It is important to put budget issues in perspective, so I have a simple request that President Obama, the top members of his administration, and his allies in Congress send a hand written version of this letter to constituents:
Dear low-income American,
I know times are tough. I know many of you saw your savings and home values hurt by Wall Street recklessness. I also know that, with official unemployment above 9 percent, it is tough to find a job, and many have been forced to choose part-time employment that lacks benefits. But as a result of extending the Bush tax cuts for millionaires, the budget deficit has grown.
So, despite your problems, you are going to be “asked” to sacrifice. Your president is planning to cut $2.6 billion from Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which helps people afford keeping their homes warm during the winter, despite the fact that due to the economic downturn the number of poor people needing help has increased significantly.
As a result of your going without heat next winter, we will be able to afford almost one whole week of fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which cost about $468 million a day. Although when you add in the many hidden costs like increased long-term veteran’s health care due to the conflicts, your sacrifice is probably only really going to cover maybe half a week.
I hope you understand that when we had to choose between providing basic necessities to our citizens or fighting about five more days in Iraq and Afghanistan because of [insert newest justification here], we clearly just had to choose the wars over you.
Sincerely,
Democrats in Washington

Perhaps they figure there will be fewer poor people needing to keep warm if the government doesn’t help keep them warm. I mean, the poor people can always join up for one of our glorious military adventures, right?
I’m listening to the President’s press conference. Remember all the way back to December, when he said the tax bill negotiations were like a hostage situation? Now he says they were a model of bipartisanship. He hopes the budget negotiations will be just as good.
All the corporate media hacks are asking him why he’s not cutting entitlements to the bone. No mention yet of war funding. No mention yet of cutting heating oil to the poor.
and there ya go -
‘Debt Commission hasn’t been shelved’
“framework for conversation”
to borrow Beltwayspeak -
I am “deeply troubled” by the blatancy with which they are now doing this shit – no triangulating, no bait and switch, just straight up fuck you to everyone but the rich
what in bloody hell ?
It’s okay. In our wonderful system of government, you’ll have the ability in 1 1/2 years to pick an icon generated by proprietary software on a privately owned, defense contractor guarded, piece of defense-contractor certified equipment, tabulated by more privatized software, for a non-choice of your own choosing. In the interim, thousands of similar decisions will be made daily, but you’ll eventually be afforded your opportunity at the
bullocksballot box.this guy has been very dishearting watching the man i voted for betray all the democratic values ,makes me want to puke every time he says bipartisan, just knowing that another fight has just been lost.im afraid we have been taken.
it seems that he has joined the gop,all my hope, and change, tired retoric now.
even the hope for change.is gone now those basterds!
But if they were to ask tough questions and expose the bullshit that is spewed from these politicians, they wouldn’t get invited to the White House for squirt gun fights anymore.
As we all know the most important roll of the press is to regurgitate what ever information that is presented to them, without question and never to expose the actual truth.
where the hell does that war money come from?
do they just print it up?
damn it I thought we won the presidential election
(but I didn’t think we won it for long)
When Obama said he was going to be a transformative President, I didn’t realize he was going to transform a lot of poor people into sick or demised ones. That’s what I get for not reading the fine print, I suppose.
Great letter! Too bad that no one in the oval office will even bother to read it.
I think you’ve got it wrong, Jon. I think that O is screwing poor peeps rather than cutting other spending so he can get reelected. Ya know, all those donations from all the dysfunctional inds in the U.S. economy, incl the MIC, that he needs to finance his campaign. The warz are only means to an end, keeping O in office.
Well, maybe if they got thousands of them. Are there that many firedogs?
Makes a lot more sense to stick up a liquor store with the hope of spending the winter in a heated cell.
The Chicago Tribune reports this afternoon: Man Found Frozen in Rogers Park Home (http://tinyurl.com/4lrhvvl). Seems there was no heat in his home. So much for being able to de-fund LIHEAP.
A family member of mine relies on the LIHEAP program to help her pay her heating bills. She lives alone in an apartment above a garage and it’s been bitterly cold here in the Garden State this winter. She is on unemployment and is unable to work due to failing eyesight. If this abomination of a budget is passed and the states are left to pick up the slack, I’m quite certain my esteemed governor Chris Christie will come to the rescue. /s
He’s not even original. That was Nixon’s line.
Kinda, sorta.
Fixed it for ya, Jon. Gotta stay honest here. They’re his tax cuts now.
China. You didn’t know that?
It has become pretty blatant, alright. Any pretense makes it seem all the more transparent. Just…whoa…
I’m also waiting for PG&E to tell me my rates are going up because of government funding cuts. We’ll see how long that takes.
And yes, they will go up, even though I’m not enrolled in any low-income programs. Just like health insurance providers, these fuckers will take everything they can get.
No, for real. This book by Hersh will confirm that.
After the North Vietnamese agreed to a cease fire in late ’72, Nixon broke the agreement and launched a bombing campaign right before the election. He was out to win all 50 states, but had to settle for 49.
PS
All of you longterm unemployed or under employed folks having a hard time just have to get over it. We can’t cut subsidies to Big Oil or Big Electric, that would be unAmer, er, uh, unbusiness like. It’s better to cut your assistance off so the Business community will like me better.
Got the picture? Good. I thought you would come around. It’s all bipartisanship.
If we don’t subsidize them they’ll run away to China! Booga Booga!
Maybe THAT’s what O meant by “more transparency in gov!”?
Fuck this. Fuck him. Me and mine are not voting for him again.
Glen Greenwald will be on the D. Ratigan show in a few. He will be discussing his latest spy and terror assault from the Chamber and BofA via our Justice Department.
I read the Shock Doctrine, but damn I didn’t think it would happen to America in my lifetime.
But on the other side of that crapshoot, what kind of economy would there be right now without the military spending? Somebody has to make all those toys they are destroying……..meh….sorry…just can’t do it…tried sounding like DKos 4.456 there, but can’t do it.
Obama has basically lost the left and the African-American vote, so now he’s attempting to appeal to the cruel right. If he is re-elected, it will be because of the cruel right, but even that is only possible not probable, because they hate him because he is bi-racial.
There are really only a few possibilities about this guy…he’s either clueless, has bad advisors, or was a Trojan horse from the outset, or is a sociopathic dysfunctional human being who happens to be charismatic enough to have pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes. Is a puzzlement.
Yes, there are a lot of other “disposable” items the government could be building or buying – food, clean water, pollution-free public transportation (okay, that might last longer than a stealth bomber…). Man, what a country we would have if our “defense” budget were cut by half, and corporate tax loopholes were closed. If public welfare and infrastructure were again considered important to the U.S. government. But I “hope” too much for “change”.
just what I was thinking today.
Obama goes to the chamber of commerce, says, please hire people, and they openly snub him.
the arrogant wall street guys, the coal guy, the oil guy that “just wanted his life back”
The control is so complete now, that they don’t even pretend that the President of the USA is more powerful than they are. The legislature, the presidency, the media, the courts, it’s all occupied territory.
Obama was the final piece of the puzzle.
All in plain view. It really is quite astonishing
I’ll take “What is a combination of Trojan horse and sociopath?” for $600, Alex!
Barry Zero Ronald Raygun’s love child from the 70′s. Barry is really a white ( on the inside) Conservative Harvard Corp. lawyer isn’t he?

