Firedoglake.com’s Jane Hamsher went on MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan Show this afternoon to discuss Bradley Manning’s imprisonment at Quantico Marine base, and how she and David House were detained at Quantico for two hours yesterday.
Hamsher explained that the government’s goal is to completely isolate Bradley Manning. When Dylan Ratigan asked if she feared her appearance would further endanger Manning, Hamsher replied that “the only thing that’s going to stop the abuse of Bradley Manning is when people start asking questions.”

About FDL Action
Thanks for posting this. Since MSNBC is now on my block list due to Olbermann’s ouster, these posts are the only way I will see Jane’s appearances.
Thanks Michael.
Jane, pitch-perfect, as per usual. Kicked-in $30 to your Manning fundraiser. Sorry, it wasn’t more.
I have not listened, but will. I had read that his parents do not want to visit….Is he allowed any visitors other than House? (and his attorney) Do we know if he wants any other visitors?
Go Jane.
P.S. How long before Dylan Ratigan’s gone?
We’re proud of YOU, Jane. Get ‘em, Hon! :o)
A former physics teacher and coach, perhaps mimicking a few Nobel laureates, always reminded us that asking questions was the only way to find answers, but that the trick was to ask the right question.
Gibbs will get back about Manning in 3, 2, 1 … never.
Great job, Jane. Stay safe.
For use with your wingnut friends and relatives, visiting those in prison is a corporal work of mercy, taken from Matthew, chapter 25:
Interestingly, Cenk was railing against the ‘Establishment’ too, as a fill-in…! ;-)
Jane was awesome as always and it was great to see DR bring up the incident…!
I wonder if David House’s 3 hour questioning was similar to the episode yesterday wherein David House and Jane were asked for the same information over and over again. What all could there be to talk about with House for 3 hours on what amounts to 1 question? Harassment for harassment sake a habitual bad habit with these “Security” types.
And for the not so wingnut: The Inaugural speech of Jesus to begin his ministry was to “announce good news to the poor, proclaim release for the prisoners…and let the broken victims go free….” Right out of the 1st Century. When will we/they get it?
Jane, You were great and thanks for helping David House… that’s the decent thing to do. We have your back.
Don’t give up the fight.
And the US has many political prisoners in jail and has had them for decades.
I don’t see how his situation is abuse. What inmates at Pelican Bay gets abuse.
Great job Jane!
No more MSGOP for me either.
Jane as always you nailed the point. He is a Citizen and still has full constitutional rights and it is unconscionable what is being done to him. Fuck they treat that crazy murder in Arizona better than Manning is being held and that guy KILLED a Federal Judge. WTF has happened to my country I gave 3 years of my life for?? As Jane said we must be a country of Laws and NOT of Men…
OT… CT your msn addy has been compromised…
Yep, I’ll watch a video posted here but I won’t give them any more traffic. Ever.
Well. So much for Due Process. With justice and freedom for all…my ass.
Thank you Jane…for all you do and for who you are.
Excellent.
I’ve also been wondering where President Obama, AG Holder and Defense Secretary Gates are concerning Bradley Manning’s outrageous treatment. I would have expected this type of treatment of prisoners under the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld administration, but I find President Obama’s seeming disregard and disinterest for how Manning is being treated as very, very unsettling, especially since Obama cut his teeth presumably on the U.S. Constitution.
Since the beginning of established military and governments, treason has been a crime punishable by death. Typically no questions asked once proven guilty. Treason is defined as a violation of allegiance to one’s sovereign or to one’s state, a breach of faith and confidence entrusted by one’s government and the betrayal of the allegiance that a person owes his sovereign or his country.
By definition, Bradley Manning has committed a blatant act of treason in its simplest form. Bradley Manning has broken his personal oath of enlistment that he spoke, as he raised his right hand and swore to defend his country. He has trampled his integrity into the ground and is officially an enemy of the state.
