You talk to every health care economist out there, they will tell you that what ever ideas exist in terms of bending the cost curve and starting to reduce cost for families, businesses, and government, those elements are in this bill.
This statement is 100% false–and Obama knows that. This bill does not contain anywhere near most ideas for controlling health care costs. This bill does not even contain most of the cost-reducing ideas that were part of Obama’s health care plan during last year’s presidential campaign.
What makes his lie so unbelievable is that Obama’s administration is right now fighting against one of the biggest cost control ideas that the president previously claimed to support. His administration is working to kill Dorgan’s drug re-importation amendment.
Dorgan’s drug re-importation amendment, which was previously co-sponsored by Obama, would allow Americans to buy cheaper drugs from Canada or Europe. The CBO projects that it would save Americans roughly $100 billion dollars on their health care costs over the next decade. It is a very popular, bipartisan, and a common-sense solution to bring down health care costs in this country. It is not in the bill because Obama promised the drug industry he would work to keep drug reimportation out of the bill as part of their secret deal.
Mr. President, If you are going to cut secret deals that will force Americans to spend billions more on their prescription drugs, at least have the decency to not publicly lie about how your “health care reform” bill will do everything it can to reduce costs for American families. You know it is a lie, the PhRMA lobbyists you cut the secret deal with know it is a lie, health care reform experts knows it is a lie, and the American people should know it is a lie.

About FDL Action
The President of the US lied today on national TV.
In other news, the sky was blue today.
Not much I can do about the sky, but I, for one, am damned tired of this President, the last President, any President lying.
And you’re right Jon. It’s a BALD FACED LIE. AND HE KNOWS IT. Put those together, and that tells you all you need to know about BHO, the man.
Lies and the lying liars that tell them.
Damn near ruined my TV.
Jon, we know though why it is bipartisan though.
Republicans support it because they believe it will kind the whole bill, not because they are acting in good faith for the American people.
It is clearly the right amendment to do……..the right thing to do. Especially with how shoddy the bill is now, or whatever version the Senate is coming out with.
Ruined several of mine. Nearly caused me to run out of bricks, too.
Thanks Jon; now if only the CMM would point out his lies.
Holy crap! I actually agree with you guys on this one. I never thought the day would come…
Oh yeah, this is the guy who’s gonna save the day in conference.
Right, and I’ve got a lovely bridge to sell you, too…
This whole thing makes me want to hurl.
As Jane has pointed out, if I wanted LIEberscuzz to write the health care bill I would’ve voted for McCranky.
I’ve been a staunch supporter of Obama from day one, but if this plays out as it looks like (fat wet kiss to pharma & ins. co’s) I’m done with him.
And, fyi, I’m black.
At what point will Democrats admit to themselves that they’ve been pwned by a Cortporatist, Free Market zealot?
We need people in the streets Now; everything public is henceforth for sale.
Bush Presidency was revolutionary (birth of private military on a huge scale, civil liberties eviscerated, etc.) Obama is V.2.0 of that same revolutionary tendency, and far worse because they(Corporatists) are counting on Dems. not to resist their own.
sorta related, and it was your question.
Seema Obama is yet another corporate tool. How devestating. We are lost.
So on Sunday Morning Teevee, Summers referred us to anonymous “professional forecasters,” with whom he agrees that the economy will pick up in 2010.
And now, Barry refers us to anonymous “health care economists,” whom, he claims, all agree that whatever ideas exist for cost control, “those elements are all in this Bill.”
Apparently, neither Summers nor Obama will tell you what actual GOVERNMENT STUDIES tell them, much less COMMON SENSE! Because I’m pretty sure those wouldn’t jibe with the Hope and Change BULLSHIT they are selling!
Mr President:
YOU LIE!
Wow. Just. Wow.
FunnyWheelieDiva
http://firedoglake.com/2008/01/28/barack-obama-statement-on-fisa/
This has been another… GREAT MOMENT… in Obama Lying.
How do you know when Obama is lying? When his lips are moving. The man lies about everything.
Summers used to rely on “professional forecasters” to support his support of Gramm-Leech-Blaily. He’s wholy discredited, ought to be holding court at the Heritage or Patterson Foundation along with Obama, Geithner, Orszag and the rest of the thieving thieves: Fuck’em all!
