I’m about to go on a panel at the NORML convention in Portland, OR to discuss California’s Prop 19 and how it will affect the future of the marijuana legalization efforts. Joining me on the panel are:
- Paul Armentano, Deputy Director, NORML
- Ethan Nadelmann, Ph.D, Executive Director, Drug Policy Alliance (invited)
- Matt Welch, Editor, Reason Magazine
- Alice Huffman, President of the California NAACP
- Moderated by Allen St. Pierre, President of NORML
This will be a great discussion with some big players in Proposition 19 and the marijuana legalization movement. Tune in now and watch the panel live. I’ll put up my slides afterwards.

About FDL Action
Teddy and I were in the audience waving and Michael shot us a “don’t embarrass me, Mom & Dad” look.
Didn’t matter. We clapped & cheered like idiots.
Paul Armentano is doing a fantastic job.
Really wish I was there.
Michael presents REALLY well. Great command of the material, and a nice flow/pace.
Hats off!
Paul rocks. If you ever want to know anything about any statistic ever compiled, Paul is one stop shopping.
We’re so happy to have him on the board of Just Say Now.
I’ve known Paul for 15 years or more. Great to have him out in California.
Wish I had heard Michael… Looking forward to Ethan, and Allen’s remarks are sounding good too.
I’ve been missing NORML conferences for a few years due to money issues. If it had been in Oakland this year I’d be attending; Allen and Keith both told me scholarships are available.
Nice Fundraising – Stuff that’s usually only talked about at ARO (Alliance of Reform Organizations) … Just Say Now got brought into ARO, right?
Lewis is Progressive insurance, Zimmer as Ethan said is Men’s Warehouse. Sperling came in late – University of Phoenix.
nope
new kids on the block, still earning our stripes. Tons of props from the community today, which was great.
GoTV!
Do Voter ID work now. put $500,000 into ID now. And use the phone banking techniques from Holder’s campaign for GoTV starting with early voting.
All of the heavy hitters are really open to being button holed and schmoozed.
FDL and Just Say Now could be a lead organization for the GoTV work. Plays on our strengths.
Check facebook – there’s someone you should speak with.
Mikki Norris “Cannabis Consumers Campaign” is a place that tried to do away with the pot smokers closet.
Tom Ammianno was pushing legalization in the legislature. Not a ballot initiative. My local assembly man said it had no chance of getting a hearing.
Candy being given out at 4:20?
Marsha Rosenbaum – author of a really good guide to kids and drugs, DPA.
Mikki Norris, mentioned up thread.
Nice shout out for FDL!
Thanks for all the observations, wmd1961, have enjoyed reading them
I’ve been involved on this issue since 1979. Took a bit of a break from 81-93. Started working on it again and haven’t stopped. A group I was involved in back in Indiana put up “relegalize” billboards in ’94, then got a grant from DPF (Now DPA) to keep them up for 2 years. Since then I got to know most of the people working on the issue at the national level, attending NORML conferences annually from ’98-2006, DPF conferences, etc.
I miss seeing activist friends the last few years. Last time I saw everyone was at the conference closing party in Hollywood, think it was 2007.
Michael, you did a great job, hope we didn’t mortify you from the back of the room, but we are very proud of you up there with all these heavy hitters in the POT movement, explaining how to win elections.
It’s simply terrific, and you’ve done wonderful work for FireDogLake here this week.
Thanks!
Where can I find the slides?
