He’s the least popular man in the Senate with the public: only 24% of Connecticut voters say they’d vote for him again. His sheer bottom-scraping numbers are causing likely opponents to drool at the thought of challenging him. But in the House of Lords, they love him. Politico reports “Senior Democrats” are urging Joe Lieberman to run again:
Along with other senior Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is quietly urging the Connecticut lawmaker to run for a fifth Senate term in 2012 — and to stick with the Democratic side of the aisle.
[]
He became even more alienated from his former party when he backed Republican Sen. John McCain in the 2008 presidential election. And it didn’t help his relationship with the left when he announced his opposition to the public option in the health care bill, even though he ultimately backed the plan that cleared Congress.
But while Lieberman has aligned with Republicans on national security, he’s maintained a fairly liberal voting record on other domestic issues – and he’s now leading the fight for gays to serve openly in the military – so he would be one of the most liberal Republicans in the Senate if he switched parties.
Blah blah, Joe sucks, blah blah. I’ve written it a hundred times, fill in the blanks with your favorite “I hate Joe Lieberman” story.
But please tell me nobody fell for the DADT flim-flam. Joe Lieberman works for the Department of Defense. They did not want “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repealed. The surest sign of that was when James Amos, Obama’s pick to lead the Marine Corps, said he opposed repealing DADT now. He would never have done that to his Commander in Chief without permission. It was an unmistakeable dog whistle to anyone who knew what they were listening for: the White House did not want this. And, clearly they don’t. Obama has the authority to make it happen if he wants. And you don’t see him waving that Presidential pen around, looking for a signing statement.
And so Lieberman was picked to run the show in the Senate. Know why so many Republicans piped up and said they’d support ending DADT? ‘Cos they knew they’d never have to take a vote. Lieberman put on a fine show, replete with press conferences and breathless announcements, then he and Susan Collins went through a superb theatrical moment as the whole thing melted down in “procedural issues” (cough).
It’s Harry Reid’s specialty.
I wanted to be wrong this time, to think there was a piece of decency in the guy, but it was a pretty sure signal that the whole thing was going to explode when Lieberman was designated to run point. Obama never reached out to Joe Manchin at any time (the one Democratic “no” vote), which one assumes he would have done if they were actually serious about passing it.
Lieberman is no hero, and he’s not going to champion DADT repeal through the Senate. Please don’t kick that football. You’ll be stuck in the trap of the Senate procedural flim-flam until you realize that the Senate Majority Leader has all kinds of tricks at his disposal that he uses to get what he wants, especially if he’s got the votes. He got what he wanted. Lieberman was just the half-time show, there to make sure everyone thought they might actually get something — before he stuck it to the liberals once again.

About FDL Action
Jane\’s analysis is as usual spot on. But I do wonder about this:
Like Netanyahu and many others, the brass saw early on that O is a doormat.
They can take whatever policy stands they want with impunity.
McChrystal was only forced out when he violated the Village Rules.
That Politico “article” has a lot of Rs also encouraging Short Ride to run again – and then switch to caucusing with them.
Although if he does run and win, he will probably stay with the Dem caucus – he’s the best R mole in the Dem caucus, House or Senate, since Phil Gramm was a Dem in the House
Jane, Wish you could teach composition/writing classes. What a fine job you do with the language….of course, it helps that you have great ideas.
That’s funny Jane, You must be a huge optimist, considering their record. The only possible way a vote on DADT will will ever happen is if Obama and Reid can get enough villans to play the part. Is there any issue in which they won’t treat like a game?
Um, when was the last time Lieberman actually ran as a Democrat?
Knowing what an opportunistic asshole Lieberman is, it doesn’t really matter what he “runs as.” He’ll caucus with whichever party is in the majority [in 2012, that looks to be the Republicans], and they’ll reward him with a committee chairmanship.
I can’t see Lieberman valuing his role as mole in the Dem. caucus over a chairmanship under the Repubs.
Jeeze, is Reid so stupid he can’t see this?
He is unelectable. I hope he does run as he’ll lose miserably.
