Today, at 11:15 AM EDT, President Obama will sign the HR 3590, the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,” making the bill law. Politically, it will be billed as a big win for the President, who has spent over a year trying to get a health care insurance reform bill passed. This moment could possibly go down as one of this presidency’s biggest accomplishments.
Soon after the bill is signed into law, the Senate will begin consideration on HR 4872, the “Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act” (at 2:15 PM EST). This reconciliation bill contains some “fixes” to the health care bill, as well as student loan reform. Because reconciliation bills have a set debate time, they can’t be filibustered, requiring only the constitutional simple majority for passage. The consideration of the reconciliation bill is expected to take the Senate about a week.
This reconciliation bill might be the last chance for Democrats to deal with looming, politically damaging problems caused by the inclusion of an individual mandate, enforced by the IRS, which forces people to buy private insurance. Reconciliation could be used to strip the individual mandate out of the new law, or it can be used to add a public alternative, which makes the individual mandate significantly less unpopular. Foolish Democrats in the Senate seem dead set against dealing with what will likely be a toxic issue for them in November.

About FDL Action
I think most people don’t know beans about the bill and we’re overestimating the political fallout. All most people hear is health care insurance, and that’s beginning to sound good. The more problematic parts of the bill don’t kick in until after 2012, so if you haven’t been following the discussion, you won’t see any problems. You will see that very soon students can remain on their parents’ insurance.
Won’t surprise me if the hooha fades from memory by November.
People have been having trouble with Mozilla lately, I’ve noticed. Apparently there’s a security flaw, might want to update…

Reconciliation fixes won’t pass. Some Blue Dog in the Senate will try to hold them up for personal gain, and Obama will just walk away. Rotating villains, right?
We’ve had this major fracas over healthcare in the past year, with the issue dominating Congress, and the media all over it. But if you went out on the street and asked 100,000 Americans to name 3 things that are in the bill, they wouldn’t have a clue. What a country…
About six months ago, I wrote a diary about the reasons that the Sibel Edmonds story scares us.
With the passing of the HCR bill, we’re very close to leaving behind the first
dog-and-pony-showall-consuming priority of the Obama administration, and we’re about to see the dawn of the nextdistractionhigh-priority issue. You can bet we’re going to find ourselves embroiled in another devisive battle, maybe it will be over immigration reform, or the repeal of DADT, or a battle royal over the buget deficit.
There’s one thing you can bet, we’re not going to hear a lot about our legislators acting as paid agents of foreign nations or the black market in nuclear technology that they operate.
You won’t see any real progress on enacting regulations to stop the FIRE interests from sinking our economy by running their own private casinos with our tax money.
And you sure won’t hear much serious conversation on putting an end to senseless wars.
My bet is we’re in for a lot more republican sponsored teabuggering, and more democratic helplessness, and then they’ll tell us it’s time to vote again, time to exercise our constitutional right to make believe that what we want and what we need is somehow related to what they do in Washington.
Uh huh! Ummm. Death Panels!! Ummmm, oh I got it, ummm Government Takeover of MY Healthcare!! And, ummmmm, ummmm, a rotten, illegal, fascists corporatist mandate to buy a crappy product from a private insurance company! (the last one is actually in there and must go)

