NBC's Richard Engel in Cairo holding a tear gas canister that says "Made in the USA by Combined Tactical Systems of Jamestown, Pennsylvania"
The people of Egypt are in revolt against Hosni Mubarak, an oppressive dictator propped up for thirty years with billions of dollars in United States military aid — your tax money.
Wikileaks reported today that the US has known of widespread abuse, torture, and even murder of political dissidents under the regime of Egypt’s dictator, Hosni Mubarak. In the streets of Cairo this week, American-made and supplied weapons are aimed at Egyptians, who are choking from tear gas also made in the USA.
That’s OUR tax money, used to torture and kill innocent people in Egypt.
Earlier today, the White House said it was going to “review” the $1.3 billion in military aid we send to Egypt every year. But the time for action is now while the people of Egypt fight for their freedom.
American policy in the Middle East is designed to help autocratic leaders like Mubarak torture Egyptians and suppress dissent. There have been rumors about Egypt as a channel for extraordinary rendition by the CIA, and we’ve seen the use of American weapons for thuggish purposes in the streets of Egypt this week.
We do not want to hear boilerplate public statements about “meaningful dialogue,” because there is no reason to assume the US government is being truthful about its backchannel communications with Egypt. And we do not want to hear that the government is “watching the situation,” as Egypt’s government beats back its own people who simply want a democracy.
We’ve watched long enough. Our tax dollars have propped up Egypt’s murderous regime for 30 years. It’s time for that to end.

About FDL Action
Done.
Amazing job today by everyone at FDL. Thanks Jane!
Spectacular work by FDL for weeks on end! You guys and gals are amazing. Thank you so much for the incredible, diligent work you do!!
Has the MSM reported this yet?
Signed.
What an outrage that American weapons are being used by the Egyptian dictator against his own people.
I also read that Egyptian government cannot survive without at least $1 billion of foreign aid, so it would be good to find out where that is coming from and shut it down.
The national debt is $33 billion, and it would be good to know who that’s owed to as well. In the past about half the money has been from the U.S. and it has periodically been forgiven.
Not only has the U.S. known of Egyptian torture, we have had an extraordinary rendition agreement with them since the Clinton administration.
Signed. Thanks for all the great reporting.
Maybe Obama can review when Egypt is going to pay us back for our aid? Maybe Obama can review the WH/CIA policy of supporting dictators.
Why we were not worried about Muslim terrorists until 9/11?
We need a pool to bet on when Mubarak will leave Egypt.
He’ll be at Heathrow by the end of the weekend.
Think he has to go somewhere like Saudi Arabia. Isn’t that where all the dictators end up? They have tight control on their population, speak the same language & have strong ties to Swiss bank accounts.
This is the way we can influence what happens – cutting the money lifeline to dictators.
Absolutely over the top reporting and writing these past weeks (ahem . . . . years!).
Thank you SO much Jane!
I’ll take next monday. Either the protests go away in a week, the protests get put down with tanks or he steps down the WH will give him a week if next weekend the protests get worse Monday he’s gone. I’m an optimist:)
First call the D.C. Hilton and see when the Presidential suite is available.
Guess Kissinger is not gonna promise to bring him to the US, huh?
Would that be walking, or feet first?
The Mubaraks are probably staying at Blair’s house. Little weekend trip with 97 pieces of luggage allegedly.
I think he’s already left the country. JMHO London
Not me — it’s Siun who has been typing her way into carpel tunnel’s syndrome over this.
She has done a remarkable job, as always.
She has been awesome!
Wait eCHAN is hustling us???/s
I believe in D.C. the place to stay is the Hay-Adams, across the street from the WH. Second choice might be the Willard.
Dammit…I should have known…
Link? If this is true its great news.
Hmmm… Naked Capitalism nails it…
Inequality is Worse in US than Egypt, Tunisia, and Yemen…
Is there anyway that the U.S. public might contract what the Tunisian and Egyptian people have? Outrage and courage!
He’ll figure out a way of getting out alive. Only lefties commit “suicide” before they can escape coups.
All of this has happened more or less in the last 3 days, I don’t think Mubarak has a week. It all depends on whether he can buy time with the reorg, and if the protestors back off at all then I’m sure Obama will help him exploit that edge as much as possible to remain, which he will. If the protestors keep up the pressure I doubt he would survive a week, physically, without stepping down.
Everything today was about buying time, but it’s really on the scale of days. This morning I was seriously wondering if he would merely survive the day. He came out, bought time until tomorrow, and that’s about it so far.
Saturday night getaway
Ok that is a theme we should hammer on!
Signed. Thanks!
I heard on NPR today that the Obama administration is telling Mubarak to see what’s happening as an opportunity to reform.
That’s not a good enough response from the US leader.
Nor is it good enough for the Egyptian leader to sack his cabinet.
