It’s been over 48 hours and the only union response on Obama’s NAFTA-Style Korea Free Trade agreement has been a thumbs up from Bob King and the UAW.
But the thundering silence from the other unions is not indicative of what’s going on behind the scenes. At the AFL-CIO’s weekly Monday morning legislative meeting, the UAW tried to sell the deal to their fellow unions in the federation.
The unanimous disapproval from all the other unions was summed up in a 10 minute invective by Matt McKinnon, the Political Director of the Machinists, who said:
- UAW President Bob King threw every other union under the bus, and did not even bother to call his fellow AFL-CIO union presidents who are most affected and involved in the trade debate before announcing to the world their shameful, betraying position (no doubt why Leo Gerard took a jab at King over the weekend).
- It takes a fat load of nerve for the UAW to be asking others to abandon their long time positions just because the UAW went “yellow belly flip flop”
- The UAW got nothing it wanted, and the auto provisions they got in exchange for their support are “worth a bucket of warm spit”
- The deal will be the demise of not only UAW, but the 35% “rule of origin” provisions will be the China duty-free death knell for all US manufacturing – unless the other unions do the work to kill it. Such provisions require that only 35% of products coming into the US duty free be of Korean origin — the rest can come from parts made in China.
- The deal replicates everything in NAFTA that they have all opposed forever
- It’s vicious slap in the face by the White House – they do NOTHING to help labor, and then they do THIS?
- It’s a suicide mission for the 2012 election
There was not one AFL-CIO union at the meeting who did not vigorously oppose the deal. But they have all remained silent so far, giving the White House three free days to whip support for the bill as if the UAW position represents them all.
Everyone is waiting to hear what Leo Gerard of the Steelworkers has to say. In the meantime, those of us who are out here alone trying to define the trade deal for what it is become low hanging fruit for the Chamber — and with the phalanx of paid trolls they’ve had across the internet, it was only a matter of time before this kind of personal slime started rolling out from anti-labor astroturf operations.
Which is to be expected when you cross the Chamber of Commerce, but for the record, my relationship with Andy Stern didn’t end over the public option, one of Andy’s enemies just made that up — a crook who isn’t fit to shine Andy’s shoes. Andy and I are still friends, and I congratulated him last week on voting against the Catfood Commission’s recommendations. His was by far the best plan, and it was the right thing to do.
In the mean time Sherrod Brown, Mike Michaud, Linda Sanchez, US Chamber Watch, Friends of the Earth, Public Citizen and the Sierra Club have all been stars, working overtime this weekend to push back against the Chamber-generated propaganda. But we can’t carry this kind of heavy lift alone. Every hour that goes by, the narrative of the deal’s “glorious achievement” gets locked in, and it will be harder and harder to move people once they’ve already committed to support it. All the while, those out in front of the opposition become sitting ducks for the Chamber’s formidable resources.
It’s clear from what happened this morning that that UAW intends to try to block a tough AFL-CIO opposition to the deal, and demand that the federation sit it out.
Everyone is waiting on you, Leo. It’s time to do the right thing and oppose this deal for being the piece of shit you well know it to be — and call for the war against this and all such trade deals that everyone who cares about American jobs is ready and willing to fight.

About FDL Action
Thanks Jane. Nice to hear the machinists are leading the fight. (Does this old machinists heart good)
If the AFLCIO is a democratic organization then the proper thing to do is call up the 52(is it 52?) board members and give them 24 hours to decide. If they decide no then the answer is NO!
May the high and mighty flying spaghetti monster make sure the answer is no because silence means the other side wins.
This is just awesome Jane! Looks like this is the start of the 2012 presidential campaign. Right. Now.
GM and Ford are quiet I guess they are already on board to move their plants to South Korea. We bailed out the car makers just to outsource everything?
knowing obama, it seems he might have penned the outsourcing to china for gm to get that government loan
I wish I could get accustomed to this type of thing happening. I’m tired of being shocked every day. Obama needs to hear from the people if we can ever get through that bubble.
Imagine all those union autoworkers instead of eating steak 3 times a week start eating Ramen everyday and have Spam 3 times a week.
The Farm State’s just might want to consider whether South Korea is that big of a market to trade the formerly wealthy American market in for a poor American market.
Why are they still silent? Is it possible they will join the veal pen, too?
And there are the tv idjits babbling about O pulling out a victory from the embarrassing failure to get an agreement at the meeting…never mind what’s in the agreement.
It’s hard not to give in to despair.
He would have been better off giving them Taiwan and South Korea.
Hey 1
! Jane on tv! this topic!
Jane is Vladimir Lenin to that RedState anonymity. Maybe that clown should read a bit of history.