Yeah, I think this is actually Markos’ greatest electoral dream–the chance to end this tool’s career
Obama? Obama? Obama?
again very clumsy, Obama never wanted DADT to pass who knew?
the good news Obama says in 2012 he will run to end DADT
just like in 2012 Obama is going to run to end the BUSH TAX CUTS.
don’t you love OBAMA :)
Lieberman is always a good soldier!
Do you suppose Joe already has some cushy job awaiting him? Sorta like the guy from Indiana.
What’s the problem? I just love Joe…
Anyone need more proof that the Democratic Party is flaccid, corrupt, and an obstacle to progress? Here it is. The sooner this party disappears, the better.
When one of HoJo’s grandchildren lies bleeding out from an IED in Afghanistan or Iraq, I’ll begin to believe all the crap he sells about the nescessity of those misbegotten wars.
If Harry Reid is urging to Lieberfuck to run again, then sure as The Flying Spaghetti Monster made little red meatballs I’ll be donating to any Democrat who runs against him in CT. But as hologram says up-thread, (I hope) he’s unelectable after his shenanigans of the last six years. I imagine there are a few Katrina survivors who might be happy to help see him unseated too…
This would be news if Reid was showing some awareness or political acumen for a change and urging Lieberman to stay out of the race.
Um, when was the last time Lieberman actually ran as a Democrat?
It is no longer necessary to “run as a Democrat.” You can run as a Republican, so long as you have a (D) after your name.
Oh yeah.
Not to dabble in a bit of trivia but when the hell was that photo taken of Mealy-Mouthed Joe? It had to be decades ago.
Definitely. Almost certainly with health insurance
providerrip off company.Reid needs a full rotating villains cast. Of course he wants Lieberman to run. It will be fascinating watching what the party does wrt to their actual candidate in the race.
What must Droopy do in order for intelligent people to vote for him?

I hope that’s snark. Either that or you have him confused with Droopy.
I’m still astounded that Reid and Pelosi are still where they are…
Moi…snark?
It is. He can’t run as a Democrat. And do you think Linda McMahon(or any other “real” GOP’er) will resist from primarying him if he tries to run as a GOP’er? And he doesn’t even have the Connecticut for Lieberman line anymore either.
Too late. I fell for the flim flam. But I sure do appreciate this eyeopener. Guess the next time a member of the Brass Band says something that I think O’bama should fire him for I’ll know that he is not out of line but quoting the party line.
Thankfully, I don’t think CT Democrats will split their vote in ’12.
jane, you’ve been right every single time you called obama’s bluff
you were right when you said he did not want the public option and was campaigning against it, you were right when you said he was campaigning to continue the bush asset transfer of middle class funds to the wealthy
you are right about this
and you actually make it more difficult for obama then repeal actually is, all he has to do is refuse challenging the judges decision declaring it unconstitutional, that takes no action on his part what so ever
he has to actively pursue keeping dadt in order for it to remain
I wonder what their reaction is everytime someone on staff reads that you have this magot’s number
It’s certainly one of my electoral dreams. I thought we had a chance in 06 with Lamont but the voters in CT didn’t see it our way.
Feel the Joementum….it burns…
One thing about Obama, he’s got all those promises he made in 08 to use all over again in 12. His biggest problem is that he’s already sprung that trap. In 2012 he’s liable to break a couple fingers trying to reset it.
That might be a urinary tract infection. Certainly they’ve got a lot in common.
puke! i saw that blow dried asshole on the absurdly Third – way – Freindly- PBS hype hour, during the nightly 10 minute “Sell the latest lie” segment,(in this case it was the the obama tax cuts) which “OF COURSE we need”. We have a rotten and corrupt government. I wish the the tea baggers were capable of seeing the whole picture. Our Government IS abusive and crooked, but mostly because they take their money and orders from the capitalist ruling class.
that’s really funny about obama, he is actually telling us he is going to use us again when he campaigns for another 4 years, I guess he doesn’t know that chicken doesn’t fly, we know he used us the first time and we ain’t bitin agin
how’s that saying go?