And yet no one’s rising up here…

Well, if it’s a vote to cut foreign aid, I think we can count on Rand Paul’s support, lol.
Big test for Obama and he is failing badly by sprinting for the middle.
How about a petition to give us our tax money back…with interest. A golden parachute for the American people.
LS did you look at the time stamp….?
January 25, 2011 6:03 PM EST
No…aha…all in the plan…
http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/104960/20110125/suzanne-mubarak-of-egypt-has-fled-to-heathrow-airport-in-london-unconfirmed-reports.htm
Son and Wife but not him yet.
Thank You:)
Like CT pointed out…it’s dated 1/25. I bet he’s already there by now.
CNN: “There are more than 600 american troops in egypt”
Why???
Sure we can take it out of the CIA budget the less money they have the less wars we end up fighting later on. I wonder if we could get CBO numbers on that.
Not good news are they advisers? Advisers are never good news.
How many troops does it take to
change a lightbulbprovide safe passage for a fallen dictator…Get it from Goldman Sachs etal.
Huh??
It makes me sick to watch Biden, Kerry, etc., talk about the opportunity for change when they have stood behind Mubarak for all these years.
600 is peanuts basically, the Embassy Marines and miscellany readily fills the bill…!
They are mainly seen as part of the support for Israel and … sleepy here so I need to go back and check … involved in missile defenses. Their role was mentioned as worrisome during Cast Lead.
The big shills are shillin’ big time ;^)
There was a caller on , I think, the Diane Rehm Show this am suggesting that very thing….he was a long-time unemployed person.
Hey, I stayed in a top floor suite with a view of the Washington Monument at the Willard once. (Courtesy of a babe I was dating who had heavy connections in the D.C. travel industry.) It was niiice. (And she was hot.)
Signed.
There are prolly more than 600 U.S. troops in every country in the world. Why? Becuz we can. Empire, babe!
Hi Everyone,
I had to leave for a few hours and just getting back in. I see where Obama spoke and Mubarak spoke. Has any other Nations Leader spoke on the plight of Egyptians?
Oh, get over it. Mock the idiots instead of getting sick over the stupid things they say.
Signed.
Geez, I just stayed there twice, both time with my son, and not on the top floor, and not with a particular view. It is, however, conveniently located and verrry nice.
Great reporting and insight Jane, Siun and staff .. I signed the petition as an International observer .. I so admire the courage of the common man/woman standing up for equality and real freedom .. lesson to be learned here by all of us ..
Good point… A Patriot Bn. would comprise 600 soldiers alone…! I’ll guarantee ya they’re not about to fire on any Egyptians, unless they need to defend their immediate perimeter…! ;-)
[[[[[Siun}}}}}
No speeches that I have seen, but AJE has been reporting selected quotes from various world leaders. They are all nearly identical, calling for restraint and non-violence from both the government and protesters. The usual bland diplomatic noncommittal drivel.
But the midget minds here are hearing from the propaganda box that they’re exceptional, so it’s all relative.
Where’s the petition to cut off the similar aid package to Israel, Jane? Essentially, they’re part of the same overall package and mindset, even if the Israelis have a very different U.S. constituency than that of the Egyptians.
And as the U.S. found out in Pakistan and Iran, there are never enough to defend the U.S. embassy.
Agreed!
Thirded
x4
We shall see in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez, eh…? ;-)
Thanks, Phred! I know I told you already, but you have some excellent posts going on at the Buzz.
The abused finally rise up to fight off the abusers, and now the protectors of the status quo, otherwise known as ‘leaders’, call for restraint. Haha.
Pushy, eh…? ;-)
But I’ll 5th it(or some such number)… *g*
Signed. But can we take some of that military aid and use it for the new government to inject into the Egyptian economy?
When Mubarak is gone, that is.
Gracias…
Looks like the Jordanians are up on it too.
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/01/2011128125157509196.html
Don’t you know they are uprising over there because of hatred for our freedoms? :^)
Yeah, it really is a bit much isn’t it?
PeasantParty, I’m more clueless than you might imagine, I’m not sure what the Buzz is, can you give me a hint? : )
Sorry – did have that wrong … the 600 are the US portion of the multinational force in the Sinai.
Youda thunk the U.S. woulda learned by now. Esp. after the East Africa bombings. Still, I’m keeping an open mind.
It’s an honest question, as you know, and I was surprised nobody had already asked it as I read through the thread. I doubt Jane considers it “pushy.”
The real midgets are the rich elite who think having a bigger share of a shrinking pie is a great deal. Under FDR American business grew GM was the worlds biggest company. Now American firms spend money to buy or buy into foreign companies to grow profits.
Funny India, China, Brazil we are talking about countries with strict trade polices and or Lefty economic policies yet our capitalist countries can’t wait to invest there.