Where are the priorities of this administration?
Still not so sure about the AA vote myself.
It helps that more and more prominent AA’s speak out about his bullshit, so I think the first cracks are showing, but anecdotal evidence (not sure I trust polls anymore) suggest to me his AA support is still very high.
It is time to ask which President cares more about the USAs poor, Obama or Hugo Chavez?
That about sums up our government’s priorities. They also want to cut some Pell Grant funding for low income students. There’s absolutely no justification for this given all the other crap they spend billions of dollars on. When they had the chance they didn’t have the balls to fix health care and eliminate the Medicare drain on the deficit. Obama is useless and nothing more than Reagan redux.
I’d like to borrow this and send it my senators. I live in WV and I KNOW there are many, many people who benefited for LIHEAP. I’d like to tell him that I saved him the trouble of making excuses, these are ready made just the dems.
Hey people can knock Chavez all they want but he did provide heating assistance for the poor here for how long?
I said on another site we should all send e-mails to the WH asking them to be forwarded to Chavez and in them we would ask for help for our poor.
It’s not just any old war. It’s nation-building too.

What’s wrong with the Afghan people rejoicing in peace and freedom?
They won’t tax the rich and they won’t cut war spending. But they will withhold assistance to the poor. The Oligarchs and their Fascist overseers are scum. They must be driven from power. It’s them or us.
The American working class is clueless and leaderless. It’s a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. People who have a voice need to be cultivating a bit of class consciousness. Only a unified working class has the muscle to defeat the Fascists.
It sucks to be poor. That’s why Obama extended the tax cuts for the rich: to give the poor incentives.
“The American working class is clueless and leaderless”.no truer words have been spoken.
But the problem is that those who supposedly care about the working class & have Radio shows are cheer leading for the WH.Just a few minutes ago I hear Thom Harthman’s discussion of Obama’s budget cuts…well he was comparing it to the GOP’s,in other words it’s the, “it’s not that bad compared to” bullshit.
Harthman is now trying to build a TV career & thus truth telling on behalf of the least fortunate doesn’t figure in that equation.”
Fuck you, Obama, fuck you hartmann
This letter needs to be sent to the voters, this time next year as the primary’s start. I guess Iowa and then New Hampshire are the top of the list.
Makes one wonder, how long before the Egyptian protests reach the american shore. My bet is long after my death.
This is a crystal clear encapsulation of the priorities of the United States government.
I agree. For all his knowledge, Hartmann really is a gutless prick and brown-noser when push comes to shove.
We need a REAL “left-wing” movement who isn’t afraid to call themselves “Socialists”. There is plenty of small groups and political groups and political parties in the USA that have the word “Socialism” in their name an/or description, but MOST Americans are too stupid to know what “We the People” means, or just don’t care, until it effects them. By not paying attention, we got the Great Depression, 9/11, the ‘Religious Right’, and miss the USgov’s terrorist imperialist bullying around the world.
