When the going gets tough, it appears Sen. Jay Rockefeller does a complete 180 flip-flop. The man who spent all year trying to depict himself as a strong advocate for the public option, is now trying to stop an attempt to revive the idea:
“I don’t think the timing of it is very good,” the West Virginia Democrat said on Monday. “I’m probably not going to vote for that, although I’m strongly for the public option, because I think it creates, at a time when we really need as much bipartisan[ship] … as possible. ”
Rockefeller added: “I don’t think you [pursue] something like the public option, which cannot pass, will not pass. And if we get the Senate bill–both through the medical loss ratio and the national plans, which have in that, every one of them has to have one not-for-profit plan, which is sort of like a public option.”
If you plan to vote against something, you are not allowed to call yourself a supporter. Worrying that the public option would make health care reform appear “partisan” is such a stupid excuse, it is comical. The Senate bill already passed on a pure partyline vote, with every Democrat voting “yes” and every Republican voting “no.” By definition, that is as partisan as anything can get. With the only path forward for the current Senate bill a purely partisan reconciliation measure, worries about looking bipartisan are just silly.
Finally, Rockefeller is saying currently existing not-for-profit insurance companies like some of the Blue Cross Blue Shield insurers are “sorta like a public option.” This is worse than nonsense, this is a bald face lie. They are sorta like a public option in the same way a fine pearl necklace is sorta like a loop of used dental floss if you wear around you neck.
Why would Rockefeller tell this lie? Maybe it is to justify breaking his word to vote against anything without something like a public plan:
SIEGEL: Can you imagine voting against a bill because it lacks a public option?
Sen. ROCKEFELLER: No. I will vote against a bill that doesn’t have something that is very similar to a public plan. Give it any name you want, but it’s got to have – it’s got to be no profit. It’s got to challenge the insurance companies. I mean, they’re in the business of making money.
Rockefeller went from promising to vote against any bill without some form of a public alternative to the current insurance companies, to promising to vote against any effort to create a public option. He now says the exact same insurance companies he railed against are “sorta like a public option.”
Right here is a perfect example of why Americans hate Washington. This kind of nonsense is why the Democratic base will have such low turnout in November.

About FDL Action
Would someone PLEASE remind Sen. R. that the Repubs passed the HCR THEY wanted just 4 years ago & how often the Democratic Party likes to remind us it’s “the party of the people”!
the Democrats loss a 32 political point lead over the Republicans. This just does not happen, you have to work at losing a 32 point lead.
Obama number one task was to demoralize the Dem Progressive Base.
It has already worked in Mass, 900,000 Dems stayed home.
Obama is not on our TEAM, he is playing for the other Team and he is helping them win.
Dems needs to wake up and understand, Obama is not on their Team.
He wants and works at making sure Progressive lose.
torture by BUSH o-kay
excise tax on union health care plans o-kay
public option for the american people not o-kay
more war and wars o-kay
don’t ask don’t tell o-kay
individual mandate o-kay
even a Blind man or woman can see Obama is playing for the Other Team
We’ll have to change his name from “Jello Jay” to “Flip-flopper Jay.”
Yes, he’s playing for the corporatist team. We need to take back the Democratic Party or build our own.
Who will get to play Iago on the next big issue?
I am so disappointed in this whole fiasco, I can hardly express it (without a lot of cursing).
Democratic senators and congressmen, you OWN this. I hope the stench of failure follows you for many years.
I dunno if losing elections and having them become lobbyists is going to teach them much.
Look at history. We’ve got a gigantic national debt to the point where it looks like bankruptcy, the debt continues to rise because of wars, cost of living is rising to the point where there’s a death toll (health care), the tax burden is becoming increasingly unfair (especially with health care mandates, which amount to a tithe to politically connected monopolies), the conspicuous consumption of our noble class continues to rise, unemployment is high, the resentment of the poor and middle class at the priviledged continues to rise, and there are no representatives of the people in our government (with no way of changing that).
The teabaggers are citing the wrong revolution. Those are not the conditions of the United States pre-1776.
damn right, Margot
If losing elections means I don’t have to pay the salary and the very very generous lifetime pension and health care of a fucking turncoat Democrat, then good. My last Republican congressman ended up in the slammer. The Democratic one is a GOPer in D clothing.
He failed us and we needed help badly. I will never forgive and never forget. If he comes in the nursing home when I’m a resident he had better watch out for flying …something. Canes, walkers, etc.
I’ve come to the conclusion that both the Dem’s and Rep’s are wolves in sheep’s clothing. You can’t trust any of them. Scrap the whole lot and Start Over!
Senator Rockefeller,
Please take your head out of your ass and support the creation of a public health insurance option now that it has a chance of passing.
I hope you guys really see what’s going on here. This about-face indicates that Obama is going to water down the climate bill even more to get coal state senators like Rockefeller to agree to it. Remember, a week ago Rockefeller was saying he didn’t trust the Obama White House. Now all of a sudden he’s falling into line? What this shows is that he’s already been promised a gutting of the bill in private and he’s now scratching Obama’s back in advance. Watch in the next few weeks for Obama to once again tell us how there are good things in that bill and that we shouldn’t (wait for it), “Let perfect be the enemy of the good.” I swear, the ORahma White House has to be the most amateurish and stupid operation I’ve ever seen. I’ll say it again…BAD IS ALWAYS THE ENEMY OF THE GOOD.
This is simple congressional betrayl in practice. While I know that I can rely on Leiberman and Nelson and Lincoln to kill the Public Option, I can be a champion of the cause. I can make heroic statements of drawing lines in the sand. Since I know that normally Reid does not have the stones to push this through reconcilliation, I can keep yelling ” Let me at em, i’ll muderize them”. Turns out Reid borrowed a pair and is talking about reconcilliation. The progressive groups have started a campaign to add in the PO since were going reconcilliation anyway. Now Rockefellar is scared that he may have to put up. His owners would be upset. It is always more embarassing to betray your cause after you have made such a show of being the populist hero. This also means we don’t know how many of the current signatures are solid or people jumping on the progressive bandwagon knowing that people like Jay or going to kill it.
OK, is Jay Rockefeller on crystal meth or does he just savor the feeling of doublecrossing his allies?
Not only did Rockefeller publicly endorse the public option concept last summer, he went further and sponsored a public option bill that required Medicare providers to accept beneficiaries at standard Medicare rates (that is, no +5% bump) for at least the first two years.

Honestly, I have more respect for right wing senators who say what they mean and mean what they say (even if its something batshit crazy) than for “progressive” senators like Rockefeller who say all the right things but can’t be relied on for anything.
With you. Rockefeller’s flip flop is terribly disappointing. Could never figure out why absolutely nothing came out of Phase I and the finally finished Phase II of the SSCI into false pre war intelligence.
No one held accountable for those Niger Documents. Rockefeller was second in command of that investigation.
Wondering since the war profiteering Diane Feinstein is now the chair of the intelligence committee that nothing will ever come out of that investigation. How is it that someone who had very serious conflicts of interest with the Iraq war is now the chair of the intelligence committee…this seems highly inappropriate. Diane should be investigated not the chair of intelligence investigations. Twisted indeed