Yep. Jordan’s on the list of dominoes. Lots of Palestinian refugees there. And a little twit as king.
And where is the petition for the US to close its military base in Colombia? Every single country in S.A. except the puppet government in Colombia (from where I’m writing) wants Uncle Sam’s military OUT of the hemisphere! Muy pronto!
Your posts show up at Buzzflash, I guess because they have teamed up with Truthout.
Our ‘Blue Helmet’ UN tasked troops…
For now, it gives me pleasure to imagine how uncomfortable the Israeli government is tonight.
Our local PBS is showing Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Crops and the lines of soup kitchens. I’m telling you it looks like today!
Obama just increased our aid to Colombia the other day. Eric Holder has a lot of friends there.
Guaranteed that Bibi is having a ‘fitful’ sleep…! ;-)
Do you live in Colombia, or are you visiting?
Huh. The miracles of modern technology I guess. Thanks : )
Yes, and I am glad because I check them everyday too. I miss being at Duncan’s place but I really can’t stand that comment system he has now.
You’re half right. The neocon on Tweety says it’s all the Muslim Brotherhood’s fault.
Nah, can’t sign it. Maybe another day.
Ha! The Brotherhood didn’t show up until early yesterday Egypt time. The citizens had already been protesting long time before then.
Just passing through. Flew in from Lima last night, will be in Philly tomorrow.
Just got back from a run through the campus of the national university in Bogotä. Had to pass through guards to get on campus. Next to Plaza Chë in the center of campus is a grassy meadow where the young scholars congregate after lecture. As I cruised by, I detected a scent vaguely reminiscent of the hill at Woodstock.
That’s right, but no one in Tweety’s audience will ever know that.
Do you know why the Brotherhood ‘showed up late’…? First, on Tuesday the first real day of protests, Mubarak rounded up 500 MB members they’d had their eyes on… Every day since many more were arrested and detained…! 8-(
Travel safely.
experts are saying if Mubarak goes, so goes Saudi Arabia, so I don’ think i would be very smart to go there
Rumors say those suitcases are filled with cash.
Blair’s House or Blair House? s/
I can’t imagine SA “going”, although I’m no expert. Who said that?
Link?
The “expert” I heard on AJ argued just the opposite. That Saudi Arabia would not be one of the dominoes, owing to greater control of govt, wealth of govt being able to buy off pop, and partly derivative of that, not the same grievances of the pop.
Mubarak was a corrupt puppet of the USA and Israel, and the Egyptian people finally got fed up with it.
The American people need to get fed up with it too and end our massive entitlement handouts to Israel, and to Egypt and Jordan to be nice to Israel. We can no longer afford both the cost of billions in direct support to Israel, and trillions in the “War on Terror” is a direct side effect from Israel and our one way relationship. Average Americans and our political leaders have been muzzled on this for far too long.
OK, that was my take too.
You don’t want to hear about my traveling adventure through the Andes in Bolivia and Peru. Got caught on the road in a snowstorm at 16000 feet.
Jordan, next, and then the House of Saud…!
Do we know what unit those men are attached to, or the branch of the military they belong to? It’d be interesting to know if they’re just general infantry or something more specialized.
Hope you were wearing thick socks. *heh*
For 30 years Eqypt has been a satrapy. Now everyone is having a “Do’h!” moment?
The House of Saud isn’t as stable as the ‘experts’ state…! 8-(
They’re facing serious scrutiny over the recent flooding in Jeddah…! It paralyzed the Sauds…
I do. Can’t imagine being up on a ROAD at that altitude.
You should have seen them being question by real journalists. Kerry was asked how he could say that the government needed to listen to the people and say that Mubarak should stay when if there listen to the people Mubarak should go. he’s not looking to good on Al jazeera when asked real questions.
The S.A. heads of state are trying to isolate the Colombian president because of their concern of what the US is up to with its base in Colombia. Inspections are not allowed.
Wonder what line of work Holder’s friends are in.
Hpuse of Saud – house of cards.
Assassinating union leaders for American corporate interests.
A parachate would have been useful. Guardrails do not exist in the Andes.
That sounds exciting.
I once visited SA in the summer. Got as high as 17000′ outside of LaPaz, but no new snow. (Near the equator, so I think the seasonal diffs are wet vs. dry.)
Were you caught in the heavy rains that were snow at your altitude? We got caught behind a massive traffic jam in Brazil, owing to a washed out road, so I have some familiarity with the problems that can arise there from bad weather.
Oof… that would totally suck…! 8-(
Bingo.
Hadn’t heard about flooding in Jeddah. Do you have a link?
Kinda like that whole Katrina mess that their buddy Dubya got into…
Under Obama the non military aid has decreased.
For reasons different than what is happening in Egypt, though, correct? There is corruption and repression in SA but the standard of living is totally different. Anyway, I thought the threat to the House of Saud came from wahhabists.
