In a moment of angry accidental honesty, President Obama compared his recent deal with the Republicans on tax cuts to the fight over the public option. From a transcript of the press conference via Greg Sargent:
This notion that somehow we are willing to compromise too much reminds me of the debate that we had during health care. This is the public option debate all over again. I pass a signature piece of legislation where we finally get health care for all Americans, something that Democrats have been fighting for for a hundred years. But because there was a provision in there that they didn’t get, that would have affected maybe a couple of million people, even though we got health insurance for 30 million people, and the potential for lower premiums for maybe 100 million people, that somehow that was a sign of weakness, of compromise.
Of course the two are identical, but not for the reason Obama claims about progressives not understanding the need for compromise. The two situations are identical because, despite being big campaign promises, President Obama didn’t want to fulfill those promises. At every turn, he worked behind the scenes to undermine them.
President Obama kept claiming he wanted a public option well after he secretly promised the for-profit hospitals he would kill it in exchange for their support. After that, he quietly sent signals that he did not want it and worked to undermine any attempt to put in in the bill.
On the tax cuts, the same situation played out. Obama signaled he was willing to “compromise” when he would not offer a veto threat. He also worked to kill Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) plan to let the tax cuts expire just for those making over $1 million.
This tax deal is the public option fight all over again, but not the way Obama falsely tries to spin it. Both times, Obama had no intention of fighting for his promise. Both times, he argued that in order to obtain some help for regular people, he was “forced” into endorsing a huge transfer of wealth to the ultra rich and big corporations.
Finally, I suspect both fights to end the same way, too. After the deed was done, both times Obama made vague promises about how in the future he would finally get what he promised, even though he had no clear plan to success. However, in the future, when there is a chance to get what he promised, he will fail to fight yet again.

About FDL Action
As Kucinich said about public option-less HCR, “You’re building a foundation on sand … I do not think it is a first step toward anything I have supported in the past.”
And this time the argument that we must support this step backward to save Obama’s presidency is even less persuasive because:
1) He’s screwed himself either way, and
2) Who cares?
Of course it’s the same modus operandi. A blind man could see this coming weeks ago, or years ago for that matter. He’s just angry because a lot of people know he’s a fraud and a complete wimp.
I yelled at the teevee right where your boldface is: YOU GOT THAT RIGHT, BUDDY!
Just got an e-mail from OFA containing a link to Obama’s “message” [I'm not THAT crazy] and inviting me to “send a message.” [Oh boy!!]
Have some fun yourself:
http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/TaxCutsVideo/?source=20101207_MS_st3
“Finally, I suspect both fights to end the same way, too.”
Me too. While Democrats are acting all pissified and outraged now, in the end they’ll pass this pathetic piece of shit.
Y’know, I’ve never agreed with or approved of Mary Landrieu, but this deserves a “right on.”
From the Huffington Post:
Obama thinks he’s invincible. His true weakness, however, is what he perceives as his greatest strength, his fetish for bipartisanship. Of course it’s nothing more than a smoke screen to dupe the rubes. He needs to be attacked on what he perceives as his strenght, bipartisanship. Everyone knows the Republicans are not about bipartisanship, with the exception of the corporate media of course. The U.S. public has to be exposed to Obama’s big lie, it’s his Achilles heel and may well be cause of his impending downfall. It’s a Republican tactic, attack your enemies perceived strength.
Thanks for the link. I went over there and left a “sanctimonious” rant.
[cross-posted]
O’Donnell just sucker punched Jane and Adam and the book author by switching the strategy that Sherrod Brown advocated from campaigning for unemployment ins. extension to campaigning to “do the right thing” on taxes. O’Donnell fabricated a straw man by asking “when has any president been successful in using the bully pulpit to get Republicans to do the right thing on taxes?”
Sherrod Brown very precisely argued NOT for using the bully pulpit on the tax issue but on the unemployment issue, because all the Rethuglicans would eventually cave-in on unemployment ins., because they always cave in on that, because they have as many millions of constituents on UI as Dems do.
Somebody warn Peter Welch right now, he’s going on O’Donnell in 30 secs.
This just in: Obama buys used car from Bush.
Maybe Obama could direct some of that snotty attitude towards those who actually deserve contempt.
