As of Thursday, it was unlikely that either the DREAM Act or DADT was going to come up for a vote in the Senate in this session. Talking Points Memo was reporting that the White House was “stalling the DADT vote” by insisting that the START nuclear reduction treaty have priority, which meant that there would not be enough time to bring it up this session.
“New START can pass next year; DADT can’t,” said Kevin Drum. “It’s that simple. Repeal of DADT should come first and New START should follow.”
Suddenly on Friday, however, “the Senate went its own way,” reported Dave Dayen. So what happened?
- Friday morning, Senate Republicans humiliated Reid and Durbin by pulling support for spending bill. As a face saving measure, Reid got them to allow a vote on DADT and DREAM Act. Good news for both DADT and DREAM activists. But because of their poor negotiating skills, the Democrats have now given the GOP both the massive tax cuts they wanted AND the ability to control funding of the government.
- The White House knows they’re in trouble with liberals over the tax cut deal. They’re reaching out to make amends with the AFL-CIO’s Richard Trumka, the Steelworker’s Leo Gerard, AFT’s Randi Weingarten, and SEIU’s Mary Kay Henry. Unfortunately, making amends means forcing them to sit in a room with traitor Hilda Solis, who is trying to destroy them by pushing through Obama’s NAFTA-Style Korea Free Trade Deal, and their personal labor Chia Pet, the UAW’s Bob King.
- Even Joe Lieberman was tweaking both Reid and Obama over the failure of DADT to be taken up this year. Lieberman seems to want to use DADT as a way to restore his street cred with liberals in anticipation of a tough 2012 Senate race.
- On Friday, Lieberman actually started whipping on the vote, something that actually hadn’t been done before. As Jon Walker notes, that’s what “fierce advocacy” actually looks like.
- If the DADT repeal didn’t come up, everyone from HRC to Joe Manchin to yours truly was saying that Obama had the power to end himself. The White House didn’t want to have to take that step, but they might have been forced to in order to get the issue out of the headlines. The last thing Obama wants is to be heckled by DADT activists on the campaign stump. And given the choice between a Presidential signing statement and a congressional repeal, the Department of Defense would choose the latter. Congressional repeal gives them time to implement the policy change more gradually, and less fear that another administration will come in and change course.
- At this point, everyone just wants a win, and DADT looks like the best chance they’ve got.
To everyone who worked hard to pass the DADT repeal: congratulations. Your willingness to never take “no” for an answer, to make things extremely uncomfortable for those in power, and to work hard at deligitimizing veal pen gatekeepers who stood in the way of your objective should be a model for all activists.
Sadly, the DREAM Act looks like it will fall short of the 60 votes needed for cloture. If that happens it’s a tragedy, because the DREAM activists have also worked extremely hard at organizing around the issue. I respect them all tremendously.

About FDL Action
Ugh, Lindsey Graham from the floor:
“TO THE “DREAM” ACT, I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM FOR MANY YEARS. SENATOR DURBIN AND I HAVE TALKED ABOUT HOW TO MAKE THE “DREAM” ACT PART OF COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM. TO THOSE WHO HAVE COME TO MY OFFICE — YOU’RE ALWAYS WELCOME TO COME BUT YOU’RE WASTING YOUR TIME. WE’RE NOT GOING TO PASS THE “DREAM” ACT OR ANY OTHER LEGALIZATION PROGRAM UNTIL WE SECURE OUR BORDERS. IT WILL NEVER BE DONE STANDS ALONE. IT HAS TO BE PART OF COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM.
My prediction: NEITHER will pass. And WHAT a giant sucking “surpise” that will be.
Lousy sh*ts… Kabuki Show from start to finish. My loathing for these gutless corporate whores knows no bounds.
Mendacity or incompetence? Opinions differ, but either way it’ll be hard to motivate the base.
Another day, another sell-out.
Certainly mendacity and incompetence play a role, but the fundamental reason liberal policy has a difficult time becoming law is this.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/145271/Conservatives-Continue-Outnumber-Moderates-2010.aspx
With majorities in the House and Senate, a president who really wants to fight for something will get it.
(Gee, where was I just reading about that?)
Now, we’ll never know what might have been.
The reason liberal policy has a difficult time becoming law is when Democratic lawmakers buy into the conservative spin hook, line and sinker.
Sen. Tester & Baucus’ excuse for voting No on the DREAM act: They are against “amnesty”. Gee where did I hear that. Oh wait – Faux Noise.
Duh!
Ditto.
Also, after that bail-and-leave-the-Big-Dog-in-charge episode (lampooned here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdMMzwMqqLQ ), Obama has proven that he deserves to be heckled at every opportunity.
i’m sort of hungover this morning, so watching the Kabuki is fun. but it’s still Kabuki.
