Natasha Chart gives a heartfelt personal account of being 21 and on the receiving end of reproductive coercion. “Progressive” men have decreed that women are being “purists” to oppose a health care bill that would deal the worst blow to reproductive rights in 35 years, but as Natasha says, they’re not the ones who will have to pay the price:
Women, who earn less, who are commonly responsible for the most time-consuming parts of the parenting saga, who are discriminated against by their employers for being parents, who are more likely to be abused, who bear all the health risks of pregnancy and childbirth, can never be fully equal in a society that doesn’t prioritize and normalize our access to all forms of reproductive health care. When our health care is stigmatized, we are stigmatized. When it seems normal that men we don’t know get to decide if we’ll be forced into a two decade commitment, it’s only natural that men we do know might think they have the right to decide that for us, too.
If you still want to pass this health insurance reform bill, and I understand why so many people do, understand the cost. Somewhere, right now, he’s taking her lunch money, and this bill will let him force her into motherhood, too.
Planned Parenthood was bought off with the Bernie Sanders carve-out that will offer loan forgiveness to their employees and money to their clinics, just as the unions (who were going to rise up and “defend our sisters” against Bart Stupak) were bought off with $6 billion in co-op money and language for qualification that points straight at them. And NARAL — well, they just suck.
Diana DeGette won’t release her letter with 41 signatures so we’ll never know who made this promise and broke it:
We will not vote for a conference report that contains language that restricts women’s right to choose any further than current law.
There’s a grand charade that somehow the Nelson language in the Senate is okay because Bart Stupak’s is worse. There’s hardly any difference between the two, and the ultimate impact is the same. Two weeks ago, Planned Parenthood called the Nelson language on choice “unacceptable.” Now….crickets.
Let’s just recall that in addition to codifying the Hyde Amendment, the Senate bill:
- Allows states to opt out of allowing plans to cover abortion in the insurance exchanges, a clear violation of Roe v. Wade. Since some state medicaid programs cover abortion as long as it is paid for with state money, the Hyde amendment (current law) obviously does allow insurance to cover abortion as long as it is paid through a separate non-federal funds.
- It prohibits insurance companies by law from taking into account cost savings when estimating the costs of abortion care, which raises premiums, thus limiting access
- It includes “conscience clause” language that protects both individuals and entities that refuse to provide, pay for, provide coverage for, or refer for abortion.
And a George Washington University School of Public Health study says that the “spillover effect” the Nelson language will have on abortion coverage will mean it has the same effect as Stupak.
Anyone who is whipping for this bill is whipping against choice. The end. They own it…and also its impact on the most vulnerable women in our society, who shouldn’t have to sell their reproductive rights off in exchange for health care.

About FDL Action
So now we know what happened during the two meetings Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards had with the White House at the beginning and end of June 2009, just about the time that Pitts-Stupak was getting a head of steam.
She guaranteed her organization’s longevity.
neo-liberal ? post-racial ?, nah, it’s neo victorian
close your eyes, open your legs, and think of the Party
Collateral damage:
Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex cited in sexual assaults
Psychiatric patient became pregnant
Milwuakee County Executive, Scott Walker is a Sarah Palin wannabe, running for Wisconsin Governor. He will probably try to privatize air. This little disaster could end up costing Milwaukee County $60 million in federal funds, but Scott is anti choice, so I am sure they had no money for birth control.
whatever role Planned Parenthood or NARAL has to play in the progressive movement is not one–I see now–that has anything to do with action or forward momentum or any risk-taking. They are power-players with a stake in the DC status quo. We can expect from them more or less what we expect from Congress.
We do seem to be about there. Personally, when I have a child, I’m sending the little one to work in a coal mine to earn her keep. There probably won’t be a public school for her anyway.
My wife runs an independent Women’s health clinic and is at constant loggerheads with corporate planned parenthood. PP, like NARAL, have gone totally corporate. PLease do not donate to PP or NARAL only donate to your local health clinics and NARAL state chapters.
