Since both President Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates have promised that the United States won’t put boots on the ground in Libya, it is important to look at what now apparently doesn’t count as American troops on the ground. This must mean that: American military personnel who end up on the ground in Libya [...]

FDA Reverses Decision to Give Drug Company Right to Ripoff Pregnant Women |
| By: Jon Walker Thursday March 31, 2011 9:02 am |
This is a rare piece of good news reflecting the positive impact investigative journalism and public outcry can have. The Food and Drug Administration has partly reversed its horrible decision to grant a drug company an exclusive monopoly over an already commonly used medication, which allowed that company to jack up prices 15,000%. From the [...]
Leave Social Security Alone: Not Just Good Policy, It’s Great Politics |
| By: Jon Walker Thursday March 31, 2011 7:29 am |
I previously wrote how from a policy perspective I think it would be idiotic for progressives to even allow the idea of changing Social Security to be entertained right now, but it is equally important that elected Democrats realize that from a purely political perspective, refusing to make any changes to Social Security is an [...]
Hostage-Taking Officially Begins: GOP Senator Says He’ll Filibuster Raising the Debt Ceiling |
| By: Jon Walker Wednesday March 30, 2011 2:06 pm |
It’s official: at least one Republican senator is now committed to filibustering the raising of the debt limit unless Democrats give in to his demands. From The Hill: Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) has told supporters in Utah that he will filibuster the legislation to authorize Treasury Department officials to add to the nation’s multitrillion-dollar debt. [...]
Best Rebrand of the Year: War |
| By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday March 30, 2011 10:31 am |
Two years ago war in the Middle East was something that only reactionary hicks, discredited neocons and those with too many X chromosomes supported. Now it’s the purview of hip technocrats and “cruise missile liberals,” having been successfully repackaged as benevolent liberal paternalism.
As Mission Creeps, Americans Already Turning Against War in Libya |
| By: Jon Walker Wednesday March 30, 2011 8:08 am |
The American people haven’t been sold on our military actions in Libya according to two new polls. An AP-GFK poll found that 48 percent approved or leaned toward approving US involvement while 50 disapproved or leaned toward disapproving. Similarly, a Quinnipiac poll found 47 percent opposed, with only 41 percent in support. This is not [...]
We Could Have Bought a Lot of Nice Things with That $550 Million We Spent on Libya |
| By: Jon Walker Tuesday March 29, 2011 2:19 pm |
According to the Pentagon, in just this first week of our war “kinetic military action” in Libya, the military has already spent $550 million. From Politico: The Pentagon says it has spent $550 million on U.S. military operations in Libya since efforts to protect civilians from Muammar Qadhafi’s regime began 10 days ago. Details of [...]
What if Obama had Hoverboard Technology? |
| By: Jon Walker Tuesday March 29, 2011 12:26 pm |
According to the Obama administration, imposing a no fly zone doesn’t count as war. Nor does launching long-range smart missiles against a sovereign country or using high altitude bombers. Apparently, even using low-flying, heavily armed, ground-attack aircraft to hit a foreign country’s ground forces or providing direct air support to a rebel army count as [...]
Largest Mortgage Firms Profit from Crime, Kill Moral Hazard for All of Wall Street |
| By: Jon Walker Tuesday March 29, 2011 9:14 am |
I truly fear the next financial collapse, which indeed will happen, because over the past three years, both Republican and Democratic administrations haven’t just killed moral hazard for the larger financial sector, they have dragged its corpse down Wall Street in an elaborate funeral procession for all to see. The latest example of comes from [...]
GAO Examines Individual Mandate Alternatives – Well, Some of Them |
| By: Jon Walker Monday March 28, 2011 2:12 pm |
For some reason, the GAO didn’t directly make reference to the most effective alternatives that would do an even better job than the individual mandate at decreasing the number of uninsured–single payer or a basic public plan that would enroll the uninsured by default.