He isn’t a hero. He made a promise, an oath, to defend America and obey his Commander in Chief regardless of his political beliefs or personal opinions. There is nothing that excuses his behavior or justifies his actions. He committed treason pure and simple. He broke every military code entrusted upon those who serve our great country and work to keep it safe. He is a traitor to his fellow soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen. He is a disgrace.
He is a traitor..He should be tried for treason, convicted and….
Except that Manning has not been charged with treason so at that point your entire premise collapses
What did he do which was treason?
Wow! Did I sleep through the charges, arraignment and trial? Thank you kumari for letting us know that he has been found guilty even before being charged with any crime.
“He is a traitor..He should be tried for treason, convicted and….”
Scooter Libby is a bit off topic, don’t you think?
And even if he had been charged with treason, which he hasn’t been yet, he hasn’t been tried for it and convicted of it. He’s innocent until charged and proven guilty.
irrellevant
yes he is..but we hold prospective fellons without bail all of the time.
And he has admitted his involvement
Not in conservativeworld. There, the only thing that matters is what FOX and Limbaugh say. Everything else is liberal socialism.
Ms. Hamsher has no mean bone in her. A real sweetie pie with a good backbone that has plenty of fight for right. And what great follow up to yesterdays brig event. No more harrassment to Manning? Maybe Jane can turn them around. Getting on MSM the next day is a real stroke of genius! Not many could pull this off. Great humanitarian effort for all prisoners.
finally, someone who “speaks truth to power” …. the power of the left “wingnuts” here … got your back !!
Um, no. The oath is to defend the constitution, not America (which America, anyhow, North, South, all of the above?). So treason would be if he saw a constitutional violation & didn’t report it. Allegedly, he’s doing just the opposite. So he would not be a traitor, he would be a patriot.
Now Cheney is someone who could be charged with treason along with:
Rumsfeld, Myers, Rice, Cambone, Wolfewitz… the list includes most of the Bush Administration. How about Colin… I lied through my teeth at the UN.. Powell?
“IRRELEVANT”??? It’s “irrelevant” that he hasn’t even been charged with a crime but you’ve already got him convicted of treason? How arrogant can you possibly be?
do you not read entire posts?? I said he should be tried, convicted, and…I did not say he has been tried and convicted..
Hey MOD WTF are you allowing this kind of blatant lying and “UnVeiled” threats” to get past the filters… and you?? a wondering nahant wants to know…
MOD??? stamping foot down.. Why?? kumari IS inciting violence against Manning…
paybacks are hell aren’t they …. if Libby is quilty of anything it is not outing the lying husband-wife duo sooner !!
VERY
Interesting. The Constitution and “innocent until proven guilty” (which since he hasn’t even been charged with your preferred crime as yet) is “irrelevant”?
So much for due process. I guess we just go ahead and name kumari emperor and let her rule.
but I’d rather not, if you don’t mind.
When you stated that by definition he was a traitor, you had tried and convicted him. No walking it back with your later equivocations.
quilt by association.
Or, as a great man once said, MORANS
Note to self: pay no attention to the hairy dwarf under the bridge …
WHERE IS THE LYING, AND WHERE ARE THE THREATS??
First, he gets a trial. Then, you can call him whatever you want. But, first, he gets a trial.
See if you recognize the following lines:
Was that you who said that or some other “kumari”? Sure sounds like you’ve got him convicted to me…
Good point. He should be tried. Well said. And he should be treated humanely as a prisoner under the guarantees of the Constitution.
Dear Jane, is he getting food and water, a shower once a week and a place to sleep?? HMMM Sounds like he is well cared for to me
I believe that you have confused the players….
*finger on nose*
He may be guilty of murder. Doesn’t mean we should torture him or deprive him of visitors, news, light, a pillow… I could go on.
The man has a right to due process under the Constitution. That’s the end of the conversation.
These trolls can sling poo all they want. Doesn’t change the facts. We’re torturing an American soldier on American soil.