WE ain’t shit, if you depend on all this bullshit you deserve to be lost.
Love it!
Suport Wilson for telling the truth! We need truth wherever we can find it!!!
We need to kill this bill if we can’t do that lets delay it and expose it as much as we can.
Infuriating!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH…
sorry for laughing, but my sides hurt.
ya see, we had “people in the streets” a few years ago, protesting Iraq. didn’t do squat. The NYTimes didn’t even cover it until 2 0r 3 days after the fact.
we had a huge march for women’s rights, and got alito and roberts, with scant media coverage.
last week, there were protests outside the residence of the chancellor of UCal Berkeley. A protestor (perhaps a Lucy Parsons fan as well) threw “an incendiary device”. You’d figure that kind of violence would get a lot of coverage. I heard one sentence on NPR. A sentence.
so yeah, people in the streets. right.
Saw it Selise; what I’m looking for is someone like Maddow or Olbermann(though I never watch them) to come out and say bluntly, Mr. President, you have lied to the American people when you said “You talk to every health care economist out there, they will tell you that what ever ideas exist in terms of bending the cost curve and starting to reduce cost for families, businesses, and government, those elements are in this bill.”
Bernie Sanders, and Sherrod Brown, need to be guaranteed our financial support in exchange for the death knell here and now, more than us coming up with $120,000 to run some ad against Harry!
Hey, right-wingers? Where are you to tell us what bootlicking Obama-ites we are? Where are your accusations of drinking the Kool-Aid? Where are your mocking attacks of “The One” and “Teleprompter-in-Chief”?
Gee, that’s funny. They’re so quick to accuse us of being “in the tank” for Obama, you’d think they’d be in here doing that. Weird, huh?
You right-wingers are shameless suck-ups to your own Great Leaders, and you know it. As much as you try to peg us as being just like you, threads like this prove that isn’t true, and it must steam you guys something awful.
The only silver lining about crap like this is that it shows one of the key differences between the principled progressive and the tribalist, cultish right-winger, to whom loyalty and fealty to one’s “betters” trumps any ethic.
Maybe Reverend Wright was more right …than wrong, after all.
Remember when he said,
“After all,Obama’s a politician. He’ll say what he needs to..”?
It just gets worse and worse……..
Good point. Marches used to get covered because there was actual journalism and local coverage, and they were discussed because there were actual News departments that were decoupled from “if it bleeds, it leads” sales minds. No longer.
As Jon Stewart pointed out, the Teabaggers got wall-to-wall summer coverage and the gay rights march on DC a few months later got diddlysquat. The media’s job today is to promote the status quo, not challenge it.
Particularly when they pick and choose comments here at fdl…
To Obama, Reid and all the rest of the Senate Democrats:
A simple truth – If you reward bad behavior (Lieberman), you will always continue to get bad behavior (Lieberman)!
No public option? Then no fookin’ deal!
ah, sorry. i was just referring to another lie, a little closer to home.
My apologies to Joe Wilson. He was the first in Congress to have the guts to say it to Obama’s face.
And those same right wing idiots are ignorant lackeys of Wall Street and the insurance industry thieves as well. More on Obama’s side than we are, at this point. Though they’re too stupid to know.
Howard Dean. Obama’s no different on this than Bush, McCain, Palin.
well, I’m sure you can spill just as much ink supporting the case for sitting on your ass and doing aggressively nothing.
But, you seem to be quite willing in ignoring the T-baggers in your little fit of mirth.
Get yourself some Frederic Douglass, might help.
I’m hurling right along with you and echo your thoughts.
The teabaggers never had a chance of changing my mind about dems. The dems are doing it all by themselves.
Mr. President, you have the right to remain silent, exactly the way you remained silent – rather than fight for a public option – while real health care reform was thrown out with the trash.
Mr. President, anything you say or do to sell this piece of shit can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion.
Leader Reid, you’re also being read your rights. Try to sell this piece of shit as if it were gold, and you’re done.
Was there ever a one term President that lost the election 37 months ahead of time before now? just asking.
A nation of MSM mushrooms-kept in the dark and fed a lot of s–t.
Wonder what he would have said if Ted Kennedy was still around. It’s unbelievable what a scuz BHO is turning out to be.