It would seem that this bill is intended to put independent women’s health centers out of business as most of the clients are unable to afford insurance as it is. Now with the need to buy special “abortion insurance” and with the price of insurance sure to rise 100% or more we shall be back to clothes hanger medicine. I have no idea how long we will be able to survive as PP will lose money to undercut our prices in the hopes of putting us out of business. PP the WallMart of Women’s Health care.
Interestingly the price of IUDs (Mirena) was just almost doubled to almost four times the price in Canada.
mad, mad progressive props to your wife. I have heard from so many women working at the State and local level within PP and NARAL – “disheartened” is putting it mildly
Class warfare has never seemed like a more appropriate term for this.
Rich lobbyists making sure they’ll stay rich by keeping the fight going.
People understand that there’s only a reason for Stupak or Nelson amendments because they didn’t expand existing federal programs, but created “exchanges” to funnel money to private insurance companies, yes?
Because Stupak and Nelson didn’t have an issue with federal programs already covered by Hyde. It was only when they started running services through private companies that there was a problem.
Lysistrata was right.
Fuck ‘em if they can’t take one for the team. Democrats don’t need pro-choice women to win elections, amirite?
I’m waiting for my email from Boxer about how she’s out there supporting choice. Also crickets.
Hey now, we need lots and lots of poor kids from unplanned pregnancies to fight our future war with Iran and China.
When you think about it, Repugnicans are really pro-abortion, just very late term abortion, like 17-20 years late term.
This is yet one more tragic part of this healthcare devolution. This is so unfair to women. And where are the men? Who did I see in clinics, bringing their children in for healthcare? Women. Who did I see at school meetings with teachers and their children? Women. Who did I see taking care of our children in the communities we live in? Predominantly women. Why shouldn’t women receive the best care we have to offer?
I only see one solution. Elect more pro-choice women so that they can stand together as a large group.
Purists?
There’s no being just a little pregnant.
The purist argument is kinda built into the equation by definition.
Fail. This bill is being supported by any number of elected pro-choice women.
Can legislation authorizing men establishing a Red Tent for their female family members be far behind?
We are well on our way to “Idiocracy” Mike Judge seems to understand.
haha, it does have its advantages…a three to five day holiday from chores and those overbearing guys when feeling a bit cranky and uncomfortable. But I’m pro choice on that too.
now you’re just being “shrill” :D
It’s all about control. Control the children. Control the women. Control non-whites. Control the unwashed masses. Fuck. That.
I’m gonna get “shriller.” *g* How ya doin’?
It would help if the press wouldn’t publish, unquestioningly, bullshit about this bill funding abortions when it does the exact opposite.
At least we’re on record here. If this bill passes — and I still have my doubts about that — then we will have, if nothing else, the bittersweet pleasure of saying “We told you so” when all that we have predicted on this comes to pass.
caught just a bit of Maddow with Ezra last night – He was holding forth on the Pre Existing Conditions lie, and I was taken aback when she didn’t challenge him
same boat. am actually thinking I should put some $$$ away and make a trip to Vegas in June, there’s a list of um, progressives, I’d like see mano y mano
Easy for you to say.
*g*
Well then, they can’t choose Viagra!
If coat-hanger Democrats aren’t causing Choice to circle down the drain, they are shrinking it down to a size where they can drown it in Norquist’s bathtub!
yep. they just can’t control themselves!
LOL
I respect defending one’s principles. Bart Stupak does that in spades. We will not find principled defenders of economic justice and human rights in representatives from the professional political class.
The task ahead is huge, and time is running out. If we continue engaging the concept of lesser evilism as a necessary though unfortunate option, then at least let’s be clear about where that lesser evil resides. From my vantage point, our government in toto represents the greatest evil at this stage. Ergo,…..
what’s the deal?
Straight from the veal pen:
Nancy Keenan on the NARAL website:
“President Obama’s speech today reaffirmed the urgent need to make health care more accessible and affordable. We commend his leadership on this issue and will continue to work with the president, our allies in Congress, and other progressive partners in making this critical change a reality.”
Pathetic, just pathetic. I’ve given NARAL my last dime.