They’re not allowing him to sleep regularly.
You have no proof of guilt of anything. For all really know he is a scape coat for some else who the Gov’t doesn’t want outed. You have nothing to base anything you said on… As said “Show me the Fucking BEEF”
As for the violence you stated
Give me a fucking break if that is not a call for his execution.. Shit my 10year old grand kid would recognize that “Veiled Threat”…
And one more thing kumari, though obedience to the chain of command including the Commander in Chief is implied, the United States is one of the very few countries in which military personnel do not swear an oath to the head of state. You would know that if you had ever served anything but yourself. You also would know that there isn’t anything in the UCMJ about what Manning may or may not have done. If he did release classified information then there are sections of the UCMJ that encourage, even require outing lawbreaking by higher ups.
All the neocon trolls screaming treason should remember that Bushco murdered soldiers by placing them in harms way based on lies and personal greed.
You would know that if you had ever served anything but yourself.
While watching porn..
Do you have a link to that? He allegedly admitted his involvement to Adrian Lamo, a convicted felon and publicity whore who has contradicted his story multiple times in multiple interviews. The basic facts of his “evidence” are convoluted at best and he can’t keep them straight from one conversation to the next.
If this man were a civilian a defense attorney would’ve gotten the case dismissed out of hand for lack of evidence.
So, care to provide us a link to Bradley Manning stating he leaked the cables?
707!!
I would just like to add that kumari misses the basic fact here. In this country you are innocent until proven guilty. Even if the man had admitted anything, he hasn’t been tried and convicted by court marshall or in civilian courts. Until that day comes, if it ever does, he is guilty of nothing.
Please don’t block Ratigan, he IS the best show on TV and needs ALL the support possible.
Nothing against Ratigan but I’m not supporting MSNBC in even a peripheral way.
It’s a good thing you got kumari’s back. I don’t know how to respond to that witty and relevant barb. *whew*
/bs
Then what News program Are you going to support. Not that I think that firing Keith was anywhere near ethical or right but some of the other personalities do deserve our support simply because they Do push the Left’s POV!…
Hey Peg how goes it today??? ☺☺☺☺
I can’t wait to look at the Neilsen ratings tomorrow to see how many viewers MSNBC lost in Keith’s time slot.
I would like some more information on David House. Let me get this straight. He’s a Hacker? Regardless of what he’s doing here for Bradley Manning, he’s a Hacker, right? Is that an occupation? How do you make money at being a Hacker? Aren’t Hackers generally engaged in illegal activity? Do we really want to be supportive of Hackers? How close of a friend is David House? Are his motivations truly altruistic?
Jane, THANKS. It would be special IF you showed Manning 42,000 supportive signatures AND a check totaling $10 from each supporter. Talk is too cheap on this one, I’m in.
Why are you so enraged against this young man? He had a visitor who has repeatedly been allowed to visit him, then arbitrarily refused. What is decent treatment in that?
proof ??
Hackers on wikipedia.
Not necessarily illegal. A lot of them exploit security loopholes for profit, by finding them and pointing them out to the companies for a fee. This is what Adrian Lamo did for quite a while (Manning’s accuser).
You can do better than that, can’t you? Google him, ***Mod Note: I trust we can have a conversation about the issues without descending into namecalling.***
What. I asked the questions and you ask me for proof?
Bradly Manning isn’t even CHARGED with “treason,” let alone convicted of it. Get your facts straight.
I would imagine if I google him, I will get the latest about him, which is what Jane says about him, which isn’t much. So we’re back to square one.

They have free programs where you can learn how to use Google. They can teach you how to look up the word “hacker,” and also research David House to your satisfaction.
Poorly informed people who demand others do the most remedial research on their behalf rarely have much of value to contribute to online conversations. Some time devoted to learning how to execute extremely simple online tasks might improve the quality of your user experience.
And a mean one….see him on Jared, prior.