[cross-posted, sorry to pick on your thread today, Jon]
Just had to do this drive-by posting, can’t stay long. But OMG Jane was sooooo right about parts of what we are seeing being kabuki. WH has now even gone to the ludicrous extent of denying that it was engaging in kabuki to the NYT. On background, of course. Meanwhile, the same NYT article reveals that Biden was the secret back channel to McConnell; Biden sold out the Dems on the estate tax giveaway and got only refundable tax credits in return.
Biden and McConnell … well, I suppose it makes sense. If he couldn’t even bring himself to say that Jesse Helms was evil, why would he draw the line at the Zombie Bulldog?
Swell, in another words, the GOP might as well have a majority in the Senate because the Vice Dumbass is treating them as though they have the majority. Hand meet head.
Yeah, literally. It’s the one he was so fond of during mid-terms, the one they drove into the ditch. It’s his baby now.
He could practice in the mirror.
In fairness to Obama, that “hostage” line about Republicans is memorable. The problem is, he never uttered it before his “negotiations”.
An excellent summing up.
Bring back the Clintons or Kerry or Gore or Carter. What a bunch
What is the future of the Democratic Party? Barney Frank?
Rotating villian
Obama caved to the Repubs. The Democrats will cave to Obama. And Democrats and progressives will cave, too–i.e., they will vote for Obama in 2012. There’s a reason our leaders are wimps.
A caller on C-SPAN this morning compared how Bush got the Iraq War vs how Obama fails again and again to get much of anything while giving everything away.
Interesting comparison.
I’m getting ready to call my idiot congressman to register my dissatisfaction with the proposed tax
scamplan. My approach will be to walk them right into the wall as follows:1. The Republican party admires the economic policies of Ronald Reagan, is that correct?
Assuming they answer with a “yes,” I will pose the next question.
2. Then how do you explain the fact that Ronald Reagan’s own budget director, Mr. David Stockman, thinks this plan is quite literally insane?
The next sound I hear will probably be a, “well….um…” followed by a dial tone…
As a general matter, I would strongly recommend that high-profile people publicly and repeatedly (especially on cable news) use the David Stockman weapon against the Republicans. I can’t imagine how it can be countered, although I’m sure they’ll try.
(Channeling Joe Wilson)
Barack Obama, Barack Obama,
Hey, Hey, Hey,
YOU LIE
Someone thinking they’re invincible is, in and of itself, a major weakness. There’s always somebody tougher. Always.
Do you think that O jerks off when he jacks off the base?
What, exactly, is this about? We’re not going all Huffington Post here, are we?
With all the issues needing addressing in this lame duck session, isn’t it time that Hapless Harry put the Senate on the 7-day, 24-hour clock?
Yes, this is the same as health care, with one exception: I haven’t heard anyone say “don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good”. At least not yet.
It’s not a “done deal” yet. There is significant push-back from both the House and the Senate. We sanctimonious purists need to keep up the pressure in any way possible, contacting Congress and any political action groups we may belong to. It would be useful to announce primary challengers and start loudly demanding Obama’s resignation.
Not a single penny or a single vote for any politician supporting this monstrosity. Pass it on.
Yo Margaret:
Do you know anything about this? I just started getting them.
That’s just it, isn’t it? If he were jacking off the base, we would at least get something out of it. His strokes are saved for the rich. Period.
Too bad for Larry Craig that O’s got two hands and doesn’t need anyone to help him jerk and jack at the same time.
On that note, I’m outta here for a while.
I can fend for myself in that category, thank you. I wouldn’t want that crook getting anywhere near me. It does amuse me to think of the vetting cocktail weening parties that put O thru his paces before they allowed him to become a candidate as circle jerks, though.
All I know is that now, whenever I’m unfortunate enough to see Obama on TV, the word “LIAR” spontaneously shoots out of my mouth.
Dunno but I’m not a lever puller, just a commentator. Sometimes that gets triggered by keywords and so forth. Sometimes it happens while they are making upgrades, doing maintenance, etc. Again, I’m the wrong person to ask. I’m just a little person on this blog as in life.
I beg to differ. Thanks.
Well so can I for that matter. NOT that Obama would be interested in doing anything for me in that, or any regard. I’m far too poor and common for that.