It takes how much corn to create a pound of beef? Americans lose jobs thanks to this trade deal South Korea will not replace American demand for steak. This trade deal kills the market for steak and that results in cheaper corn prices.
Cheaper corn means more tax money to farmers. Support this bill and you support higher taxes.
Of course the anti tax Tea Baggers will stay quiet on this like the bought and paid for weasels they are.
Why do we need a trade deal with South Korea we have tens of thousands of troops there they should have no tariffs on our goods!
Whats she saying?
Quite agree!! Good post, Jane, and go get ‘em if you’re on tv. I’m so angry about this that I could spit nails.
I was reluctantly in favor of the auto bail out *mainly* so that US workers could keep their jobs. Now this???? Completely unsurprised at the weaseling perfidy of scum-sucking Obama, but I’m about to blow my stack anymore.
AFL-CIO: we US workers need to hear from you ASAP!!!
I wonder how effective jane would be as a politician
we would lose her here at the lake but we would gain a real voice for the very vast majority of people
Naw, he’s too busy trying to revise it.
Sign this deal Obama and then tell why one reason why any union member would have to vote Dem?
that piece jane linked to tells everyone to sit back, grab some popcorn as we eat our own “”mcoy vs mcoy”
they don’t get it yet, obama is not one of our own he’s a hatfield masquerading as a mccoy
Sign me up for that campaign but what office would give her the most power? Senator or depending on the state’s rules Governor?
Leo Gerard is probably in a state of shock
A lot of decent, kind loving, warm hearted, people can’t deal with the devil at first.
It is hard to attack someone that says they love you, while stabbing you in the chest at the same time. It takes a special person or persons to deal with this type of Devil.
Know Thy Enemy!
Think about it like this, OBAMA destroys the middle class of the USA, with no remorse, yes he is killing your kids, my kids, future, and laughing about it! people
Obama is not some wuzzy, weak minded, fool, he is a cold blooded tool the elites developed to destroy democrats, and their followers.
Leo Gerard is probably like most people, just trying to live a simple life. Now his simple life has change for ever, he has seen the DEVIL, and knows what the Devil is capable of doing.
Obama is no JOKE!!! Here you have a Man, who lets nothing get in his way, he sticks to his mission, which is DESTROY THE USA MIDDLE CLASS. (Obama passed the bob dole health care bill, and he has not skip one beat, 80% of the nation hated the bill, Obama said SO WHAT!)
So progressives have better develop the same will and drive Obama has to fight Obama.
Obama has no intentions of winning in 2012. Obama knows black candidates win state wide re- elections only 10% of the time. Remember Obama was the only Black Senator in the Senate in 2006.
One has to admire Obama cold blooded attitude about killing the MIDDLE CLASS, it takes a very bad man, to support a NAFTA trade deal in the middle of a depression.
How has the far Right responded to the blatant undermining of US sovereignty by this treaty, as pointed out in Jane’s earlier post and my comment #97 on it? Didn’t some of them oppose NAFTA? If we can get an ad hoc alliance with them on KORUS/KAFTA, we’re hardly in a position to turn down their help.
Although I agree that it would be better if the AFL-CIO could take the lead and win.
Also, approval of any treaty can be blocked by one-third-plus-one of the Senate. Can we get the votes, and if so, how?
The auto bailout may well have been the ALLY Financial bailout with lipstick.
I’m almost as disappointed in Trumka as I am in Obama (well Obama by a factor of 100x over Trumka). Why an intelligent and articulate guy like Trumpa is silent so far on this, well except for praising Obama in early Nov. for standing up to Korea is puzzling. He’s as bad as Obama’s overriding obsession with compromise(though it’s a farce on Obama’s part) in believing Obama or the DINO’s have Labors back. Organized labor brought us the middle class. Now AFL-CIO leaders seem totally ineffective in educating the middle class what they owe Unions or rallying the troops.
Looks to me like the Unions are going to go offshoring too. I can’t believe they are falling down on this one. They will do what they have to do to stay alive and taking in contributions.
The whole thing looks like a switch in their base operations.
I agree with your comment, except destroying the middle class is a byproduct, not the aim of the big O.
that is a frightening perspective
double-check the assumption that this is a “treaty.” I probably made the same mistake until I noticed all the emphasis on members of the House who are supporting the deal. Wasn’t there a change during Clinton Admin. to put trade deals on a “fast track” so that only a majority of each of House and Senate can adopt the deals? It may not be a formal “treaty” in constitutional terms. Sorry to put the legwork on you, but I am calling Dem Senate offices to beg them to vote against any taxcut bonuses for the uber-rich.
Agreed, but how else can one explain their silence?