Will Obama issue a signing statement on this bill?
I would agree with you, except that Republicans and their propaganda outlets will be making sure that people know.
Come on Jon, catch up! Dem. legislators KNOW if YOU’d just stop your negative reporting of the Bill’s few shortcomings everything would be fine & America would be a better place to live. Nothing’s perfect Jon, they’ve worked tirelessly on this Bill – and they did it for the American people. They’ve done the very best they could do. Really it’s one heck of a feat that they accomplished what they did, with the Repubs and the lunatic lefty “fringe” all sabotaging their efforts every step of the way.
And, it’s a lot better than nothing, right? :>))
Biden to Obama “passion matched with principle”
Nothing wrong with continuing to push hard for making it better. Many Reps have mentioned how the fact that progressives have not stopped pushing is one of the big reasons that they have been able to even pass this flawed legislation. Senator Brown, Senator Harkin Congressman Kucinich, Pres Obama and many more have said KEEP PUSHING.
I hope the hell that Obama gives credit to Pelosi, Ted Kennedy, Dingell, Senator Brown and all others who have pushed so damn hard for this legislation. Thank them. give credit where credit is due.
Obama “This Year” Reforms that will take place now
Tax credits to small businesses
Tens of thousands of people with pre-existing conditions will be able to get health care
Insurance people can not drop sick people
Preventive care will be covered
Adults up to 26 years of age can stay on parents insurance
Senior who fall in the donut hole will receive help
Free Preventive care for seniors with no co pays
Obama thanking folks. Hope to hell he mentions Ted Kennedy
Closest I have ever seen Obama coming to the edge of tears. Will he mention Ted Kennedy? Will he mention Congressman Dingell?
The C-span camera person went to Caroline Kennedy instead of Vicki Kennedy when Obama mentioned Vicki. Glad Obama is focusing on Ted’s endless efforts for health care reform
Rotating villains indeed. excellent phrase
The Democrats have signed their political obituaries with the passage of this awful bill. Nothing to bring down costs, no public option, restrictions on access to abortions, penalties imposed for failing to buy into the private insurance system, people still denied care even with the toothless pre-existing conditions clause because people can’t get health insurance unless they pay for it — and they still won’t be able to pay for it, the list of evils in this monstrosity goes on for miles.
Obama signing legislation with every pen with those who have worked so hard for this behind him.
Obama “we are done”
It is a start. Keep pushing

This is not a “start”. More likely it’s the end…of the Democratic majority in the House, possibly in the Senate as well.
The public opposes this bill, and no “sell job” is going to change that. The President failed to frame the debate on health care reform from the beginning, and the debate is over…there’s no reason to believe he’ll somehow, magically change minds now.
There’s no magic left for Barack Obama.
I agree with you. Most people will probably see no change (for them) and wonder what all the fuss was about. In November, the economy will have much more effect than this bill.
You can ride the fake bandwagon into hell….I believe this is my stop. I’ll just grab my coat…..
Isn’t it funny, when we were pushing, the Obamabots screamed at us that we were purists, and don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, etc.
And now that the bill is signed, sealed, delivered…..and fucking DONE….now they tell us to push.
Tell ya what…you’ll hear from us again when your hero starts the push to reduce social security and medicare benefits via his BIPARTISAN! panel of halfwits. In all this concern over the deficits, never hear about the tax increase for those making over $250k that he talked about during his campaign?
He’s a Republican.
You know how kids tune out parents who yell a lot? Lots of people do the same with political uproar. The Republicans are mostly preaching to the choir, at this point. Sure the baggies are as ugly as ever, but anyone who got a load of the town hall hooliganism already knows what the score is with that mob. For people who only give politics the once over lightly, this is a done deal and they’ll worry about the details as the details arise. I’m not sure they’ve been paying much close attention all along.
I think we care more and attend more than most; we’re a so-called distinct minority. And as the Republicans have demonstrated, determined distinct minorities can leave their mark. Where now, guys?
Just opportunists, Obama and Rahm. Chicago is a Dem town and they wanted a ticket to the top. I think many politicians choose their party affiliation by which party will get them where they want to go.
Leen, You can push until the cows come home. This HealthCare Bill is a TRAVESTY & it’s EXACTLY the Bill Obama wanted. “Where now” for me is to do my darnedest to hold my elected Dems accountable for what they’ve done. I will campaign against them, I will contribute & raise funds against them as I did against Coatley (to send a message to Obama he refused to take seriously) and I will vote against them at every level at every opportunity, every corrupt, amoral one of them. The Democratic Party abandoned its loyal constituency, it would be folly to continue to support it.
“Tax credits to small businesses” WHO’S PAYING FOR THEM?
“Tens of thousands of people with pre-existing conditions will be able to get health care” HOW MUCH CAN INS. CO. RAISE RATES?
“Insurance people can not drop sick people” BUT THEY CAN RAISE RATES.
“Preventive care will be covered” NOT WHAT WE WAITED 30 YEARS FOR.
“Adults up to 26 years of age can stay on parents insurance”
THEY WOULDN’T HAVE TO IF WE HAD COMPETITION & CONTROLS.
“Senior who fall in the donut hole will receive help” NOT ENOUGH HELP, THAT’S FOR SURE.
“Free Preventive care for seniors with no co pays.” A TRILLION DOLLARS AND THIS IS WHAT WE GET?
Obama thanking folks. INSURANCE INDUSTRY THANKING OBAMA BIG TIME !!
SHAMEFUL, ABSOLUTELY SHAMEFUL.