This DINO President reminds me of a spoiled 12 year old. Let him run on the Republican ticket in 2012.
By the way, the tax cut compromise is a TAX INCREASE for families making under 40K, as it replaces the making work pay tax cut with a 2% cut in payroll taxes – LESS money in the pockets of families that really need relief!
I once got thrown in that hopper thru some hiccup in the system. I soon got an email that the behind the scenes crew knew about it, apologized & were working on fixing it. I thanked them & said I didn’t take it personally.
“I pass a signature piece of legislation where we finally get health care for all Americans, something that Democrats have been fighting for for a hundred years. But because there was a provision in there that they didn’t get, that would have affected maybe a couple of million people,”
What’s a couple of million people anyway…a few here…a few there. I guess they just have to stop whining and buck up and pay premiums they can never afford and get fined and harassed by the f’ing IRS. Can’t get blood from a rock Barry.
The fact that Obama is furious at us for not “appreciating” him is ridiculous. He stabbed us in the back and we should thank him for the extra ventilation and fresh air?
And yet McConnell’s take is that, while not perfect, this monstrosity is “a step in the right direction.”
Obama says that this will be improved in 2012 with an R-majority House. My only response is the one I give my rightie sister when she holds fast to Fox fallacy: “There just isn’t a nice way to put this – you’re crazy.”
Just so. It happens from time to time. Also if you write out the word fa**ot, it will automatically go into moderation, even if you’re talking about getting a bundle of wood for your fireplace. Computers can glean out words but are dismal at determining context.
“Thank you sir! May I have another?”
I think I just stumbled onto the bestest site on the whole interweb machine.
Then again, I might just be mistaken about the aforementioned.
Gawd, I hope we’re not going Huff Post here. They used to censor me for writing limericks about Bill O’Reilly.
How can you stand watching him? I thinking he is beating on the liberals, because he intends to run as a republican in 2012.
I also haven’t heard the argument that “Dems need to support the President because he needs a ‘win’ [a la health care/public option.” Or “he will look weak if he loses.”
Has it occurred to these fools that they’re running out of arguments?
I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets pushed through without one Republican vote, just like Health Care.
Gotta go get a big hole drilled into a tooth. I’m pretty sure they’ll be using the Craftsman power tools. If one breaks during the procedure, they can get a free replacement.
Only problem is and what most people don’t get, is that Obama is getting exactly what he wants and there are plenty of people who will go along just because he calls himself a democrat.
Censored for writing limericks about Bill O’Reilly? I thought that was mandatory, the more vile, the better.
Heh. Did we just crash their site?
Don’t fret. Huffington Post has the most capricious “moderation” system I know of. I don’t know how they “qualify” them but they rely on their commentators to “moderate” so if you say something they don’t personally like, it can be yanked, regardless of content. The only thing that seems to matter there is whether the specific “moderators” trolling a particular thread happen to like you or your comment. Commentating there is an exercise in frustration.
I wouldn’t either. :/
I sent a comment via the link given above. Told him I was sorry I hadn’t understood that “Change” meant that he would change into a Republican. My bad.
thanks for the link. we all need to write to them. not that they listen
“Capricious” is the exact word for their mod policies.
OHJ, I’m sure hoping this ends differently.

I think there’s going to be a lot of “fool me once” response, and I don’t think “we suck less” + “be very very afraid of Palin” are going to pull Obama and this crap bill through.
Actually, he thinks he can fool anyone and think about it. My husband and I have known from the start that he is a republican, but he fooled a lot of people so he thinks he can continue to fool them.
So, Is Jane the sole face of FDL? I read Jon’s offerings & I’m amazed NO ONE has asked him to air his arguments on TV. He, and the viewing public, deserve it. It’s all about info. & Jon’s repeatedly & consistently demonstrated he’s very good at gathering it & making sense of it.
The commentator David Bromwich on HP wrote soem revealing stuff awhile ago about Obama. Obama thinks he is the smartest guy in the room and thinks that some flourish of words solves any situation. He was horrible in this press release as if suddenly somebody said hey you are the smartest guy in the room and nobody believes you. I can only imagine that in the future he will find more and more solace with the gopers who will stroke that part of him.