Maybe we ought to start working to help Obama get the GOP nomination in 2012.
it’s probably the aim, a middle class means an educated masses, they do not want that, the intention is quite likely to destroy the middle class and re-awaken a robber baron economy
I guess the same way we explain the silence on other blogs concerning obama’ corporate initiatves
they are only partially comming aware the wolf in sheeps clothing, the trojan horse that is named obama
maybe they are saying to themselves;
“this has to be better then it looks on the surface”
let’s hope they discover the truth and join in getting obama a president non grata
Haha, ” [Your name], can you donate just $3 to help me keep fighting for the moneyed interests but talk like I am doing the opposite?”
We have no reason now! He pissed on our head and then told us it was raining regarding EFCA. Dirty two faced bastard!!!
Eric Holder has his knives out to protect the Bush/Cheney mob.
The perps of 9/11 must be protected at all costs.
Good old Matt McKinnon, never a person to mince words.
What may be happening with Union’s Leaders is they do not know and understand the enemy they are dealing with.
One does not bring a knife to a gun fight. I think we have a lot of Union Leaders showing up to fights with knives.
Trumka, has the power to destroy Obama, and his types, either he does not know how to, or he doesn’t want to destroy them.
Howard Dean scared Dems like Obama, Howard Dean built a network that connected Dems to their Base, Obama first action of business was to destroy the Howard Dean network. Why? Obama knows a UNITED DEM PARTY hurts him.
Re Build the Howard Dean network and the progressives will come. Controlling the Dem party is easy, control the voters, you control the DLC.
Hey, he can’t do it all by himself. I blame the do nothing Dems as well. I watched Punch and Judy shows till I’m sick. There is no real intent to stop or move the repugs out of the way.
Please tell Obama other ambitions
President Obama Sec of State Clinton when you negotiate a trade deal please remember a few things
1) trade deals should have benefits for both parties, failing that trade deals should have benefits for us!
2) leverage we have something South Korea’s leadership at least wants tens of thousands of troops in South Korea.
Do not tell me we can’t move those troops the threat of moving those troops should get us anything we want.
3) Obama, Hilary we know you both want to be President next term this deal kills that. The Tea Baggers will run against this deal please wait to pass this deal until the Tea Baggers get sworn in don’t take the entire Dem party down with you.
Oh, Jeez. Am I correct in remembering this also happened with the Peru Unfair Trade Act (which Obama also supported)? The AFL-CIO stayed neutral, clearing the way for passage?
I have to say that I do think H. Dean made this possible. His 50 state strategy worked.
Know Thy Enemies!
do you think OBAMA and Hillary are complete morons? they are not
Only a very bad person, with very bad intentions, would brag about a NAFTA type of deal in the middle of a Depression.
Progressives like labor Unions must face the music, we have some very bad trojan horses inside the Democratic Party.
We can’t keep denying the OBVIOUS!
the democratic party has been invaded by rockefellar republicans who got kick out of the GOP a long time ago.
Why isn’t the UAW membership going ape shit over King doing this? They’re probably mostly unaware, since it’s not in the news. I am printing your two articles, Jane, along with the linked articles, for my AUW family members to take to the plants with them this week. Now I need to call my senators to yell at them (particularly Levin).
Sample email to a liberal Senator on KORUS (based on Jane’s earlier post):
Sample email to a conservative Senator on KORUS:
These are rough drafts. If anyone thinks they can do better, please feel free to rewrite!
For a little variety they say “Fancy Feast” makes for a sublime meatloaf.
oh, good, yer calling Senators! please include a beg for your Senators to vote no on any deal that gives taxcut bonuses to the ultra-rich. PCCC and DFA are running fone banks today to whip the Senate Dems against any WH deal that gives more taxcuts to the wealthy. ANY deal. We don’t give a shit what else the GOP uses to try to sucker the Dems into voting for the rich. We have to stop these taxcut bonuses NOW, when we are in the last days of Dem majority control. The uber-rich will never quit, they will feed their greed for taxcut bonuses by screwing up Social Security & Medicare for generations.
Check out the fone banks here at PCCC and at DFA.
I was intrigued and so did a quick search and found that “fast track” was initiated in the seventies and allowed to expire after NAFTA but reinstituted by Bush in 2002 and expired in 2007.
Isn’t the AG one of the members of the executive branch allowed by the heinous Patriot Act to designate someone a terrorist? Is this the significant action? Did the AG just sign Julian’s death warrant? Will Americans extra-judicially assassinate an Australian because he tells the truth?
Those posters equating Obama with Hitler don’t seem so amusing any more.