That episode should also put an end to the fantasy that there was or is any meaningful difference between Obama and the Clintons in terms of policy. Remember, Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich had worked out a deal to destroy Social Security, and were on the verge of implementing it when Monica Lewinsky intervened.
Yes. I remember the day well. Folks didn’t know about the secret deal with Newt and launched an email campaign to save Clinton’s derriere. That e-mail effort launched MoveOn.Org.
Obama’s pawn-age sure makes it clear the Clinton-istas totally own him, but, in my estimation, the even bigger picture underscored is the administrations have all been continuations of Nixon’s if Kissinger is making victory laps at the State Department.
Link.
Time for a world-wide stoppage of payments to BoA FOR ALL ACCOUNTS.
Does Berlusconi have any “interns” we can borrow?
Passage of DADT repeal is awesome. Any time civil rights are expanded, it’s a good thing. Unfortunately, getting a win for a specific special interest group at the expense of legislation that affects all of us (like the spending bill) is bad policy and politics.
This is just a bone to keep the progressives pacified. If you consider the very small number of people that DADT repeal actually effects, giving up control of spending priorities to the Rethugs to get it is probably too high a price to pay.
Guess BoA is all upset about being sued by Arizona and Nevada (link: news.firedoglake.com/2010/12/16/the-roundup-261 ).
Silver … see MaxKeiser.Com.
It cannot be seriously suggested that Lieberman thinks any role he plays in repealing dadt would help him in a re-election bid. Sadly dadt is simply another of the Clintons’ snafus, an embarassment to this country. Hopefully, dadt will be repealed today but it is just as important to repeal most of what the Clintons “did” starting with the repeal of the repeal of Glass Steagall (sP) and repeal of the Communications Act of 1996.
I agree but as always cling to the slim hope that Dems may inadvertantly do the right thing.
DADT: 63/33!
Yay!
I’ve never been a fan of the three ring clown act. I’d like politics to be boringly functional and effective again and the money being burned on the theatrics that strokes these buffoons’ egos to be diverted into solving the actual problems this country has.
At least we’ll get a vote on DADT.
Politics has always been a circus. The difference now is that corporations have purchased all the tickets and voters are left outside the big tent standing in steaming piles of elephant and donkey dung.
Ahh, the great moral issue of our times: will GLBTs be given their “equality, liberty and freedom” by being open and equal partners in the endless bloody wars of empire. Forget torture, the murder of millions of non combatants worldwide, wars based on lies, national financial bankruptcy by Wall Street and Pentagon warriors, endless violations of domestic and international law. The great issue is will GLBT people get their share of the warfare action and thus have the bloody hands to show their loyalty to the empire and the rulers. And then once this great moral goal is achieved , do take up children’s liberation and freedom. After all, with today’s drone technology, and children’s skill with video games, it is possible to bring warriorship right into the comfy living room of Mr. and Mrs. Amerikka. “Look Daddy, Jimmy just blew up a bunch of mud houses on that mountain side and people and kids are running and screaming and falling down. Wow, this is a lot more fun than those old fake games we used to play. Betcha, a Congressman and a guy with a fancy uniform will show up soon and give Jimmy some ribbons and medals.” So now let’s all work hard to make sure that everyone can do their patriotic part for empire and the fatherland. Amerika uber alles!!

(excerpt from “New study shows increases in women and racial/ethnic minorities among DADT discharges,” Sept. 20, 2010).
I have given up on prognosticating floor votes in Congress after my pathetically wrong call about what the House would do on the Obama-Republican taxcut bonuses deal.
It is astounding to see DADT repeal clear cloture with three votes to spare. Many plausible theories have been tossed out here to explain why DADT will be repealed, IF it is finally repealed (which I am NOT predicting). Assuming DADT is repealed, progressives can claim some credit for our weeks-long whipping against the corrupt White House taxcut bonuses deal. The White House’s betrayal of the base to pay off the oligarchs meant that the White House had used up its quota of betrayals for this session of Congress. Betrayal on DADT would be one betrayal too many.
Good heavens! A hallelujah moment. And you say, olgold, that this is not a progressive or liberal era?
The political class has seen the light.
Truth and reason shall now flourish and all is “right” with the world.
Seriously, to all who have fought for this moment, this victory, my congratulations and most sincere thanks.
It offers food for thought, even if it is rather thin gruel.
And, doubtless, while not making up for the level of treachery and deceit this nation has experienced these last twelve years, it does suggest that the weight of the majority’s wishes, when such wishes are humane and just, even if in a somewhat twisted sort of way … does, finally, filter through to Congress, and that august body bows to trhe reality of the times and the needs of the people.