Word on the street says Obama is being offered the role of the Sta-Puff Marshmallow in the remake of “Ghostbusters.”
Our thinking needs to change, they are not wimps, they are getting exactly what they wanted all along. My feeling is that if obama thinks he is on his way out, he needs to get as much done for the wealthy as he can in the next 2 years and then we will be fooled into putting someone else in to do their bidding.
But isn’t it that Obama is holding us all hostage and trying to force us to be afraid of the horrible things that would happen if we oppose this terrible sellout?
Obama is bragging about the Public Option as a success the Left hates it, The Right hates it its main support is people who love Obama and people who want healthcare but don’t realize National Healthcare is so much better and cheaper in other words low information voters.
Thanks for that feedback link. My response:
Obama really?
Obama you always get what you want. Not what progressives want.
(Obama; look around the only people that like what you want are the ultra rich and their puppets the republicans. Dems pretty much hate everything you want.)
First the health care deal was a joke, no rational human being fights for the Bob Dole health care bill in a depression.
Obama can you stop saying you love the USA middle class. Just stop it.
(Obama steams is starting to come out of the skulls of americans, when you talk about loving the USA middle class. Mr. Fired Up! and Ready to go! you are now FIRING UP people in a very negative way.)
We get it, Obama you were for the Public Option before you were Against the Public Option, you are starting to sound like your COUSIN SARAH PALIN.
I wish, I was a fly on the wall at the WH last night when KO and Rachel rip you a new one. :)
that is why, we need 2 new parties. Since we have a 2 party system, time to replace both of them. Otherwise, we are just pissing in the wind.
It would be interesting if Jane would call the WH and say “Barry, we need to talk”. Heh, heh.
Obama leader of the Third Way Surrendercrats
This country was NOT founded on compromise. Was it compromise when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
srsly,
My two cents here.
Thanks, Margaret. I had come to believe it was just me they didn’t like over there.
Did you see the reports that a serious difference of opinion is opening up between Obama and Reid, who said he opposes the agreement? Ditto for Pelosi? It might be worth writing to them and asking them not to go back on their opposition. I think both Reid and Pelosi are afraid of a revolt from within the ranks. This has possibilities.
Agreed he does think he is smarter but thats only because he’s been in Washington. I am sure Obama does not read the blogs.
David Dayen has a fresh cross-post available: DADT Hopes Increase, With Short Window for Defense Authorization Bill Cloture Vote
I don’t know what’s more disgusting. Obama’s sellout, or the selling of the sellout by whores like Ezra Klein.
A Fox commentator named “Falalel Bill”,
Incited a madman a doctor to kill.
Though he squirmed and denied,
We all knew that he lied,
For he’s just a Republican shill.
OBAMA CAVED = OBAMA FAILED.
TWO YEARS TO WAIT FOR A REPLACEMENT.
GO ON A HOLIDAY.
Yeah, him and all the other centrists on MSNBC.
I wonder when the last time this ever happened was, if ever. Instead of the President leading, the Speaker and the Majority leader take stands more in line with their respective colleagues, who also happen to be more in line with the people of the country, and the President is left standing with egg on his face? I can’t recall this ever happening before, and I’m fairly old.
Yeah, remember when the Drugman said he wanted Obama to fail? Well as much as I hate to agree with ol’ BoilAss, I also want Obama to fail. We need to find a credible candidate to Carter his ass in 2012.
The WH is now saying that most Americans are in favor of tax cuts for the rich. Are they nuts?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/08/white-house-privately-pus_n_793732.html
Most citizens are not paying attention at all, so Obama (and everyone else) gets away with this rip off of the “small people,” esp bc the corporate-owned rightwing media has Obama’s back, essentially. Until citizens actually *wake up* realize how badly we’ve all been screwed, I figure we might as well count on more of the same?
How bad can it get?? Anyone have copy of Dickens handy? If not, go borrow any of his books from your local public Library while there’s still some funding to keep it open (may not be there at some point in the future, if the Overlords have their way).
Think it can’t happen? Ever visited a third world country?? I’ve lived in several. Meg Whitman campaigned for CA gov this year with one notion being that CA workers should start “learning” from their counterparts in the totalitarian dictatorship of China… we all need a “lesson” in how to “behave” and what to “expect” on the job and in life.
