Frosh Sen. Michael Bennet Won’t Offer Public Option Amendment, Still Seems Not to Understand How Legislative Process Works

By: Jon Walker Wednesday March 24, 2010 3:38 pm

Oh, poor, poor Michael Bennet (D-CO). He just doesn’t seem to understand how the legislative process works. He took to the Senate floor to praise what the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”–which was signed yesterday by President Obama–will do. That bill is now law. Today they are working on a completely different bill, a [...]

The Second Day Of Senate Consideration Of Reconciliation “Fixes”

By: Jon Walker Wednesday March 24, 2010 8:36 am

This may be Democrats last chance to improve health care reform and try to make it even more popular before the November election. Sadly, it appears an opportunity wasted.

Obama Hosts Anti-Abortion Signing Ceremony

By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday March 24, 2010 7:59 am

The President is hosting a signing ceremony for his Executive Order on abortion today. Greg Sargent wrote a fascinating post about the incredible lengths the White House went to in order to woo the anti-abortion Democrats to support the health care bill, with endless personal entreaties, meetings and accommodations. The pro-choice Democrats, on the other [...]

Pelosi: Heritage Foundation Designed Health Care Bill

By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday March 24, 2010 7:04 am

I notice the Washington Examiner thinks the health care bill is really, really bad. I guess this must represent their break from the Heritage Foundation. One would think the Speaker of the House is familiar with the origins of the health care bill, and she thoughtfully sent this around on Sunday to help the progressive groups who whipped for it back under the bus.

Maybe it’s one of those “new realignments” everyone is talking about

Hey Colorado: Help Deliver Public Option Petitions to Michael Bennet Tomorrow

By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday March 23, 2010 7:42 pm

Michael Bennet was all about the public option when it didn’t matter.  Now that the health care bill has passed and the President has signed it, there’s no way that introducing an amendment can stop it from going through — so why is Bennet nowhere to be found? Thirty four thousand people have signed the [...]

Pelosi: Health Care Bill a Conservative Bill (Time to Go Back Under the Bus, Veal Pen)

By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday March 23, 2010 4:58 pm

Just before the House passed the health care bil, Nancy Pelosi sent out a letter.    In it, she said that “An op-ed by E.J. Dionne on Friday reveals that the current health reform legislation pending before Congress was “built on a series of principles that Republicans espoused for years.”  She bolded Dionne’s headline: Why Democrats Are [...]

House Will Likely Need to Vote on Reconciliation Package Again; Time to “Fix It Later” Is Now

By: Jon Walker Tuesday March 23, 2010 1:58 pm

On Sunday, the House passed the Senate health care bill and a reconciliation package that contains a number of so-called fixes. That reconciliation package is being taken up today in the Senate. Because of the strange nature of the Byrd rule, which requires every part of the reconciliation package to affect the budget, it is [...]

Senate Begins Consideration of Reconciliation Sidecar

By: Jon Walker Tuesday March 23, 2010 11:45 am

The Senate has just began consideration of the reconciliation “sidecar” bill, HR 4872, the “Heath Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010” (PDF). The bill is meant to fix some of the problems with the recently passed health care bill, and deal with student loan reform. Democrats have foolishly decided to actively work against any [...]

Will Michael Bennet’s Senate Seat Be the First Casualty of the Public Option?

By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday March 23, 2010 9:27 am

I was on the premiere of John King Live on CNN last night, talking about the primary problems Michael Bennet now faces as he moves away from his commitment made only a month ago to an up-or-down vote on the public option in the Senate. The Denver Post also writes about it this morning: In [...]