There’s an @#$%^&* over at Digby’s, arguing that the only way women can get pregnant against their will is rape, so we should just ‘keep our knees together’.
He’s not getting much support, either.
I thought the Dems had this debate when I was in Jr high?
Stupak’s principles are whatever benefits him. The rest of us aren’t worth his efforts.
(Hadn’t you noticed that he thinks that women aren’t really people?)
It’s the same as elections: Give the people two really crappy choices to vote on and then pretend that we all had made a free choice.
Clearly advancing fascism is more important to the powers that be. Anyone or anything that stands in the way of fascism must be destroyed.
‘zup dos !
I was referring to the many now extolling how this bill when passed will end recission or denial for pre existing conditions. uh no. Big Insurance has 4 more years to deny coverage to everyone but “newly enrolled children”
The banking industry has taken notice of how “progressives” were rolled on health care reform. Just sit back and wait till we capitulate.
Does this mean that a D&C following a miscarriage won’t be covered either?
As far as I know, the insurance billing code for a D&C is the same whether is’s an elective abortion or a necessary and sometimes life saving procedure.
Amen Sister!!!!
God damned right. All who SUPPORT this bill OWN it, and all it’s parts. Make them own it. Always. Never forget who owns this POS.
Cause they also own the end of all hopes for Single Payer. They own it all baby. Wear it with pride.
PJ, why is it you always misread me? I’m not agreeing with his principles, just saying that principled stands are an admirable trait, currently non existent in the Dem. Party.
Best of luck while we push this particular battle to the end.
But when it’s over–either way– realize that the country is still worth fighting for. It did, after all, finally elect a black man as president.
Maybe we should take that as our only winnings this time around and walk away from the table for now.
Remember, it was the people themselves who chose a black president. And they probably did that because they were hoping to achieve the same visions that we’ve been fighting for.
Choice seems to be a card democrats have decided they can play away when they need to look like they’re willing to compromise or show a willingness toward bipartisanship. Anti-abortion initiatives are also one of the most popular ways for conservatives to establish their legitimacy with their base. This political dynamic does not bode well for the right to choose. I think you nail it when you equate the choice movement with the anti-gun movement.
God damned right. All who SUPPORT this bill OWN it, and all it’s parts. Make them own it. Always. Never forget who owns this pos.
But…but…it’ll be a victory for the people with a “D”. Don’t you want to give VICTORY to the people with a “D”?!? Because otherwise it will mean victory for the people with a “R” and the “D” people can’t have that. So where are your loyalties? With the “D”s or with the “R”s? Time’s up!
I just read over at TPM that Kucinich is whipping for it.
joking, right?
Yep and that other Reps are saying they’ve never seen him whip anything before. Stinks to high heaven.
No, it’s there. I read it too.
Threw down a few comments on the troll:)
From Holy See to Shining Holy See
Poor Bart Simpson Stupak …. the bishops told him to drive the Constitution off a cliff, and he enthusiastically complied. After Michigan’s primary, watch for the huddle with Joe Short Ride Lieberwhore followed by a Hail Mary independent run to keep his seat.
P.S. When you took your oath of office, Mr. Stupak, you placed your hand on the bible and swore to uphold the U.S. Constitution. You didn’t place your hand on the U.S. Constitution and swear an oath to uphold the bible.
h/t Jamie Raskin http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/raskin.asp
jeesusmary, anyone talk to his wife? Has she been missing lately?
His aid says it’s for history? The cynicism of that fucker is extraordinary.
It’s alarming how few reasons for being a Democrat remain. And after only one year.
The performance put on over this issue pisses me off more than anything else about how this bill went down. It’s like women’s lives and rights are tokens for making deals between sellout fucking scumbags in congress, none of whom has any principles or honor whatsoever. I’m so damn tired of the lack of respect for women, it seems to be endless.
These people are worthless.
Jane. May I call you Jane? I like your style and I am in awe of the volume and quality of your work. I only recently started hanging out here. Thanks for not kicking me out (yet). You make the best case against the Democrats that I have ever heard. Are you a Democrat Jane? If so, why?