Get a clue, folks: this IS the new reality, and even tho Whitman was a big LOSER afte spending over $175million on her campaign (and getting untold donations from corporations, wealthy people and UNIONS), this is the new reality coming our way.
Tea Partiers will clap, cheer & jump for unbridled joy to be told what to do… until the cold hard reality of it all slaps them hard in the kisser.
But I think we’ve a LOT further *down* to go. Citizens are stupid. Pardon if my bluntness offends.
Falafel – spelling correction.
thanks for that link. I unsubscribed from OFA previously.
Obama thinks he’s magnificent, when actually he’s continuing to hollow out America.
No, the WH & Obama emphatically are not “nuts,” and please remember that. THIS is called propoganda. Republicans via the corporate-owned rightwing media use propoganda in much the same way that the former Soviet Union did; Republicans learned a LOT of lessons from the totalitarian communist USSR. Those of us of a certain age know a little about how Soviet propoganda worked. THIS is one example that’s similar to the Soviet style.
Live and learn…
Yes this is the Public Option debate all over again. Obama stabbed the Public Option in the back, and Democrats lost the mid-terms. What does he think is going to happen this time?
Right. The Soviet people knew their media was all propaganda. The American people think they are getting straight information from our media, which makes the propaganda all the more effective.
If you have not yet voted in the effort to replace BO and the Dinos, please vote now at
http://my.firedoglake.com/themalcontent/2010/12/07/the-movement-grows-voting-deadline-6-p-m-pst/#comment-266463
Vent your anger productively!
P.S. “BO and the Dinos” is not a local band.
Obama tossed out FDR when talking about the tax cut plan. He thinks that if political pragmatism worked for FDR, and it did, it could work for him, too. The problem is, FDR was ready, willing and able to take on his political opponents. Obama isn’t. He seems to be making backroom deals with them. At a minimum, he signals his willingness to compromise waaay too early. And no one, including Lawrence O’Donnell, will ever make me think the Republicans compromised as much as Obama did on this one. They came away satisfied, if not happy and relieved. We come away feeling like we got kicked in the teeth. Thanks for nothing, Barry…
It’s difficult to understand how someone so intelligent and well-educated can fail to grasp the fact that he will never ingratiate himself to the political right.
“The fact that Obama is furious at us for not “appreciating” him is ridiculous. He stabbed us in the back and we should thank him for the extra ventilation and fresh air?”
Classic demo of Narcissistic rage.
YES THEY ARE NUTS!!!
It is funny how most americans were in favor of the Public Option, but POLLS were not important during that non-debate
When the ULTRA RICH need a tax cut, let us go get the POLLS.
Anybody noticed DeMint’s statements on this tax deal?
TPM
That’s it! Loan money the money to eat to people with no jobs and little hope of jobs.
Club for Growth President Chris Chocola sez:
Pretty sure it was the Japanese…
It was the Japanese. Germans? WTF?
Oilbummer, like the Ivy League elitist he is, gets particular satifaction in scolding the so-called Left. He really gets off on it, you can tell. Whereas FDR got off on skewering the “economic royalists,” Barry makes sure the white man big-jowled bankster criminals get their obscene Xmas bonuses.
I’m glad START TREATY will pass in exchange for Obama giving in domestically.
Let’s ignore him and have everyone lobby”no” that way we get foreign policy and no tax cuts for the rich as well.
Husbands and wives disagree so do children and parents let Obama say what he must to save foreign policy.
Otherwise in 13 weeks Republicans will be free to destiny US foreign policy as they are destroying America domestically.
That’s Bluto’s famous rant from Animal House.
Thanks for that. Unsurprised. Anytime you find out what DeMint wants or what the craptastic Club for Growth wants… then you know what should really happen: just the opposite.
Those guys are nothing if not predictable, frankly.
TODAY’S REPUBLICAN LEADERS ARE AMERICA’S ENEMY WITHIN….AND OBAMA DOESN’T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THEY WANT TO DESTROY THE AMERICAN ECONOMY
Republicans ARE practicing seditious DEMAGOGUERY and anti-democracy OBSTRUCTIONISM intended to destabilize our economy for purposes of political exploitation.