No Problemo…! ;-)
Guard rails do not exist on the road up Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah. I once asked the van driver why not, and the A was simple: avalanches would destroy them, and the plows need to push the road snow over the edge.
Imagine the reason(s) in the Andes might be more like affordability.
Let me guess, Tweety is letting everything he says go unchallenged?
Heh. Sounds exciting, actually. But I have a stupid sense of fun.
Dylan Rattigan guest a few minutes back said global poverty level is considered wages of less than $2 a day. 40-50% of Egyptians fall in this category.
When we dropped in altitude and out of the clouds, we lost the snow.c
Didn’t see torrential rain, but in Puno (on Lake Titicaca) a hailstorm hit dropping 2 inches of hail in a half hour. The racket of the hail hitting the glass roof of the bus station was ear shattering.
I’ve always thought Kerry was quite dumb but smart enough to marry well.
A tourist moment indeed, eh…? ;-)
The threat to the Saudi regime from Wahhabists has been longstanding, to say the least. What seems to be a common thread in the Tunisia event, the Palestinian reaction to the Palestine Papers and what is happening in Egypt is the important role young people are playing, and in Tunisia, young, highly educated women (women have more rights under the Tunisian constitution of the 1950s than do American women under ours). There is a large number of young people in Saudi Arabia who are watching this, and they hate the religious police even more than they hate the Sauds.
A recent post at Raw Story linked the collapse of the Soviet Union to the Chernobyl environmental catastrophe. The author drew a comparison to the BP oil spill. If floods in SA have a political impact, there is at least one precedent.
I looked at the glass above and ducked for cover, but it didn’t phase the local crowd.
I think I’ve been to Puno. Went from LaPaz to Lake Titicaca to Peru to Machu Picchu to Cuzco to Lima. Have a simple yarn wall hanging made on the floating island of the Uros.
Yeah, I’ve heard stories about the religious police. Ok. Interesting.
We had pretty good weather for the entire trip. The washed out road occurred in a rain that happened a day or two before we got there.
Generally speaking, young people worldwide don’t like the religious police. Even here in Wasilla.
It’s waycool to see someone flashing a “Made in Amurka” teargas cannister in the MSM.
On the other hand, Joe Biden is saying that Mubarak should stay.
Biden is being sent out to sound like the idiot of the week. Obama did his turn last week.
Biden is the Village Idiot (TM) every week.
The Wahhabists are the principal repressors, period…! Al Queda is a direct branch of that vile spewed…! The Bin Laden family is closely linked to the House of Saud, which has funded way too many Wahhabi madrassas throughout the Middle east…1 8-(
Jane,
I agree with your sentiment and what you are trying to do. However, there is a basic fact that is, misrepresented to and, misunderstood by most Americans. The aid given to Egypt (and Jordan) is not an aid for Egypt, Mubarak or Egyptian people In reality, the money given to Egypt is, in fact, additional AID TO ISRAEL, on the top of over $3.2 annually given to Israel. Basically, this is a bribe on behalf of Israel, so that when Israel steals, brutalizes and murders Palestinians people, which is every day, Mubarak (and Jordan) can pacify its Arab population, which includes a number of Palestinian refugees. Because of this aid Mubarak collaborates in Israeli crimes and makes Arabs look other way while Palestinians suffer. Military aid given to Egypt is worthless and incapable of defending the country against external attack (which will be from Israel). But it is just enough to brutalize its own citizens. WE can sign as many petitions as we want but there is only one group of people who, is responsible for giving this and, who can stop this aid to Egypt. This is a J***** thing.
Swopa is upstairs…
Late Night: Egypt the Prize
Petitions are a tool we use to identify people who are interested in a particular issue. Once we identify them we can ask them to take actions of increasing sophistication and complexity in consort such that maximum pressure is exerted on identifiable weak spots within a system.
Thank you for your concern. When it comes to the influence of money in a political system you might be surprised what we understand.
The caption to the photo of Richard Engel says he works for CNN. He is the chief foreign affairs correspondent for NBC, not CNN. He was on Rachel Maddow’s show today (Friday), and was way better than the typical MSM correspondent. Rachel devoted her entire show today to the Egyptian uprising. Time well spent.
~~~Thank you for the correction. It has been fixed.~~~
AIPAC is too strong a force to assail directly…! 8-(
Signed. Thanks, Jane! I’ve looked forward to the chance to sign a petition in support of the Jasmine Revolutions.
Who’s next? Jordan? Algeria?
This is not a good year to be a dictator.
signed! Maybe this will help bring positve change to the middle east and the people will understand that the US will be behind them w/o having a gun pointed at their head!
Agreed. Time to knock off these charades.
If and when the revolution succeeds, I hope the new government of Egypt
will be more sympathetic to the people in Gaza and help them with a
revolution against the Israeli military policy against a sovereign people.