“fool me once, shame on me
fool me twice….
errr…
errr…
CAN’T BE FOOLED AGIN”
great saying that
The membership in the club is ultimately more important than anything else. No one, Dem or Republican, wanted to see Lieberman actually lose to the far more progressive Ned Lamont. The Senate is all about entrenchment and it is anathema to all of them if the people start trying to assert their will.
(you’re gonna hate me for this one, sorry but I am compelled)
would that make him a a proponent of the of the theory of urinary executive?
(ugg)
LOL – still laughing…
there’s got to be a pill or a shot for that kind of thing.
Ding! Ding! Ding! And we have a winner!
Ugh Indeed! But nice one!
I forgot all about Joe being up for re-election in 2 years. I’m excited now because watching him lose will be the one thing to look forward to in 2 years.
I would say watching him be humiliated, but Joe has no shame and thus no capacity for humiliation.
Let’s see: pyridium for urinary infection and pyrlieberdem for Droopy.
Obama won’t even break a fingernail, SD, he’s got Bubba and Howard Dean to shill for him … and if Reid is “for” Lieberman, then he must be for Lieberman’s star pupil, as well.
The new Democratic chant, “Break a sweat! – reset!, reset! We’re the best you’ll ever get …”
;~DW
My memory is that during the hcr debate Lieberman lost the support of even the Connecticut for Lieberman Party.
What chance does he have of winning in 2012?
OT: The band I play in recently opened a show for a Denver Funk Band called
http://www.liebermonster.com/
and they were really good. Too funny.
yep. think about it – she called the play on SS in 02/09(!) amidst the Inaugural afterglow so many of us were feeling
I dunno about that. Short Ride’s ego will take quite the hit if he loses. Hopefully it’ll make him pack his bags and move to Tel Aviv, where he can suck Yisrael Beiteinu and Likud dicks.
Obama and Reid have effectively destroyed the Democratic Party for decades to come. Trotting forth this ass in a suit as the best democrats have to offer would just be additional humilitation, shame, and embarrassment. I guess they’ve never been told that when the horse is dead, stop beating it.
I do not agree with this analysis.
Maybe this what “Droopy” means. The song always comes into my head when I think of joe, but then, I’m from Connecticut and supported Ned Lamont:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX380vS_Mzs
Would you care to elaborate on that?
I think the Democratic Party was destroyed in the years just before Obama and Reid took their places for the climatic clusterfucking of the American people.
But, yes. They totally destroyed their opportunity to turn it around and gain the next generation’s loyalty for the Democratic Party.
We want representative democracy, and all we get is more Kabuki Theater politics. Congress is now operating to contravene the will of the people on issue after issue. If you throw the bums out, there are many more bums ready to take their places.
The First Republic is dead.
Words we’ll be hearing from Barack Obama in 2012?
*from WKRP, if you didn’t know.
Local Dem Party organizations have to purge themselves of the conservaDems who’ve taken over the leadership positions. It took the Dems in Pinellas County 4 years to accomplish that. Once the conservaDems are driven out the local parties can put real progressives on the ballot.
Totally OT but:
Nixon had only one big ball,
Reagan had two but they were small.
Clinton’s were intermittent,
But Obama has no balls at all.
That’s a great episode.
You’re right, Clinton did the party no favors. Yet Obama was able to get elected, even tho he did lie through his goddamn teeth.
No one will believe a democrat for years to come. The young generation is probably lost for good.
Why does the local Democratic Party organization in TN-05 want DINOcrat Jim Cooper on the ballot election after election?
It’s a heavily Democratic district. A real Democrat would win there. Instead, they get to choose between Jim Cooper and the other Republican.
this what hurts the most
The above was meant for Knoxville @ 49. Sorry.
Sure looks like Lieberman is about to come out in the next Congress. And Reid doesn’t want to lose another member of his caucus. What are the implications on committee assignments if Lieberman switches? Has McConnell made a promise that Lieberman will be ranking member? Lieberman could wait in the minority for two years if Republicans sweep the Senate in 2012. Or is that what Reid’s promised for Lieberman’s cover on DADT repeal? Or other legislative issues.