Republicans AREN’T making a sincere effort to STOP the bleeding THEIR incompetent leadership and failed policies created. Instead, they’re using inflammatory lies and accusations as a smokescreen to conceal their subversive agenda, which is to cause President Obama and America to fail so they can blame Democrats for the consequences of THEIR calamitous mismanagement.
Republicans ARE preposterously professing that THEIR disgraceful political WHORING had nothing to do with the banking, real estate, stock market and employment catastrophes that resulted.
Republicans ARE trying to hamstring Democrats to prevent them from repairing the damage caused during a Republican presidency that was irresponsibly enabled by Republican Senators and Representatives.
Republicans ARE offering ridiculous arguments meant solely to disrupt and prevent progressive change. They’d rather divide America and create political gridlock than endure the political consequences of effective Democratic governance.
Republicans AREN’T the LOYAL OPPOSITION; they ARE the ENEMY WITHIN whose mercenary priorities have eroded their moral and ethical standards to the point that duplicity and betrayal have become their preferred modus operandi.
It’s one thing to advocate their conservative beliefs; it’s another thing entirely to willfully sabotage America’s government because a successful Democratic presidency would not be vulnerable to the greed, fears and hatreds that have produced and sustained the despicable Republican anti-government corporatism and anti-Christian faux theocracies that are poisoning and crippling American society.
Line from Animal House…
Yeah, this Ivy League entitlement elitism has really gotten out of control, hasn’t it? When W as POTUS, at least we knew where he was coming from, as he (amazingly) was pretty honest about his intentions (despite the charade of being some kind of TX cowboy, which he wasn’t). With Obama, it’s like that elitism really went to his head, and he thinks he can get away with anything. What. a. tool.
What is really funny, or perhaps pathetic, is that for all the faux “bipartisanship”, Obama fails to realise that even if he publicly takes his orders from Boehner for the next two years, not one Republican will ever ever vote for him. And he has kicked away the people who would have.
Complicit or weak – neither is acceptable.
It makes me nauseous every time I read anything that says “the people” have spoken.
Organizing For America has a hell of a lot of nerve to email me after that display by the President and ask me for money. I wrote them a “sanctimonious professional left retard email” saying that they had a lot of nerve asking me for money and requested to be taken off their email list.
Why is it that Obama never appears more angry and annoyed than when he is talking about the left? Where is the venom for the Republicans?
It’s not that they’re wimps, it’s that they really want the same things. The whole quasi political theatre is so people can vote for Dems, and still think they are liberal.
What increasingly irks me about Obama is the way he melts like butter on a hot stove top and then pats himself on the back for making the tough choices.
Evil triumphs when…..
I am a liberal, an old activist from the sixties, a political campaign consultant for one hundred campaigns, and have described myself as so far left of center that if the earth were flat, I would be clinging to the edge. With that said, what the hell is wrong with my liberal and progressive friends!? What do they want from Obama?!Throw himself on his sword?! He is the President for God’s sake. He is suppose to lead the country and keep on going. Get over it liberals! You want Boehner or McConnell as President?! Want to give them the country for the sake of righteousness?! You want Beck, Limbaugh and O’Reilly on ABC, CBS, and NBC?!
I managed both liberal and conservative campaigns. I found that the conservatives would march in straight lines, salute, and jump out of an airplane without a parachute, if so ordered. I found that the liberals would argue with you all day about what # lead pencil to use! “I’d rather be right, than be be president,” is an old expression. Give us a break, guys!!
Evil triumphs…when good men spank the monkey!!!
Same here.
No. So who do they think they’re peddling this shit to? It sure ain’t us. Must be the “independents”? Or maybe they are nuts.
Speaking myself, I had deep concerns from the get-go when Obama, pre the inauguration, was babbling on & on about bipartisan this and bipartisan that, and was meeting & greeting with all of these rightwingers. That’s all very well, but whenever have Republicans made the slightest effort to “work” with Democrats??? I’m not talking about tit for tat, or “they did it first.” I’m talking about “know the enemy” when developing a strategy.