P.S. How about a guest piece from Cindy Sheehan. Maybe she would tell us why she is not a democrat. Or Ralph Nader. That would be a hoot.
Thanx. I remain your white male southern workingclass knuckle dragging friend.
http://cindysheehanssoapbox.blogspot.com/
This is downright malicious.
I just discovered that pre-existing conditions rules will NOT come in for 3 or 4 years!!!
I might have heard wrong, but I swear Pelosi and others have been harping on no pre-existing conditions taking effect immediately!
This is the one big plus of the bill.
What??
Am I the only person who heard this wrong and didn’t understand it wouldn’t start for a few years??
Won’t do any good. Even the ones there now won’t stand together.
Really.
ARe you as shocked as I am over the way Democrats are supporting anything they do just like the ditto head Republicans??
Really, I STILL can’t believe it. I never thought it was that way on “this side”. Never.
And that Democrats would pass THIS??? The whole thing still seems surreal to me.
I should note that Gibbs confirmed this above at his news conference about an hour ago.
It’s sad that everyone has a price and can be bought off.
When do Republics go back to worrying about the unborn snowflake babies?
And how exactly – with nominal Democrats controlling the White House and both houses of Congress – were women given the “choice” between keeping the limited rights they have or giving up a chunk of them in order to “pay” for what Congress should do as of right – give 30 million more Americans some semblance of health insurance.
Even at that, the insurance is poor, with little indication of how much health care it would yield, and the price is a faulty bill with an egregious mandate that benefits health insurers, but not the insured.
I want to ad ‘class’ to ‘fuckno’, – I want to be fucknoclass, henceforth. How do I do that?
Cregan, I don’t know if there is anything in the bill that goes into effect before 2014. Tough, ain’t it?
Jane, thank you for highlighting Natasha’s work. She is right. I am thankful every day that I made it through my “reproductive years” without ever becoming pregnant.
Keep after it. You are appreciated.
Actually, there are plenty who are willing to go along.
No, serious.
Since there was no provision for enforcement, I didn’t really pay much attention to when those restrictions were supposed to kick in. They won’t be enforced anyway.
You can make changes like that on your Profile. See the Toolbox on the lower right hand side of the front page.
I think it goes into effect sooner for children only. (not sure of the age qualifiers)
BUT — and I have yet to hear this asked of our lawmakers by our media(I know….):
What about the giant loopholes in this pre-existing clause? Insurance companies make their huge profits by denying claims and they make up excuses as they go along. They make you jump trough hoops during the appeals process, in the hopes that you’ll just give up. Many DO just give up and drop their appeal or don’t take it to the next level.
Not to mention the added burden on someone who is ill and whose life may depend on the treatments in ‘dispute’. (Obama’s mother)
What, if anything, in this legislation will ‘ensure’ that necessary treatments and medications will be paid for?
Also, what, if anything, will prevent the insurance companies from charging exorbitant premiums, deductibles, and copays due to pre-existing conditions? After all, they have shareholders to answer to…
As I just wrote, nothing will. There’s no provision for enforcement. They leave that up to the states, and to the discretion of the President. Which is to say that it won’t happen, given current conditions.
I see my knuckledragging post is gone.
Just want to say my apologies. Didn’t mean to go over the line.
Sorry.
Thanks.
And yet, the IRS will be collection agency in chief for the insurance cartel, “compliments” of the low and middle income taxpayers.
THAT, I can almost guarantee, WILL be enforced.
thanks, I’m molting.
From the time you become pregnant until you give birth, the State owns you body.
Less freedom. More control.
Probably because what you write isn’t what you think you’re saying. And what you say is, to my mind, usually off in the field on the right side of the road.
Jane, do you have a link to this? If not, I’ll try to go search it down. Is this listed in the bill itself after Bernie got the money for the community health centers? It is all so disturbing to say the least, and one of the most disturbing things being the information that Planned Parenthood and Naral have not supplied.