I don’t know if you claim “a lot of them.” SOME (because I don’t know the percentage) of them hack various systems to steal personal information like identities. If that were to ever happen to you, you might not think so kindly of “Hackers.”
Stupid Pentagon COINTELPRO trolls polluting the environment as usual. For the visiting stupid war monger pigs, I will explain the TREASON. It is the treason US government with a whole new set of secret rules that demotes the Constitution to a Goddam Piece Of PAPER.
Wikileak documents are US documents that reveal a criminal MAFIA dedicated to stealing the sovereignty of citizens. The Stakeholder Multinational corporations control the US government.
The US government was helping Monsanto punish countries that objected to Franken foods. Bankster fraud is protected while their secret offshore bank accounts are concealed from citizens. The strategic treasonous partnerships and networks of Pakistan Terror, US Terror and Saudi Terror continue their False Flag Wars. Government COINTELPRO, Blackwater, Lockheed and SAIC now target any one who is “anti-establishment”.
It is Fascism brought to us by Barack Obama.
ROFLMAO!!!
Jane well said and hey you were right on today on Dylan’s Show… Spot on! Keep the Faith Jane and we must not let these crazies destroy our Constitution and our basic American rights..
I think I’m done with cable news. I agree there are some worth supporting but they’ll have to find someone else to do so. Not going to have cable much longer anyway.
Unfortunately Morocco Bama is always after someone to do research for him/her. I actually started him/her off the other day with a link. Wasn’t good enough.
Thank you, Nahant. It is very disconcerting.
Might just might raise my blood pressure way too much so I tink I will skip reading it’s previous vitriol..
One sick puppy and I don’t mean an FDL Pup…
Hackers is a slang for a computer genius. The original guys who developed the internet and some of MicroSoft’s software called themselves hackers.
Some people who like to do computer mischief are hacking into places they should be.
So the term has lots of meanings and most of it associated with wrong doing. But that’s not how the word began back at MIT.
Are there any Chaplains or ministers to visit Manning? If he would want that….
Great, Jane.
You can slap someone upside the head from miles away, using only a keyboard.
I’m saving your comment for future use (w/ hat tip, of course.)
Got it….
I can’t abide tele for more than 2 minutes… even none news I fall asleep. It’s like a drug which gives you a bad trip or knocks you out. I’d like to get my wife away from it and then I would not have the remaining tv in the apartment.
> He is a traitor to his fellow soldiers, Marines, sailors and
> airmen. He is a disgrace.
I agree. He is a traitor to the fascist American military. And that’s a good thing. He is a hero to The American People and the Constitution of the United States of America – which apparently bothers you a great deal.
> He is a traitor..He should be tried for treason, convicted and….
You’re talking about George W. Bush and/or Richard B. Cheney, I presume?
Take it, with my compliments.
;)
I’m not ideologically opposed to television. I can always find some good science content or cartoons or fiction. But it’s not like I’m going to miss it much when it’s gone.
What are you, like 95?
Have some warm milk and take your teeth out, grandpa. It’s getting late.
Jane we got your back you are doing yeoman’s work for the rights of all of us…
Hope you find WORK Peg… Sending great vibes your way over the Internet Tubes…☺ ☺
Just wanted to chime in to thank kumari and golfinggary56 so much.
THANK YOU!!!!
You’ve proven what I’ve been saying for years. It’s the right that hates America.
I’ve never understood why though. Why do you hate America??
Because in AMERICA a person is INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty. Now read that slooooooowly, one word at a time. INNOCENT means… duh, innocent. Until PROVEN guilty. THAT’S AMERICA, and it’s ALWAYS been America.
Innocent until proven guilty is why people charged with a crime are released after the charges. Because they are INNOCENT until proven guilty. In fact, the burden is on the government to show holding them while awaiting trial is necessary, either because they’re a threat to society or because they’re a flight risk.