I predict an uptick on Wall Street in turd polish.
Two paragraphs, one contradiction, – hokey.
On second thought, Reid. You’re just done. Doesn’t matter what you do at this point.
Your defeat next year will be both humiliating for you and entirely necessary for the Progressive base of the Democratic Party, who must clean house so Americans can get the change we voted for last year.
don’t you mean at least have the decency to lie with more suaveness, skill, and deniability so we ‘progressives’ can remain in our cocoon of willful self-deception about the Democrats, for a little bit longer?
Its not like this disconnect between rhetoric and deeds should surprise anyone born before the year 2000, as OFG points out in the very first comment.
Hmmm. Didn’t expect this much depravity. Guess I’m not terribly surprised.
There were a few of us here that said so at the time. A few of us.
Think This Is Bad? Just Wait…
What happens next: Obama and Senate Dems claim victory. Brace yourself to hear, again and again, the following boat load of bullshit: “This bill offers comprehensive reform, but is just the first step in incremental change.”
What they mean: “We’re totally in bed with Big Insurance, Big Pharma, Big Hospitals, and anything else – as long as it’s BIG. Incremental change? We’re sorry, little guy, working gal. We actually meant EXCREMENTAL change.”
We’ve crossed the point of no return. We must immediately begin working against every Democrat who played any part in this mess, and on their home turf – right now, today. And of course against Joe Lieberman, I-Conn (the “I” stands for “Insurance”).
crossposted at themalcontent.com
I’m sorry, but you are wrong and what he said is not a lie.
There are many items in the bill that will lead to cost controls over the long haul
I’m on my way out thedoor, but read GAWANDE’s LATEST new Yorker article and his older one about mcAllen Tx and read the NY Times magazine piece about Bent james, go listen to the This American life epsisodes about this, and go look at some Ezra klein columns and so on. Google Uwe Reinhardt or Dartmouth Atlas and reform. There’s lots out there.
There are plenty of things in there, though admittedly many are pilot projects and seeds, but they are there.
Enough crap to assuage your conscience, – guess, you’re lucky that way.
And, do let the door hit you on your way out!
If you didn’t know obama was a liar you had your ears surgically sewn shut during his campaign when he lied about opposing retro immunity for telecoms and voted yes.
And yes, a lot of people owe joe wilson an apology because he did speak the truth.
It got coverage in the LA Times. At least one front-page story.
It was also a stupid thing to do.
yeah, right.
There were controls, before unHoly Joe and his DINO friends got hold of it. Now, all we get is the bad parts: mandates and higher rates.
Daschle and healthcare industry really pushing digital records so that they can deny more claims. It would make denying claims so quick and easy as they would have everything every little bit available on you from all sources at the touch of a finger.
I think digital records is a terrible idea. in hi tech with bio background, so suspect this is the reason. Off course insurance companies will have full access to all you records and you will have to pay to see them.
Ever been thru someone filing claims under your social security number and even after years still can’t do it.
Everyone’s life will be so miserable.
Also, tampering with records will be a cinch. Heck just look at all the id thefts even from hi tech companies.
Well, let the Fuckery Begin.
Seems to me The Fuckery started long ago and continues to run Unabated.
Le Sigh.
It’s been a real pleasure to read the comments on here the last couple of days. It’s given me….. hope? Too strong a word. Hope for hope?
My problem is, the progressives that post here are just like the progressives that we’re ridiculing in Washington DC.
You know, about caving??? Always taking the tiniest little crumb because that’s the best we can do? You know, like that.
And I don’t know if anyone’s contempt for the right wing, the Republican Party, conservatives, corpatrist, or whatever other word you can think of runs any higher than mine, because mine borders on outright hate. I’m not exaggerating. But one thing I’ve always given the right. Always. They have a spine. They will fight, fight, and fight some more for what they are after. They will say it, they will hold the country hostage, our own allies hostage, they will DO WHATEVER. Correct???
OK. Here’s where the rubber meets the road. Today (2009) it’s easy to say we’re not gonna support Obama and the Dems, waaa waaa waaa.
Yeah. I’ll hold my breath on that along with holding it on getting real healthcare.