I haven’t been able to determine so far whether it would be a treaty or not. Any such “fast track” arrangement as you describe would be unconstitutional – the Constitution provides only one process for making treaties – but if our charming Supreme Court has chosen to turn a blind eye to a blatant violation of the Constitution, it wouldn’t be the first time.

You are projecting your imagination onto the union leaders.
Union rank and file and the individual unions aren’t the same as their leaders and some of their leaders are compromised by design.
Google AFL-CIO, CIA, Chamber of Commerce, NED, and USAID. They all work hand in hand either sponsoring and encouraging color revolutions to bringing them our brand of weak democracy, liberty (license to steal), and kleptocratic capitalism.
This group destroys unions in other countries. It’s no surprise when they turn their parasitism on us when they’ve been so prolific at feeding at the carcasses of other countries.
Old? What are you now, 46?
Thanks. From the Wiki article, it does look as though the constitutional process for treaty making has been subverted.
I thought Assange had some truly secret docs he was holding onto, as insurance?
done!
Great Post!!!
thanks for sharing the info.
:)
keep the truth flowing
it funny how people think things change. they don’t
your post is very true, and most people have no idea who and what their true enemy is.
thanks
Kinda reminds me of the health care “bill.”
No, no, don’t look at the details! He SIGNED a BILL. That is a VICTORY!!!
Talk about buyers’ remorse [starting with 2008 itself] . . .
Well I said aim, though he is ambitious. Talking actions v rhetoric, his support of Phama, HMO’s, Wall St. bailout vs Main St., leaking weak pre-negotiation talking points, never ending war using conventional tactics(no strategy except support of LM, Grumman, Hallaburton, BAE, etc) against asymmetrical forces and Korea giveaway trade deal to name a few from the top of my head.
Why? Ask him; though you will not get an honest answer.
One of the dumps is being distributed. There is no key, at present, to decrypt it. If something happens to him, the key will be released if it has to be delivered by Pony Express.
As an aside, I was wondering why the AF connected 1700+ PS3′s together to make a cheap supercomputer. Could it be an attempt to break the encryption early?
It’s clear to me Assange has released the “nice” cables up to this point. They seem very tame. And perhaps the dump is the BofA documents he has said they have.
The rhetoric suggests government behavior will inevitably lead to the release of the key.
I’d bet on it.
The HCR could be dramatically improved if the mandate were yanked. It could pay for itself if there were a robust public option. It would be hailed world-wide if we had universal coverage. I liked 100% of Kucinich’s bill. I like about 30% of this mess, which is about how I felt about the status quo prior to HCR’s passage.
Honestly it was for me and a lot of other folks the last straw. The honeymoon was over. We all got in bed with a two-timer. When I read what was signed into law I was upset I’d given the charlatan President my support, period. For anything. The least the SOB could have done was attach a Bush-era signing statement saying “Ha, ha! Joke’s on you! Now, watch my swing.”
I called Senator Brown’s office today and urged him to stay committed to opposing this trade agreement.
That was when I knew Rahm Emmanuel was the dog in the manger, when he shut down his committee and rammed thru Bush’s free trade agreements before fast track expired.
My heart hit my feet when Oilbomber appointed him CoS
Jane, I hope Leo goes with you and not Obama. It’s really critical that he does. If he goes that way maybe Trumka can come around and maybe we can begin a serious Obama get out movement.
They actually titled it the “PUTA” act?
It’s time to shock his ass. How do we do it? Form a coalition with the Tea Party to balance the budget.
I’ve thought for a long time, that if I ever ended up in politics against my will I’d ask Jane to be my Chief of Staff.
I think she’d be much better at that than being stuck as a politician.
I was feeling a bit bad the other day for calling Stern a punk back when he was making nicey nice noises re Catfood. Sorry Andrew, even more so if you played rope a dope with them.
Heh.
The AFL-CIO needs to wake up. They’re only on the team when the Administration wants something. If they don’t take a stand and demand something in return, well, we train people how we expect to be treated. Oh yeah good luck getting that EFCA vote.
Forget calling yourselves the “middle class.” Historically the middle class referred to small business owners and merchants, not employees.
For a breif period following WW2 when American factories were the only ones left standing in the world, the laborers had some decent benefits and wages. Who started labor on the path down? Who started the myth that tax cuts for the rich are good for working people? John F. Kennedy. Thank you Democrats.
The unions have lost their power by allowing themselves to be divided and conquered one at a time.
Have you forgotten how to struggle?
Why can’t American unions learn something from the French? When one French union goes out, they all do! Every single one. Did any of you see the reaction to Sarkozy’s attempt to raise the retirement age to 62? Riots in the streets!
AFL-CIO when are you calling a general strike?