Also, innocent until proven guilty means you’re not PUNISHED until you’ve been found guilty. Manning’s treatment thus far can be called punishment, since it’s the same kind of punishment that’s handed out in prisons all the time when inmates violate the rules. They violate rules, they’re punishment is ISOLATION.
So we’re punishing a technically innocent person, againt everything America stands for, and you two not only support it, you want MORE.
So again, why do you hate America and what it stands for?
Well asked OFG!!
Thanks. I don’t know what it’s going to take but I found out today I should be lying about my age and my employment status on interviews.
Thanks, OldFatGuy. I thought maybe I’d blocked out kindergarten or something.
Has it just been a long time since we’ve been in school? Did they excise due process from US law while I wasn’t paying attention?
Say you are 46 and have been an independent contractor for two years. Line up people who can give you recommendations for the “independent contractor work”. One does what one must.
Good for you….clarity and truth….Nice.
Great work Jane all the way around.
It may not be so much that Mr. Morroco is interested in improving his own computer experience so much as degrading everyone else’s experience. Still your tips would help him if he only applied himself.
Is House a friend of Bradley Manning’s, or not? The more I hear, the less I think so. Considering that, what’s in it for House other than the Good Samaritan? Why would you need to “chauffeur” House in a car that had expired tags and your insurance was expired? If that was the case, why didn’t you report that yesterday when they “detained” you and David? Why would you need to chauffeur House at all? How did you hook up in the first place?
Per Kris’s link, Hacker means many things, one of which is what I claimed.
Because in AMERICA a person is INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty.
In the AMERICA of your DREAMS that’s the case.
Not bad. Thanks. :)
Wow, since your detainment this past weekend, you’re a New Hamsher.
And you’re no O’Bama…..
Thank you Jane… for your courage and that energizer bunny attitude.
I was upset yesterday, but the thing that upset me the most was the detainment. I always thought the state had to have some valid reason to detain a person, which is in effect kidnapping a person since they’re not free to leave, and I always assumed we had a right to know that reason. When a cop arrests you, he has to tell you what the charges are, correct? So if one is being detained, a form of arrest, one should be able to reasonably ask under what charges am I being detained. And it sounded to me like they had no valid reason.
So does “fire”, “fast”, “crown”, “drag”, “sow” and many other words in the English language. Context is what’s important here and I’m with Jane, it would certainly improve the conversation if you would make the effort to learn about a topic before leaping into it with both feet. Look at kumari and don’t let this happen to you…
Some Goat is trying to billy goat everyone into his corner.
Jane Sweet JANE.
When you cause the puss to come on board, you is winning.
We’ll lance it, cover your back and in the mean time admire your calm smile, measured delivery. So composed and informed on the TRUTH, you’re just the real deal.
THANKS YOU PATRIOT, JANE !
Isn’t that like a state in the new england area or something?
PS. Actually it got more interesting…..
Of course I could have done all that, but I figured since you all know him so well, you’d be able to answer it right off. Obviously, you don’t know him that well, but well enough to call him a hero. There are so many heroes these days. It doesn’t take much to be a hero anymore. Even Hackers can be heroes. What’s next, child molesters. How about sending a child molester to see Manning, and then I can listen to all of you tell me how child molesters aren’t necessarily criminals and I’m an old codger for thinking so.
Galileo said something to the effect “woe the country that needeth a hero.” Woe indeed.
You obviously didn’t listen to the definition of a hacker.
Thank Dog for that. Did you think I wanted to be?
So if today’s problem children could be stood in the corner for a little while, it would be interesting to see what some of the questions might be as regards the Manning situation and more broadly Obama’s war on whistleblowers.
The one that occurs to me is what is Obama so frightened to have revealed. That he used to smoke dope and snort coke. Don’t worry Barrack it’s cool with us. Must be something else.
You obviously didn’t complete your reading assignment.
I think you spun his name…so, maybe so.
Fixed it for ya.
B Fucking I Fucking N fucking G Fucking O, and not the O fucking us in our White House !
