone to challenge Obama in the primaries?
If Manning’s efforts, like Ellsberg’s before him, were to provide information to US citizens about the activity of their own government and was done in the interests of improving government transparency, and thus the effective functioning of democracy, then we now know who the government thinks is the enemy: Its citizens. But domestic control has always been the main objective of the Fascist state and its ginned up GWOT.
“Don’t let them see us! Don’t tell them what we are doing!”
“Don’t let us pay”
Are these the words of the all powerful boards, syndicates,
cartels of the earth?”
–from “Last Words of Hassan Sabbah,” William Burroughs http://tribes.tribe.net/burroughsinterzone/thread/9f20fe71-2f19-409c-954c-5a29343daaad
““Enemy” includes (not only) organized opposing forces in time of war, (but also any other hostile body that our forces may be opposing) (such as a rebellious mob or a band of renegades) (and includes civilians as well as members of military organizations). (“Enemy” is not restricted to the enemy government or its armed forces. All the citizens of one belligerent are enemies of the government and the citizens of the other.)”
If I read the above correctly (always an if as English is my “second” language) citizens who are “hostile” to the US Governments actions are the “enemy”.
I would like to say any good judge would throw that crap wording out – but post Reagan and the 5 conservatives on the USSC, I really don’t know if we have any liberty left in the US – indeed yet another reason to move to Canada (they just decided to not get rid of their version of the Fairness Doctrine – thus continuing to require that those that present the “news” not lie – unlike in the US and Fox – indeed the attempt to change their law was so as to allow a Fox-north broadcast network – now cancelled since they are not allowed to lie)/
By the way, we lost the Fairness Doctrine via Reagan executive action/inaction – so Obama could bring back without regard to what those in Congress want. But then Obama could have made net neutrality the law of the land without Congressional approval – but what we got was much less. But at least it showed us how Obama is on our side.
Note that the Fairness Doctrine should not be confused with the Equal Time rule – The Fairness Doctrine deals with discussion of controversial issues, while the Equal Time rule deals only with political candidates getting their message out.
He would if he had won the war. If not for the deaths, it would be hilarious that a gov’t is trying to convince others to punish someone for war crimes, as they do the same on a daily basis, after illegally invading nations. F’ing hypocrites, all these politicians. On the same day they apologize for killing children collecting firewood. Butchers.
Here are the exact charges:
So why isn’t the White House charging those in the military who spoke to Woodward and gave him classified military info that was published worldwide? Could it be because of this?:
So if you’re in the military and your leaks of classified military information are good for Obama’a image by all means leak away Top Secret for all the world – including our enemies – but if you hurt Obama’s image, that is a capital offense!
Sounds like they are positioning Bradley Manning for Treason charges, which can bring the death penalty. God, I hope I don’t Gingrich, Palin, Romney or Huckabee in 2010 as my choice. Oh well.
Does this
mean that I, as a citizen of the United States, am the enemy of every Pakistani, every Yemeni, every Somali, every Iraqi, and every citizen of Afghanistan? Sounds like it.
Yes.
Any questions?
People, when they post the diary to FaceBook, need to de-select the photo of Bradley Manning that includes the PayPal logo, part of a petition to PayPal to STOP their disconnect of funds for the Bradley Manning defense effort. It isn’t an ad for PayPal, it’s just people not correctly un-checking the “No Thumbnail” box, or incorrectly selecting a photo thumbnail that refers to a now-obsolete action against PayPal.
*heh* Simple answer…! *g*
Funny, or maybe not, but listening to Obama without watching Obama, I always hear Nixon. Something about the cadence. Because of the similarity in delivery, I’ve listened closely for substance from the beginning and have found little. I always get the Nixon-echo.
“Today we see the Obama administration continuing the legacy Nixon started by declaring whistleblowers as enemies of the state. It is a sad and dangerous day for transparency advocates everywhere.”
Yes it is and this is only one example of how Obama has let us down. Anthony Noel at admin@themalcontent.com is forming a New Progressive Alliance to try to answer the question of where we go from here.
It’s either Eastasia or Eurasia. I’m not sure which one it is, but whichever one it is, we’ve always been at war with them.
That imperative has existed for some time. Who can we get, though?

Indeed corporate control was a subtext of 1984 – at least in my biased interpretation.
Peter Daou http://peterdaou.com/ listed out some dictatorial moves on science to help the oil companies and of course, on women because they are always a great target. It is very tiring to read about.
Signed also.
“Little did I know when I landed in Iraq that my life would never be the same again—nor would the lives of millions of others.”
— Mike Prysner
Iraq war veteran
Co-founder, March Forward!
Bradley Manning is a prisoner of conscience because he upheld the highest moral standards our country was founded upon. He blew the whistle on a corrupt and illegal war system that has wrecked havoc around the world.
On March 19, the 8th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, many thousands across the country will be marching against the wars. In Washington, D.C., there will be a massive veterans-led civil resistance at the White House initiated by Veterans for Peace. People from all over the country are joining together for a 12 noon rally at Lafayette Park, followed by a march on the White House where the veterans-led civil resistance will take place.
Many people coming to Washington, D.C., will be also participating in the Sunday, March 20 demonstration at the Quantico Marine Base in Virginia to support PFC Bradley Manning. Quantico is one hour from D.C. For the last eight months, he has been held in solitary confinement, pre-trial punishment, rather than pre-trial detention.