Equality on the battlefield may well lead to equality and opportunity further from that particular field.
I look forward to the day when we may have a gay or lesbian President, provided that they care about more than merely money and power …
DW
joe manchin was a no show for DADT and Dream act votes. Mcconnell has a new go to guy.
mccain was a pathetic mean old man in the final arguments.
Let’s hope reid puts the 9/11 Responders bill up for a vote.
Lindsey(come out of the closet)Graham is a horses ass.
Fucking politics as usual, nothing changes. I can’t wait to see the expression on the Tea Partiers faces when they realize they’ve been had.
Those on the left know what it’s like.
I have been predicting this for quite a while. And, as late as last Tuesday, seemed to be the only one here who thought it would pass.
http://fdlaction.firedoglake.com/2010/12/14/reid-urging-lieberman-to-run-in-2012/#comment-133864
The Senate invokes cloture on DADT 63-33. The people are HuffPo are being revolting. Heaping praise on the person who had the least to do with it: Obama. And very few of them seem to know the difference between test votes, cloture and legislative votes.
With the loss of the Dream Act we will find out who the racists are. With the DADT we’re about to find out who the bigots and homophobes are. Many will be on both lists.
Wow… you’re way more tolerant & patient than I am (no offense).
I got over feeling betrayed a long time ago and moved into realizing that the fed govt (at least) is a completely owned subsidiary of USACorp, Inc. There is absolutely *nothing* that these corporate whores do, where they act on behalf of the average citizen. Absolutely everything they do inures to the benefit somehow of the wealthy elite. Whatever they want, goes.
IF DADT passes, it’s because the elite perceive a benefit. Period.
My bet: DADT will NOT pass. Don’t count on it, then you won’t be disappointed (or feel fooled again). Just saying….
Yes, oldgold.
It is interesting to note that the percentage of American citizens that came, ultimately, to the position that gays and lesbians should not be discriminated against in the militay, also oppose, by almost the same percentages, the current wars.
Indeed, oldglod, you are among us.
Ending the wars would be an even better thing, than repealling DADT, don’t you think?
What odds do you place on THAT happy outcome, oldgold.
Is it “doable” while Barack is in office?
DW
A step in the right direction for sure.
But Obama? WTF?
Ben Nelson is both, the bigoted asshole.
oldgold as usual you are wrong
to capture independent votes phony dems do the following!
Obama lied to get elected! (he did not campaign on being the next bush fact)
Once elected Obama attacked the people who got him elected.
Obama then pursues a republican agenda
1. bob dole health care bill
2. hoover economic policies
3. bush tax cuts
next something mythical happens
Independents love Obama, so independents and moderates must love LIARS
see oldgold no need to read a poll
Obama is just a liar!
the reason the senate bailed on the WH is simple
23 democrats senators want to get re-elected, and they know we are going to start playing KABUKI games with their careers)
Obama is done! :)
Yeah, that’s what I said…
I’ll bet Obama is cursing the fact that when it reaches his desk he’ll be forced to sign it, you know in his little Republican heart he doesn’t like teh gay.
Politics
Obama killed so much – and now the DADT super majority overcoming McCain with about zero effort by Obama prior to last 48 hours is supposed to make us admire his wisdom and humanity and Saintliness.
And Mainstream media is lined up to sell the above narrative.
In part, it is a liberal victory! But, primarily what it is, as it almost always is when liberal policies are enacted into law, is a successful partenering-up with moderates to form a majority. This is why I continue to argue for and work at building political bridges between liberals and moderates.
I gave up on making those kinds of bets. Just this week, after being hopelessly wrong about how the House could defeat the taxcut bonuses deal by letting the clock run out.
Also, I’m with you on the longer term view, but I was measuring the betrayals just in the past two years (just this Congress). Betrayal on DADT might break the camel’s back.
As you may recall, I am strongly opposed to Obama’s policy in Afghanistan.
Yep. Bet his advisers are hunkered down, trying to figure a way to veto it or stall it forever
And the pundits in their infinite wisdom claim that Obama will not lose his base come next election, that we will all come slinky back to Obama because he’s the best the left will ever get.
What bullshit.
I hope you are wrong. That would truly mean that Obama has no political sense at all. We already know that he has no principles.
Baloney!
Well Thank goodness Obama @ Co. needed a political reason to get DADT through the Senate at the eleventh hour before the holiday break. We wouldn’t actually want the President and Dems fighting for a policy because they said they would and it’s what their party was suppose to be taking on.
God forbid!