Outstanding !
Manning at OUR SOU, Obama.
What the fuck are you talking about?
We don’t have cable because we do not use our TV…and we do not miss it!
Are you friends with Erick, son of Erick?
He’s also fond of reminiscing about child molesters.
You’re a plant & have no interest in the argument. You never googled to find a biography, a cv?. Go away.
That’s what I said! :>)))
So play the “child molester” card. ***Mod Note: Personal insults are discouraged*** The war mongers and torturers you defend are the true TRAITORS. But speaking of “child molesters”, that would be DYNCORP.
Yes, Wikileaks revealed that US taxpayer dollars pay for Afghan “dancing boys”. So MBama you either approve of secret policies that support child molesters. Or you should be publicly grateful that Wikileaks exposed this corruption and depravity. If you are silent I assume you approve of your tax dollars supporting child molesting government contractors.
Nominated for best post of the year.
Thank you.
Well done, Jane. Thank you.
OT–
(excerpt “Leaks+Streisandeffect=freedom of speech,” Jan. 23, 2011)
Nicely done.
Okay, so I looked and, as I suspected, he appears to be the complimentary type of Hacker. Reviewing his resume, he’s taking a huge risk, and significantly limiting his options in regards to a career. I’m not saying that’s right, but it is how things work in this diabolical system. I assume he knew the risks and did it anyway, but why? Especially if he barely knew Manning? I’m trying to reconcile that because I’m a genuinely curious person.
x2
Maybe because it’s the right thing to do…
Thanks. Critical question for the (so-called) religious right. I hope more people start asking it.
Are you sad or happy that DYNCORP are government supported goons and child molesters?
A “genuinely curious person” would have researched all this stuff from the get-go. More likely, you’ve already reached your own conclusions and are just trying to bait people.
Do you really think IT pays taxes?? now way Jose!! All is Under the table so no one can figure out Who is really paying it to be here at our Lake…
New link above re. suicide watch/error
Jane (& Marcy), THANKS, Please keep on this and please push for contributions for his defense. How can Obama explain letting this happen on his watch to his kids? Shame on him.
“Typical Day for Manning”
18 december 2010
A Typical Day for PFC Bradley Manning
PFC Manning is currently being held in maximum custody. Since arriving at the Quantico Confinement Facility in July of 2010, he has been held under Prevention of Injury (POI) watch.
His cell is approximately six feet wide and twelve feet in length.
The cell has a bed, a drinking fountain, and a toilet.
The guards at the confinement facility are professional. At no time have they tried to bully, harass, or embarrass PFC Manning. Given the nature of their job, however, they do not engage in conversation with PFC Manning.
At 5:00 a.m. he is woken up (on weekends, he is allowed to sleep until 7:00 a.m.). Under the rules for the confinement facility, he is not allowed to sleep at anytime between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. If he attempts to sleep during those hours, he will be made to sit up or stand by the guards.
He is allowed to watch television during the day. The television stations are limited to the basic local stations. His access to the television ranges from 1 to 3 hours on weekdays to 3 to 6 hours on weekends.
He cannot see other inmates from his cell. He can occasionally hear other inmates talk. Due to being a pretrial confinement facility, inmates rarely stay at the facility for any length of time. Currently, there are no other inmates near his cell.
From 7:00 p.m. to 9:20 p.m., he is given correspondence time. He is given access to a pen and paper. He is allowed to write letters to family, friends, and his attorneys.
Each night, during his correspondence time, he is allowed to take a 15 to 20 minute shower.
On weekends and holidays, he is allowed to have approved visitors see him from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.
He is allowed to receive letters from those on his approved list and from his legal counsel. If he receives a letter from someone not on his approved list, he must sign a rejection form. The letter is then either returned to the sender or destroyed.