I sense Lysistrata being internally rehearsed all over the country in many women’s brains, but this time it won’t be to protest a war, but merely so women of child-bearing age can preserve themselves and their bodies for themselves.
I am not a Democrat, i consider myself a libertarian socialist. If that’s right side of the road then you must be residing in GB, or one of it’s satrapies.
See my comment around #80.
I am sending in my Emilys list donation today. I used to be in NARAL but it seems to me they are less effective than Emilys List. I would also be happy to donate to any cause that will try and get the Hyde thing overturned, it seems to me that’s the first place to start at this point.
There! I fixed that sentence for you.
My mom had two abortions in the 1930′s, before I was conceived. She was proud of them. She spared two from birth into grinding poverty. Ask a female fetus in Congo if she wishes to be birthed into famine, raised in fear and hunger, gang raped at age nine, mutilated with machetes, and executed by having a rifle fired up her vagina.
Ask any thinking human if he’d live his life again… Today, I’ll rue, again, the day I was born, and wish mom had had another abortion, although I have been, for ALL my life, VERY lucky.
“The death of a child is never really to be regretted, considering how much he has escaped.” (Thomas Hardy)
No, you’re not… I kept reading, too, that the end of pre-existing conditions was supposed to start right away.
Guess that’s one more provision that was traded away for a better CBO score.
The events of yesterday and today have rendered me speechless and sick with depression and fearing what I’ll do when the rage hits.
That’s a great quote. We should have that prominently displayed at the Lake.
Oh, that is perfect!
This is sick, but you know what is also appalling? Where are Jane’s peers on this? Where are the other popular progressive bloggers, particularly the women?
I feel you. I haven’t gotten a lick of work done for these past two days. I’m very distracted and disturbed by this slow-motion trainwreck, even though we could see it coming a mile away.
Thanks. I think we’ll have to assume from here on out that almost any progressive position has an invisible qualifier in front of it.
NARAL doesn’t qualify, they don’t operate clinics.
The bill doesn’t name PP specifically, but the definition of “community health centers” is written to include them (among others). They are actively promoting the Sanders provisions in their efforts to point out the good parts of the bill, so it’s not a mystery.
Educating community activists is going to be key as to where we go from here after this bill is passed. Many are still going to go to PP for misleading info unless alternative sources are provided. Thanks for all the help with this.
I will never vote for any man or woman who is not pro choice.
Nov. will be seeing a LOT of dems. turned out of office.
I searched yesterday. There aren’t very many women who have been ardently pro-choice in the past speaking out on this, and I don’t quite know why.
I’m thinking some promises are being made to the PL Caucus for their votes so the Pregnant Women Support Act can get out of committee. It has already been referred to several with the first being Energy and Commerce (Stupak v Capps again). Or who knows, maybe the “pro-choice” women are being told they will be supported to stop H.R. 2035 and are stupid enough to buy it. Either way, NARAL, PC caucus, et al will be knocking on our door again. That bill is horrid.
“shouldn’t have to sell their reproductive rights off in exchange for health care.”
Especially this useless health care bill. Its not even a bill worth passing.
Again, I ask why hasn’t the supposed pro-choice block requested that vasectomy or Viagra coverage be prohibited in the exchanges? If you are going to sell out, at least provide this brief and gentle reminder that women are not responsible for getting pregnant alone.
Glad to see mention of the coercion abuse which I included in a comment on Tuesday. From the Family Violence Prevention Fund:
“A groundbreaking study released this week sheds light on a little-recognized form of abuse in which men use coercion and birth control sabotage to cause their partners to become pregnant against their wills. The study, published in the January issue of Contraception, finds this kind of reproductive control to be especially common in relationships in which women experience physical or sexual partner violence.”
I’ve known women who were beaten for getting an abortion and women who were beaten for NOT getting one, so our reproductive health IS intrinsically tied to our health care and I’m tired of hearing the false dichotomy argument that says these matters are separate.
Any one have the data as to what proportion of elective abortions have been paid for the last few years by insurance companies> The poorest of the poor have Medicaid, which won’t pay for abortions anyway.
FYI