It’s been downhill all the way since then, and now it’s clear that all of Obama’s rabbiting on about “bipartisany” things is just bogus and smoke screen for him to be the Republican that he is and capitulate constantly to his corporate overlords who are paying him handsomely. It’s clear as day that Obama could give a sh*t about anyone but himself, and Obama does NOT have the best interests of the nation AT ALL. Not good.
It’s propoganda. Learn from THAT; get used to it. You’ll see more. Emphatically they are NOT “nuts.” This is done very deliberately.
Who are they “selling” it to? To anyone who’s lazy enough to take it at face value, which, sadly, is quite a lot of population.
O is our first black Republican President. How wonderful: he lies like B, he murders Iraqis, Pakistanis and Afghans like B, he continues to shred our Constitution, our Bill of Rights and our Writ of Habeus Corpus (the base of all of our other Rights) the same way B did…
I was thinking about this last night. I was in the Soviet Union in the 1980s on academic business. We were bugged all the time; one of my colleagues was caught in a KGB ‘honey trap’(like Assange in Sweden), and we could not talk about anyone whom we’d met for fear they would be compromised through the bugs. But the Soviets understood all this. In private they talked. I remember one time in Leningrad taking the long way around to get to someone’s apartment. We were a half dozen or so, went by different routes and at somewhat different times. Up the staircase, into the tiny apartment. Closing outside doors and the glass doors to the salon, where we could talk. There are ways to survive.
With respect, I disagree that the WH is “nuts” in saying that the majority of Americans agree with extending the tax cuts. To be redundant, I see it as well-thought-out propoganda pumped out by the corporate-owned rightwing media. They do this because it works. Too many citizens are lazy, vapid & not paying attention, and they’ll “buy” the crap that the corproations are selling them. Learn from this is my respectful suggestion. This is how the corporations operate. It’s the old Soviet propoganda model updated for the 21st C.
As a matter of fact, Obama lost me at “Rick Warren”.
I guess this is “fighting for his values” for Obama.
That might tell us something, no?
Tell us something about his “New Democrat” values, that is…
He’s sly-er than Bush.
Yes, there are ways to survive, but welcome to our soon-to-be new reality.
I went on a very brief trip to Moscow in the late 1970s right after the Soveits allowed a very tourists visit. You had to be constantly watched and monitored by InTourist, and if your travel routes deviated slightly from what you had said they would be, someone would almost immediately show up and make you do what you said. It was chilling.
I flew on an Aeroflot (and survived! heh) plane from Athens to Moscow via Sofia. There was group of “elites” who had been “permitted” visit Greece on some kind of govt study-trip. I ended up sitting next to a younger person around my age who spoke English; a doctor. We had a great conversation for both flights, but we totally monitored the whole entire time by various minders. The minders sat in the seats ahead of us, behind us and beside us, and they switched around just so we’d BOTH know that they were listening.
When we stopped in Bulgaria, they whisked her off somewhere for the whole time on the ground. I asked her if it was “ok” for us to continue sitting together on the way to Moscow, but she said yes.
What did we talk about??? Nothing of major note, albeit she did *grill me* about stuff like how whites in the USA treated AA citizens, about USA apartheid, about how US citizens could not always find jobs and were sometimes out of work with no dole to support them, questions about the unions worked, etc. Some of it was intended to highlight weaknesses in the capitalist system, and I didn’t hesitate to agree that those weaknesses existed.
It was very interesting, but make no mistake, we were definitely scrutinized. I often wonder how she fared after the trip. I did my best to not say anything that might be dangerous for her.
US citizens might have to do similar stuff in the future, more’s the pity.
Yeah. That certainly was a huge “tell,” wasn’t it??? Good ole Pastor Rick who hates teh gheyz so much that he’s sponsoring that legislation in Uganda to kill teh gheyz.
And we wonder why Obummer won’t repeal DADT???? Go figure. Homophobic for sure. Anyone who’s chummy with Rick Warren is “suspect” imo.
Your oligarchy at work. Obama personally gets something out of this deal. The Republicans get something as well. What do we the people get: bupkis….as usual. The political game is played on different levels. “We the people” get to see only what the oligarchy wants us to see. Peace
I like James Carville’s quote. “If Hillary gave up one of her balls and gave it to Obama, he’d have two.
Yes. It is the third term of the Bush regime… or at least their playbook, tactics, values, etc.
