After Dorgan announced his retirement, MSNBC and radio host Ed Schultz — until recently a longtime North Dakota resident — reported that he was approached by North Dakota Democratic leaders about running for Senator Dorgan’s seat in 2010.
So here’s a question for Firedoglake’s North Dakota activists about this Senate race.
Your feedback will help us gauge public opinion about Schultz’s potential candidacy and what local Firedoglake activists think about this race. And if you have other ideas about this race, feel free to let us know in the survey. (North Dakotans only, please.)

About FDL Action
Tell Ed Schultz I said he must run. We need strong single payer or pro strong public option choice candidates to challenge every member of congress up for election this year that does/did not aggressively support a strong medicare like public option CHOICE for everyone on day one. Medicare expansion, and no new taxes of workers healthcare benefits or plans. No mandates without a strong public option choice.
All of you that can do this MUST! run and takeout the obstructionist and sellouts. And the un-democratic filibuster must GO! YOU CAN DO THIS. YOU MUST! DO THIS.

I can’t wait to hear what North Dakota FDLers think about this idea.
Byron Dorgan is a populist and a patriot. He’s also a very self-effacing man, not taken with his own celebrity or status. He wheels his own suitcase, and he flies in coach. He had an opportunity to fill Teddy Kennedy’s shoes, but the Obama team shot down his prized initiative, drug reimportation, in a craven deal with Big PhRHMa.
Would Ed Schultz be a suitable Senator? Or would the Obama team benefit from getting a progressive critic off MSNBC for the duration of the campaign?
Personally, I’m not a big Schultz fan, but if North Dakota Democrats want him to be their nominee, I am all for it. It should be a local, state-based decision, though. I will, however, very much enjoy the look on Chris Matthews’ silly puss should this come to pass. Tweety passed on running for Spectre’s Senate seat, likely when because he couldn’t answer a friend’s question, “But Chris, what would you want to do when you got to the Senate?”
I think Ed probably knows some answers to that question.
Bring on Big Eddie, Obama needs some criticism, he seems to be taking us for a ride anyway.
While Ed is possible he not interested, but we should look for other progressive candidates and not willing to concede to a REP. I hope you do more surveys of this type. I also hope those on this blog and other liberal/progressive blogs start to formulate plans to make sure we are ready and prepared for the midterm election.
I don’t think he said he was not interested, I heard Ed say he was not considering it and that it was premature to talk about it. How that’s true, I’m not sure, maybe North Dakota politics moves slower — I mean, Blumenthal announced for the Democratic nomination for the Senate before Chris Dodd even had his actual press conference.
I think Ed wants to hear what people think, and the survey that went out to North Dakota FDL team members will help the site tell him what to do.
I think it nice to take a survey of how people feel about Shultz, but more importantly we should be looking for a candidate in the Dorgan vane and give our support for that person whom ever it is However,I like Shultz doing what he is doing and hope he conntinues to do it even better. As a practical matter I wonder if Shultz is willing to give up his economic position to be a senator.
Shultz as a long term progressive political radio host in ND has been friends with Dorgan and agrees with him very strongly.
Poor Keith. First upstaged by Rachel and now by Schultz.
Maybe now he’ll start reporting stuff and digging into things instead of the useless competition with FOX and the mindless repetition of Democratic party talking points.
I like Ed, but he is a war monger. A few weeks he was struggling with making a decision if he would support the Pres. with the escalation of troops to Afghanistan and he did. Come on folks, he works for GE – Military jet engines, cancer causing body scanners now at airports. Ed is smart enough to know where his bread is buttered.