Leave Obama aloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooone!
Spot on comment
The gain is the gay speakers of Arabic and other Islamic touched languages who are needed for the NSA/CIA/Military effort.
Besides, in a Voluntary military, tossing 15000 volunteers that are proven in performance is expensive.
On the other hand we are killing educated person jobs via exporting them to lowest wage areas – so DREAM act that ups college graduation just complicates the planned change of the US to a 3rd world country. Besides we need more H1 visas and fewer tariffs and non-tariff barriers (even as North Korea’ new treaty puts auto sales from the US on a 25000 each for GM and Ford basis via special import safety laws) – right?
yup.
Only Afghanistsan?
I was under the impression, which I recalled in my comment @33, oldgold, that you opposed BOTH wars.
Do you wish to correct that impression?
Will either war end while Obama is in office?
Any speculations, oldgold?
DW
oldgold? enough already!!!
moderates are mythical creatures that only exist in fantasy land!
why is it the majority of americans like our ideas?
public option
ending wars
protecting Social Security
you must deal with the fact that the black guy in the WH is a LIAR!!!
until you deal with this fact, cool it with the crazy comments
the last 20 months taught progressive one simple fact! we have a bunch of clowns in DC calling themselves DEMS who are really republicans
help is on the way in 2012
Bold Liberals are coming!
Eventually the WH will conclude signing is the path of least resistance. Obama hates to be seen taking a stand though, especially if it’s in favor of something as controversial as ceding to a group of oppressed Americans a fundamental right they should have had all along.
That explains why Obama has done the following:
Signed the Matthew Shephard Act into law.
Ended the 22 year old HIV travel ban.
Issued memorandum to expand the rights of LBGT people in regards to medical rights.
Extended federal benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees.
And, now will sign a bill ending DADT!
Boxer on floor right now on C-SPAN2 supporting repeal.
olgold = Joe Klein. What do I win?
But what has he done to repeal or limit damage from Defense of Marriage Act? (Don’t know if he was in any federal elected office when it was passed but he was in Senate for two years when Dems held majority and has held WH for two years.)
but, but, we wouldn’t say Margaret=Peggy Noonan!
Those signings all took GREAT courage, right?
Weak tea, oldgold, eeky weaky tea.
Let us return to the question of whether the wars will end on Obama’s “watch”, oldgold, as your silence on THAT question, like Obama’s Excuses, wears a wee bit thin.
DW
Obama also done the following!
1st Obama endorses the Bush agenda of spying on and killing americans
2nd Obama attacks Unions (the F! the UAW moment screams republican)
3rd Obama double downs on Bush Wars, (now they are Obama wars)
4th Obama attacks Teacher Unions (teacher unions now hate OBAMA)
5th Obama does not attack the Banks? he bails them out? (sorta like what the GOP does)
6th Obama passes the Bob Dole Health Care Bill (Bob Dole is a republican)
7th Obama kills the Public Option
8Th Obama kills Drug Importation
9Th Obama APPOINTS an insurance executive to manage his health care Bill
10th Obama does not APPOINT Dawn Johnsen
11th Obama hand picks the cat food commission to destroy Social Security
12th Obama supports Blanche Lincoln, a candidate who hates Unions, and has no chance of winning
13 Guantanomo still open for business
14.Patriot Act renewed
15. renditions continue
16. Bernanke reappointed
17. Americans targeted for assassination
18 Obama is all for sending more USA jobs off shore
19 Obama is for tax cuts for the RICH!
20. Obama and the TSA porno Scandal
21 Obama freezes federal wages for 2 years
22. OBAMA TARP Funds for Legal Services for Foreclosure Victims Blocked By Treasury
23. Obama lowers estate tax for the rich
24. Obama tax bill of 2010 GUTS Social Security
25. Obama wants WikiLeaks Assange charged with espionage.
oldgold this is what we call the OBAMA NECKLACE, and we are going to give this OBAMA NECKLACE to every DEM in CONGRESS!!!
NOTHING = PELOSI PASSING 400 BILLS AND HARRY REID KILLING 400 BILLS
BOLD LIBERALS ARE NEEDED IN DC, COMING 2012
Well that would be because I have about as much in common with Peggy Noonan as potato chips have in common with coronal mass ejections.
You win a new civil liberty.
For that we should all be happy.
Now, if it makes you happy calling me names, which it appears you do – go for it.
No. As far as DOMA and DADT, the only thing Obama has done about either so far is to defend them in court. I’ll congratulate him if he signs a forthcoming repeal. Until then, I’m not going to hold my breath.