He is allowed to have any combination of up to 15 books or magazines. He must request the book or magazine by name. Once the book or magazine has been reviewed by the literary board at the confinement facility, and approved, he is allowed to have someone on his approved list send it to him. The person sending the book or magazine to him must do so through a publisher or an approved distributor such as Amazon. They are not allowed to mail the book or magazine directly to PFC Manning.
Due to being held on Prevention of Injury (POI) watch:
PFC Manning is held in his cell for approximately 23 hours a day.
The guards are required to check on PFC Manning every five minutes by asking him if he is okay. PFC Manning is required to respond in some affirmative manner. At night, if the guards cannot see PFC Manning clearly, because he has a blanket over his head or is curled up towards the wall, they will wake him in order to ensure he is okay.
He receives each of his meals in his cell.
He is not allowed to have a pillow or sheets. However, he is given access to two blankets and has recently been given a new mattress that has a built-in pillow.
He is not allowed to have any personal items in his cell.
He is only allowed to have one book or one magazine at any given time to read in his cell. The book or magazine is taken away from him at the end of the day before he goes to sleep.
He is prevented from exercising in his cell. If he attempts to do push-ups, sit-ups, or any other form of exercise he will be forced to stop.
He does receive one hour of “exercise” outside of his cell daily. He is taken to an empty room and only allowed to walk. PFC Manning normally just walks figure eights in the room for the entire hour. If he indicates that he no long feels like walking, he is immediately returned to his cell. [end quote]
When PFC Manning goes to sleep, he is required to strip down to his boxer shorts and surrender his clothing to the guards. His clothing is returned to him the next morning.
This, Ladies, Gentlemen and trolls, IS TORTURE of a US Soldier in a US Military Prison, for a person charged, but not tried under UCMJ! It could be you, or me or anyone you know or love.
…”It can’t happen here” F. Zappa.
Why does formatting disappear after editing?
It doesn’t, it just appears to until you refresh.
Thanks, befuddles me, so.
Thank you Jane for your continued efforts regarding Bradley Manning.
OldFatGuy: I hope you aren’t TOO old because we need to keep you around for many years in the future AND we need more people in this country with your insights and compassion for your fellow man. Thanks.
Phoenix Woman is upstairs!
Late Night: Slaughter on Tenth Avenue
In summary, there is no LEGAL authority for Bradley Manning to subjected to this abuse.
He is an American citizen, soldier and political prisoner.
The U.S. Constitution is “inoperative*.”
*see Ziegler, Ron
Jane, both you and David House have given superb interviews. It’s really beautiful.
Great job Jane. Thanks for your courage to stand up and do what is right regardless of the risk to yourself. People should be inspired by that.
The posters on here are right when they say that the Oath of a Servicemember is to the CONSTITUTION – not to the Commander in Chief or the State. We allow and even DEMAND that soldiers or officers disobey illegal orders or report them up the mast. We do not, theoretically, want a “just following orders” mentally among our uniformed personnel as a way to scapegoat the implementation of evil and the following of illegal orders.
But that is beside the point – Bradley Manning has not been charged or tried with any crime of any kind. Let alone Treason. He has admitted to nothing, and for all we know, is a scapegoat who has been falsely blamed for something he didn’t do.
Second – Daniel Ellsberg not only released the Vietnam Pentagon Papers, but he did so openly and admitted to it. He was never charged or tried for anything, despite being a paid employee of the Federal Government working for the DoD. So, legally, even IF Bradley Manning had released these documents (which he has not been charged with yet nor admitted to), then he STILL should not be tried for merely doing that.
Third – lets not all forget the case of Kenneth Lay. He was charged, tried, and CONVICTED of several counts of white collar crime. He was not, however, SENTENCED. He DIED in between the CONVICTION and the SENTENCING. Why is that significant? Because he officially died an INNOCENT man under the law. That is why his widow gets to keep ALL of the money he stole from Enron employees and shareholders. All of it. The Federal Government was trying to seize that money, and is now unable to. He was convicted by a jury of his peers. But he was not sentenced. And so, by technical default, he died innocent, and thus the funds are not deemed “tainted” or “seizable.”
