We continue to get great reports from FDL activists manning the phones over at the War Room.  Today we have two confirmed votes; while the votes aren’t surprising on their own, the feedback from the callers is very helpful.

An activist named Walker called the office of Rep. John Lewis (GA-5) and was told that even though Rep. Lewis supports the public option, he will “100%” vote for a bill without a public option.  Walker reports:

Staffer said he’s “100% sure” the congressman would vote for a bill without a public option. However he still supports a strong public option.

Supporting a “strong public option” doesn’t mean much when you’re 100% likely to vote for a bill without one.  This kind of public option lip service does no good when you’re so willing to abandon it.

James, another FDL activist, called Rep. Charlie Melancon (LA-3), who is the DSCC’s main man to run in LA-Sen against David Vitter in 2010.   Melancon voted against the original House health care bill, and his office promises James that he’ll vote against the final bill, because of “cost.”  Whatever that means.  James’ report:

I called Rep. Melancon’s office already aware that this “Blue Dog” has opposed health care reform from the get-go, with or without the Public Option. His staffer confirmed that position. I told him I was a strong proponent of the public option and asked what was Mr. Melancon’s plan for getting thousands of uninsured Louisiana residents access to affordable care. He could not comment on that but explained that “cost” was his reason for voting “no”. After exposing the hypocritical nature of this argument favored by these dogs and noting that the Congressman has accepted tens of thousands of dollars from the health care sector, I asked for some clarification. The staffer would then only take my name and phone number with a promise to get back to me. I told him I would not hold my breath.

I’m sure Mary Landrieu is peeved that Melancon gets away with voting against the bill, while she’s going to have to stomach a vote for it.