Teddy had list of further procedures and delays until DADT repeal becomes a reality, even if Senate votes to repeal it today and preznit finally signs repeal bill.
heehee. sounds kinda dirty “mass ejections”
Oh? Will it? Will it restore the benefits that were stripped from me in 1991? I think not. Maybe calling you Joe Klein was out of line and I apologize for it but some days you sound like his intellectual twin.
Obama believes Ls and Gs are equal to 2/3 of a heterosexual. It takes to two to marry, so any L or G couple comes up 2/3 short. Bs are begrudgingly granted equal status, provided they only attempt to marry a person of the opposite gender. Ts are too confusing and the president thinks it’s best to simply ignore them.
exactly. He has forced his DOJ to defend all of the most scurrilous indefensible bullshit the country has ever been burdened with. Let’s not even start with items 1, 3, 17 & 25 in jedi’s list @60.
has a lot to do with the black churches he decided to bring up his children in
And has. DADT repeal doesn’t address them at all.
No, unfortunately it will not undo the injustice you suffered in 1991.
But, it will prevent it from happening to others. For the former I am sorry and for the latter I am thankful.
Sadly, equality for Ts seems to be the point at which a steep uphill climb becomes a vertical cliff face.
This is no country for immigrants or dreamers of any kind. All anyone can do is get rich, stomp on those climbing up the ladder from below, and maybe get the hell out of if you can. Too bad there isn’t anywhere to go. :-)
Too many gays, especially gay men are alright with T discrimination. Ask John Aravosis.
Let us stand on your shoulders, when we get to the top we’ll give you a hand up… promise.
That “new” civil liberty was not “won”, it is merely no longer supressed … as much.
From the very beginning of this nation, oldgold, that “new civil liberty”, as YOU term it, was and should have been an unalienable right.
Doubtless you consider not being a slave to be a “new civil right”?
Perhaps, that particular “right” needs to be reaffirmed?
DW
DREAM was a nightmare and deserved defeat.
Exactly.
while we are watching possible victory for hundreds of thousands of gays & lesbians in uniform, we might want to express our solidarity with the grief of hundreds of thousands of young Americans who just lost all hope of equality with Senate failure to invoke cloture on DREAM act.
I usually hate WaPo, but this piece has stunning information on yet another Obama betrayal.
This is exactly why I voted for the guy. If he keeps this up I’ve vote for him in 2012.
Obama can’t be bothered with helping actual people. He’s do busy helping patrons and future employers and being all bipartisany.
Douche.
You seem to enjoy sophistry. That is fine by me. Go with it.
You reveal nothing about yourself, olgold, and, when you inadvertantly do reveal your deeper motivations, you remove the comment.
Your ostensible purpose is, apparently, to plead the merits of a decidedly deadly incrementalism which you term “pragmatic” and claim is all that we may reasonablly ever hope for.
OldFatGuy has definitely got your number, oldgold, and, apparently, your deliberate intent is to disable democratic thinking and collective action, all under the damnable pretense of “protecting” us from failure or something worse.
That “something worse” is here, now, and it goes by the name of Barack Obama and the Democratic Party which has sold this nation out, principle, rule of law, and Constitution … and your job, oldgold is to try to insure that others remain confused and powerless.
And you accuse me of “sophistry”?
You well know the definition of sophistry right, oldgold, “…clever and subtle … but perhaps misleading … reasoning”.
You do not respond in straight forward fashion to any reasonable query, but instead engage in claims that others are playing word games with you and calling you names.
I ask you if the wars will end during Obama’s term in office and you prattle on about “new” civil rights …
In all the time you have commented here, what do any of us know of YOUR life, your dreams, your personal hopes, or the aspects of your personal reality?
How can that be?
Unless you want it that way.
Some people are very private, and reveal little about themselves, for any number of reasons, however:
The net effect is to convince many of us that you are paid to play, that your “talking points” are too glib and cunnungly manufactured to obscure and discourage, that, somehow, you’ve no skin in anything that others here face daily, that you are very comfortable with what is going on, in this nation and around the world.

DADT and DREAM were going to be voted on this session no matter what. Harry Reid was going to keep people past Christmas if he had to.
Dream on DREAM is dead.
DADT should pass, it’s immoral enough to tickle a lot of politicians.
Food for thought but none for the table. For every “may”, there is an equal “may not”. And have you ever actually known any “filthy rich” gay people? Speaking from personal experience, they are among the worst human beings I’ve ever encountered.
Can we replace Peggy Noonan with Margaret? I mean literally, in “real life”!
As always (In the US) the golden rule prevails. He who has the gold makes the rules.
Bizarre, a black family going to a black church. Must be a conspiracy in there
someplace huh?