Yet, in a pervese twist, Bradley Manning has not been charged (as Ken Lay was), tried (as Ken Lay was), or Convicted (as Ken Lay was), let alone sentenced (as Keny Lay wasn’t). But Bradley Manning is considered a convicted traitor already! Why?
The Media said so. It can be summed up in that one phrase. Americans have become boobs in front of toobs. They believe what the Ministry of Propoganda shoves into their faces. Everyday. Goebbels would be proud. American corporate media is nothing but a mouthpiece for the MIC and the Fascist government that has overtaken this land.
I applaud Bradley Manning, regardless of whether he did anything wrong or not, for the fact that he simply has become a symbol of calm defiance and resistance to this fascist regime. We should no more denigrate him than we would denigrate the German Resistance or the French Resistance to the Third Reich. Our Constitution has been defaced by Bushco and Obamaco now for at least the past decade. The oaths of all those under arms and in uniform are being challenged DAILY by this coup. We should show some mercy and some compassion to them for the daily struggle between following orders and honoring their oaths – for the two are increasingly becoming divergent goals.
For everyone who doubts my analysis of how easily brainwashed we all can be by the Corporate Media – just think about this nutcracker…
Lee Harvey Oswald died within 48 hours of being arrested, while being transported from Local to Federal custody. He died maintaining his innocence and demanding a lawyer. He was not indicted by a Grand Jury, he was not given a court date, no jury was empaneled, and no verdict was read or entered into the record. No trial occurred. No sentencing hearing. He died long before Ken Lay did in the process. But Ken Lay’s widow gets to keep the stolen funds. Yet we are all taught that Lee Harvey Oswald was guilty of the murder of JFK.
I’m not espousing any theories or alternate ideas here. I’m just stating the facts. He was never found legally guilty. No evidence was presented in a trial setting whereby he or his defense lawyers could rebut them. All “evidence” provided has been on Corporate Media by Corporate mouthpieces and MIC propogandists. The dead man has never been able to rebut any of it. So we are left with a hole in our history. Yet, I will be that everybody who reads this comment would have at one time or another, or yet may still believe that LHO was the “man who shot JFK.” Just like so many will believe that Bradley Manning is a “traitor who should be shot.”
The Media tells us what to think. And we tend to do think it. If Bradley Manning dies from “suicide” there will be no witness and no rebuttal. But he will have died a legally innocent man – but I promise that your children and grandchildren will grow up calling him guilty. All their teachers will teach that Lee Harvey Oswald and Bradley Manning were guilty men. And the two will be equally smeared in the minds of all Americans for generations. Because the Media said so.
Tell the lie enough, and people will believe it.
I agree with that, but you gotta charge this kid with the crime. Not charging him is against his rights. Charge him or let him go. Without being charged, his lawyer sees no evidence against him. I was not really paying attention to this story until yesterday. I was one of the hang em high one’s. But after looking into what is being done by the feds, I agree with the progressives on this one. Not many times do I agree, as I am Libertarian. I am calling mt congressman and Senators today. Message is simple. Charge him or let him go. From my perspective, the evidence is week, at best. The govt needs to show it’s hand. That is Manning”s right, and as a Libertarian war veteran, I will fight peacefully for his rights. It makes us all look bad when our govt does these things.
weak. oops.
Mars dragon: Brilliant post. I signed up just to say that.
I’m with Margaret (18)on this one. MSNBC no longer exists for me. And I’m dumping Comcast next week.
Left message with Rubio, got through to Nelson and was told the message would get to him, Rep. Nugent will get the message. The message is, charge this guy or let him go.
Thank you for being so articulate Jane.
An equal amount of respect and appreciation for David House.
Duh – regarding “they” – never?
In the spirit of Atrios, simple answers to questions…
Gibb’s is lying! Obama knows exactly what is going on at Gitmo. I suspect he ordered it!