And only Politico could call Lieberman liberal on domestic issues.
Gee, Harry, how can we ever thank you (and Obama) for doing political rehab on this asshole, after he campaigned for John McCain?
Too bad that your (and Obama’s) broadminded forgiveness doesn’t include the progressives who helped give your sorry asses that historic win in 2008, who won’t clap louder, now that you’re shitting on us twice a week.
thank you, Jane. i have been having a hard time at some of my gaii blogs over Joe’s “fabulous” support of repealing DADT. no, it doesn’t make up for all the other ways he blows goats. it’s nice when someone like yourself points that out, i’ll be linking to this post.
And the dirty fucking hippies will get the blame for that too. If only we had just cheered louder.
Obama’s campaign was partly based on reversing the results from Clinton’s experiment with neoliberalism, no? Not explicitly, but it was based on a recognition that the country had gone in the wrong direction and needed a course correction.
Obama totally turned off the young generation. Something tells me that he’s preparing for a new round of lofty bullshit come 2011 and 2012, which A) won’t have nearly the same success as 2008, and B) just makes it that much harder for progressives and liberals to cut through the noise.
Why ask me? Ask the Executive Committee/Board of the local Party. Get involved and help take over the local organization.
I quit NARAL due to their reflexive support of Lieberman in 2006 and it wasn’t until 2010 when they finally decided that Short Ride wasn’t on their side after all. Idiots.
Why did the national Dems want Ed Case instead of Hanabusa in HI-01? It’s because they thought he would be more likely to reflexively support the national Democratic agenda of selling out the poor and middle class. Democrats are convinced that no matter what they do, no matter how right wing they become, we will always fear the Republicans more than we loath the Democrats. That’s not true for me anymore and I can’t be the only one getting there.
poor oldnslow has had to listen to this for months -
I kept going back to Obama’s standing (and singular) m.o. – advocating incremental, weak tea policies as subterfuge to shift yet more wealth upward -
the MOTU’s had no dog in the DADT fight – leaving me to believe the only reason it hasn’t been passed already is because Obama is personally against repeal – Liebushman’s jumping in as point guy pretty much confirmed that the game was afoot
We were supposed to shut the fuck up, even as we were being spoon fed shit.
Obama should have been easy to read when he made the statement (during the campaign iirc?) that he was opposed to same sex marriage.
“Obama has the authority to make it happen.”
Despite all protestations to the contrary, Obama gets what Obama wants. No more, no less.
Lieberman owes Obama for campaigning for him over Ned Lamont, the actual Democratic nominee. This was in 2006 so I don’t know how the liberal blogosphere mostly decided in 2008 that Obama was going to be this wonderful progressive savior. Even the FISA cave didn’t give most of them pause. Kos himself wrote reams of justifications for it.
“Given the choice between a Republican and someone who acts like a Republican, people will vote for a real Republican every time.”
Harry Truman
Democrats haven’t learned this yet.
How come we don’t see Kos the Obamabot on teebee anymore?
He was banned from MSNBC for being mean to Scarborough for one thing.
The comment was more an addendum to yours than a statement directed at you.
I mentioned TN-05 as a suggestion to FDL as one place for FDL to focus on. I don’t live in that district, but will help FDL if there is any effort at FDL to call for Cooper to be primaried.
If I could do it on my own, I wouldn’t need to come here.
Shit, lemme on that show. I’ll show Joe and Mika the Airhead what mean is.
Guess it is tough to swallow when all the evidence leads to where you’d rather it not lead, or if I as suspect, you’d just rather the rest of us not learn of where it leads.
On another note, the sun set in the west last night before I went to bed, as it has every night of my life so far. I’m betting it’s going to set in the west tonight.
Anything wrong with that analysis?
The thing is, he wasn’t even mean to Joe ON the show. Scarborough is pissed because Kos brought up a certain dead intern on his website. Mika’s dad doesn’t even get on anymore because he called them both “remarkably shallow”.
Awesome, that’d be must be TV.
Hell, I’d even go Pay for View on that one.
