Back in November, Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, ripped the US Chamber of Commerce for shopping around for an economist critical of health care reform. The Chamber was offering $50,000 for the services of a “respected economist.”
“Now I know the price for a tenured economist,” Rahm Emanuel chuckled. “I’ve come to the conclusion that they’re firm in their opinions. It’s their principles that are flexible.”
One day later the White House released a letter in support of health care reform.
A day after White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel took a shot at the Chamber of Commerce for shopping around for an economist that would be critical of health reform, the White House released a letter of more than 20 health economists supportive of Democratic reforms.
One of the biggest economists to sign the letter was Jonathan Gruber, an economist very supportive of reform. The Obama Administration hired Gruber to do consulting on the “President’s health reform proposal,” and paid him roughly $400,000. The administration has been very aggressively promoting Gruber’s research all year. Oh, the rich irony.
It makes you wonder, was Rahm upset at the Chamber Of Commerce for trying to oppose health care reform, or because they might have gotten a much better deal on their economist?

Well, to be fair, Gruber also did modeling.
And as Tyra Banks, hostess of America’s Next Top Model can tell you, modeling don’t come cheap.
Rahm finally appears to be correct on something.Courtesy commenter MadDog who found this in Politico comments:
Gruber Once Argued Against Higher Health Care Cost Sharing
Rahm Emanuel talking about someone else’s “flexible principles” is pretty hilarious. Rahm knows about as much about principles as Bush does about tribal sovereignty.
See, by following the money one can find out all sorts of information that the villagers would much rather that the sheeple-and those few of us who do some digging-not know. Of course it is all because the big brother is always “lookin out for the folks” and is just keeping information from us so that we do not get bogged down in trivial subjects, like following the money.
Then of course we no longer actually run the country anymore. Over the last say 40 or so years a relatively small group of mega rich people and corporations-the New American Century which as of last year encompassed Big Energy, Big Arms, Big Media and Big Jesus-have become the oligarchs of the US. They have worked very hard to ensure that laws that have constricted their behavior and their ability to take money from the Treasury were repealed. They succeeded. One such was the repeal of Glass-Segal by Clinton pushed very hard by sen Phil Gramm(rTx) who got his reward from UBS.
So what now? They pretty much own congress, the MSM is now just propaganda for the oligarchs. Try watching the news from a country other than ours. BBC, CBC, the Korean channel KBS, Japanese TV, even news from China will have much better information than what we get to see on ABC,CBS,NBC and the 24/7 cable news channels. The truth is out there, its just hard to find.
What can we do to take back our govt? Damn good question, no? I have no idea. It was the apathy of all of us that got us where we are now. It was the powerful ignoring the laws that protected those of us who used to be “middle class” in favor of those same rich people. It took many years and a country whose polity became not only apathic but also ignorant of all levels of govt. It took the schools which stopped teaching civics and govt and each persons responsibility in voting. It took the sheeple whom the oligarchs learned to exploit by ensuring that the information they got was “spun” in the direction that was desired. and it took us, all of us, saying that govt had no meaning, that nothing govt did affected us. It took millions of people with their heads buried firmly up their asses to get us where we are now. How many of us did not bother to vote in 2000? How many ignore the primaries? Do we really get the best person as president? We didn’t in 2000. The dems put up a very poor candidate in 2004. The rethugs did the same in 2008. But congress has been bought. Their votes are owned by those who pay them. We the people can not even get to see our represenatives, only the rich can do that.
Our republic is becoming a hollow shell. How can you get out the truth when the MSM will not print it? How can a massive story like the Downing St memo just..go away? Yet that same MSM will say and do anything to portray Obama as a no nothing chump.
So what are you all going to do? I have been reading lots of comments on lots of boards that say, I am going to punish the dems by not voting in 2010. Smart that. Boy that will work out great, just like it did when w won. The MSM did a lot to help out bush and to portry Gore as a slimy pol who always lied and never met a fact he wouldn’t change. Looks like the MSM is trying out that same tactic on Obama.
What would happen if the american voter-da sheeple-whose memory seems to last about 5 min, voted the rethugs back into power in 2010? How about if those same rethugs nominated Palin? The rethugs believe that lots of dems will sit out 2010 and will be just as apathetic in 2012, giving them their chance to take over again.
Myself, I am damn glad that I am an old man right now. I do not think that my kids will have as good a life as I have had, I do not think that my grandkids will have 1/2 as good a life. I would truely hate to be 18 this year. I remember when I was 18 and in a war. Then Vietnam, now Iraq or Afghanistan. BTW, when I was in Vietnam the vast majority of deaths came from..but I am sure you guessed it… IEDS. Only we called them booby traps back then. 40 damn years and no change except that the middle class is losing more people all the time. The richest 1% get richer, the rest of us, just get screwed.
Not to mention, working for the President is higher in the “corporate” ladder, so it is understandable that the pay is a lot higher…
Rahm Emanuel is billed at Savannah Guthrie and Chuck Todd’ s ‘big get’ guest for the debut of their wee programme on MSNBC Monday at 9am. I wonder how hardhitting their questions will be about Gruber’s purchased analysis?
Not being a fan of the Chamber of Commerce, it’s still kind of sad that they don’t have the ability to use the deep pockets of the Federal government this one time. Heck Rahm can keep hiring $400 thousand dollar consultants ’till the cows come home. After all it surely isn’t coming out of his pocket.
OT but for anyone that wants to put American workers back to work here is a web site that has clothing made in the USA. Jeans, polo shirts, sweatshirts for both men and women. Put American back to work. Buy American. http://www.allamericanclothing.com/SFNT.html
Silly, Teddy ! You know Chuck Todd can’t pronounce ” purchased analysis”. His mouth may be willin’ but his brain can’t go there. *g*
Jeez, I never heard of Jonathan Gruber before today, and suddenly he’s everywhere, not just here and EW this a.m., but here, “Is the Recession Good for your Health?” Timothy Noah consults Gruber, but seems not to take his word as gospel.
WoW, $400,000 of tax dollars for what? To tell us that our health care system is broken. Good thing his first name is not money.