Well folks, I’m here to tell you. If you ever want the Democratic Party to change, we’ve got to send it a message. A REAL ONE. Not an emailed one. Not a bunch of phone calls. No. A real one. THAT MEANS WE REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY DO NOT VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS THAT ARE NOT FOR REAL PROGRESSIVES. PERIOD.
It’s not a game. If everyone here is gonna cave come 2010 or 2012 at the all the calls of “WAIT!!! Do you want the REPUBLICANS to win!!!!!????”. And then go in the booth, and give the Dems your vote.
Not gonna work. The Dems know this already. No. We have to send a message, EVEN IF THAT MESSAGE MEANS REPUBLICANS, or CORPORTISTS, or WHOEVER wins. We will not give our votes to Dems unless they are real progressives.
If you do that, along with working at the local level in trying to take back the D party, it can be done. It probably can be done by just starting at the local level. But imagine how much easier it would be if the national party really got the message and changed too, and made the transition from our gains locally to nationally easier.
It’s not easy. It’s not even very welcome. But it needs to be done. And I, from this day forward, am doing it.
And, unless I’m mistaken, this is also where I’ll lose 75% of you here. Because it’s easy to SAY we’re not gonna support ‘em. But it ain’t easy to walk in that booth in 2012 and see DICK CHENEY (R), BARACK OBAMA (D), and NOT fill in the oval or pull the level for the second one. If we do, 10 years from now, this site will be full of all sorts of different screen names bithcing and complaining about all the same old shit.
If we do really, really, mean it, and start to send the message to the D party to change or go on without us……………. who knows?
MUCH TOO LONG AGAIN.
DAMMIT. SORRY ALL.
President Obama’s short speech after meeting with the Dems shocked me. It was very threatening, threatening Americans that their premiums would skyrocket if Congress didn’t pass his bill; that Medicare and Medicaid would go broke! if Congress didn’t pass his bill; and I missed the third threat, but he said that these threats would come true, “Guaranteed!”
Reminded me of another President who used threats to put lousy laws in place, and I am not one to compare Obama to Bush, normally. But that one just jumped right out at me. And now, we find out he also lied? Man. So very, very sad for us.
Kill the bill.
Obama is nothing more than a lying self-serving politician. After Republicans regain control of Congress in 2010 we can hope the Republicans will impeach this phony. I’m sure they can find something to bring him down.
The moment Daschle was offered up for Health and Human Services, the con was on.
s’okay, ofg. rough day, for some of us. no worries.
“Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have the exact measure of the injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them.”
So, let’s stop quietly submitting !
Now do you see why I say, the power of myth is powering weapons-grade propaganda? If you don’t, take another look at Joe “How Can I Myth-Jack the Public Today?” Lieberman.
Speaking of out-and-out lies that are themselves political acts, how many remember the Silberman opinion? It rested on “a judicial act of lawlessness,” according to Scott Horton (10-page PDF).
That’s myth-making in the act. That’s the creation of the Dark Side right before our eyes.
Did he do it with facts, or a carefully crafted myth? Myths are the perfect weapons with which to jack people of their rights.
Believe it or not, there’s a lesson from comparative mythology that I believe is informing the method in their madness.
It’s called, The Secret of the Two Partners. It’s an ancient Egyptian principle of pharaonic rule. And it goes like this (cue the fade out to the sands of Abydos, c. 2,800 BC…)
In what I’m about to present, ask yourself: where have I seen this MO before?
Now who doesn’t see Karl Rove’s MO in that? That’s exactly the pattern of the stolen presidential elections, right down to Kenneth Blackwell and Katherine Harris providing “magical aid.” I’m not suggesting this is a playbook, but I am suggesting that the decades of Joseph Campbell’s lectures for the State Department didn’t go unnoticed.
So who’s doing this for Obama?
Prof. Horton informs us that Karl Rove calls himself by the name of not one or even two, but three different mythical monsters:
Pretty creepy of the ol’ Turd Blossom, eh? So who is Obama’s myth-maker in chief, Rahm? Or is our poet-president clever enough to myth-jack public opinion on his own, as he seems to be doing in the quote you so rightly denounce?
Yeah, I know, it’s a lot to wrap your head around. But just look at recent events. Has the health care reform debate been jacked by well-reasoned arguments grounded in facts? Obviously not!