I’d say one or two of the ‘bot scales have fallen from his eyes :D
What about your district? I may help candidates from other districts but my focus is on the one I live in. Neither the Rep nor the Party from the district next door has to pay any attention to me.
Unfortunately, far, far too many rank and file Democratic voters haven’t gotten there yet either.
Teh fear o teh other one is just sooooo great, doncha know.
I wonder if they think getting tortured by a D administration will somehow hurt less than if they were tortured by an R administration? I’m betting it would be worse in the D one. When the R’s ran things, peeps in our own govt did the torturing. With Obama, it’s
renditionedoutsourced to the real pros overseas.Oh yeah. He’s been showing improvement for weeks now. I’m waiting for an apology to all of us “firebaggers”. I don’t expect him to be that explicit but I haven’t been beaten up there recently.
Shallow? If they were any denser they’d be singularities.
And Democratic politicians wonder why Republicans keep beating the shit out of them day in, day out.
I’ll guarantee you apology or no apology, there’s an awful lot of respect for Jane going on over there now.
Actually I just made that quote a part of my signature on my emails. Thanks oldhippiejan for that. This is something that needs to be widely used, especially when communicating with “Democrats” in government.
Is Harry Reid urging Joe Lieberman to run?
Is the Democratic Pary dead and rotting in the sun?
Amazing what happens when one actually thinks things through.
I pointed out how the firebaggers were right and my comment got a lot of responses full of contrition and shame for the hate directed at Jane and us.
You’ll have to talk to Zbigniew Brzezinski about that. I’m just quoting him.
Perhaps the billionaire bailout tax cave-in should sit on Nancy Pelosi’s desk until the House Of Lords repeals DADT. The Democratic wing of the democratic party is being scolded and talked to like children about the art of “compromise.” Continuation of the Bush Economic Miracle Tax Policy should be held hostage until DADT is repealed.
Kewl.
I rarely go there.
But I went there a couple days ago and it was like night and day compared to what I saw the last time I clicked there.
And that’s a good thing. If we keep shouting the truth to the heavens, we’re going to change more peeps minds. And IMO eventually when the peeps figure out who they can and can’t trust, Jane and FDL is going to find themselves with some well earned political capital to spend. I only hope that day gets here soon enough.
Yep.
Back to work.
Namaste
I’ll reserve final judgment until 2012. Then we’ll see if they can get over the D vs R thing long enough to talk about real issues instead of the false dichotomy kabuki that has been their forte’ until recently.
TN-02 – Knoxville – John Duncan, Jr will be in office representing my district until he’s ready to leave. Period.
Seeing how FDL supported primary challengers for Senate races in Connecticut and Arkansas and other places, I guess I thought FDL would be looking to do the same in other states and districts going forward.
If there’s any organization to the efforts whatsoever at FDL, I suggest looking at Democratic Party primary races for the House in 2012.
TN-05 is a district where the people lean Democratic, but are given only Jim Cooper to vote for. They should get and would likely choose another option.
kinda fun to see the reversal of the ol ratings game they play over there whenever her name is mentioned now :D
Especially considering how personal and vitriolic some of those comments got! And nary a peep from the moderators that I ever saw.
Candidate Obama had a pretty good message for rank and file Democrats. Lots of people lapped it up, myself included. Unfortunately President Obama has conveniently forgotten most of the things he campaigned on. I think rank and file Democrats want an FDR type, but unfortunately the Democratic Leadership are a bunch of corporate fascists, so we will never be given anything but the likes of Lieberman.
Yep. We wanted FDR and got a half ass cross between Chamberlain and Mussolini.
This is one of the reasons I harped so hard during the HC debate to make those who supported that POS OWN it. Eventually, peeps figure it out. And when they do, they learn who they can trust and who to respect.
Same with this tax “compromise.” ALL who try and to sell this is going to be the best we’ll get (sound familiar to hcr??) need to OWN that too. Because two years from now when the economy still sucks AND the deficit cutters have used their scissors folks will remember who told them to swallow that shit and who told them to fight.