Eh, I disagree with Eelhead, which is not unusual. I think Obama’s got balls a-plenty. THAT’s not his “problem.” It’s just that he uses his “balls” in the service of the corporations, who are paying him off. I’m sure the corporations think Obama’s “man enough” for their liking.
I agree with you, but Obama is not playing his cards the right way.
Obama can’t say in two years I am going to kill the Bush tax cuts.
Does Obama think the Bush tax cuts will be un-popular in two years?
(you can’t send congress polls talking about the bush tax cuts are popular now, are the polls going to be bad in two years?)
obama is not a good chess player at all
Obama is basically saying if the polls say people like the Bush tax cuts we will keep them.
PS: Obama never plan to end the BUSH tax cuts
Agree, except to add that the Democratic politicians also get bought off (or most of them do). As far as Republican citizens “getting something,” in reality only the super rich ones do. The rest of the Republican voters are as *screwed* as Democratic voters are. It’s just that RushGlenn have told them not to worry but to be happy… and so on…
Yes. But Obama really doesn’t care how he plays chess or cards. It’s all the same payola for him from the corporations, really.
I think most/all of us here at FDL KNEW without a shadow of a doubt that the tax cuts would ALL be extended by Obummer. We’ve all been saying for ages, even while encouraging that ALL the cuts expire. Nothing that happened yesterday was at all surprising; just monumentally infuriating.
I include Republican voters and Democratic voters in the “we the people” description. “We the people” are ‘all’ the “useful idiots” the oligarchy and their politicians use to game the system to maintain their wealth and power. Peace
How are we going to cope with the real possibility that Obama will be in office for five more years?
You’re sure right about this, Jon. Your reaction was the same as mine – yes, it’s the same, because Obama’s lying and calling us “purists” and other euphemisms for unrealistic when we point this out.
That is hilarious! Thanks for sharing. I have to disagree with the number one pick though. For me, it’s a toss up between “Liebe Mutter” and “Swing that Gospel Ax.”
Almost forgot to comment on the topic:
The president is a douchebag.
To those of us who voted for Obama, what a mistake, It could have been H. Clinton. I doubt she would have folded so completely. or lacked any leadership ability. Who knew.
Keep hammering away at the guy and make his life as miserable as possible. These creatures hate the truth and the light of day. Peace
It’s not enough to just lie, it’s gotta be a bold faced lie:
White House Privately Pushing Data Showing Bush Tax Cut Extension Politically Popular
I hope the real Democrats will stand up and realize this is going to kill the Party and Obama is the party pooper.
If the Left kills the Democrats and the T-baggers kill the Republicans then happy days will be here again. Peace
All lies, no fight.
Thank you for the beautiful succinct truth of what comes from the Obama admin.
I could not believe that disingenuous shit that came out of his mouth. He has delivered health care for all Americans?!
Too bad Americans aren’t living his reality. IS he delusional or a just an immoral liar? Every “fight” from him gets worse.
Of course, he earned a noble prize for peace-so he probably believes he has ended war as well. I am sure if we dared to question him on that he would be furious. He has done so much for us already! Ended torture, ended war, gave us all health care. He is the miracle worker of our times-in his and the Ezra Kleins of the world. Maybe we can move into their gray matter and forget our own lives.
Hah! Thanks for that. I just sent a blistering response to his drivel. I can’t wait to see if they just delete it or respond with a pre-written email scolding me.
Great find! The totally fluffy hair in #8 is like so totally awesome! I’m totally like “oh mah gahd” yknow?
Obama says that we can’t continue the same ol’ battles. But the Republicans will ALWAYS continue those battles unless they get everything they want. We sent him there to battle–not put a “Kick Me I’m a Democrat” sign on his back.
Ultimately I believe it just comes down to him being a Wall Street phony.
If you look at things from that perspective than the things he does makes some kind of sense.
That’s why the left can be scolded. He doesn’t like or represent them.
Not to mention the TV serials. From “CSI:Fake Boobs” to “Snookie:What A Thick Boob”, most all the serials on the boob tube are propaganda.
Ding!
he had shown his true colors soon after he won the primaries!
I just hope there is a successful primary challenge….you have no idea how much I desire that, as that would be one way to prevent frauds in the future!