The secret “Danish text” was an attempt to jack “Hopenhagen” with a “secret of the rich partners” deal.
How ’bout those mythical Iraqi WMDs? And those nonexistent Israeli bombs that number in the hundreds?
And of course, there’s Joe, who refuses to be bound by such trivial facts as his previous statements.
And the steady stream of myths issuing from DoJ, covering the tracks of war crimes and sundry other crimes against humanity and the republic?
Now, this is a big idea, so please bear with me. Think of the C Street cult, think of the many examples of being deceived by Obama’s otherwise inexplicable backroom deals.
(BTW, as a Joseph Campbell Foundation Associate, I’m taking the liberty to quote at length. Also, I’ve obtained written permission from Harper’s, too.)
See? Implacable enemies who are one behind the scenes! Sound familiar? As it turns out, the ol’ “good cop / bad cop” routine is one of the oldest tricks in the world, it’s older even than books.
Now, as a Zen Buddhist, I appreciate the whole transcending dualities thing, but the shape of the suffering of the world is still up to us. We can smash heads, or heal wounds. We don’t have to accept the myth with which we keep getting jacked: that a bogus eternal holy war is the only possible way of being in the world.
The Narmer Palette, Obverse
The Narmer Palette, Reverse
What I say to President Obama,
You can count on me to vote against you if you don’t push against Harry Reid, Max Baucus, Joe Lieberman, and the other DINO’s much, much harder out of the way. If you can’t support the majority of Americans and expose the injustice brought on the Democratic Party you can count on me to vote against you. If you don’t expose Baucus as a tool of the insurance industry, to the tune of $3.5 million, you can count on me (any everyone I know) to work to throw you out of office. The same can be said for Blanch Lincoln @ $2.2 million and Kent Conrad @ $1.4 million. Any money I have to spare for the Progressive cause goes to Move-On.ORG – and here is why.
I am a member of the Middle-Class, Carpenters Union Local 1797, and I’m a USMC veteran so I have almost as much reason to hate Republicans as almost anyone. And I do hate Republicans!
However, I also hate the way elected Democrats, including you, are rolling over for the SOBs on the Right. I also hate how elected Democrats play so damn nice and unwilling to fight fire with fire.
You and Harry Reed are blowing it. You are not taking the fight to the Right and not fighting with all the power your position can wield. Harry Reid should be voted out ASAP and if I was living in Nevada I would do all I could to help replace him with a real progressive Democrat.
The Republican base is small but energized because you and most of the Congress have let them get away with their BS. I feel my vote for you was a waste – maybe it should have gone for Hillary?
You are blowing it by letting the Right stop “Government Health Insurance” reform. What makes us mad is that no one is talking about Government Healthcare Reform – we are talking about Government Health INSURANCE reform!!!. However, these two issues are constantly interchanged by the Right. The people think the government wants to take over healthcare and you fail to correctly set the issue straight. If you would demand the that issue we want to vote on is health insurance reform and not healthcare reform you could then get into the details easily why this is an overwhelmingly good thing. The prevailing result has been wide spread confusion. Sure the Rightwing has created most of the confusion but no one is correcting the situation.
First of all you must demand people understand Government Health Insurance reform, while a part of the healthcare IS NOT the same thing. But most important it is an OPTION. This means if people want to keep private insurance then that is obviously option! They have the OPTION as in what part of “option” don’t you understand?
Second, you could easily explain how much people pay for the private insurance option as compared to a better public plan offered by the government. I would guess that the cost for a public option (i.e. no profit, no high salaries, less waste, etc.) could be 30% cheaper than private. Those opposed to it should be ridiculed much more aggressively for what they are – paid to oppose or just plain stupid. You need to tell the public loud and repeatedly – if they want to pay for higher cost private options (that may deny coverage when they need it) over the public option then BUY IT. As for the cost of the public option it should be noted that, like the US Postal Service, it can basically pay for itself.
Third, you need to call Max Baucus and Lieberman and tell them to get out of the Democratic Party! Seriously, you and Howard Dean need to publicly disgrace these so-called Senate Democrats voting for their own pocket book and strong arm them into towing the line and voting for a strong Public Option or face complete support of whoever runs against them in their next election. We will still have 51 votes and, when push comes to shove, like the Republicans, that is all we need.