Jane eventually builds up enough political capital from the respect of the rank and file, Jane can make some real noise and make some real changes. And IMO, if Jane is the one saying “change” THAT will be change I can believe in.
When the naysayers continually spread the bullshit of why this or that is good or as good as it gets, and we KNOW they’re wrong, MAKE THEM OWN IT. Eventually peeps will learn who to trust.
“got a half ass cross between Chamberlain and Mussolini.”
Great one, I’ll have to use that in my next letter to the editor of the local newspaper.
I certainly can’t speak for the Lake but individuals here gave what support they could to races for the House and Senate in locales other than their own. I would imagine that if there were a real progressive running for office somewhere the Lake would muster up whatever support it could. I view the Lake primarily as a place to share and disseminate ideas and a support mechanism for candidates as secondary, although at election time they go hand in hand. We can’t come close to raising the money that other PACs do.
*G*
I know many here don’t like Lieberman, and I don’t like everything about him, but I do like him.
I doubt he will run in 2014. Though, with Senators, many feel it’s a lifetime appointment.
During this next Congress, he is going to take a more prominent role due to larger GOP seats.
We have seen the first green shoots of bipartisanship here the last few weeks. That demonstrated that the block to bipartisanship was Democrats all along. They felt they had the numbers and didn’t need to pay attention to the GOP.
So, what really was happening was a conscious decision to not entertain ANY GOP ideas (because, frankly, they didn’t have to with the seats they had), yet, at the same time consciously push a PR line that it was the GOP obstruction that was the reason for no GOP ideas being used.
If you don’t understand and grasp the sinister basis on which such a move it done, you are not really much of a believer in having government be on a more open basis.
Certainly, we agree that HCR was, and still is, a POS.
His term expires in 2012 and the rest of the comment is a crock.
ROFLMAO!
Bipartisanship!
OMG!!!!
Too funny dood. Too too funny.
Bipartisanship. hahahahahahaha Everything the rich want and nothing the left wants. Bipartisanship.
still laughing
Thanks, SD! You beat me to it and with fewer words.
What a surprise.
There were two elections I gave a shit about in the midterms. Prop 19 and Reid vs Angle. Lost them both. Damit.
Of all the Democratic Senators who lost in the midterms, why couldn’t it have been Reid rather than Feingold.
Reid must have hated the public option as much as Lieberman (I-Aetna).
Interesting about Dean, though–I just got an email from him talking about how bad the tax bill was and how great Bernie Sanders was. Of course, he wanted money, which he didn’t get (I had donated to Sanders last week). This email seemed opposed to what I heard him say early last week about this bill and I’m wondering just what’s going on.
I haven’t trusted Howard Dean since he flip-flopped on the health insurance industry bailout bill.
I’m wondering if he’s starting to get cold feet about supporting this turkey of a bill.
Taking a diversion of the topic and speaking of Senate Tricks I read yesterday of Community Radio Bill which had bi-partisan support and co-sponsored by Sen. Cantwell and Sen. McCain. Sen Cantwell was quoted saying the bill could pass probably by 98 votes in the senate except for two anonymous senators blocking the bill. I do not mind the bill blocking by a single senator if that is what the rule allows but why anonymous in a free open democracy. A bill which obviously does public good with community getting together and interacting is blocked anonymously. Is there any way Sen. Reid at-least knows the anonymous senators or is it just some staffer hit the stop button on the bill.
Oh Im sure the bankers and pharmaceutical thugs will want this whore at their gathering. Lieberman won’t even have to get off his back to get re”seated”.
When you’re willing to do anything to people, and I mean anything, you can get very far in life.
There won’t be a free ride for ‘ol Joe this time around. No shot as a Democrat. No longer controls own fake party. He can only make it as a Republican, which was proven last time around by the votes and the donations he took. He’ll have to choose, and we all know how Joe loves giving a straight answer. Should be great theatre watching Joe squirm when asked what party he represents this time and exactly what he stands for.
We’ll be following the money Joe, and we’ve still got the last election on tape in case anyone forgets.
If only Reid had lost Nevada and Feingold won Wisconsin. I am now convinced that we live on a hell planet.