These things I simply phrase are what I know can get a strong public option for health insurance passed in Congress. EXPOSE THE SENATORS THAT ARE BOUGHT AND PAID FOR BY THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY. The hell with what liars like Limbaugh or Beck spew out. They are the “National Inquirer” of cable TV and their worst enemy if you and Democrats with integrity use their BS against them.
Sincerely,
David Morse

His West Point speech also had a lot of threats at the end.
He’s starting to loose his cool.
Tick . . . Tick . . . Tock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obama, please do us a favor and resign,
N O W !
HA! That ain’t long, OFG! If they wanted HuffPo-style crap, they’d put a character limit on us. I, for one, am profoundly grateful for being able to allow to unfold, to their fullest potential, the ideas I’ve had cramped up in my head for years now.
FDL, I bow in your virtual direction. And you, o reader, my beleaguered moderating Reader, I bow to you, too. (Coriolis correction requested beyond North America. Not responsible for lost or stolen salutations.)
Digital records= hoovered digital records.
You’re fine, just fine. Give yourself a break. You deserve it.
Thank you for pointing out the lies Obama is telling. I am so sick and tired of people blaming Lieberman, the other conservative dems, or the republicans. I voted for Obama to lead the way to change. If the president would’ve taken a public stance and fought for that policy and lost to what we know is a bought and sold Senate, then he would still have my support. But this man never once laid down a marker to defend, and let the other side control this debate from start to finish. He is a failed leader as far as I am concerned. For those Obama supporters still drinking the kool-aid, wake the hell up. Your faith in this man is not deserved, and the sooner you get it and beging to take on the man you voted for, instead of letting him treat us like red-headed stepchildren, then you deserve whatever future bad policies he foists upon us.
So now Obama, the multi-dimensional chess master, is reduced to emulating Jerry Lundegaard forcing rust protection on unwilling car buyers who know better? I’d love to hear the Obama-bot explanation for this (I’m sure there is one).
I am not saying I agree, but bringing the Fargo Ref – beauty.
Obama is getting as good as Karl Rove at lying.
This is unfortunately something I suspected in the campaign- I heard him say beautiful things, but I was perpetually wondering if he really believed them. The Afghanistan speech was utterly baffling- I don’t think he believed a single thing he said. It is almost as if he wants to be vague and “nice” sounding enough so that everyone can project their best hopes onto his message. That only works in a campaign- sooner or later you have to start governing, and then what you really believe comes out.
I really hope the Dems get stomped in 2010. It’s pretty much the only way to make him give up this game.
great comment, I agree. but here is an easy test for the depth of ‘progressive’ outrage – look at your calendar and divide the year by 2. if it will not divide evenly by 2, you can have vast outpourings of cathartic outrage against the ‘spineless’ Democrats, and bold ones will step forward and even say, “never again!”
but, if you can divide the year evenly by 2, then it is get out the vote time, and turnout suppressing discouragement is treated rather differently.
despite this predictable oscillation, more and more folks are profoundly dissatisfied with voting against their own interests for the least worst all the time, and cannot be guilt tripped back, and contrarians are gifted with mountains of evidence daily that (D) governance differs very little from (R) governance, except maybe stylistically.
so thats encouraging.
have to admit to enjoying a little schadenfreude reading these comments.
anyone remember.. WAY back like last year.. when there were those of us who tried to tell you starry-eyed barackies that the man was a total fraud?
let’s see..i believe we were dismissed as ‘racists’ at the time..so what does that make you now that the light is no longer shining in your eyes and you can see the man as he truly is?
You were right, and I think our hint was that he had spent so little time in office, and it’s easy to project your best hopes onto someone when you really have no evidence how they actually govern. It’s the same mistake the GOP might make with Palin (“she’s AWESOME! Because she hasn’t done anything, and I can project what I think she’ll do in the absence of evidence!”) It’s the new fad of the political clean slate that says the right things but is untested in the messy world of politics, and there is no way of knowing if they can withstand all of it.
Good catch, Jon, thanx!
Obama is continually using fear-mongering and extortion – it’s like he can’t make a speech without it. I think Democrats have been kinda blinded, but are now seeing the light as this fear-mongering extortion from his last speech wasn’t the first time he’s done it by a long shot.
From the NY Times today:
